RESUMO

A case of gluten-induced enteropathy documented by jejunal mucosal biopsy and postmortem examination is reported in an 18-year old Filipino. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of nontropical sprue in the Philippines in a Filipino. The clinical and diagnostic features are discussed. (Summary)

RESUMO

1. A brief review of the literature of regional ileitis, together with some reports on the subject, is presented2. The first case report of regional ileitis in our country is given3. A theory that this disease is allied to lymphogranuloma inguinale is advanced by the senior author4. It is hoped that this report will stimulate our colleagues to consider this clinical entity when dealing with tumors of the lower abdomen.(Conclusions)

RESUMO

Whether one should assist a failing heart by giving inotropic agents or administer vasopressor amines to elevate systemic blood pressure thus increasing coronary perfusion, or give alpha adrenergic blocking agents to increase perfusion to ischemic viscera and decrease the external work load on the heart, is still controversialWe feel that cardiogenic shock is primarily a pump failure and needs assistance; however, we feel that the method suggested by Gold a combination of the two schools of thought giving drugs with inotropic, alpha-beta action, and peripheral alpha adrenergic blocking agent to prevent excessive rise in peripheral pressure, as the most appealing. Admittedly, however, clinical data is insufficient to take a firm definite stand on any position. (Conclusions)

RESUMO

A comparative study of the incidence of CVA and myocardial infarction was done. CVA was found to be 10 times more common than myocardial infarction. Thrombosis was the most common type of CVA. The male sex is more frequently affected. These diseases are prevalent after the age of 40. Hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and obesity are predisposing factors in their production. The prognosis is more serious in cerebral hemorrhage than in thrombosis. Myocardial infarction has a mortality rate of 10-20% depending on the number of infarctsAtherosclerosis, the underlying pathology, is a widespread disorder of the whole world in general. However, coronary disease has a slightly lower incidence in the East. Some data are given regarding the incidence CVA and myocardial infarction in other countries. Therapy of predisposing factors may help in some way in the prevention of some of these conditions.(Summary)

RESUMO

Bearing in mind the usual catastrophic results of myocardial infarction, the authors, with the aid of the cases illustrated above, wish to reemphasize its possible occurrence in patients, particularly the aged, who may be subjected to surgery. It has been pointed out that coronary artery disease is now more frequent that as mans life span increases, so does his predisposition to suffer this disease. Therefore, in such patients under the stress of surgery and anesthesia this danger looms larger than ever. The authors have described the predisposing and precipitating factors, mainly arteriosclerosis, previous myocardial injury, valvular diseases, conduction disturbances, and hypotensive periods during the operative and post-operative periods. The symptomatology attendant to this complication is likewise presented. (Summary)
