RESUMO

Worldwide, the incidence rate of myopia is maintained in a high level. Especially, the morbidity is rising continuously among children and adolescents. The progression of myopia affects visual acuity, vision related quality of life and productivity. Moreover, high myopia and its related ocular complications also aggravate the family and social burden. Therefore, the mechanism of myopia, related complications and methods of myopia prevention and control need further exploration. International Myopia Institute(IMI)published the second-edition white papers in April 2021. These white papers included reflections on the implications for clinical practice, the impact of myopia, the risk factors of myopia, the relationship among accommodation and binocular vision with myopia, pathologic myopia, prevention of myopia and digest. Comparing to the first edition, more than thousands of articles and conference abstracts were considered in white papers II, highlighting the latest research and progress related to myopia prevention and control. This article briefly summarizes and interprets the contents of the above white papers, including overview of myopia, impact of myopia, risk factors in myopia, ocular changes in the progress of myopia, and myopia prevention and control, hoping to provide advice for the clinical and scientific research work relating to myopia prevention and control.

RESUMO

The present study investigated whether children would benefit from feedback (knowledge of results, KR) provided after relatively good as opposed to poor trials. The task required participants to throw beanbags at a circular target that was placed on the floor at a distance of 3 m. Twenty-eight elementary school children (mean age: 10.6 years) participated in this experiment. The practice phase consisted of 10 blocks of 6 trials. After each 6-trial block, one group (KR good) received KR on the 3 most accurate tosses, whereas another group (KR poor) was given KR on the 3 least accurate ones. Participants were not informed about the trials on which they were provided feedback. Immediately following the practice phase, participants completed the intrinsic motivation inventory. One day after the practice phase, a retention test consisting of 10 trials without KR was conducted. The results demonstrated that learning was enhanced by providing KR after good trials during practice. Furthermore, the questionnaire results revealed that learners' intrinsic motivation was increased by positive feedback. The present findings add to the accumulating evidence that the motivational effects of feedback have a direct impact on learning.

BACKGROUND: An essential prerequisite for successful procurement of sufficient peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) for engraftment is the optimal timing of collection. The Sysmex SE-9000 automated hematology analyzer provides the immature information (IMI) channel for the identification and counting PBSC. In this study, The optimal timing of PBSC collection was studied using IMI channel. METHODS: 193 peripheral blood stem cell collections were performed from 52 patients with hematologic disorders or solid tumors and 15 donors. Pre-harvest peripheral blood WBC, mononuclear cells (MNC) and IMI were tested and compared with CD34+ cell count and CFU-GM count of harvested products. RESULTS: Peripheral blood WBC and MNC count showed a weak correlation with CD34+ cell yield (r=0.38, P1x10(6)/kg with sensitivity of 88.7%. Positive and negative predictive values of IMI >465/microliter for CD34+ cell >1x10(6)/kg were 65.5% and 87.5%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The automated IMI might be used as a simple and efficient indicator of PBSC mobilization and applying variable cutoff values of IMI would be a useful tool to predict the optimal timing of PBSC collection.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: A key to successful peripheral blood stem cell transplantation is to harvest a sufficient amount of hematopoietic stem cells. A method of quickly detecting hematopoietic stem cells in peripheral blood with simple procedures using the SE-9000TM IMI channel (TOA Medical Electronics Co., Ltd., Kobe, Japan) was developed. In this study, usefulness of determining the optimal time for peripheral blood stem cell harvest using IMI channel was investigated. METHODS: Seventy nine peripheral blood stem cell collections were performed from thirteen patients with hematologic malignancy and nineteen patients with solid organ malignancy. In 13 cases, G-CSF was administrered following chemotherapy. In 19 cases only G-CSF was used to mobilize the peripheral blood stem cells. The counts of leukocytes, mononuclear cells, CD34 positive cells, and IMI in peripheral blood and leukapheresis products were determined. RESULTS: The CD34 positive cell count in harvested PBSC showed positive correlation with leukocyte cell, mononuclear cell, CD34 positive cell, and IMI in peripheral blood, with correlation coefficients of 0.48, 0.27, 0.63, 0.66, respectively. Positive correlation was presented between IMI and CD34 positive cell in peripheral blood and harvested PBSC, with a correlation coefficient, 0.83 and 0.74, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: As the SE-9000TM enables determination of the number of PBSC easily and rapidly, within approximately 85 seconds, whereas CD34 assays is expensive and needs skilled operator, the measurement of IMI positive cells is clinically useful for monitoring the peripheral blood stem cell mobilization.
