RESUMO

ObjectiveTo identify and analyze the possible influencing factors of obesity among public primary school students in Minhang District, Shanghai. MethodsBasic data, collected through questionnaire stars, was imported with merged physical examination data into Excel to form a database. Data were collected by questionnaire and analyzed by SPSS 22.00. Independent sample t-test was used for the data with normal distribution. Nonparametric test was used for the data with non-normal distribution. χ2 test was used for the quantitative data. Logistic regression was used for univariate and multivariate analysis. ResultsAccording to the national physical health standards for students (revised in 2014) , the prevalence rate of obesity among primary school students in Minhang district was 29.63% . The prevalence of overweight and obesity was 32.1% in boys and 26.9% in girls. The trend of overweight and obesity in different grades was similar among different genders .A single factor analysis showed that, being the only child (χ2=9.300, P<0.01) , father obesity(χ2=106.417, P<0.001) or mother obesity(χ2=118.534, P<0.001) , mother's overweight during pregnancy (χ2=159.731, P<0.001) , caregiver's role as grandparents (χ2=38.736, P<0.001) , low education level (χ2=111.309, P<0.001) had effects on overweight and obesity of children while the differences had statistical significance. Pupil's bad eating habit (χ2=18.905,P<0.001) and preference (χ2=22.901, P<0.001) , insufficient sleep time (χ2=61.685, P<0.001) , long-time using of electronic products (χ2=37.182, P<0.001) and low-time of exercise (χ2=15.328, P<0.001) also affected the obesity of primary school students. Among the five factors of family, diet, psychology, static state and dynamic state, the influencing factors of obesity in primary school students from grade one to grade four were being the only child, obese father and/or mother, overweight mother during pregnancy, caregivers without higher education. In terms of diet, it was mainly based on eating habits before bedtime, as well as partial and picky eating habits. In terms of psychology, the main psychological source was the pressure of learning in school. There was a clear relationship between the pace of learning and not keeping up. Static analysis revealed a correlation with lack of sleep. After assigning values based on eye hygiene recommendations for the use of electronic products, it was found that there was no direct correlation between obesity in primary school students and the duration of electronic product use. Dynamic analysis showed that not taking part in school physical exercise was related to obesity. ConclusionThe obesity of primary school students is influenced by family, diet, psychology, static and dynamic factors. The intervention of obesity in primary school needs the joint efforts of school, society, family, self-cognition and so on.

(analítico) A más de 30 años de la Convención de los Derechos del Niño y reconocido su derecho a participar, las investigaciones siguen siendo predominantemente sobre los niños/as y no con ellos/as. Este estudio busca avanzar hacia la incorporación de niños/as como productores de conocimientos en sus escuelas. Es un estudio cualitativo longitudinal donde 64 niños/as asumieron un rol de co-investigadores del compromiso escolar mediante talleres con una metodología de investigación-acción participativa, entrevistas y análisis que ellos/as realizaron. Se relevan distintas percepciones sobre los subtipos de compromiso escolar y factores contextuales asociados que enriquecen el análisis adulto y la importancia de complementar los datos cuantitativos en las escuelas con las voces de las infancias, en tanto agentes de cambio. Se concluye sobre cómo incluir su participación en investigación más significativamente.


(analytical) More than 30 years after the Convention on the Rights of the Child recognized their right to participate, research continues to be predominantly about children but not carried out with them. This study seeks to contribute to the incorporation of children as producers of knowledge in their schools. It is a longitudinal qualitative study in which 64 children assumed the role of co-researchers on the topic of school engagement. This was achieved through workshops that used a participatory action research methodology, interviews and analysis undertaken by the children themselves. The study identified different perceptions about the subtypes of school engagement and associated contextual factors that enrich adult analysis, as well as the importance of complementing quantitative data collected in schools with the voices of children, who in this process act as agents of change. The authors conclude the article with identifying how to achieve more meaningful child participation in research studies.


(analítico) Mais de 30 anos após a Convenção sobre os Direitos da Criança e o direito de participação reconhecido, a pesquisa continua sendo predominantemente sobre crianças e não com elas. Este estudo busca caminhar para a incorporação das crianças como produtoras de conhecimento em suas escolas. Trata-se de um estudo qualitativo longitudinal onde 64 crianças assumiram o papel de co-investigadoras do compromisso escolar através de oficinas com metodologia de pesquisaação participativa, entrevistas e análises que realizaram. Revelamse diferentes perceções sobre os subtipos de envolvimento escolar e fatores contextuais associados que enriquecem a análise dos adultos e a importância de complementar os dados quantitativos nas escolas com as vozes das crianças, enquanto agentes de mudança.

