RESUMO

SUMMARY: The distribution of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) was observed in the retinal wholemount of native chicken (Gallus gallus domestricus) of Bangladesh by using light microscopy. We considered five different anatomic regions (central, nasal, temporal, dorsal, and ventral) of Nissl stained wholemount, and the RGCs were counted, plotted, and measured accordingly. The average area of the retina was 431.75 mm2 while the total number of ganglion cells was 2124431 on average. Only the central area of the retina was the peak density (10400 cells/mm2) area, signifying the acute visual area, whilst the maximum spatial resolving power was 11 cycles/degree. The overall concentration of RGCs gradually declined towards the periphery but the size of cells generally decreased towards centrally. The size of ganglion cell was not uniform (12 to 180 µm2), specifically the central retina, just above the optic disc was packed with tiny-sized cells. The number, topographic distribution, and size of RGCs in native chicken signified their domesticated or terrestrial characters, uneven visual acuteness, and possibly only the central retina was the area for fine vision as the function of RGCs.


RESUMEN: En este studio se observó la distribución de las células ganglionares en la retina (CGR) de pollo nativo (Gallus gallus domesticus) de Bangladesh mediante el uso de microscopía óptica. Consideramos cinco regiones anatómicas diferentes (central, nasal, temporal, dorsal y ventral). Las muestras de CGR se tiñeron con Nissl, posteriormente, se midieron y contó el número de células totales. El área promedio de la retina fue de 431,75 mm2, mientras que el promedio del número total de células ganglionares fue de 2124431. El área central de la retina fue el área de densidad máxima (10400 células / mm2), señalando el área visual aguda, mientras que el poder de resolución espacial máximo fue de 11 ciclos / grado. La concentración general de CGR disminuyó gradualmente hacia la periferia, sin embargo, el tamaño de las células disminuyó hacia el centro. El tamaño de las CGR no fue uniforme (12 a 180 mm2), específicamente en la retina central, por encima del disco óptico, aumentaron significativamente las células pequeñas. The authors studied the morphometry and the topographical distribution of Retinal Ganglion Cells (RGCs) in four nocturnal raptors of the order of Strigiformes, family of Strigidae: little owl, tawny owl, scops owl, eared owl. In order to recognize specialized retinal vision areas (fovea and visual streak), the number of RGCs/mm2 and the soma size in the four retinal fields (dorsal, ventral, temporal and nasal) by the histological analysis of retinal radial sections were recorded. A temporal fovea was identified in little owl, tawny owl and eared owl while in scops owl this visual area was localized near the fundus oculi. A radial visual streak ventrally directed was pointed out in the retinas of the four raptors with different shape according to its width. The Authors linked the obtained data with the predatory behavior of nocturnal raptors in their habitat.


Se estudió la morfometría y la distribución topográfica de las células ganglionares de la retina (CGR) en cuatro aves rapaces nocturnas del orden de los Strigiformes, familia Strigidae: búho pequeño, mochuelo, autillo, y cárabo. Con el objetivo de definir las áreas de visión retiniana especializadas (fóvea y campo visual), se registró el número de CGRs/mm2 y el tamaño del soma en los cuatro campos retinianos (dorsal, ventral, temporal y nasal), mediante análisis histológico de las secciones radiales de la retina. Se identificó una fóvea temporal en mochuelo, búho leonado y búho pequeño, mientras que en el búho real, esta área visual se localizó cerca del fondo de ojo. Se observó un campo radial visual dirigido ventralmente en las retinas de las cuatro aves rapaces, con diferentes formas según su extensión. Se relacionaron los datos obtenidos con el comportamiento predatorio de aves rapaces nocturnas en su hábitat.

