RESUMO

OBJECTIVES@#To assess the treatment outcome of patients who completed their orthodontic treatment by using Andrews' six elements and the American Board of Orthodontic (ABO) objective grading system (OGS); to determine whether Andrews' six elements can be used as a new assessment system for patients who completed their orthodontic treatment.@*METHODS@#A total of 160 patients who completed their orthodontic treatment were included in the study. The participants were randomly selected from patients who completed their orthodontic procedures in Kunming Medical University Affiliated Stomatological Hospital during the period of 2015 to 2019. The retrospective completed cases were examined in accordance with the Andrews' six elements and ABO measuring scales. Scores were assigned to each tooth in each category. All the measurement items in both evaluation criteria, the composite category score, and the total score were calculated. The passing and potential passing rates of the completed cases were compared with two measuring scales via the Chi-square test.@*RESULTS@#The passing rate for the evaluation of cases by using the Andrews' six elements measuring scale was 83.8%, and that for the evaluation of cases by using the ABO measuring scale was 86.3%. The differences in achieving the standard between the cases of Andrews' six elements and ABO-OGS via the Chi-square test were statistically insignificant (@*CONCLUSIONS@#The performance of Andrews' six elements was comparable with that of ABO-OGS in assessing the treatment outcome of patients who completed their orthodontic treatment. Andrews' six elements can be used as a new system for assessing the treatment outcome of patients who completed their orthodontic treatment. It demonstrated particular advantage in controlling facial profile, and had just completed material of patients who completed their orthodontic treatment it can measure. The Andrews' six elements measuring scale is convenient to disseminate and use.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVETo investigate the effect of histone deacetylase inhibitor suberic bishydroxamate (SBHA) on human acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cell lines.

METHODSAML U937, KG-1 and Kasumi-1 cells were treated with SBHA. Cell growth was measured by MTT assay. Apoptosis was determined using flow cytometry. Activation of Caspase pathway and expression of apoptosis regulator proteins were detected by Western blot.

RESULTSSBHA significantly induced growth arrest and apoptosis in U937, KG-1 and Kasumi-1 cells. Enhanced apoptosis was observed in SHBA group evidenced by strong activation of Caspase-9, Caspase-8 and Caspase-3. SHBA treatment resulted in down-regulation of anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2 and Bcl-xl expression; down-regulated expression of antiapoptotic proteins survivin, XIAP and cIAP was also detected after SBHA treatment.

CONCLUSIONSBHA can effectively kill AML cells by inhibiting cell growth and inducing apoptosis, which is associated with the activation of Caspase pathway and regulation of apoptotic related proteins.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVETo study the under-five mortality rate and the causes of death in Zhejiang Province between 2000 and 2009 in order to provide a basis for reducing the mortality rate in the region.

METHODSBy stratified random cluster sampling, all the children under 5 years old from 30 sampling areas of Zhejiang Province between 2000 and 2009 were enrolled. The under-five mortality rate and the leading causes of death were investigated by descriptive analysis and Chi-square test.

RESULTSThe under-five mortality rate demonstrated a decreased trend in Zhejiang Province between 2000 and 2009, with the under-five mortality rate of 14.83‰ in 2000 compared to 9.49‰ in 2009. In 2009, the under-five mortality rate in rural regions was significantly higher than that in urban regions (9.14‰ vs 6.50‰; P<0.01). Compared with the resident population, there were an increased under-five mortality rate in floating population (12.12‰ vs 6.42‰; P<0.01). Preterm delivery/low birth weight was the top death cause in children under 5 years old. The top three causes of death in infants less than 1 year old were preterm delivery/low birth weight, congenital heart disease and birth asphyxia compared to drowning, traffic accident and falling in children aged 1-4 years.

CONCLUSIONSThere are differences in the under-five mortality rate between rural and urban children as well as between the floating and resident population in 2009. The leading causes of death in different age groups are different. It is essential to reduce the mortality rate by preventing preterm delivery, low birth weight and congenital malformations to infants and preventing accidental injuries to children aged 1-4 years.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVETo compare the therapeutic effects between acupuncture based on syndrome differentiation and analgesic on abdominal postoperative pain.

METHODSOne hundred cases of abdominal postoperative pain were randomly divided into two groups, 50 cases in each one. In acupuncture group, the treatment was applied according to meridian differentiation and point selection on the affected meridian. Ashi points near to the incision as the main points and those closely connected with Zangfu functions were selected, such as Yanglingquan (GB 34), Taichong (LR 3) and Zusanli (ST 36), etc. In medication group, muscular injection of Bucinnazine was administered. The severity of pain was evaluated with Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) before and after treatment.

RESULTSThe remarkably effective rate in acupuncture group was 60.0% (30/50), which was markedly better than that 28.0% (14/50) in medication group (P < 0.01). VAS scores in 30 min and 4 h after treatment as well as 24 h after operation in two groups were all reduced remarkably as compared with those before treatment (all P < 0.01), indicating the satisfactory analgesia in treatment. VAS scores in acupuncture group were lower apparently than those in medication group in 30 min and 4 h after treatment (P < 0.01,P < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONAcupuncture has quick analgesia in treatment of abdominal postoperative pain, which is superior to muscular injection of Bucinnazine because of its advantages of long-term and significant efficacy.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVEThe retrospective study was carried out to investigate the nation-wide neonatal screening program in the past 22 years in China. This study aimed to summarize the experience, analyze the questions and concerns in the screening program.

METHODSAll data on the national neonatal screening in the past 22 years were from National Center for Clinical Laboratory. Study items included the development and mode of the program, screening method adopted as well as the clinical records of prevalence, treatment and follow-up etc.