Lateral ankle sprain (LAS) is one of the most common sport-related injuries among basketball players. Most basketball players experience a first LAS particularly in junior high school. Thus, it is crucial to develop effective prevention strategies for LAS in junior high school populations. However, the characteristics for first-time LAS are not clear. This study aimed to compare the physical and functional characteristics of junior high school basketball players with and without a history of LAS. Two hundred and thirty-eight junior high school basketball players (128 boys and 110 girls) volunteered for this study. We asked participants to complete a self-reported injury history questionnaire. We also assessed physical functions, including range of motion, muscular strength, dynamic balance, and performance. The prevalence of LAS was 75.6% (boys: 73.4%, girls: 78.2%). Boys with a history of LAS had significantly higher height, body mass, and BMI compared to those without a history of LAS (p<0.05). Girls with a history of LAS had significantly lower scores on the star excursion balance test in the anterior reaching direction compared with the control group (p=0.015). Various measures of physical function were associated with LAS, but these associations were different between boys’ and girls’ basketball players. These findings from this study indicate that clinicians should identify sex-specific impairments associated with LAS when designing targeted intervention programs.

Abstract@#Objective To investigate the prevalence of dissociative tendency and its influencing factors among middle school students, so as to provide insights into prevention and early interventions of adolescent dissociative tendency.@* Methods@# Students at ages of 13 to 18 years that studied in 9 high schools were sampled using a multistage, stratified, cluster sampling method from 3 counties (districts) of Hangzhou City from January, 2021 and March, 2022. Participants' demographics and social, school, family environment and psychological factors were collected using self-designed questionnaires and standardized scales. The dissociative tendency was initially screened using the Adolescent Dissociative Experience Scale (A-DES), and the diagnosed by three psychiatrists according to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th Edition). Factors affecting ADT were identified using a multivariable logistic regression model. @*Results@# Totally 3 240 students were recruited, and 2 841 students were qualified, with a response rate of 87.69%. The respondents included 1 389 men (48.89%) and 1 452 women (51.11%), and had a mean age of (15.69±1.58) years. The prevalence of dissociative tendency was 24.04%, and the detection of dissociative tendency was higher among men than among women (29.23% vs. 19.08%; χ2=24.529, P<0.001). Multivariable logistic regression analysis identified negative teacher-student relationship (OR=1.055, 95%CI: 1.010-1.103), family emotional expressiveness (OR=0.872, 95%CI: 0.777-0.978), family conflict (OR=1.152, 95%CI: 1.045-1.271), family organization (OR=0.880, 95%CI: 0.780-0.992) and family cohesion (OR=0.871, 95%CI: 0.766-0.987) as factors affecting dissociative tendency among men, and somatization (OR=1.041, 95%CI: 1.002-1.082) and paranoid ideation (OR=1.094, 95%CI: 1.006-1.190) as factors affecting dissociative tendency among women. @*Conclusions@# The prevalence of dissociative tendency was 24.04% among middle school students. Negative teacher-student relationship, family emotional expressiveness, family conflict, family organization, and family cohesion may affect dissociative tendency among men, while somatization and paranoid ideation may affect dissociative tendency among women.

Objective@#To investigate of e-cigarette use among middle school students in Hainan Province, so as to provide insights into tobacco control among adolescents.@*Methods@#Students were randomly sampled using a multistage stratified cluster random sampling method from three junior high schools, two high schools and one vocational high school in Hainan Province from July to October, 2021. Participants' basic features, use of e-cigarettes, e-cigarette advertising exposure were collected using the Questionnaire on Tobacco and Alcohol Prevalence among Chinese Adolescents in 2021 prepared by Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Following data weighting, students' use of e-cigarettes and exposure to e-cigarette advertisements were descriptively analyzed, and factors affecting current use of e-cigarettes were identified using a multivariable logistic regression model.@*Results@#A total of 8 561 questionnaires were allocated, and 8 538 valid questionnaires were recovered, with an effective recovery rate of 99.73%. The respondents included 4 470 boys (52.35%) and 4 068 girls (47.65%), and there 4 367 junior high school students (51.15%), 3 482 high school students (40.78%), and 689 vocational high school students (8.07%). The rate of e-cigarette use was 25.01% and the rate of current e-cigarette use was 4.68%. There were 2 728 respondents with exposure to e-cigarette advertising during the past 30 days, and the number of weighted individuals were 210 932 (32.60%). The route of e-cigarette advertising exposure mainly included point-of-sale (21.59%), stores (13.61%), and shopping websites (9.01%). Multivariable logistic regression analysis identified region (OR=0.610, 95%CI: 0.482-0.772), males (OR=1.332, 95%CI: 1.062-1.669), high school students (OR=0.376, 95%CI: 0.259-0.545), companion smoking (OR=6.645, 95%CI: 4.935-8.948) and advertising exposure (OR=3.229, 95%CI: 2.581-4.040) as factors affecting current use of e-cigarettes. @*Conclusions@#The use of e-cigarettes among middle school students is higher in Hainan Province than the national level, and exposure to e-cigarette advertisements may facilitate use of e-cigarettes. It is necessary to strengthen the supervision of e-cigarettes, strictly restrict e-cigarettes advertisements and promotions.

