RESUMO

Objective:To investigate the method and effect of anatomic reduction of orbital septum fat in blepharoplasty to correct the first and second degree of upper eyelid depression. Methods:From January 2019 to January 2021, the data of patients with first and second degree upper eyelid depression admitted to Beijing Anzhen Hospital, Capital Medical University were retrospectively analyzed. Orbital septum was fully exposed and cut in blepharoplasty, the orbital fat of upper eyelid central group and the medial group were dissected and seperated to form the fat flap pedicled on the medial side. The fat flap was rotated 180° to the medial side and fixed with the orbital fat of the medial group to correct the upper eyelid depression. Complications such as infection, hematoma, fat liquefaction, nodules and orthers were observed after surgery. Questionnaire was used to investigate the satisfaction of patients, with 1-4 points indicating dissatisfaction, general satisfaction, satisfaction and very satisfaction, respectively. Results:A total of 62 patients were included, all patients were female, aged 18-44 years, wit mean 27 years. All patients were bilateral upper eyelid depression. After 6 months of follow-up, the curvature of the double eyelid line was smooth, the width and narrowness of double eyelid were natural, and the upper eyelid depression was significantly improved. Satisfaction survey showed that 60 cases were very satisfied and 2 cases were satisfied. Wound infection was occurred in 1 case, and was cured after dressing change. Scar hyperplasia was observed in 2 cases, which was obviously alleviated after external treatment with anti-scar hyperplasia drugs. No fat liquefaction, nodule and other complications occured. Conclusions:For the first and second degree of upper eyelid depression, it can be corrected by anatomic reduction of orbital septal fat in blepharoplasty. The operation is simple, with fewer complication and high satisfaction.

RESUMO

Urinary incontinence (UI) among older people is a common problem. Several treatments are available for older people with UI including surgery, drug therapies, and behavioral interventions. Recently, much attention has been placed on the behavioral treatments for UI, including pelvic floor muscle (PFM) exercise, weight loss exercise, and thermal therapy, as they have few risks, no side effects, and are effective. These therapies are often recommended as first line treatments for older people with UI. PFM exercise programs often incorporate alternations of fast contractions that are usually held for about two to three seconds interspersed with relaxation intervals of four to five seconds, and sustained contractions, where participants hold the contraction for about eight to ten seconds followed by a relaxation interval of ten to twelve seconds between the contractions. While exercise periods vary between 3 to 24 weeks, 8 to 12 weeks seems to be the most effective length for PFM exercise. The effectiveness of PFM exercise for the improvement of UI has been validated by many studies, with improvement rates ranging widely from 17 to 84%. Also, research has shown that UI is associated with obesity. Increases in body weight cause increases in abdominal wall weight, which in turn increases intra-abdominal pressure and intra-vesicular pressure. Therefore, abdominal fat reduction from exercise may decrease intra-abdominal pressure, perhaps causing improvements in urethral sphincter contraction and, hence, decreasing UI risk. Evidence reveals that PFM exercise and fitness training targeted at reducing modifiable risk factors are effective strategies for treating UI in older people, regardless of UI type.

RESUMO

Background & objectives: Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) reduces fat deposition in the body, but the mechanism of action is not clear. The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of CLA on body fat metabolism. Since milk fat is the best natural source of dietary CLA, intervention of non-fat milk constituents on CLA treatment was also investigated. Methods: Diets containing CLA (1%) with or without skim milk powder (SMP) was fed to male Swiss albino mice for 60 days. Adipose depots weight, faecal fat and the activities of selected enzymes of lipid metabolism were determined. Results: The mice on CLA and CLA+SMP diets gained weight similar to those on control diet, despite higher feed intake in the former two groups. Total fat pad mass was significantly (P<0.05) less in CLA group than in control group, and inclusion of SMP in the diet enhanced the fat reducing effect of CLA. Adiposity index was also less on CLA and CLA+SMP diets than on control diet, and CLA+SMP was more efficacious in reducing adiposity index. The weight of liver and spleen was increased by CLA, and this effect was eliminated by inclusion of SMP in the diet. The fatty acid synthase (FAS) activity in liver and retroperitoneal adipose tissue decreased substantially on CLA and CLA+SMP diets compared to that on control diet. Interpretation & conclusions: Our preliminary data show that dietary CLA reduces body fat mass by decreasing fatty acid biosynthesis, and the effect is enhanced by inclusion of SMP in the diet.

