RESUMO
The radial nerve is a terminal branch of the brachial plexus that innervates the entire posterior compartment of the upper limb. Researches have shown that the branches can contribute to innervation of the muscles from the anterior compartment of the arm. This study sought to identify branches of radial nerve for brachialis and coracobrachialis muscles and its clinical value during surgery. Dissection was performed in 60 arms, from 30 corpses selected from the Human Anatomy Laboratories of Universidade Estadual de Ciências da Saúde de Alagoas (UNCISAL). In each arm, three segments of the same proportion were considered (proximal, middle and distal) in order to observe the number of radial nerve branches to brachialis and coracobrachialis muscles. Branches were identified in 4 of the 60 upper limb (6.66%) with the following distribution: nerve with 1 branch to the brachialis muscle in the distal third (1.66%); with 1 branch to the middle third of the coracobrachialis (1.66%) and 5 branches to the coracobrachialis muscle in the proximal third; 1 branch being found in an upper limb (1.66 %) and 4 branches in the other upper limb (1.66 %). The event was not bilaterally in the same body, and in four cases there was no branching, but only communication with other terminal nerves of the brachial plexus. In conclusion, although most authors do not describe the possibility of the occurrence of radial nerve branches to the muscles of the anterior compartment of the arm, this condition exists as an anatomical variation.

This paper describes the occurrence of cor triatriatum sinister, a rare cardiac malformation in dogs, associated with pulmonary edema and pulmonary hypertension in a 5-year-old Poodle female with history of acute dyspnea and cyanosis. The animal presented acute respiratory failure, heart failure with low cardiac output, progressing to acute tubular necrosis and death. The diagnosis was made posmortem due to the clinical instability of the dog. This malformation was diagnosed by the subdivision of the left atrium into two compartments separated by an abnormal fibromuscular membrane, absence of structural abnormalities of the mitral valve and thickening of pulmonary artery tunica media associated with renal tubular degeneration. The occurrence of cor triatriatum in dogs is most common in the right atrium, defined as cor triatriatum dexter. Additionally, pulmonary arterial hypertension associated with this malformation is described only in humans with this heart defect.

Osteoporosis and its consequent fractures are a great social and medical problem mainly occurring in post-menopausal women. Effective forms of prevention and treatment of osteoporosis associated with lower costs and the least side effects are needed. Electrical fields are able to stimulate osteogenesis in fractures, but little is known about their action on osteoporotic tissue. The aim of the present study was to determine by bone densitometry the effects of electrical stimulation on ovariectomized female Wistar rats. Thirty rats (220 ± 10 g) were divided into three groups: sham surgery (SHAM), bilateral ovariectomy (OVX) and bilateral ovariectomy + electrical stimulation (OVX + ES). The OVX + ES group was submitted to a 20-min session of a low-intensity pulsed electrical field (1.5 MHz, 30 mW/cm²) starting on the 7th day after surgery, five times a week (total = 55 sessions). Global, spine and limb bone mineral density were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA Hologic 4500A) before surgery and at the end of protocol (84 days after surgery). Electrical stimulation improved (P < 0.05) global (0.1522 ± 0.002), spine (0.1502 ± 0.003), and limb (0.1294 ± 0.003 g/cm²) bone mineral density compared to OVX group (0.1447 ± 0.001, 0.1393 ± 0.002, and 0.1212 ± 0.001, respectively). The OVX + ES group also showed significantly higher global bone mineral content (9.547 ± 0.114 g) when compared to both SHAM (8.693 ± 0.165 g) and OVX (8.522 ± 0.207 g) groups (P < 0.05). We have demonstrated that electrical fields stimulate osteogenesis in ovariectomized female rats. Their efficacy in osteoporosis remains to be demonstrated.

BACKGROUND: In patients receiving invasive mechanical ventilation through endotracheal tubes, the use of humidifiers is essential. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate temperature and relative humidity levels in the gas administered to patients undergoing mechanical ventilation by means of heated water humidifiers (HWH) and hygroscopic heat and moisture exchangers (HHME). METHOD: This was a prospective randomized study on 20 patients divided into two groups: one group using HWH (n=10) and the other using the Hygrobac "S" model of HHME, made by Mallinckrodt® (n=10). The variables analyzed were: temperature and relative humidity levels of the gas, minute volume (MV), tidal volume (V T) and condensation volume. RESULTS: It was found that HWH attained lower temperatures than did HHME (29.01 ± 1.33 ºC versus 30.14 ± 1.24 ºC; p<0.001). The relative humidity was higher in HWH than in HHME (97.45 ± 5.22 percent versus 89.87 ± 11.04 percent; p<0.021). The condensation volume in the ventilator circuit for the group using HWH was greater than for the HHME group (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: The results demonstrate that both systems (HWH and HHME) supplied absolute humidity that was below recommended values, while the HWH offered higher relative humidity. On the other hand, HHME produced better performance regarding gas heating.

Eggplant (Solanum melongena) is consumed extensively in Brazil. It has been believed that infusion of a powdered preparation of the fruit may reduce serum cholesterol. However, there are few documented reports on its effects on cholesterol metabolism and its possible hypocholesterolemic effect has not been proved by well-controlled studies. The aim of the present study was to observe the effects of S. melongena on the serum cholesterol and triglycerides of 38 hypercholesterolemic human volunteers ingesting S. melongena infusion for five weeks. Thirty-eight hypercholesterolemic subjects receiving either S. melongena infusion (N = 19) or placebo (N = 19) participated in two clinical experiments in which the effect of S. melongena infusion was studied with (N = 16) or without (N = 38) dietary orientation. Total cholesterol and its fractions, triglycerides, and apolipoproteins A and B were measured in blood at the beginning of the experiment and three and five weeks thereafter. No differences were observed compared to control. Intraindividual analysis showed that S. melongena infusion significantly reduced the blood levels of total and LDL cholesterol and of apolipoprotein B. After dietary orientation, no intra- or intergroup differences were seen for any of the parameters analyzed. The results suggest that S. melongena infusion had a modest and transitory effect, which was not different from that obtained with standard orientation for dyslipidemia patients (diet and physi