Objective@# To investigate the e-cigarette use and its influencing factors among middle school students in Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province, so as to provide insights into e-cigarette control among adolescents.@*Methods@#Students of junior high schools, high schools and vocational high schools in Ningbo City were sampled using a multi-stage stratified cluster random sampling method from September to October 2021. Students' general information, cigarette and e-cigarette use and e-cigarette advertising exposure were collected using 2021 China Youth Tobacco Survey Questionnaire, and proportions of e-cigarette current use and attempt to use were analyzed. Factors affecting the attempt to use e-cigarettes were identified using a multivariable logistic regression model. @*Results@#Totally 1 591 questionnaires were allocated, and 1 574 valid questionnaires were recovered, with an effective rate of 98.93%. The respondents included 863 males (54.83%) and 711 females (45.17%); 787 junior high school students (50.00%), 535 high school students (33.99%) and 252 vocational high school students (16.01%). The proportion of current e-cigarette use was 1.91% and the proportion of attempt to use e-cigarettes was 6.61%. Multivariable logistic regression analysis identified males (OR=2.544, 95%CI: 1.438-4.501), living in rural areas (OR=2.084, 95%CI: 1.195-3.634), having close friends who were smokers (OR=4.828, 95%CI: 2.936-7.940), witnessing teachers smoking at school (OR=2.766, 95%CI: 1.642-4.659), e-cigarette advertising exposure (OR=2.155, 95%CI: 1.315-3.532), current cigarette use (OR=9.365, 95%CI: 2.610-33.603) and attempt to use cigarettes (OR=7.519, 95%CI: 4.115-13.737) as promoting factors for the attempt to use e-cigarette. @* Conclusions @#There are e-cigarette use behaviors among middle school students in Ningbo City. Having teachers or close friends who were smokers, cigarette use behaviors and e-cigarette advertising exposure may increase the risk of attempt to use e-cigarettes among middle school students.

Objective@#To investigate the prevalence of anemia and its influencing factors among primary school students from Kazakh ethnic groups in agricultural and pastoral areas of Altay Prefecture, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, so as to provide insights into improvements of nutrition and prevention of anemia among students.@*Methods@#Grade 1 to 3 Kazakh ethnic students were sampled using a cluster sampling method from 7 primary schools in agricultural and pastoral areas of Altay Prefecture, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region from April to June, 2022. Demographics and dietary behaviors were collected using questionnaire surveys, and the height and body weight were measured, while peripheral blood hemoglobin was detected. Factors affecting anemia were identified using a multivariable logistic regression model.@*Results@#A total of 2 378 questionnaires were allocated, and 2 214 valid questionnaires were recovered, with an effective rate of 93.10%. The respondents included 1 123 men (50.72%) and 1 091 women (49.28%), and had a mean age of (8.12±1.41) years. The prevalence of anemia was 22.49%, and the detection rates of mild and moderate anemia were 15.31% and 7.18%, with no severe anemia detected. Multivariable logistic regression analysis identified frequency of eating eggs (0, OR=2.532, 95%CI: 2.114-3.015; 1 to 3 times/week, OR=1.926, 95%CI: 1.648-2.216), frequency of eating meat (1 to 3 times/week, OR=1.468, 95%CI: 1.256-1.689; 4 to 7 times/week, OR=2.212, 95%CI: 1.823-2.641), frequency of healthy check-up (0, OR=2.872, 95%CI: 2.523-3.231; 1 time/year, OR=1.826, 95%CI: 1.546-2.108), monthly mean household income (1 500 Yuan and lower per month, OR=1.324, 95%CI: 1.071-1.582; 1 501 to 3 000 Yuan per month, OR=1.124, 95%CI: 1.029-1.221) and caregiver (grandparents, OR=1.175, 95%CI: 1.038-1.324; others, OR=1.241, 95%CI: 1.032-1.466) as factors affecting anemia.@*Conclusions@#The prevalence of anemia is 22.49% among primary school students from Kazakh ethnic groups in agricultural and pastoral areas of Altay Prefecture, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, with mild anemia as the predominant type. Dietary behaviors, frequency of healthy check-up, economic status and caregiver may affect the development of anemia.