Retinal Ganglion Cells (RGCs) in two diurnal raptors, the buzzard (Buteo buteo) and kestrel (Falco tinnunculus), and in two nocturnal raptors, the little owl (Athene noctua) and tawny owl (Strix aluco), were studied in order to highlight their topographical distribution, taking into account the soma size. Cell density (RGCs/mm2) and median soma area from histological radial sections in four retinal fields (dorsal, ventral, temporal and nasal) were recorded in order to identify specialized retinal vision areas. The results showed a different RGCs distribution between diurnal and nocturnal raptors related to the location of the foveas and shape of the horizontal streak, confirming the bibliographic data. In diurnal raptors, a higher cell density was found in the temporal and central retinal fields as revealed by the presence of a temporal and a central fovea which showed a "horizontal streak". In nocturnal raptors the cell density was higher in the peripheral temporal field likely due to a temporal fovea. A peak in cell density observed in the ventral field, especially in the retina of little owls, might be linked to a more "radial visual streak". Comparing the data obtained we highlighted that the morphology and the number of RGCs are closely linked to the habitat and to the type of predation.


Se estudiaron las células ganglionares de la retina (RGC) en dos aves rapaces diurnas, el ratonero (Buteo buteo) y el cernícalo (Falco tinnunculus), y en dos aves rapaces nocturnas, el mochuelo (Athene noctua) y el búho leonado (Strix aluco), buscando resaltar su distribución topográfica, teniendo en cuenta el tamaño del soma. Se registraron la densidad celular (RGCs/mm2) y la media del área del soma de las secciones histológicas radiales en cuatro campos retinianos (dorsal, ventral, temporal y nasal) para identificar áreas de visión retinianas especializadas. Los resultados mostraron una distribución diferente de RGCs entre las rapaces diurnas y nocturnas relacionadas con la ubicación de las fóveas y la forma de la línea horizontal, lo que confirma los datos bibliográficos. En las aves rapaces diurnas, se encontró una densidad celular más alta en los campos de retina temporales y centrales como lo revela la presencia de una fóvea temporal y central que mostraba una "veta horizontal". En aves rapaces nocturnas, la densidad celular fue mayor en el campo temporal periférico probablemente debido a una fóvea temporal. Un aumento en la densidad celular, observado en el campo ventral, especialmente en la retina de los pequeños buhos, podría estar relacionado con una "línea visual radial". Comparando los datos obtenidos, resaltamos que la morfología y el número de RGC están estrechamente relacionados con el hábitat y el tipo de depredación.

Monocular deprivation results in anatomical changes in the visual cortex in favor of the non-deprived eye. Although the retina forms part of the visual pathway, there is scarcity of data on the effect of monocular deprivation on its structure. The objective of this study was to describe the effects of monocular deprivation on the retinal ganglion cell dendritic features. The study design was quasi-experimental. 30 rabbits (18 experimental, 12 controls) were examined. Monocular deprivation was achieved through unilateral lid suture in the experimental animals. The rabbits were observed for three weeks. Each week, 6 experimental and 3 control animals were euthanized, their retina harvested and processed for light microscopy. Photomicrographs of the retina were taken using a digital camera then entered into FIJI software for analysis. The number of primary branches, terminal branches and dendritic field area among the non-deprived eyes increased by 66.7%(p=0.385), 400%(p=0.002), and 88.4%(p=0.523) respectively. Non-deprived eyes had 114.3% more terminal dendrites (p=0.002) compared to controls. Among deprived eyes, all variables measured had a gradual rise in the first two weeks followed by decline with further deprivation. There were no statistically significant differences noted between the deprived and control eyes. Monocular deprivation results in increase in synaptic contacts in the non-deprived eye, with reciprocal changes occurring in the deprived eye.


