RESUMO

We determined the prevalence of antibodies to Epstein-Barr virus [EBV] in 44 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus [SLE] and 44 healthy blood donors matched for sex and age as controls. Of the cases, 39 were women; mean age was 33 years. Four cases [9%] and 5 controls [11%] were positive for IgM anti-viral capsid antigen [VCA] [P = 0.9]. All the cases were positive for IgG anti-VCA compared with 91% of the controls [P = 0.12]. The mean immunity ratio for this antibody was 2.341 in cases and 1.873 in controls [P = 0.068]. Forty [91%] cases were positive for IgG anti-EBNA1 [EB nuclear antigen1] compared with 42 [95%] controls [P = 0.6]

RESUMO

A survey was conducted in the Casablanca Regional Blood Transfusion Centre from to May 2002. A questionnaire was given to 1750 blood donors from different groups of society February to assess the knowledge of the public about hepatitis B and C and human immunodeficiency viruses. The responses indicated that the mechanism of HIV transmission was well known to the public: 85% gave correct answers. Hepatitis B and hepatitis C viruses were less well understood: 60% and 54% gave correct answers respectively. Our study suggests that the public needs to be better informed about hepatitis B and C virus transmission

RESUMO

Viral contamination with blood products is a major problem in patients with hemophilia. The aim of this study is to look for viral infection ie hepatitis and immunodeficiency syndrome virus in patients with hemophilia in our institution. Hence, 40 patients have been studied. Viral hepatitis is found in 43% of cases, witch is in accordance with the results found by the majority of authors. On the other hand, since our patients have seldom been treated with factor VIII concentrate, no impaired immunodeficiency syndrome have been found

RESUMO

The high prevalence of LAV/HTLV[m] virus etiological agent of A.I.D.S. and its transmission by blood and blood products have incit us to study the prevalence of HTLV[m] antibodies in 1.000 Moroccan blood donors. One case was positive in HTLV[m] antibodies. This weakness prevalence has to be confirmed by a large study in different regions in the Kingdom

RESUMO

The prevalence of hepatitis B and A markers were studied among blood donors in Casablanca. 7.6% of the tested individuals have HBs Ag. Among them 57.1% are highly infectious because they have HBe Ag. 34.78% of sera contain HBs Ab and 16.85% contain HBc Ab alone, 59.24% of the blood donors have at least one marker associated to hepatitis B virus. This prove the high degree of infectiosity by hepatitis B virus in Marocco. 24.46% of blood donnors have HBc Ab associated or not with HBs Ag and so they are potentially infectious. This study explain the importance of obligatory systematic research of HBs Ag and/or HBc Ab in all blood products which will be transfused in Morocco. 93.80% of the sera contain HVA-Ab, this explain the high epidemiological character of this infection

RESUMO

Because of the danger of post-splenectomy infection and the limitations of prophylaxis, and since it is possible to reduce the splenic function while preserving the spleen, the treatment of various hematologic disorders by splenic artery ligation has been attempted in 11 children, among whom 3 under 5 years of age. 3 patients had thalassemia, 4 had hereditary spherocytosis and 4 others suffered from secondary hypersplenism. One patient died of overlooked splenic necrosis. The other patients are well, with an average follow-up of 19 months. The aim of this study is to find out whether the dearterialization produces the expected results and is well tolerated and whether the dearterialized spleen still preserves its ability to protect the host against infection. The satisfactory treatment of hereditary spherocytosis and secondary hypersplenism would indicate that splenic artery ligation offers an alternative to splenectomy, especially in children under 5 years

RESUMO

Two hundred and two children ranging from 1 to 3 years of age living in south Casablanca had determinations of hemoglobin, hematocrit, plasma iron, total iron binding capacity. The incidence of socioeconomic status are studied. 17% of the children had hemoglobin levels below or equal 10 gm/100 ml and 59% had iron deficiency. In the low family incomes, 50%of the children had hemoglobin levels equal or below 10 mg/100 ml and 76% had iron deficiency. This high incidence of iron deficiency and anemia, makes the study of their extent necessary in order to prevent such a deficiency by the mean of food supplementation

RESUMO

In Averroes Hospital, ten cases of acquired aplastic anaemia have been diagnosed in patients coming from Casablanca. This frequency sets an etiologic problem and a toxic cause is looked upon, especially the chloramphenicol which is greatly used in Morocco. The dark Prognosis of the disease imposes a great care when using this product
