RESUMO

Rhinophyma is a disfiguring disease of the nasal skin, primarily affecting white men in the 5[th] to 7[th] decades of life. It is the end stage of acne rosacea where there is hypertrophy of the sebaceous elements of the skin resulting in a cosmetic nasal deformity. Modalities of treatment include dermabrasion, scalpel shave, cryosurgery, electrocautery, near total excision with skin grafting and laser excision. Seven male adult patients, above fifty, having rhinophyma were treated in the medical laser centre [NILES, Cairo University]. The CO[2] laser attached to operating microscope, or to a hand-piece was used safely and successfully in the treatment of rhinophyma under local anaesthesia. The results were comparable with others from literature, showing excellent safe removal of rhinophyma tissue by using CO[2] laser with minimal scarring and morbidity

RESUMO

Twenty-three cases of pyogenic granulomas [PG] were treated in the National Institute of Laser Enhanced Sciences [NILES], Cairo University in the period between 2000-2004. Different types of lasers were used to treat such lesions, which were located either on the skin or the mucosa of head and neck. Eleven patients were males and twelve patients were females. Four of them were pregnant. The age ranged between 12 and 71 years with an average of 38.3 years. All cases were cured after a single laser session, except three cases needed multiple laser sessions. Laser treatment, under local anesthesia as an office-based procedure, proved to be an effective method to remove different pyogenic granulomas affecting skin and mucosa of head and neck without any considerable complications and with minimal postoperative pain

RESUMO

In this work, a comparison was made between the endoscopic endonasal surgical dacryocystorhinostomy [EES-DCR] and the endoscopic endonasal office-based laser-assisted dacryocystorhinostomy [EEOL-DCR]. A number of modifications were applied in the laser-assisted technique to improve its lower success rate reported in the literature. The results concerning EEOL-DCR were satisfactory and comparable to some extent to the EES-DCR results. It was concluded that the EEOL-DCR is a safe, effective and rapid procedure that could be done under local anesthesia as an office-based technique. It was indicated for selected cases as in patients with bleeding disorders and anticoagulated patients as well as in patients in whom general anesthesia is difficult or contraindicated or in revision cases after external DCR

RESUMO

Twelve selected patients with submandibular duct stones were operated upon under local an aesthesia using CO [2] laser to incise the duct cleanly and precisely. All the stones were extracted successfully without reporting any considerable bleeding or major complications. The technique and advantage of using CO [2] laser are discussed in this article
