RESUMO

Introduction: Recent studies have related the climacteric period with changes in connective tissue elasticity that may be related to diastasis recti abdominis. Mat Pilates is a method of exercise without impact that currently has more practitioners, due to its satisfactory results. However, there are no studies that evaluate the effectiveness of mat Pilates for women with diastasis recti abdominis. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of the mat Pilates program in climacteric women with diastasis recti abdominis. Methods: This randomized single-blinded clinical trial evaluated climacteric women with diastasis recti abdominis. The participants were randomized into the experimental group, which participated in 3 weekly sessions of mat Pilates for 12 weeks for a total of 36 sessions, and the control group (without exercises). The inter-rectus distance was measured with a digital caliper. The G*Power Version 3.1.9.2. software was used for the sample calculation, and the SPSS 20.0 program was used for statistical analysis. Results: The study comprised 21 women, including 10 in the control group and 11 in the experimental group, with mean ages of 54.3 ± 7.1 and 55.3 ± 6.0 years and body mass index values of 28.8 ± 5.5 kg/m2 and 29.9 ± 4.48 kg/m2, respectively. In the experimental group, reductions were observed in all the measures related to diastasis recti abdominis (p<0.05) in the supraumbilical, umbilical, and infra-umbilical regions. Conclusion: The mat Pilates method is effective for reducing diastasis recti abdominis in the climacteric period.

RESUMO

Objective@#To explore the effects of community building environment and sports with fitness APP usage and their interactions on teachers exercise habits in the Yangtze River Delta Region, so as to provide a scientific basis for the development of a sports and health promotion intervention program for teachers.@*Methods@#A total of 2 530 in service teachers from four provinces and cities in the Yangtze River Delta region, namely, Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Anhui Province, were sampled in May-June 2023 by using convenient cluster random sampling method. Self designed questionnaire was used to collect the basic information of the surveyed teachers, Physical Activity Building Environment Evaluation Questionnaire and the Sports with Fitness APP Usage Questionnaire were used to measure the teachers subjective perception of the community building environment and the usage of sports with fitness APP, respectively. Physical Exercise Habituation Scale was used to assess the level of exercise habits. Logistic regression models were applied to analyze the effects of community building environment and sports with fitness APP usage on physical exercise, and the interaction effects were analyzed by using additive and multiplicative models.@*Results@#Among all the teachers surveyed, 658 of them reported good physical exercise habits (26.0%), and differences in the rate of physical activity habit formation by gender, age, years of teaching, as well as subject of teaching were statistically significant ( χ 2=42.94, 39.73, 35.47, 218.23 , P <0.05). Teachers with physical exercise habits had significantly higher community building environment scores and sports and fitness APP use than teachers without exercise habits ( t =12.17,16.54, P <0.05). Adjusting for the confounders of age, gender, years of teaching experience, and subjects taught, multifactorial unconditional Logistic regression analysis showed that the probability of teachers having good physical exercise habits increased by 22% for every 1-point increase in the community building environment score on average ( OR =1.22, 95% CI =1.11-1.40), and the probability of teachers having good physical exercise habits increased by 16% for every 1-point increase in the sports with fitness APP score on average ( OR = 1.16 , 95% CI =1.03-1.31) ( P <0.05). Interaction analyses showed that there was an additive interaction between the effects of community building environment and sports and fitness APP use on teachers physical exercise habits after adjustment, and the 95% CI for RERI , API and SI were 1.17 -1.65, 0.12-0.46 and 1.78-3.33 ( P <0.05), respectively, and there was no multiplicative interaction ( P >0.05).@*Conclusions@#The community building environment and the usage of sports & fitness APP show impacts in the formation of teachers physical exercise habits in the Yangtze River Delta region, and there is an interaction effect. Enhancing the construction of smart sports centers around the community can provide a high quality external environment for the physical exercise habits formation.