RESUMO

This paper summarized the school nutrition lunch legislations and nutrition status in China and abroad. School lunch system is relatively well-established and mature in Japan, the United States and Sweden and the lunch system has been gradually as an important part of basic education, which is worth learning by other countries and regions. China started its pilot school nutrition lunch program in 1987, and has improved the nutritional status of students, especially the students in rural areas, significantly. However, there still exists certain gaps compared with developed countries. We should actively learn from those countries, so as to provide reference for the formulation and improvement of China’s nutritional lunch policies.

Objective To evaluate the effect of information-knowledge-attitude-practice (IKAP) theory-based health education interventions on clonorchiasis control among community residents and primary school students in Torch High-tech Development Zone of Zhongshan City, so as to provide insights into formulation of clonorchiasis control strategies among different types of populations. Methods Residents were randomly sampled from two communities and students from two primary schools using a random cluster sampling method in Torch High-tech Development Zone, Zhongshan City from 2019 to 2021, and health education pertaining to clonorchiasis control was performed based on the IKAP theory. The changes in the awareness of basic clonorchiasis control knowledge and belief, self-reported risk of Clonorchis sinensis infections and dietary behaviors were compared among community residents and primary school students before and after health education interventions. Results The participants included 146 male and 151 female community residents and 158 male and 153 female primary school students, with no significant difference detected in gender distribution (χ2 = 0.16, P > 0.05). The mean awareness of basic clonorchiasis control knowledge increased by 44.71% and 43.28% among primary school students and community residents 6 months following health education, and there were significant differences in the awareness of each item of basic clonorchiasis control knowledge before and after health education (χ2 = 41.53 to 284.44, all P values < 0.05). The proportions of primary school students and community residents thinking very high and high risks of C. sinensis infections increased from 9.35% and 6.71% before health education to 22.15% and 37.75% after health education, but only the difference of the attitudes in community residents achieve statistical significance (χ2 = 92.18, P < 0.05). The frequency of separation of raw and cooked foods with chopping board and knife significantly increased among community residents and primary school students following health education (χ2 = 16.04 to 62.65, all P values < 0.05). The frequency of eating raw freshwater fish (χ2 = 32.85, P < 0.05), fish congee (χ2 = 7.02, P < 0.05) and fish fillet hot pot (χ2 = 4.88, P < 0.05) significantly reduced among primary school students following health education, while only the frequency and proportions of eating raw freshwater fish have significantly reduced in community residents (χ2 = 11.77, P < 0.05). Conclusions Health education interventions based on the IKAP theory are effective to increase the awareness of clonorchiasis control knowledge and improve dietary behaviors associated with C. sinensis infections among community residents and primary school students in Zhongshan City.

ObjectiveTo analyze the association between alcohol dependence and overweight and obesity among high school students. MethodsThis study adopted stratified cluster sampling method. Four high schools (one vocational high school included) were selected as the research sites. We used self-designed questionnaires to investigate the drinking behavior of high school students. This study used propensity score matching method to control confounding factors (e.g gender, school type, etc.). Then we compared the differences in drinking behavior between obese/overweight group and normal weight group after matching, and used a multivariate logistic regression model to analyze the relationship between drinking behavior and overweight and obesity. ResultsA total of 811 high school students participated in the survey. 60 people were excluded due to mild and moderate weight loss, and 751 people were normal or obese/overweight. After 1:1 propensity score matching, there were 217 people each in obese/overweight group and normal group. The characteristics of gender, school type, grade and family economic level of the two groups were balanced after matching. The difference was statistically significant (P<0.05) between obese/overweight and normal group in the following: drinking of alcohol at high school, alcohol dependence, the maximum drinks at one time, drinking of alcohol at family gatherings, whether bought alcohol for others, whether their family members recommended drinking, whether they have tried to quit drinking in the past year, and the time of blush after drinking. The multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that the degree of alcohol dependence (the alcohol use disorder score ≥ 8) was a risk factor for overweight and obesity (OR=3.600, 95%CI: 1.244‒10.424). Besides, having bought alcohol for others and family members advising alcohol consumption were suggested to be protective factors for overweight and obesity (OR=0.525, 95%CI: 0.309‒0.890 and OR=0.377, 95%CI: 0.222‒0.641). ConclusionHigh school students who have alcohol dependence suffer a higher risk of obesity/overweight, while high school students who may have drinking behaviors but do not have alcohol dependence have a lower risk of obesity/overweight. It is critical to guide young people on drinking in terms of health.