RESULTSNeonatal screening has become universal since 1985 in China. There were three modes of screening and treatment. From 1985 to 2006, a total of 13,229,242 newborns were screened for congenital hypothyroidism (CH) and 6505 were diagnosed as CH at a prevalence of 49.2/100,000; a total of 13,666,750 newborns were screened for phenylketonuria (PKU), and 1,170 were diagnosed as PKU at a prevalence of 8.6/100,000. The prevalence of CH increased year by year and the western regions in China had a much higher prevalence. The prevalence of PKU was relatively more steady than that of CH in China.

CONCLUSIONSNeonatal screening is of paramount importance in preventing mental retardation and developmental delay after CH and PKU. It is necessary to attach more importance to increase the rate of coverage, screening and treatment, as well as social awareness of neonatal screening. It is important to focus on establishment of new screening techniques so as to improve the level of child health care in China.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVETo study the best observation time for drug administration and withdrawal in the treatment of children with transient congenital hypothyroidism, seeking an objective basis for the safe drug withdrawal.

METHODSLevothyroxine was prescribed for 1 144 children diagnosed with congenital hypothyroidism (CH) and according to the results levothyroxine was adjusted to a maintenance dosage. Examinations were performed periodically including physical and mental development, thyroid ultrasonography, and blood levels of T3, T4, TSH. For the patients with a small maintenance dosage of levothyroxine (15.0 - 16.6 g/d) and all the examinations normal, levothyroxine was withdrawn at 2 - 3 years, and the children were followed up and reexamined after 1 month, 2 months, and 10 months, respectively. Permanent drug withdrawal was determined for children with all the examinations normal. Once abnormal TSH occurred, levothyroxine was prescribed again, and followed up continuously.

RESULTLevothyroxine was withdrawn from 157 children. During the follow up, for 15 children (9.55%) levothyroxine were prescribed continuously, and for 142 children permanent drug withdrawal (confirmed with transient CH) was determined. Abnormal TSH of various degrees was detected in 48 cases: 25.48 % (40/157),4.46 % (7/157), and 0.64 % (1/157) were detected at 1, 2 and 10 months after drug withdrawal, respectively. In 15 children levothyroxine was prescribed again for the remarkably high TSH, and the other 33 with mildly abnormal TSH finished the treatment since TSH normalized during follow-up.

CONCLUSIONAfter 2 - 3 years of regular treatment, levothyroxine can be withdrawn from children with normal T3, T4, TSH, physical and mental development, and thyroid function. The best observation time for drug withdrawal should be 2 - 3 months. If T3, T4 and TSH levels are in the normal range, drug can be withdrawn safely. Once abnormal results were detected during follow-up, levothyroxine should be administrated continuously.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVEThe aim of the study was to investigate apolipoprotein(apo) E polymorphism and its relationship with serum lipids and apolipoprotein, serum high density lipoprotein(HDL) subclasses in patients with type IV hyperlipidemia.

METHODSapoE genotype was assayed by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). The subclasses of serum HDL in 103 patients with type IV hyperlipidemia and 146 normolipidemic subjects were determined by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis in conjunction with immunodetection method.

RESULTSThe apoE3/3 genotype frequency and allele epsilon 3 frequency were both the highest in the frequency distribution profiles of the type IV hyperlipidemia group and the control group. In type IV hyperlipidemia group, the genotype of apoE2 had higher serum HDL-C,apoE, HDL(2a) apoE/apoCIII ratio but lower TG/HDL-C,apoCIII, HDL(3c) levels when compared with the genotype of apoE(3) (P<0.05). In control group, the genotype of apoE(2) had higher serum TG, apoE levels and apoE/aopCIII ratio but lower HDL (3a) level when compared with the genotype of apoE(3) (P<0.05).

CONCLUSIONAn association of allele epsilon 2 of apoE gene with the maturation of HDL in type IV hyperlipidemia was noted in the study.

RESUMO

Objective To evaluate the efficacy and safety of isotretinoin and viaminate for the treatment of moderate to severe acne vulgaris. Methods A multiple-centre,double-blind,double-analog comparative clinical trial was conducted.Patients diagnosed with moderate to severe acne by GAGS (global acne grading system) were randomly divided into isotretinoin group (10 mg,bid) and viaminate group (50 mg,tid);treatment was done for a total of 6 weeks. All subjects were evaluated before treatment, and at 2,4,6 weeks after the initiation of treatment, for evaluation of lesion count, and for observation of thera- peutic effects and side effects. Results A total of 217 patients were enrolled this trial,of which,213 could be evaluated in a FAS (Full Analysis Set) analysis and 200 in a PPS (per protocol) analysis. There was no significant difference in the efficacy at 2,4,6 weeks after the initiation of treatment between the isotretinoin group and viaminate group (6.0% vs 5.0%,29.0% vs 20.0%,57.0 % vs 51.0 %,respectively). However, the inflammatory papules and pustules decreased more rapidly in the isotretinoin group than in the viaminate group at each of the follow up evaluations (all P<0.05).There was no obvious difference in the rate of clearance of comedones and nodules between the two groups. Both the occurrence rate (68.81% vs 36.53%,P<0.001) and severity (P<0.05) of side effects were higher in the isotretinoin group than in the viaminate group. The main adverse events included mouth dryness, dizziness, etc, occurred more fre- quently in the isotretinoin group than in the viaminate group. Conclusion For the treatment of moderate to severe acne, the efficacy of isotretinoin is similar to that of viaminate;however, isotretinoin has more imme- diate effect with more side effects than viaminate.
