ABSTRACT
This 654-page tome might be the most comprehensive look to date at how various governments - nearly 40 in all - have sought to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic during its first 10 months, from December 2019 to September 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic has been associated with an immense growth in scientific literature, with more than 700,000 scientists publishing well over 300,000 items related to COVID-19 by the summer of 2021. Time and time again, from place to place, the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated that extensive public health expertise from an advisory agency meant relatively little if such counsel was discounted by politicians and public health agencies lacking their own decision-making powers.