RESUMEN Las actividades recreativas poseen numerosos efectos positivos en el comportamiento humano, esto puede favorecer a indicadores psicológicos de relevancia como la ansiedad percibida. En tal sentido, se planteó como propósito de la investigación determinar cómo influye un programa recreativo en la disminución de los niveles de ansiedad en estudiantes de bachillerato. La investigación es descriptiva-explicativa, de orden correlacional; se diagnostican intencionalmente a 30 estudiantes de bachillerato a través del test de Beck, antes y después de implementada una propuesta recreativa por ocho semanas. Los porcentajes de ansiedad disminuyeron a medida que se implementa la propuesta de intervención, tanto de forma general como en el análisis por género, al ser significativa la disminución (p=0.003). El presente estudio evidencia que las actividades recreativas pueden contribuir a la disminución de la ansiedad en adolescentes de bachiller, tanto para el género femenino como para el masculino. Se recomienda tres acciones a futuro: ampliar el tiempo de implementación de la propuesta de intervención, realizar estudios por género y direccionar la futura investigación a un nivel cuasiexperimental.


RESUMO As atividades recreativas têm numerosos efeitos positivos no comportamento humano, o que pode favorecer indicadores psicológicos relevantes, tais como a percepção de ansiedade. Neste sentido, o objectivo da investigação era determinar como um programa recreativo influencia a redução dos níveis de ansiedade dos estudantes do ensino secundário. A investigação é descritiva-explicativa, de ordem correlacional; 30 estudantes do ensino secundário foram intencionalmente diagnosticados através do teste Beck, antes e depois da implementação de uma proposta recreativa durante oito semanas. As percentagens de ansiedade diminuíram à medida que a proposta de intervenção foi sendo implementada, tanto em geral como na análise por género, uma vez que a diminuição foi significativa (p=0,003). O presente estudo mostra que as atividades recreativas podem contribuir para a redução da ansiedade nos adolescentes do ensino secundário, tanto para raparigas como para rapazes. Três ações futuras são recomendadas: prolongar o tempo de implementação da proposta de intervenção, realizar estudos por género e orientar a investigação futura para um nível quase experimental.


ABSTRACT Recreational activities have numerous positive effects on human behavior, this can favor relevant psychological indicators such as perceived anxiety. In this sense, the purpose of the research was to determine how a recreational program influences the reduction of anxiety levels in high school students. The research is descriptive-explanatory, correlational; 30 high school students are intentionally diagnosed through the Beck test, before and after implementing a recreational proposal for eight weeks. The percentages of anxiety decreased as the intervention proposal was implemented, both in general and in the analysis by gender, as the decrease was significant (p=0.003). The present study shows that recreational activities can contribute to the reduction of anxiety in high school adolescents, both for the female gender and for the male gender. Three future actions are recommended: extend the implementation time of the intervention proposal, carry out studies by gender and direct future research at a quasi-experimental level.

Background: Family environment plays a significant role in socio-emotional and educational adjustment in adolescents. In the present scenario, parents are in hurry to improve their standard of living and they have no time to engage in child-bearing activities. Low self-esteem is creating mental and psycho-social problems such as poor academic achievement, inadequate adjustments among the siblings and peers, impaired social functioning, suicide, and substance abuse among adolescents. Methodology: A School-based cross-sectional study was conducted among adolescents of Hubli taluka. Information was collected by a self-administered questionnaire with components for Systematic assessment of family environment (SAFE), Self-esteem scale, and Adjustment inventory for school students (AISS). Results: Among 600 adolescents, 85.6% of adolescents had Normal self-esteem, 95%of families were competent, however only 1-7% of the students had an excellent adjustment. Emotional and social adjustment was better compared to Educational adjustment. Adjustment behavior and family environment had a positive association. There was a significant difference in the adjustment scores among low self-esteem and normal self-esteem (p<0.001) and also among discordant and competent families. Conclusion: The adjustment behavior depends on a better family environment and normal self-esteem. The Family environment has a positive effect on self-esteem as well as adjustment behavior. School mental health services should be initiated.