RESUMO

This study was performed to examine the diet effect of green coffee bean extract on body fat reduction. Overweight/obese women (body mass index > 23 kg/m2 or body fat > 27%) who were not diagnosed any type of disease were included in this study and subjects were randomly assigned to green coffee bean extract group (n = 23) or placebo group (n = 20). We measured anthropometric parameters, abdominal fat distribution by computed tomography and blood components before and after the 8-weeks intervention period. After supplementation, green coffee bean extract group showed a significant reduction of body weight (p < 0.01), body fat percent (p < 0.01), total fat area at L1 vertebra (-4.8%, p < 0.05) and visceral fat area at L4 vertebra was(-4.7%, p < 0.05). In addition, total fat area and visceral fat area at L1 vertebra decreased significantly in green coffee bean extract group compared with placebo group (p < 0.05, p < 0.05 respectively). The result of present study demonstrated that the supplementation of green coffee bean extract for 8 weeks can give beneficial effects on body fat reduction and visceral fat accumulation.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of walking 10,000 steps/day on the body composition, blood pressure, blood biochemical parameters and physical fitness. Sixty-one women, aged 56.0±5.3 yrs (mean±SD), participated in a hyperlipemia prevention program. The length of the program was 90-min and it was performed one time per week for 3 months. The program consisted of stretching and aerobic exercise (cycle exercise, walking or aerobic rhythmic gymnastics). The participants were asked to walk 10,000 steps/day or more during the program. The number of steps and physical activity (PA) were monitored using a single-axis accelerometer during the program. PA was categorized into three activity levels, namely light (L), moderate (M) and vigorous (V) PA. After 3 months in the program, the participants were divided into two groups according to the average number of steps taken daily during the program : one group (GA) walked more than 10,000 steps/day, while the other (GB) walked below 10,000 steps/day. The time spent in LPA, MPA and VPA in GA were significantly longer than in GB (LPA : 79.4±19.2 min VS 58.2±10.0 min, MPA : 38.5±9.6 min VS 21.6±6.1 min, VPA : 6.3±4.9 min VS 2.6±2.0 min, p<0.001). Decreases in the percent body fat (p<0.001), body fat mass (p<0.001), fasting glucose (p<0.001), hemoglobin A1c (p=0.026), and triglyceride (p=0.036) and an improved performance when balancing on one leg while standing with eyes closed (p=0.027) were found respectively after the program for GA. These findings indicated that GA affected the percent body fat (p=0.036), body fat mass (p=0.040) and fasting glucose (p=0.009). According to a stepwise multiple regression analysis, the time spent in MPA showed a significantly negative correlation with the change in the body fat mass (p=0.025), and the change in the body fat mass showed a significantly positive correlation with the change in the fasting glucose (p<0.001), hemoglobin A1c (p=0.002) and triglyceride (p<0.001). We thus concluded that walking 10,000 steps/day resulted in an increased amount of time spent in MPA, and thus leading to decrease in the amount of body fat. This decrease in body fat is also considered to contribute to improvement in the coronary risk factor profiles.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of aerobic training on body fat reduction. A total of 978 high school girls participated in this study (freshmen = 365 ; junior = 300 ; senior = 313). Within each grade, subjects who showed interest in physical exercise were selected and assigned into athletes group (20 for freshmen, 22 for junior, 29 for senior). The athletes group performed aerobic exercise for 100 minutes per day, 5 days a week with 70% of a subject's maximal heart rate. Each subject agreed to participate in this study when she was freshman. Thus, the length of exercise was dependent upon subject grade. That is, senior group was on the exercise program for two and half years, junior group for one and half years, and freshman group for six months. The results are as follows : 1. The mean value of % body fat for athletes group were 21.23 for freshman, 21.57 for junior, and 21.49 for senior. These values were a bit smaller when compared to those for non-athletes groups (26.32, 24.76, 23.65 for freshman, junior and senior, respectively). The comparison of % body fat between athletes and non-athletes group showed that the largest difference was showed in freshman group, followed by junior and senior groups. 2. For the athletes groups there was no significant difference in the mean value of % body fat between 3 grades. However, this was not the case for the non-athletes groups. There was a significant difference (p<001) among the 3 grades for the non-athletes groups, the freshman group being the largest, followed by junior and senior.
