RESUMO

Objective To investigate the personality traits, anxiety and depression in patients with leukemia. Methods A cross-sectional survey was performed in 120 patients with leukemia and 118 age and gender-matched controls. Personality was assessed using the Type A Behavior Pattern Questionnaire (TABPQ). Emotion was ascertained using the self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) and self-rating depression scale (SDS). The relationship between personality type A and anxiety and depression was evaluated by Pearson correlation analysis. Results The prevalence of personality type A was significantly higher in patients with leukemia than healthy controls [71.67 % (86/120) vs. 30.51 % (36/118), P< 0.01]. Patients with leukemia also had higher prevalence of anxiety and depression compared with healthy controls [36.67%(44/120) vs. 9.32%(11/118), P< 0.01; 29.17 % (35/120) vs. 5.93 % (7/118), P< 0.01]. Pearson correlation analysis showed that time-hurry (TH) and competition-hostility (CH) of personality type A correlated positively with anxiety (r=0.292, r= 0.277, respectively; both P< 0.05). Conclusion TH and CH of personality type A are associated with anxiety in leukemia patients.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between emotional labor and burnout, and whether the levels of self-efficacy and type A personality characteristics increase the risk of burnout in a sample of Korean female dental hygienists. Participants were 807 female dental hygienists with experience in performing customer service for one year or more in dental clinics, dental hospitals, or general hospitals in Korea. Data were collected using a structured self-administered questionnaire. A hierarchical multiple linear regression analysis was used to examine the effects of emotional labor on burnout, and to elucidate the additive effects of self-efficacy and type A personality on burnout. The results showed that “overload and conflict in customer service,”“emotional disharmony and hurt,” and “lack of a supportive and protective system in the organization” were positively associated with burnout. With reference to the relationship between personality traits and burnout, we found that personal traits such as self-efficacy and type A personality were significantly related to burnout, which confirmed the additive effects of self-efficacy and type A personality on burnout. These results indicate that engaging in excessive and prolonged emotional work in customer service roles is more likely to increase burnout. Additionally, an insufficient organizational supportive and protective system toward the negative consequences of emotional labor was found to accelerate burnout. The present findings also revealed that personality traits such as self-efficacy and type A personality are also important in understanding the relationship between emotional labor and burnout.

RESUMO

The median age of marriage has raised and its rate has declined in recent years. A suitable spouse is one of the main concerns of everyone’s life, which could be affected by family, personality and society effects on taste and interest of people. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between personality, family and society on spouse selection criteria among college students. In this cross-sectional study, 250 college students in both gender and study levels were randomly selected. Students were asked to answer validated questionnaires on spouse selection. The obtained data were analyzed by appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical methods using computer software. Results showed that family education has positive significant correlation with education (R2=0.42, p<0.05), religion (R2=0.51, p<0.05), culture (R2=0.38, p<0.05), and manner (R2=0.53, p<0.05) criteria in both genders, while no correlation was found between family’s education and either economic (R2=0.02, p<0.05) or physical criteria (R2=0.1, p<0.05). In addition, male students had significantly higher rate of perfectionism than females (p<0.05). Girls’ priority was good ethical personality, behavioral characteristics, religious beliefs, financial status, education, and beauty respectively, while similarly with minor differences, male priority in spouse selection was good ethical personality, behavioral characteristics, religious beliefs, beauty, education level, and financial situation. The financial situation of girls for men in this study could indicate not only the importance of economic problems in our society, but also greedy wishes, which have been created in recent decades. According to the present study, family and society have more influence than personality on mate selection.

RESUMO

Cardiovascular diseases are well known to be associated with several psychiatric illnesses. Most of the related psychological problems were type A personality, stress related problems, anxiety, and depressive illnesses. The dimensions of the associations are various from risk factor to triggering factor. With recent advances in the understanding of the mechanisms of heart attacks, the pathogenesis model by type A personality or depression might be associated with both longstanding atherogenic components or risk factors and decisive momentum to trigger the heart attack. Accordingly, in addition to the management of the unhealthy behavior related to the type A personality, intervention for the acute psychologic crisis might be equally important. Moreover, the association between the type A personality and cardiovascular diseases is observed in the primary prevention as well as secondary prevention studies. Due to the nature of the associated psychological problems, the background of the social environments seems to be deeply involved in the associations. The understanding of the complexity of the association is the key to further studies.

RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the effect of type-A character on endothelial function in the elderly. Methods:According to type-A character scale of Zhang Baiyuan, type-A character group and non-type-A character group were screened from the normal elderly, 60 eases for each respectively. Flow-mediated diastolic function of brachial artery was examined by high-frequency eehocardiography, which was reflected by diastolic inner diameter changing rate (D %). Other parameters included height, weight, body mass index (BMI), systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP), fasting blood glucose (FPG), triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol(TC), low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), nitric oxide (NO), endothelin (ET)and angiotensin Ⅱ (AngⅡ). All of the parameters and the scores of type-A character were compared and analyzed between the two groups. ResultS:(1) The levels of SBP and DBP were significantly higher in type A character group than those of non-type A character group (P<0.05). There were no significant differences in values of FPG, TC, TG and LDL-C between two groups (P>0.05). (2) The values of D% and NO were significantly lower in type A character group than those of non-type-A character group (P<0.05 ). The values of Ang Ⅱand ET were significantly higher in type-A character group than those of non-type-A group (P<0.05 ). (3)Pearson correlation analysis indicated that the scores of type-A character were positively correlated with Ang Ⅱ, ET, SBP and DBP (P<0.05, P<0.01), but negatively correlated with D% and NO (P<0.05). Multiple linear stepwise regression analysis showed that only Ang Ⅱwas an independent risk factor for type-A character. Conclusion:h was showed that the increased Ang Ⅱinduced by abnormal activation of reunin-angiotensin-aldosteerone system (RAAS)may be the main mechanism of endothelial dysfunction in the eldedy with type-A character.