RESUMO

@#Magnetic fields are safe and used in noninvasive physical therapies. Numerous studies have confirmed that magnetic fields have good osteogenic effects and certain value for clinical application in accelerating orthodontic tooth movement, promoting bone-implant integration, promoting fracture healing and improving the effects of distraction osteogenesis. Magnetic fields are expected to become applied as effective auxiliary methods for treating oral diseases. To support the clinical application of magnetic fields, this article reviews the applications of magnetic fields in the oral cavity, the biological effects on bone cells and the molecular mechanisms through which magnetic fields regulate bone metabolism. The biological effects of magnetic fields on bone cells include promoting osteogenesis by osteoblasts and mesenchymal stem cells and inhibiting bone resorption by osteoclasts. At the molecular level, bone cells sense and respond to magnetic stimulation, and through various mechanisms, such as displacement currents, Lorentz forces, and free radical pair effects, stimuli are transformed into biologically recognizable electrical signals that activate complex downstream signaling pathways, such as the P2 purinergic receptor signaling pathway, adenosine receptor signaling pathway, transforming growth factor-β receptor signaling pathway, mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway, and Notch pathway. In addition, magnetic parameters, which are the factors affecting the osteogenic effects of magnetic fields, are discussed. However, the mechanisms of the osteogenic effects of magnetic fields are unclear, and further studies of these mechanisms could provide effective strategies for bone regeneration and periodontal tissue regeneration. In addition, considering the target of magnetic field therapies, combination with other drugs could lead to new strategies for the treatment of oral diseases.

Introduction: Resistance training (RT) is part of the physical fitness program of a large number of people. In these programs, periodic evaluations are carried out to plan and monitor the effects of training. Recently, in addition to the traditional physical evaluations, it has been recommended the inclusion of functional tests to evaluate the movement pattern of individuals. Objective: To assess the functional performance of women and men participating of RT. Methods: Fifty-seven participants (27 women, 26.2 ± 5.1 years old; and 30 men, 26.3 ± 5.8 years old), who are physically active and experienced in RT, were assessed through the use of Functional Movement Screen (FMS®). The total score was compared between the genders using the Mann-Whitney U test, and the distribution of the partial scores (scores of individual tests) and the proportion of asymmetric scores between groups was performed through the Chi-Square test (p < 0.05). Results: Women and men presented, respectively, a total score of 14.6 ± 1.5 and 15.3 ± 1.4 points, and there was no significant difference between genders. Considering the partial scores, men performed better in the trunk stability (p = 0.001) and deep squat (p = 0.024) tests, while women presented higher scores in the shoulder mobility test (p = 0.001). In the latter, besides presenting worse results, men were significantly more asymmetrical (p = 0.002). Conclusions: The results of this study suggest the necessity of a more detailed observation of the partial scores in order to plan personalized training programs that consider the participants' individual needs.

High-intensity functional training represents a new fitness paradigm, it is also a type of exercise that is growing worldwide in terms of practitioners and fitness centers that offer it, despite the documentation regarding how to perform this type of exercise is scarce, so different problems can arise in this area of physical activity, sports and health due to a lack of knowledge of how to carry out this type of high-intensity physical exercise. The study objective of this article is to make a critical reflection on the means and methods applied in high intensity functional training. After consulting the literature, the following classification is proposed for the means (calisthenics/gymnastics, cardiometabolic and lifting), while the methods obtained two classifications, one based on the modality (means) and the other on the organizational (structure of the session). In conclusion, this new proposal is more in line with the reality of high-intensity functional training from the bases of sports training.

Introduction: Pain is the most common symptom after the first activation of orthodontic appliance. The most widely used analgesic treatment is paracetamol; however, its use inhibits cyclooxygenase activity and prostaglandin synthesis, which can affect the mechanism of tooth movement and bone remodeling. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of low power laser for pain relief in patients with orthodontic treatment. Methods: A quasi-experimental study of therapeutic intervention was carried out, from January to December 2020, in 40 patients treated at the orthodontic clinic of Dr. Juan Bruno Zayas Alfonso Teaching General Hospital in Santiago de Cuba, in whom orthodontic force was applied for the first time. These were randomly distributed into 2 groups of 20 members each: the study group, treated with low-power laser, and the control group, that received conventional medication (paracetamol). For statistical validation of data, the percentage and the Student's t test for independent samples were used, with 95 % confidence interval. Results: After three therapeutic sessions, 90.0% of the study group reported not presenting pain or feeling it slightly, while only 10.0% of patients in control group were put in any of the two previous categories. There was a significant difference between both groups (p=0.00). Conclusions: Laser, as an alternative therapy, was shown to be more effective than paracetamol.

