The effect of 4-hexylresorinol administration on NAD+ level and SIRT activity in Saos-2 cells / 대한악안면성형재건외과학회지

Background@#4-hexylresorcinol (4HR) has been shown to have anti-oxidant activity similar to that of resveratrol. As resveratrol increases sirtuin (SIRT) activity, 4HR might behave similarly to resveratrol.Method: In this study, the expression levels of SIRT1, SIRT3, and SIRT6 were evaluated after 4HR administration (1–100 μM). As NAD+ is a substrate for SIRTs, its levels with SIRT activity were also studied. @*Results@#In the results, SIRT3 (100 μM at 24 h) and SIRT6 (1–100 μM at 24 h and 10 μM at 8 h) were shown to have significantly higher expression levels compared to untreated control (p < 0.05). Pan-SIRT activity and the NAD+ level was significantly increased compared to that of the untreated control (p < 0.05; 10 and 100 μM at 24 h). @*Conclusion@#4HR administration increased SIRT activity and the NAD+ level in Saos-2 cells.

Evaluation of nasolabial angle in adult patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion / 대한치과교정학회지

OBJECTIVE: The purposes of this study were to evaluate the nasolabial angle changes between closed lip position at centric occlusion and relaxed lip position at which the bite is open so that the lips do not touch and to elucidate the significance of the relaxed lip position for dentofacial diagnosis. METHODS: The subjects consisted of 60 (35 Males, 25 Females) skeletal Class III malocclusion adult patients (mean age 23.3 years) with anterior crossbite. RESULTS: In Class III malocclusion adult patients, there were significant differences in the nasolabial angle changes between closed lip position and relaxed lip position. Using the cluster analysis, the subjects were divided into three groups according to the pattern of nasolabial angle change: Group 1 (N = 27, 45%, -8 ~ 1), Group 2 (N = 30, 50%, 2degrees ~ 17), and Group 3 (N = 3, 5%, over 18). CONCLUSION: The results showed that the pattern of the nasolabial angle change between closed lip position and relaxed lip position varies in skeletal Class III malocclusion patients. Thus, relaxed lip position should be taken into account when diagnostic records are obtained and analyzed to accurately to evaluate the facial soft tissues and predict facial esthetics after surgical-orthodontic treatment.

Treatment of radiation-induced cystitis with hyperbaric oxygen / 대한비뇨기과학회지

The effects of hyperbaric oxygen on radiation cystitis have been reported in patients with radiation-induced hemorrhagic cystitis refractory to conventional therapy. Cessation of gross hematuria and reversal of cystoscopic bladder changes were seen in response to a series of hyperbaric oxygen therapy of 3 atmosphere absolute pressure for 2 hours. We report the experience of 2 cases of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for radiation-induced cystitis.

Transureteroureterostomy: a neglected procedure / 대한비뇨기과학회지

We experienced a case of transureteroureterostomy in a single kidney with multiple distal ureteral strictures. The patient had received nephrectomy due to staghorn calculi 14 years ago. We have utilized the abandoned ureter from the transureteroureterostomy with stenting. We have confirmed good drainage through the anastomosed ureter by radiological imaging. No other complications were observed except Pseudomonas urinary tract infection. Thereby we report this unique procedure of transureteroureterostomy using the 14-year-age abandoned ureter.

M-VAC and MAC Combination Chemotherapy in Advanced Bladder Cancer / 대한비뇨기과학회지

Of the 11 advanced bladder cancer patients who received M-VAC (Methotrexate, Vinblastine, Doxorubicin and Cisplatin) combination chemotherapy, complete and partial remission were observed in 63.6%. Of the 17 advanced bladder cancer patients who received MAC (Methotrexate, Doxorubicin and Cisplatin) combination chemotherapy, complete and partial remissions were observed in 17%. Complete remission was achieved in 18.2% of the patients clinically, pathologically in M-VAC group and 5.9% in MAC group. Partial remission was occurred in 46.5% of the patients in M-VAC group and 41.2% in MAC group. All metastatic sites including the bone and liver, lung were well responded in M-VAC group, but poorly responded in MAC group. Toxicity was significant but tolerable.