The participants' demographic features, e-cigarette use and exposure to tobacco advertising were collected using the Chinese version of the Global Youth Tobacco Survey, and the factors affecting the intention to use e-cigarettes were identified using a multivariable logistic regression model.@*Results@#The 1 677 respondents included 875 boys (52.18%) and 802 girls (47.82%), and grade 1 to 3 junior high school students consisted of 33.93%, 35.00% and 31.07% of all respondents, respectively. There were 1 461 students that had heard of e-cigarettes (87.12%), 101 students with intention to use e-cigarettes (6.02%), and 24 current users (1.43%). Multivariable logistic regression analysis identified living in rural areas (OR=2.364, 95%CI: 1.442-3.875), having close friends that were smokers (OR=5.614, 95%CI: 3.404-9.258), having seen smoking via TV, video or movie in the past 30 days (OR=2.106, 95%CI: 1.259-3.523), having received free tobacco products (OR=3.887, 95%CI: 1.172-12.894), considering e-cigarettes as nicotine-free (OR=208.442, 95%CI: 55.713-779.856), and considering smoking making comfortable at party (OR=4.534, 95%CI: 1.853-11.090) as factors affecting intention to use e-cigarettes. There were 38.04% (638/1 677) of junior high school students with exposure to advertisements for e-cigarettes and related products, and stores, supermarkets, convenience stores, grocery, e-cigarette experience stores or offline retail stores were the primary places to contact e-cigarettes and related products.@*Conclusions@#The percentage of intention to use e-cigarettes was low among junior high school students of health promotion schools in Xihu District in 2021, and their intention to use e-cigarettes was mainly affected by close friends' smoking status and personal recognition.

Objective@#To a evaluate the effectiveness of comprehensive nutrition interventions among primary school students in Yiwu City, so as to provide insights into malnutrition control among children.@*Methods@#Grade 3 to 5 students were sampled from four primary schools in Yiwu City using a random cluster sampling method and randomly assigned into the intervention group and the control group. Students in the intervention group received comprehensive interventions, including nutritional health education, promotion of physical activities, nutritional meal support and creation of a nutritional campus, while students in the control group were given no interventions. The awareness of nutritional health knowledge, dietary behaviors and nutritional status were compared in students between the two groups prior to interventions and one year following interventions, and the effectiveness of interventions was evaluated using generalized estimating equations.@*Results@#Totally 879 students were enrolled. There were 440 students in the intervention group, including 243 males and 197 females, with a male to female ratio of 1︰0.81 and a mean age of (10.47±0.99) years; and there were 439 students in the control group, including 244 males and 195 females, with a male to female ratio of 1︰0.80 and a mean age of (10.35±1.02) years. Following comprehensive interventions, the awareness of “type of food”, “seven nutriments from food”, “eating at least 12 types of food daily”, “less than 6 g of daily salt intake”, “food composition in nutritional breakfast”, “nutritional labels of pure milk”, “no less than 60 min of daily exercise duration” and “too fat or too thin may threaten health” and the increase in the proportion of 3 and more types of food in breakfast were significantly higher among students in the intervention group than in the control group (all P<0.05); however, there was no statistical difference in the proportion of normal nutrition between the two groups (P>0.05).@*Conclusion@#The comprehensive nutritional interventions may effectively increase the awareness of nutrition health knowledge and improve dietary behaviors among primary school students.

