RESUMO

Objective: To evaluate contamination of mobile phones from healthcare workers with nosocomial pathogens

Study Design: Cross sectional study

Place and Duration of Study: Microbiology Section, Pathology Department, Allama Iqbal Medical College, Jinnah Hospital Lahore, from Jul 2016 to Feb 2017

Material and Methods: A total of 257 culture swabs were collected from the mobile phones of HCWs of Jinnah Hospital, Lahore, every samples was processed for bacterial culture following standard protocols. Organisms were identified by colonial morphology, gram staining, and with the help of API 20NE and API 20E

Results: Out of 257 mobile phones, 66 percent [n=169] were contaminated with any 01/>01 bacteria. Most prominent pathogen isolated was coagulase negative staphyloccoi [CoNS] followed by Staphylococcus aureus 34.8 percent and 24 percent respectively. Other microorganisms identified, were Acinetobacter species [12.6 percent] n=29, Bacillus species 10.4 percent [n=24], Enterococcus species 4.8 percent [n=11], Escherichia coli 3.5 percent [n=8], Micrococcus species 3.5 percent [n=8], Diphtheroids 2.5 percent [n=5] Klebsiella species 1.7 percent [n=4], Aspergillus species 1.7 percent [n=4] and Pseudomonas aeruginosa 1.0 percent [n=2.0]. Out of 55 Staphylococcus aureus, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus [MRSA] were 36.0 percent [n=20] and methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus [MSSA] were 64.0 percent [n=35]

Conclusion: In the hospital setting mobile phones should be regularly decontaminated. Moreover, utmost emphasis needs to be paid to hand washing practices among HCWs

RESUMO

Meckel's Diverticulum is the most common congenital anomaly to involve the gastrointestinal tract. The vast majority remains asymptomatic and hence undiagnosed. We report here the case of a 15 year old male who presented with paralytic ileus following gangrene in Meckel's Diverticulum. This along with his appendix was removed. Subsequent pathological examination confirmed the gangrene as well as revealing pinworm infestation of Meckel's Diverticulum. This infestation was seen in the appendix as well. This appears to be the first reported case of simultaneous involvement of Meckel's Diverticulum and appendix by pinworm. Careful histopathological examination would ensure that this common parasite is not missed

RESUMO

Chondroid syringoma [CS] is a benign neoplasm of the sweat glands that usually occurs in the head and neck region. We report here a case of a 72-year-old female patient with a benign chondroid syringoma, which occurred at an unusual location - the arm. The diagnosis was made on histopathology. Although the tumour size was large [6cm], the morphology revealed no features suggestive of malignancy. Hence CS should be considered in the differential diagnosis of cutaneous neoplasms, even when they occur at unusual sites. Also, a large size raises the suspicion of malignancy but definite diagnosis rests upon a careful histopathological examination

RESUMO

Histological analysis of 89 "benign" ovarian cysts received over a period of 2-1/2 years [January, 1991 to July, 1993] at the department of Pathology, Fatima Jinnah Medical College, Lahore showed that 44 were neoplastic, 22 dysfunctional, 19 simple and 4 endometriotic. Clinical presentation and gross features could not serve to differentiate these types. Routine histological examination had to be supplemented with ample blocking and deeper sections for a more specific typing. With this procedure the original diagnosis was altered in 11.2% cases, 7 cases originally labelled as "simple cysts", were categorized as dysfunctional [N=2], neoplastic [N=1] and endometriotic cysts [N=3]. Similarly in 3 cases the primary diagnosis of endometriotic cysts was altered in favour of dysfunctional [N=2] and neoplastic [N=1] cysts. The neoplastic and dysfunctional cysts have different clinical implications. It is proposed that the clinical diagnosis of benign ovarian cyst should be supported by a careful histological evaluation
