RESUMO

Fifteen Swiss albino male rats were used to study the effect of hyperthermia on the mucosa of the small intestine. Five rats were used as a control group. The other 10 rats were exposed to humid air at 43C for 2 hours/day. Five animals were sacrificed after 24 hours and the other five were sacrificed after one week. After 24 hours, the microvilli were low and conical in shape reflecting a primary effect on the cytoskeleton of the cells. One week post-hyperthermia, abnormal stacking of enterocytes, swollen mitochondria, dilated rER, thickening of the terminal web and damages in the endothelial cells of the blood capillaries were seen

RESUMO

Thirty human subjects ageing 60-72 years were investigated to study the structural changes which occur in the gastric mucosa with advancing age. Five healthy subjects of young age [27-30 years] were also included as a control group. Gastric biopsies were taken from all cases and multiple specimens were processed for a histological and histochemical study using the routine hematoxylin and eosin stain, succinic dehydrogenase and alkaline phosphatase enzymes. There was a significant difference in the histological and histochemical examination of the human gastric mucosa of the control and elderly subjects. A disturbed functional state of the gastric mucosa in senescent subjects seemed to be correlated with advancing age

RESUMO

The present study was carried out on 20 patients with chronic renal failure undergoing maintenance hemodialysis and six healthy non-hospitalized control individuals. The aim of this work was to study, the glycosylated hemoglobin in relation to serum immunoreactive insulin and plasma glucose levels in patients with chronic renal failure and the effect of one month regular hemodialysis on these value. Before hemodialysis glycosylated hemoglobin is elevated in uremic patients, but cannot be used as an indicator of carbohydrate metabolism because it declines to normal level with improvement of uremic state with hemodialysis. Also, fasting serum insulin level is high in uremic patients, but hemodialysis and improvement of azotemia reduced basal serum insulin level

RESUMO

This study was performed on 20 patients with chronic renal failure on regular dialysis [15 patients on regular hemodialysis and 5 patients on routine peritoneal dialysis] all patients were clinically euthyroid. The aim of this work was to study the changes in total serum T3 and T4 levels, either before or after the setting of regular dialysis in patients with chronic renal failure. The present study revealed that there is no alteration in both total serum T3 or T4 levels in patients with chronic renal failure on both modalities of dialysis either after single or repeated settings. The present study also revealed that there is no relationship between serum levels of blood urea, serum creatinine, creatinine clearance or serum cholesterol to the serum levels of thyroid hormones