ObjectiveTo investigate the alcohol drinking among high school students, determine the possible influencing factors, and provide scientific evidence for effective control of alcohol drinking among high school students. MethodsThis study adopted stratified cluster sampling and included 4 high schools in Changning District (including one vocational high school). Self-designed questionnaires were used to investigate alcohol drinking related knowledge and behavior among high school students. The questionnaire included demographics, alcohol drinking frequency and scenarios. SPSS 20.0 was used for Chi-square test and multivariate logistic regression analysis. ResultsThere were 811 high school students included in this study. The proportion of ever alcohol drinking was determined to be 48.09% (n=390) among students. Furthermore, 36.13% (n=293) reported alcohol drinking in the past year, and 14.80% (n=120) reported drinking in the past month. The proportion of excessive alcohol drinking was 8.26% (n=67) and that of alcohol dependence was 3.58% (n=29). Moreover, the proportion of Chinese Baijiu (Chinese liquor) drinking in the past month was significantly higher than that in the past year (P<0.05). In contrast, the proportions of wine and rice wine drinking in the past month was significantly lower than those in the past year (P<0.05). The logistic regression model suggested no alcohol drinking in the past 30 days, parents disagreeing to their children’s drinking, some of friends having alcohol drinking, higher frequency of attending friend gatherings, and smoking were significantly associated with alcohol drinking among the students. ConclusionAlcohol drinking is moderately prevalent among high school students. Possible influencing factors may be correlated to their parents and friends. It warrants targeted intervention measures to prevent and control the early alcohol drinking among adolescents to avert alcohol dependence.

In order to utilize the results of genetic tests for mental and behavioral changes aimed at disease prevention, it is important to acquire the right knowledge about genetic information. Learning the basics of genetic testing and information at school may help in taking adequate precautions against illness. In this study, to improve the knowledge on central dogma (flow of genetic information) and mutation, which are the basics of genetic testing, among children in the upper grades of elementary school, we devised an illustrative video and conducted educational activities through a test-linked illustrative video lecture (TLIV lecture). In addition, the degree of comprehension and the effectiveness of the TLIV lecture were evaluated using tests conducted before and after the lecture. Both fifth and sixth graders showed a low level of comprehension (50 points or less) before the lecture. On performing the same test after the TLIV lecture, both groups showed a high degree of understanding (65 points or more), a significant increase. From the above results, it was shown that the TLIV lecture that we devised could be used as an effective tool for improving knowledge on the above-mentioned content for fifth graders and above.

Background The correlation between depression and sleep quality is well established in adults, but similar evidence is lacking in adolescents. Objective To study the sleep quality, the positive rate of depressive symptoms, and their correlation among middle school students in Shanghai, so as to provide a basis for providing mental health and sleep management to this group of students. Methods From September to November 2020, using multi-stage stratified cluster random sampling method, a total of 7796 students from 32 middle schools in 16 districts of Shanghai were selected to conduct a questionnaire survey. The questionnaire for middle school students of the 2020 Shanghai Students’ Common Diseases and Health Influencing Factors Surveillance was used to collect students' demographic information, history of smoking, history of drinking, and history of chronic diseases; the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used to assess sleep quality; and the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale was used to evaluate depressive symptoms. χ2 test was used to compare qualitative data between groups. Binary logistic regression was used to analyze the correlation between sleep quality and depressive symptoms among middle school students in Shanghai. Results After excluding incomplete questionnaires, a total of 7160 valid questionnaires were collected. The average sleep time of middle school students in Shanghai was (7.54±1.15) h. Among them, 84.8% reported insufficient sleep time < 9 h, and only 15.2% reported sleep time ≥9 h. In addition, 9.2% of the students had poor sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index ≥8 points). The sleep quality of urban students was worse than that of suburban students. The sleep quality of girls was worse than that of boys. The sleep quality of students in the third grade of middle school was worse than that of students in the first and second grades of middle school. Students with smoking history, drinking history, and chronic disease history had worse sleep quality than those without (P<0.05). The positive rate of depressive symptoms among middle school students in Shanghai was 22.2%, among which 7.0% reported possible depressive symptoms and 15.2% reported definite depressive symptoms. The positive rate of depressive symptoms in female students (26.1%) was higher than that in male students (18.5%); among different grades of middle school, the positive rate of depressive symptoms of the third grade middle school students was the highest (24.1%); the positive rates of depressive symptoms in students with smoking history, drinking history, and chronic disease history were higher than those without; the positive rate of depressive symptoms was higher in students with poor sleep quality (P<0.05). The results of logistic regression analysis indicated that the students with poor sleep quality showed higher risks of reporting depressive symptoms, and the OR (95%CI) was 17.064 (14.024-20.764). Conclusion The positive rates of poor sleep quality and depressive symptoms of middle school students in Shanghai are high, and there is a significant correlation between these two indicators. For students’ mental health and sleep management, more attention should be paid to the quality in addition to the quantity of sleep.