RESUMO

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of salmon calcitonin administration as a pharmacological anchoring agent in orthodontics and to determine the influence of locally applied calcitonin on serum calcium levels. The secondary aim was to observe the response of dental and periodontal tissues using light microscopy. Methods: Fourteen healthy male adult Wistar rats with an average weight of 250 g had their teeth moved, seven of which received a local injection of salmon calcitonin in the furcation region of the left upper first molar. Concurrently, the remaining seven were used as controls. In the control group, saline solution was injected in the bifurcation region of tooth 26 to subject these animals to the same stress level as those of the experimental group. After 14 days, a 6 mm diameter orthodontic elastic band was inserted between teeth 26 and 27 in all animals to induce the movement of these teeth. The rats were anaesthetised and exsanguinated on day 21. In both groups, tooth movement and serum calcium levels were measured. The jaws were dissected with straight scissors, and tissue blocks containing gingiva, bone and teeth were identified, fixed and demineralised. Then, the pieces were cut into semi?serial slices, stained with hematoxylin, eosin, and Mallory’s trichrome, and analysed under an Axiophot light microscope. Results: There was significantly less tooth movement in the experimental group ( ±X DP ; 0,150 mm ± 0,037) than in the control group (0,236 mm ± 0,044; P = 0,003), while there was no significant difference in serum calcium levels between the two groups (control ±X DP ; 9,53 mg/dl ± 1,53; experimental 10,81 mg/dl ± 1,47; P = 0,15). Conclusion: While calcitonin did not completely inhibit osteoclast activity, it promoted orthodontic anchorage, apparently, by local action.

INTRODUCTION: The evidence on the improvement of functional capacity using the Pilates Method is not conclusive. One possibility to improve the effect of a Pilates session on the cardiorespiratory capacity of its practitioners is to use the inspiratory flow resistance (IFR) concomitantly. This effect can be visualized by determining the glycemic threshold (GT), a technique used as an exercise intensity marker. OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that the use of IFR in a Pilates session anticipates GT. METHODS: Cross-sectional crossover study. A total of 26 individuals of both genders were evaluated, 10 of whom were male, healthy, and aged between 20 and 40 years. The volunteers were randomized to two protocols: Protocol IFR - Eleven movements of the Pilates method with IFR using 20% of the maximum inspiratory pressure, and Protocol no IFR (NIFR) - Eleven movements of the Pilates method without IFR. The two protocols were performed on the same day, one in the morning and the other in the afternoon, according to randomization by simple random draw. At rest and at the end of each movement, capillary blood collections were performed to measure blood glucose and construct the glycemic curve. GT was determined at the smallest point on the curve. RESULTS: The GT was anticipated in the protocol that used IFR; that is, in the protocol with IFR, the GT was visualized in the sixth exercise, while in the NIFR protocol, the GT was visualized in the ninth exercise (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: IFR anticipated GT, which suggests that IFR increases the intensity of a Pilates session. This suggests the hypothesis that IFR can provide additional medium and long-term benefits to Pilates method practitioners.

Abstract Objective Verify the effect of Pain Neuroscience Education combined with Pilates on catastrophizing in older people with chronic non-specific low back pain. Methods A randomized controlled clinical trial with 80 participants divided into two groups: Pilates combined with Pain Neuroscience Education Group - PEG, and Pilates Group - PG. The measurements were taken at baseline, post-intervention, and after 6 months (follow-up). The protocol included three individual 30-min PNE sessions (only for PEG) and, after that, 8 weeks of Pilates (twice a week, 50 min/session, for both groups). Results Comparisons of pre-post and follow-up differences in catastrophizing, kinesiophobia, disability, and pain intensity showed no evidence that PNE had any additional effects when compared with exercises alone. One likely advantage of the present PNE protocol was that the dropout rates for the PEG group were lower than for the PG group, showing that PNE has increased exercise adherence. Conclusion The clinical relevance of the study is that Pilates is a safe intervention for older people with non-specific chronic low back pain, and that PNE can increase adherence to exercise for this population. RESUMO

ABSTRACT Objective: To investigate the effects of orthodontic tooth movement on clinical attachment level (CAL) changes in treated periodontitis in adult patients with malocclusion. Material and Methods: Present study is based on PRISMA guidelines; all articles published in international databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, and Embase between 2012 to May 2022 are included. 95% confidence interval (CI) for mean difference with fixed effect modal and inverse-variance were calculated. Data analysis was performed using STATA.V16 software. Results: In the initial review, duplicate studies were eliminated, abstracts of 175 studies were reviewed, two authors reviewed the full text of 21 studies, and finally, eleven studies were selected. The mean of CAL gain was 2.29 mm (MD, 95% CI -2.47 mm, -2.12 mm; p=0.00) (I2=91.81%; p=0.00; high heterogeneity). The mean difference of PPD changes was -1.93 mm (MD, 95% CI -2.07 mm, -1.80 mm; p=0.00) (I2=98.52%; p=0.00; high heterogeneity). RESUMO