A Study on the Evaluation of the Psychogenic Etiology by the Symptom Checklist-90-Revigion(SCL-90-R) and Treatment in Female Urethral Syndrome Patients / 대한비뇨기과학회지

From March 1983 to February 1988, 248 patients of female urethral syndrome were studied retrospectively. The results were as follows: 1. Both 113 cases of the patients group who showed female urethral syndrome and the same numbers of 113 as the control group who had been treated at this hospital with other medical diseases, were tested the Korean Manual of Symptom Checklist-90-Revision. In this way, female urethral syndrome patients scored up significantly higher on the anxiety, depression, and phobic anxietic symptoms than did the control group, and the results showed the evidence or psychosomatic etiologies on the female urethral syndrome (p<0.05 ). 2. Among the patients, the 135 patients were treated with transurethral fulguration, urethral dilatation and antibiotics. Tranquilizer and antidepressants were added to above mentioned treatment in another patients group, 113 patients. In this group, excellent result was obtained in cure rate. The cure rate was 83.2% (94 out of 113 cases) while only 57.8% (78 out of 135 cases) in group without tranquilizer and antidepressants in their treatment (p<0.06). 3. The tranquilizer and antidepressants did not influence on recurrence rate( p value ; not significant).

The Use of Enoxacin (B-Mark(TM)) in Urinary Tract Infections / 대한비뇨기과학회지

A new synthetic pyridone carboxylic antimicrobial agent, Enoxacin (B-Mark(TM)) was administered orally in 37 cases of genitourinary tract infection and following results were obtained. 1. Among 12 cases of acute simple cystitis, the cure rate was 91.7%. 2. Among 6 cases of chronic complicated urinary tract infections, the cure rate was 66.7 %. 3. Among 9 cases of gonorrheal urethritis, the cure rate was 88.9%. 4. Among 10 cases of nongonorrheal urethritis, the cure rate was 60%. There was no serious side effects but mild G-I symptoms such as nausea, indigestion and fatigability were found. The results suggest that Enoxacin (B-Mark(TM)) is a useful antibacterial agent in the treatment of urinary tract infections, especially in acute simple cystitis and gonorrheal urethritis.

Urinary Cytology in the Diagnosis of Urothelial Carcinoma / 대한비뇨기과학회지

The cytologic examination of the urine is very simple and inexpensive procedure for the detection and follow up the genitourinary tumors, and worthy as a mass screening test. The voided urines of 20 patients who were admitted to the department of urology, Seoul city hospital from October 1983 to September 1985 with the diagnosis of bladder carcinoma were analysed as to variations in PH and osmolality values and quality of cytologic smears. The same analyses were repeated after addition of trichloracetic acid (TCA) and after diuresis was obtained by Furosemide medication. Standardization of values of PH (average 2) and of osmolality (average 300 mosm/kg) was obtained by adding TCA to furosemide urine. The cellular smears of this TCA treated furosemide urine exhibited the finest cytological details when compared to the smears obtained by routine method.

The Use of Botropase in Suprapubic Transvesical Prostatectomy / 대한비뇨기과학회지

From April, 1980, to April, 1965, 24 male inpatients with suprapubic transvesical prostatectomy due to benign prostatic hypertrophy(B.P.H) were entered in the study. They were randomized into three groups. Intraoperative blood losses were evaluated by weighing the aspirated blood and the blood retained by the gauze tampones. New antihemorrhagic agent, Botropase(Bothrops Jararaca venom extract) was administered intramuscularly or intravenously in 8 cases of suprapubic transvesical prostatectomy due to B.P.H and following result were obtained. 1. Botropase(Bothrops Jararaca venom extract) was found to be useful to lead to reduction of local hemorrhage without any thrombophilic effect on the coagulation and fibrinolytic system. 2. Postoperative hematuria is significantly reduced by the administration of an antifibrinolytic agent. 3. In patients with a high thromboembolic risk, variation of the intra- and postoperativecoagulation and fibrinolytic activities should be carefully assessed; This is in under to prevent with the correct treatment thromboembolic accidents or disseminated intravascular coagulation syndromes. 4. No serious side effects were observed.