Objective To investigate the prevalence and risk factors of injury among both primary and middle school students in Changning District, Shanghai, and to provide evidence for injury prevention. Methods In 2018, data of basic characteristics and injury-related factors were obtained through field questionnaire survey among the selected primary and middle schools (2 of each). Results The study finally included 1 821 students, with injury incidence rate of 30.1%. Among them, the injury incidence rate for the primary schools was 32.0%, and 28.8% for the middle schools. The top three injury types were falls, sharps injuries, and blunt injuries. Age, gender, myopia, and injury-related knowledge/behaviors were significantly related to injury incidence. Conclusion Falls should still be the priority of injury prevention for primary/middle school students in Changning District. The effect of reducing injuries can be achieved by improving health education about injury-related knowledge/behaviors.

Objective@#To evaluate the caries preventive effect and economic outcome of an oral health promotion model in rural primary schools in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.@*Methods@# In November 2015, a baseline survey was conducted on the caries prevalence of rural first graders in program areas, and then a program intervention was carried out on the first graders of target primary schools. The intervention methods included the distribution of oral health care products, oral health education, teacher training, etc. In 2020, the method of cluster random sampling was adopted to include the sixth graders who received the program intervention as first graders and were still available in 2020 as the intervention group. During this period, the sixth graders transferred from foreign schools who failed to receive the program intervention as first graders were included in the non-intervention group. The caries preventive effect was evaluated by analyzing the caries epidemiological data of 2 652 children aged 11-13 years, comparing the intervention and non-intervention group. The cost of the program was estimated by the structural analysis method. A decision tree model was established by TreeAge pro2019 and incorporated into the effect parameters and cost parameters for cost-effectiveness analysis and sensitivity analysis.@* Results @# The prevalence of caries in the intervention group was 54.8%, and the mean DMFT was 1.36 ± 1.64, both of which were lower than those in the non-intervention group. The difference in prevalence and mean DMFT between the two groups was statistically significant (P < 0.05). It costs CNY 319.83 per child to reduce suffering from caries. The number of patients with caries in the intervention group was the most sensitive indicator of an economic effect. The probability of a cost-effectiveness advantage for the program was 92.2%. @*Conclusion @# This oral health promotion model used in rural schools demonstrated a caries preventive effect that was very likely economically advantageous. It is of practical significance to improve and promote this model in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

Objective@#To investigate the sleep status among primary and middle school students in Zhoushan City, Zhejiang Province, so as to provide insights into improving the sleep quality among primary and middle school students.@*Methods@#A district and a county was selected using the cluster random sampling method from Zhoushan City in October, 2019, and grades 4 to 6 primary school students, junior high school and high school students were sampled as the study subjects. Students' gender, grade, residing in schools, duration of homework and duration of extracurricular classes were collected using the questionnaires of the 2019 national program for common diseases and health risk factors surveillance and intervention program among Chinese students. According to the Plan for the Comprehensive Prevention and Control of Myopia among Children and Adolescents, daily sleep duration of 10 h and longer among primary school students, 9 h and longer among junior high school students and 8 h and longer among high school students were defined as adequate sleep, and the proportion of adequate sleep was estimated among primary and middle school students.@*Results@#Totally 3 042 students were enrolled, including 1 587 boys (52.17%) and 1 455 girls (47.83%), 996 primary school students (32.74%), 1 030 junior high school students (33.86%), 758 ordinary high school students (24.92%) and 258 vocational high school students (8.48%). The mean sleep duration was (9.23±1.10) h among primary school students, (8.09±1.05) h among junior high school students, (7.20±1.26) h among ordinary high school students and (7.97±1.03) h among vocational high school students, respectively, and the proportion of adequate sleep was 26.31% among primary school students, 22.82% among junior high school students, 22.56% among ordinary high school students and 66.67% among vocational high school students, respectively. A relatively higher proportion of adequate sleep was seen among primary school students in Grade 4 (33.63%) and with homework duration of less than 1 h (34.53%); among junior high school students in Grade 1 (37.76%), residing in schools (40.00%), studying in county schools (30.87%), with homework duration of less than 1 h (34.69%) and less than 1 h duration of extracurricular classes (33.33%); among male ordinary high school students (28.03%), and ordinary high school students in Grade 1 (28.30%), residing in schools (26.18%) and studying in district schools (25.83%); among male vocational high school students (69.06%) and vocational high school students residing in schools (73.14%).@*Conclusion@#The proportion of adequate sleep is low among primary and middle school students in Zhoushan City. The homework duration and duration of extracurricular classes are recommended to be reduced to ensure adequate sleep among primary and middle school students.