ABSTRACT Introduction: Bisphosphonates have an inhibitory impact on osteoclastic activity, reducing bone resorption. However, the influence of risedronate on tooth movement is not well-defined. Objective: This systematic review assessed the effect of risedronate intake on orthodontic tooth movement. A case report was also provided. Methods: Two independent reviewers searched six databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Ovid, Lilacs, Scopus, and Open Grey). The searches were carried out in April/2020, and an update was set in place in June/2023. Therefore, the searches considered a timeline from the databases' inception date until June/2023, with no publication date and/or language restrictions. The clinical question focused on evaluating the orthodontic tooth movement and relapse movement (Outcome) in animals (Population) exposed to risedronate (Exposure), compared to control groups (Comparison). The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines were applied, and the protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42020168581). The risk of bias was determined using the Systematic Review Centre for Laboratory Animal Experimentation protocol (SYRCLE). Results: Two studies in rats and one in guinea pigs were included in the systematic review. The studies reported a decrease in orthodontic tooth movement, a reduction in the relapse movement, and a reduced number of positive tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) cells, with a significantly reduced number of bone gaps after the administration of risedronate in rats. A case report illustrated the effects of risedronate administration in one patient. Conclusion: Based on the systematic review, risedronate seems to impair orthodontic tooth movement and relapse due to a decrease in bone resorption cells.

Abstract The aim of this study was to quantify the force exerted by tandem archwires in a specific system of passive self-ligating bracket. Forty-eight thermo-activated nickel-titanium orthodontic archwires were separated into four groups (n = 12): G1 - two .014" + .014" round archwires; G2 - two .014" + .016" round archwires; G3 - .014" x .025" rectangular archwire; and. G4 - .016" x .022" rectangular archwire. Brackets were fixed onto teeth 1.5 to 2.5 using a device that represented the upper teeth, maintaining an interbracket distance of 6.0 mm. The deflection tests were performed using the structure representative of tooth 1.1 as support on the Instron testing machine at a speed of 2.0 mm/min. The archwires were evaluated at deflections of 0.5 mm, 1.0 mm, and 1.5 mm. The data were analyzed by a generalized linear model, considering values at different deflections as repeated measurements in the same experimental unit (α = 0.5%). At 0.5 mm, higher forces were observed in G2 and G3, which did not differ significantly (p > 0.05). The lowest force was observed in G4 (p < 0.05). At 1.0 mm and 1.5 mm, the highest force was observed in G3, followed by G4 and G2 (p < 0.05). The lowest force was observed in G1 (p < 0.05). In general, tandem archwires (same or different calibers) in a specific passive self-ligating bracket exerted lower force when compared with rectangular archwires.

RESUMO

Chronic nonspecific low back pain (CNLBP) is the most common musculoskeletal condition, which can be influenced by nociceptive, psychosocial, cognitive, and affective aspects, causing vulnerabilities and impairing the individual's ability to manage pain. The association of continuous shortwave diathermy (CSWD) with Pilates-based exercises may contribute to reduce pain, depression, and anxiety in patients with CNLBP. A single-blind randomized clinical trial was performed in which 36 patients with CNLBP were divided into a control group that received placebo CSWD and an intervention group that received active CSWD. Both groups received 12 sessions of Pilates-based exercises. Pain, depression, and anxiety variables were evaluated using the McGill questionnaire, the Beck Depression Inventory, and the Visual Analog Anxiety Scale. Assessments were performed at baseline, after three and six weeks of treatment, and at the three-month follow-up. The Shapiro-Wilk test, Student's t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, chi-squared test, and repeated measures ANOVA, with α=0.05, were used to compare the outcomes, and indicated that active CSWD did not present additional improvement in the assessed variables in CNLBP patients compared to the placebo group. Both groups improved pain and depression at follow-up and reduced anxiety only during Pilates-based exercises. Therefore, only Pilates-based exercises seemed sufficient to manage patients with CNLBP.
