RESUMO

The pluronics F-68, F-88, F-108 and F-127, and Plyvinylpyrrolidone K30 and K90 were tested for their ability to cause cell fusion. These polymers exhibited strong fusion of erythrocytes which took place almost instantaneously. Cell fusion occurred efficiently at polymers concentrations of 5%, decreased significantly at 2.5% and not induce fusion of ertyhrocytes hence suggesting what viscosity per se is not solely responsible for the observed cell fusion. The fusion process by pluronics and polyvinylpyrrolidones was not affected by rise in temperature from ambient to 37°C

RESUMO

The effect of clindamycin on the adherence of Staphylococcus aureus, replicating and non-replicating, to hydrocarbons and fibrin clots was studied. Staph. aureus adhered well in both model systems. Clindamycin inhibited adherence in both model systems when it was included in the assay media. Staph. aureus grown at 1/2 MIC of clindamycin also showed decreased adherence in both systems

RESUMO

Microbial degradation of oil remains the best candidate for rapid and efficient removal of accidental pollution of the environment. Several bacterial species were isolated from urbian soil, obtained from different geographical areas in the kingdom, which could grow on synthetic medium containing whole petroleum as a carbon source. All isolates grew on upto 4% of the oil and on three types of oils from different sources. Most isolates belonged to the actinomycetes including Coryneform group and streptomyces. Gas chromatographic analysis of growth-exhausted oils showed the ability of some strains to utilize many components of these oils, While others could utilize low molecular weight components only

RESUMO

The activities of artificial donor peroxidase, catalase, and superoxide dismutase in clinical isolates of T. vaginalis were studied. None of the tested strains exhibited activity of the three enzymes. Inclusion of catalase in Diamond -TYM solid medium did not support growth under aerobic conditions. The correlation between the absence of these enzymes and the growth conditions of the organism is discussed
