RESUMO

The efficacy of fluconazole as 50 mg capsule taken once daily for 10 days was evaluated in 40 cancer patients diagnosed as having oropharyngeal candidosis. Swabs from the oral lesions were obtained for microscopic examination and culture, in addition, Candida albican identification in the whole unstimulated saliva was obtained from each patient before beginning of therapy and after 5 and 10 days. Fluconazole provided effective control of 37 cases [92.5%] at the end of therapy. Although, microscopic and culture results remained positive in 3 out of 40 cases, the viable Candida count showed a great decrease with noticeable improvement of the clinical features. The generally well tolerated, the excellent patients compliance, the lesser toxicity and the impressive antifugal efficacy suggests the use of fluconazole in treatment of oropharyngeal candidiais in cancer patients

RESUMO

The present study investigated by cytophotometric analysis the teratogenic effect of adriamycin on oral tissues of albino rats. The offsprings of adriamycin injected female rats were divided into two groups, each comprising 10 rats sacrificed at one month and 3 months of age. The tongue of each sacrificed animals was dissected and prepared for cytophotometric measurements. The results of the present investigation revealed a significant difference in the nuclear DNA distribution pattern in the experimental and the control populations in the first and third month specimens denoting a change in DNA metabolism in rats born to adriamycin-injected mothers. It could be concluded that, adriamycin administration could alter the pattern of DNA cells and metabolism in the oral mucosal cells. The basic DNA deviation could be a latent effect, or might affect the genetic composition of the offsprings which would pass to the following generations. The potential risk of teratoaenesis is great, especially if early trimester treatments are necessary
