ABSTRACT

When the Ministry of Education and Health was established in Brazil in 1930, the National Department of Public Health became a part of it. The National Department of Public Health was reorganized as a central technical organization and a special section for federally maintained hospitals was set up, the work in the Federal Capital was completely reorganized and health centers were established, thereby extending federal activities and influence throughout the States of Brazil. In 1937 the Department was organized into Divisions of Public Health, Hospital Assistance, Relief to Psychopaths, and Mother and Child Welfare. In order to carry out the work better, Brazil was divided into regions with a Health "Delegacia" in each as a coordinating center of Federal and State activities. In 1941 another reform in the National Health Department brought health activities throughout the country even closer. Today, besides the Oswaldo Cruz Institute, the Department includes two divisions, twelve services and seven Federal "Delegacias." The Divisions are Health Organization and Hospital Organization and the Services are Plague, Yellow Fever, Malaria, Port Sanitation, Viral Statistics, Health Education, Mental Diseases, Cancer, Drug Control, Tuberculosis, Leprosy and Administration. The Division of Health Organization has 5 sections; Health Administration, Communicable Diseases, Sanitary Engineering, ...(AU)

ABSTRACT

Not much has been done in the study of diet and climate in Brazil. It is a fact, however, that basal metabolism in warm climates is much lower than in cold or temperate zones, about 24 per cent lower according to the Aub-Du-Bois standard. Various Brazilian students took up since 1928 the work of Eijkman and found figures of more than 10 per cent lower than abroad

Castro recommends for an adult doing moderate work a minimum of 2,800 calories and up to 2,900 for those living in central and sourthern Brazil. Couto and Silva recommend 2,500-2,600 calories for the northern part and 3,00 for the southern part of the country, while Andrade before had given 2,946 and 3,070, respectively. A special committee of the Brazilian Army allowed 3,500 for the north and 3,50-3,800 for the south. Using Holt's data as a basis, J.B. Barreto arrived at 2,530 calories for children averaging 12 years

As to proteins, 1 gram per kilogram of body weight is recommended for tropical regions in Brazil. Fat requirements, as given by Andrade, are 50 and 70 grams and 75 and 90 for proteins for the north and south, while Castro recommended 40 grams of fats to 100-110 grams of proteins. J.B. Barreto advised 60 grams of fats to 65 grams of proteins for the tropical sections of the country

In a study of food values of 400 native products, a high rate of protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron, manganese, vitamin A, thiamine, ...(AU)