La privación monocular de la visión resulta en cambios anatómicos en la corteza visual en favor del ojo no privado. Aunque la retina forma parte de la vía visual, hay escasez de datos sobre el efecto de la privación monocular en su estructura. El objetivo de esta investigación fue describir los efectos de la privación monocular en las características de las dendritas de las células ganglionares de la retina. Se diseñó un estudio cuasi-experimental. Se examinaron 30 conejos (18 experimentales, 12 controles). La privación monocular se logró a través de la sutura unilateral del párpado en los animales de experimentación. Los conejos fueron observados durante tres semanas. Cada semana, 6 animales experimentales y 3 control fueron eutanasiados, donde se obtuvo la retina y fue procesada para realizar microscopía óptica. Las microfotografías de la retina fueron tomadas con una cámara digital y luego se utilizó el software FIJI para su análisis. El número de dendritas primarias, terminales y el área del campo de dendritas en los ojos no privados aumentó un 66,7% (p=0,385), 400% (p=0,002), y 88,4% (p=0,523), respectivamente. Los ojos no privados, tenían 114,3% más dendritas terminales (p=0,002) en comparación con los controles. Entre los ojos privados, todas las variables medidas tuvieron un aumento gradual en las dos primeras semanas, seguido de descenso con mayor privación. No se observaron diferencias estadísticamente significativas entre los ojos privados y el grupo control. En conclusion, la privación monocular produce un aumento de los contactos sinápticos en los ojos no privados, con cambios recíprocos que se manifiestan en los ojos privados de la visión.

RESUMO

Mechanical pressure plays an important role in many physiological and pathological processes. Mimicking the mechanical pressure present in vitro is necessary for related research, but usually requires expensive and complicated equipment. In this study we created a simple pressure culture system based on the transwell culture system. By cutting off the top rim of the transwell insert, the cells were compressed between the insert membrane and the well floor. The new pressure culture system was proven effective in that it induced cell morphological change, integrin β1 upregulation, actin polymerization and growth change in rat retinal ganglion cells, human nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells and mice embryonic fibroblasts. Though the pressure value is immeasurable and inhomogeneous, the easily available culture system still provides a choice for the laboratories that do not have access to the better, but much more expensive pressure culture equipment.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the association between age and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness measured by Cirrus high-definition (HD) spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) in healthy Korean subjects. METHODS: A total of 302 eyes from 155 healthy Korean subjects (age range, 20 to 79 years) underwent RNFL thickness measurements using the Cirrus HD-OCT. Average, quadrant, and clock-hour RNFL thickness parameters were analyzed in terms of age using linear mixed effect models. RESULTS: Average RNFL demonstrated a slope of -2.1 microm per decade of age (p < 0.001). In quadrant analysis, superior (-3.4 microm/decade, p < 0.001) and inferior (-2.9 microm/decade, p < 0.001) quadrants showed steeper slopes, whereas temporal (-1.1 microm/decade, p < 0.001) and nasal (-1.0 microm/decade, p < 0.001) quadrants revealed shallower slopes. Among the 12 clock-hour sectors, clock hours 6 (-4.5 microm/decade, p < 0.001) and 1 (-4.1 microm/decade, p < 0.001) showed the greatest tendency to decline with age; RNFLs of the 3 (-0.2 microm/decade, p = 0.391) and 4 (-0.6 microm/decade, p = 0.052) o'clock hour sectors did not show significant decay. CONCLUSIONS: RNFL thickness was associated with age, especially in superior and inferior areas. The topographic distribution of correlation between age and RNFL thickness was not uniform.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of the scanning laser ophthalmoscope (SLO) guided re-test mode on short- and long-term measurement variability of peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness obtained by spectral domain-SLO optical coherence tomography (SD-SLO/OCT). METHODS: Seventy five healthy eyes were scanned 3 times per day (intra-session variability) by both the SLO guided re-test mode and the independent mode of SD-SLO/OCT. Subjects were scanned 3 times by both modes at visits within a 2-week interval (inter-session variability). For testing longitudinal variability, 3 separate exams were performed over 6 months by both modes. The coefficient of variation (CV), reproducibility coefficient (RC) and intraclass correlation coefficient of RNFL thickness were compared between the two modes. RESULTS: The intra-session RC and CV ranged from 5.4 to 12.9 microns and 1.76% to 5.72% when measured by independent mode and 5.4 to 12.5 microns and 1.75% to 5.58% by re-test mode, respectively. The inter-session RC and CV ranged from 5.8 to 13.3 microns and 1.89% to 5.78% by independent mode and 5.8 to 12.7 microns and 1.90% to 5.54% by re-test mode, respectively. Intra-session and inter-session variability measurements were not significantly different between the two modes. The longitudinal RC and CV ranged from 8.5 to 19.2 microns and 2.79% to 7.08% by independent mode and 7.5 to 14.4 microns and 2.33% to 6.22% by re-test mode, respectively. Longitudinal measurement variability was significantly lower when measured by the re-test mode compared to the independent mode (average, p = 0.011). CONCLUSIONS: The SLO guided re-test mode for RNFL thickness measurement in SD-SLO/OCT employing a tracking system improved long-term reproducibility by reducing variability induced by inconsistent scan circle placement.

