Formulation and in-vitro evaluation of levonorgestrel as well as copper releasing iud [procopper iud]

The addition of levonorgestrel to copper T 380 IUD carried on procopper IUD aimed at the improvement of contraceptive efficacy and minimizing its side effects and complications. In-vitro study of procopper IUD was carried out by evaluation of the release characteristics of levonorgestrel as well as copper from procopper IUD. The interaction, if any, of levonorgestrel with copper and /or elastomer was studied. The study of the release profile of levonorgestrel indicated that it was best fitted to zero order kinetic. It revealed that there is neither an interaction nor degradation for either levonorgestrel or copper during preparation or release

Clinical studies of [procopper iud] and in-vivo evaluation of levonorgestrel and copper levels in different biological fluids

The clinical studies of procopper IUDs revealed that they decreased the menstrual flow, but not to the extent of amenorrhea, no pregnancy was reported and they diminished pelvic inflammatory disease [PID]. The in vivo release study of both levonorgestrel as well as copper released from procopper IUDs in biological fluids indicated that neither levonorgestrel nor copper interfered with the release of each other, indicating that there is no interaction between them