Clinical Observation on Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy / 대한비뇨기과학회지

A clinical study was made on 112 cases of benign prostatic hypertrophy, admitted to the Department of Urology, East City Hospital, Seoul, Korea during the period from January 1979 to December 1982.The results were summarized as follows.1. Benign prostatic hypertrophy were 112 cases of all 761 cases hospitalized, admission rate was 14.7%. 2. Majority of cases was found in 6th and 7th decades with mean age of 72,4 years old. 3. In composition of sexual life during 2th to 5th decades, long-term obstinence or irregular sexual life were 57 cases, long-term bachelohood were 38 cases, normal sexual life were 17 cases. 4. In most cases, the duration of the obstinence or the irregular sexual life was 11 years to 25 years. 5. The presenting symptoms were frequency in 94 cases, acute urinary retention in 59 cases and dysuria in 37 cases etc. 6. The blood chemistry showed elevated BUN in 83 cases and elevated creatinine in 61 cases. 7. The endoscopic examination was performed in 98 cases which revealed trabeculation in 87 cases, inflammation in 61 cases, kissing of lateral lobes in 46 cases and diverticular formation in 15 cases. 8. Hypertension in 12 cases and pulmonary tuberculosis in 12 cases were frequently associated with benign prostatic hypertrophy. 9. Methods of operative treatment were suprapubic prostatectomy in 24 cases, transurethral resection 21 cases and suprapubic cystostomy in 33 cases. 10.Postoperative complications were temporary incontinence in 33 cases, delayed bleeding in 8 cases, acute epididymitis in 3 cases and wound infection in 2 cases.

The Use of Eradacil(Rosoxacin) in Acute Gonococcal Urethritis / 대한비뇨기과학회지

From July 1982,30 male outpatients with acute gonococcal urethritis, bacteriologically confirmed to be positive for gonococci, were entered in this study. New bactericidal agent Eradacil was administered orally in a signal dose of 300mg in 30 case of acute gonococcal urethritis and following results were obtained. 1. All cases of acute gonococcal urethritis were cured. 2. In 4 cases, there was recurrence of urethral signs and symptoms 3 to 10 days after initial clearing following Eradacil therapy. These 4 case were retreated successfully with Doxycycline. 3. No serious side effects were observed except slight dizziness in one case.

A Study on Blood Group Specific Substance in the Urinary Stones / 대한비뇨기과학회지

Forty eight cases of urinary stone, which were collected from the patients, were admitted to the Department of Urology, Korea University Hospital during the period from Feb. 1971 to Aug. 1971. The experimental urinary stones were tested with serological absorption test and the following results were obtained. 1) In 43 of the 48 cases observed, blood group specific substances were detected, and were agreed with: blood group of observed patients. 2) In 5 of the 48 cases observed, blood group specific substances were not detected. cases were weighed below 0.03 gm. 3) The reaction titer of blood group specific substance in urolithiasis was become higher in proportion to the increase in size and weight of them. 4) There was no significant difference of reaction titer of blood group specific substance between the nucleus and cortex of the experimental urolithiasis. 5) Calcium oxalate stones were noted with highest reaction titer of blood group specific substance among the other chemical composition of the experimental urolithiasis. 6) Renal stones were noted with highest reaction titer of blood group specific substance, bladder stones the next and ureteral stones had the least titer in the experimental urolithiasis.

The Use of Cefazolin in Urinary Tract Infection / 대한비뇨기과학회지

New bactericidal agent, Cefazolin was administered intramuscularly or intravenously in 1-3 divided doses of 1-3 grams daily in 30 cases of genitourinary tract infection and following results were obtained. 1) Among 12 cases of pyelonephritis, excellent effect was obtained, in 8 cases 2 cases were good and no improvement was noted in 2 cases. 2) Among 6 cases of acute cystitis. excellent in 4 cases and good in 2 cases was noted. 3) Among 4 cases of benign prostatic hypertrophy, excellent result in 1 case, good it 1 case and to improvement in Z cases was noted. 4) Among 3 cases of chronic non-gonococcal urethritis, 2 cases were good and no improvement in l case was noted. 5) Among 2 cases of gonorrhea, no improvement in l case and recurrence in 1 case was noted. 6) No improvement noted in 2 cases of chronic prostatitis and 1 case of prostatic abscess. No serious side effects were observed except slight dizziness in one case.