Purpose: To investigate the value of temporal retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFLtemporal) thickness in the prediction of malingering. Materials and Methods: This prospective, cross-sectional study was conducted on 33 military conscripts with optic disc temporal pallor (ODTP) and 33 age-and sex-matched healthy controls. Initial visual acuity (VAi) and visual acuity after simulation examination techniques (VAaset) were assessed. The subjects whose VAaset were two or more lines higher than VAi were determined as malingerers. Thickness of the peripapillary RNFL was determined with OCT (Stratus OCT™, Carl Zeiss Meditec, Inc.). RNFLtemporal thickness of the subjects were categorized into one of the 1+ to 4+ groups according to 50% confidence interval (CI), 25% CI and 5% CI values which were assessed in the control group. The VAs were converted to LogMAR-VAs for statistical comparisons. Results: A significant difference was found only in the temporal quadrant of RNFL thickness in subjects with ODTP (P=0.002). Mean LogMAR-VA increased significantly after SETs (P<0.001). Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values of categorized RNFLtemporal thickness in diagnosing malingering were 84.6%, 75.0%, 68.8%, 88.2%, respectively. ROC curve showed that RNFLtemporal thickness of 67.5 μm is a significant cut-off point in determining malingering (P=0.001, area under the curve:0.862). The correlations between LogMAR-VAs and RNFLtemporal thicknesses were significant; the correlation coefficient for LogMAR-VAi was lower than the correlation for LogMAR-VAaset (r=−0.447, P=0.009 for LogMAR-VAi; r=−0.676, P<0.001 for LogMAR-VAaset). Conclusions: RNFLtemporal thickness assessment may be a valuable tool in determining malingering in subjects with ODTP objectively.

The effect of hypoxia on the release of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) in transformed rat retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and the effect of agmatine on the hypoxia-induced production of TNF-alpha in RGCs were evaluated. RGCs were cultured under hypoxic conditions with 5% oxygen, with or without 100 microM agmatine. The expression levels of TNF-alpha and its receptor-1 (TNF-R1) were investigated by Western blot analysis. After 6 hours of hypoxia, we noted an increase in TNF-alpha production in RGCs. Agmatine significantly reduced TNF-alpha level after 12 hours of hypoxic treatment. The expression of TNF-R1 was not affected by the hypoxia or agmatine treatment. Our results show that agmatine inhibits the TNF-alpha production of RGCs in hypoxic condition. These results demonstrate a possible neuroprotective mechanism for agmatine against hypoxic damage in RGCs.

The retina is a highly differentiated tissue with a complex layered structure that has been extensively characterized. However, most of the previous studies focused on the histology of the central retina while little is known about the cellular composition, organization and function of the marginal retina. Recent research has identified a subpopulation of multipotential progenitor cells in the marginal regions of the retina, closest to the ciliary body ("ciliary marginal zone"). These cells are capable of differentiation in response to an appropriate stimulus. Thus, it is possible that the structure and composition of the marginal retina are distinct from those of the central retina to accommodate the potential addition of newly formed neurons. To characterize the cellular profile of the chick marginal retina, we labeled it immunohistochemically for markers whose staining pattern is well established in the central retina: calbindin, calretinin, protein kinase C, and choline acetyltransferase. Calbindin was present at very low levels in the marginal retina putative photoreceptor layer. Calretinin-positive horizontal cells were also sparse close to the ciliary marginal zone. The bipolar cells in the marginal outer plexiform layer were positive for anti-protein kinase C antibodies, but the density of labeling was also decreased in relation to the central retina. In contrast, the marginal starburst cholinergic amacrine cell pattern was very similar to the central retina. From these data we conclude that the structure of the marginal retina is significantly different from that of the central retina. In particular, the expression of late retina markers in the marginal retina decreased in comparison to the central retina.

To study the dendritic morphology of retinal ganglion cells in wild-type mice we intracellularly injected these cells with Lucifer yellow in an in vitro preparation of the retina. Subsequently, quantified values of dendritic thickness, number of branching points and level of stratification of 73 Lucifer yellow-filled ganglion cells were analyzed by statistical methods, resulting in a classification into 9 groups. The variables dendritic thickness, number of branching points per cell and level of stratification were independent of each other. Number of branching points and level of stratification were independent of eccentricity, whereas dendritic thickness was positively dependent (r = 0.37) on it. The frequency distribution of dendritic thickness tended to be multimodal, indicating the presence of at least two cell populations composed of neurons with dendritic diameters either smaller or larger than 1.8 æm ("thin" or "thick" dendrites, respectively). Three cells (4.5 percent) were bistratified, having thick dendrites, and the others (95.5 percent) were monostratified. Using k-means cluster analysis, monostratified cells with either thin or thick dendrites were further subdivided according to level of stratification and number of branching points: cells with thin dendrites were divided into 2 groups with outer stratification (0-40 percent) and 2 groups with inner (50-100 percent) stratification, whereas cells with thick dendrites were divided into one group with outer and 3 groups with inner stratification. We postulate, that one group of cells with thin dendrites resembles cat ß-cells, whereas one group of cells with thick dendrites includes cells that resemble cat a-cells.

PURPOSE: To obtain retinal nerve fibre layer thickness measurements by optical coherence tomography (OCT) in normal Indian population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Total of 118 randomly selected eyes of 118 normal Indian subjects of both sex and various age groups underwent retinal nerve fiber layer thickness analysis by Stratus OCT 3000 V 4.0.1. The results were evaluated and compared to determine the normal retinal nerve fiber layer thickness measurements and its variations with sex and age. RESULTS: Mean +/- standard deviation retinal nerve fiber layer thickness for various quadrants of superior, inferior, nasal, temporal and along the entire circumference around the optic nerve head were 138.2 +/- 21.74, 129.1 +/- 25.67, 85.71 +/- 21, 66.38 +/- 17.37 and 104.8 +/- 38.81 microm, respectively. There was no significant difference in the measurements between males and females and no significant correlation with respect to age. CONCLUSION: Our results provide the normal retinal nerve fiber layer thickness measurements and its variations with age and sex in Indian population.

We performed a quantitative analysis of M and P cell mosaics of the common-marmoset retina. Ganglion cells were labeled retrogradely from optic nerve deposits of Biocytin. The labeling was visualized using horseradish peroxidase (HRP) histochemistry and 3-3'diaminobenzidine as chromogen. M and P cells were morphologically similar to those found in Old- and New-World primates. Measurements were performed on well-stained cells from 4 retinas of different animals. We analyzed separate mosaics for inner and outer M and P cells at increasing distances from the fovea (2.5-9 mm of eccentricity) to estimate cell density, proportion, and dendritic coverage. M cell density decreased towards the retinal periphery in all quadrants. M cell density was higher in the nasal quadrant than in other retinal regions at similar eccentricities, reaching about 740 cells/mm² at 2.5 mm of temporal eccentricity, and representing 8-14 percent of all ganglion cells. P cell density increased from peripheral to more central regions, reaching about 5540 cells/mm² at 2.5 mm of temporal eccentricity. P cells represented a smaller proportion of all ganglion cells in the nasal quadrant than in other quadrants, and their numbers increased towards central retinal regions. The M cell coverage factor ranged from 5 to 12 and the P cell coverage factor ranged from 1 to 3 in the nasal quadrant and from 5 to 12 in the other quadrants. These results show that central and peripheral retinal regions differ in terms of cell class proportions and dendritic coverage, and their properties do not result from simply scaling down cell density. Therefore, differences in functional properties between central and peripheral vision should take these distinct regional retinal characteristics into account.

PURPOSE: To quantitatively assess the normative values for peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thickness with Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT 3) in Indian subjects. METHODS: The peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer of 146 normal subjects was imaged on OCT 3 in this cross-sectional study. Thickness of the RNFL around the disc was determined with three 3.4 mm diameter circle OCT scan. The RNFL thickness was measured in four quadrants; superior, nasal, inferior and temporal. The data was analysed using SAS commercial statistical software. Influence of age and gender was evaluated on various measured parameters using unpaired t test, one-way analysis variance (ANOVA) and Pearson's correlation coefficient. RESULTS: One hundred and forty six eyes of 146 patients, 84 males and 62 females were studied. The average RNFL thickness in the sample population under study was 104.27 +/- 8.51 (95% CI 87.25-121). The RNFL was thickest in the inferior quadrant, followed by the superior quadrant, and progressively less in nasal and temporal quadrant. The difference between inferior and superior quadrants was not statistically significant. Age had a significant negative correlation with average RNFL thickness (r = -0.321, P = 0.000) and with average superior (r = -0.233, P = 0.005) and average inferior RNFL thickness (r = -0.234, P = 0.004). There was no effect of gender on various RNFL thickness parameters. CONCLUSIONS: RNFL thickness is significantly correlated with age, but not with gender. This normative database of RNFL thickness with OCT in Indian eyes is similar to previously reported values in normal Asian eyes.

The effect of congenital hypothyroidism on the visual system of Wistar rats was studied by determining neuron density in the retinal ganglion cell layer. Retinae of adult rats from mothers treated with propylthiouracil, 50 mg/day, starting on the l5th day of pregnancy (PTU group), and of adult rats from untreated mothers (control group) were examined. Retinae were prepared, and the neurons in the nasotemporal region located above the optic disc were counted. Hypothyroid rats showed a significant reduction in the retinal area (about 6.8 per cent), when compared to controls. The cell density in the retinal ganglion cell layer was significantly decreased in 6 PTUtreated compared to 5 control retinae in total (2,793 ñ 330 vs 3,704 ñ 662 neurons/mm2), nasal (3,031 ñ 580 vs 3,853 ñ 699 neurons/mm2) and temporal (2,555 ñ 156 vs 3,555 ñ 827 neurons/mm2) regions. These alterations in a region considered to be one of the most specialized in the visual process suggest a structural deficiency induced by congenital hypothyroidism, with a possible decrease in the vísual acuity of the rat.

La neurogénesis de las células colinoceptivas que expresan receptores nicotínicos colinérgicos en la retina de pollo, fue estudiada mediante técnica inmunohistoquímica por doble marcación con el anticuerpo monoclonal anti bromodeoxy-uridine (BRDU), que marca los núcleos de las células y con el anticuerpo monoclonal anti receptores nicotínicos colinérgicos (nAChR), que marca el citoplasma de las células. La génesis de esta población neuroniana se produce durante el día embrionario cinco (E-5), iniciándose en la región central de la retina, en la capa nuclear interna, para luego progresar hacia la capa ganglionar y regiones más periféricas de la retina.

The M-ganglion cell distribution was studied in the retinae of New World monkeys, the diurnal Cebus and the nocturnal Aotus. Retinal whole mounts were stained by the neurofibrillar method of Gros-Schultze. The M-ganglion cell distribution in the Cebus and Aotus is similar to that reported for Old World primates, such as the Macaca. The M-ganglion cell density peak occurs in the foveal slope and declines towards the periphery. There is a nasotemporal asymmetry: in the Cebus retina the M-ganglion cell density is 1.2-4.3 times higher in the nasal when compared to the temporal region at the equivalent eccentricities; in the Aotus, the nasotemporal asymmetry is smaller, 1.6-2.2 higher in the nasal region. We compared the M-ganglion cell density with previously published values for the density of the total population of ganglion cells and observed a larger proportion of M-ganglion cells in the Aotus, when compared with Cebus or Macaca

In some mammals a large portion of the retinal neurons of the ganglion cell layer are not ganglion cells. These neurons, lacking axons which pass to the brain via the optic nerve, are termed displaced amacrine cells. The present study assessed the number of displaced amacrine cells in the thirteen-lined ground squirrel (Spermophilus tridecemlineatus). We compared the number of labeled cells in the ganglion cell layer after HRP injection of optic tracts and target nuclei with the total number of neurons in the ganglion cell layer. We conclude that approximately one half of the neurons in the ganglion cell layer are displaced amacrine cells, the other one half are ganglion cells. The displaced amacrine cells are on the average smaller than the ganglion cells. Our results provide a rationale for renewed study of relation of ganglion cell morphology and physiological functional type in this species

Tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), the rate limiting enzyme in the conversion of tyrosine to DOPA, is a reliable marker for catecholaminergic (dopaminergic) neurons. To investigate the distribution of dopamine in the retina of the thirteen-lined ground squirrel (Spermophilus tridecemlineatus), retinal sections and wholemounts were incubated with an antiserum directed against TH and then processed using the avidin-biotin immunohistochemical method. TH-like immunoreactivity was exhibited by amacrine and interplexiform-like cells in the innermost portion of the inner nuclear layer (INL) and by cells we presume to be displaced amacrines in the ganglion cell layer (GCL). Their somata were 12 to 20 microns in diameter, with the majority measuring approximately 18 microns. In transverse sections the processes of the three types of neurons were seen to extend into lamina 1 of the inner plexiform layer (IPL). In horizontal sections 2-3 primary dendrites were seen to ramify and the branches extended for considerable distances, with overlap between the dendritic fields of neighboring TH cells. A distance to the nearest neighbor analysis suggests the TH-neurons in the INL are distributed in a non-random fashion

The retinal distribution of ganglion cells with crossed and uncrossed projections in the South American opossum, Didelphis marsupialis, was revealed by delivering HRP to one optic tract or to retinal targets of one hemisphere. The cells with uncrossed projections are restricted to the temporal retina, comprising 1/3 of the total retinal area, with a sharp transition at the naso-temporal boundary. Besides being distributed over the nasal 2/3 of the retina, cells with crossed projections are intermingled with those with uncrossed projections over the entire temporal retina. Quantitative analysis about the representation of the horizontal meridian on four specimens revealed that the maximun density of cells with uncrossed projection is on the average located at 3.2 mm (SD = 0.21), i.e. 34.8 deg, temporal to the optic disk, falling to 10% at 2.1 mm (SD = 0.14) or 22.8 deg. On the otherhand, the peak for cells with crossed projections is more nasally placed at 1.8 mm (SD=0.18), i.e. 19.6 deg. Between these two maxima, the site where in the densities of cells with crossed and uncrossed projections are about equal is on the average about 2.7 mm (SD = 0.25) form the optic disk, i.e. 29.3 deg. This estimate supports the hypothesis that the retinal itersection of the vertical meridian lies within the region of split representation of crossed and uncrossed ganglion cells. In addition, it was observed that the opossum's retina has a large contingent of cells with uncrossed projections temporal to an eccentricity of 2.7 mm from the optic disk, where it represents roughly 2/3 of the ganglion cells. These data corroborate the relevance of the opossum as a non-primate model for visual work
