ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate histologically the healing response and degradation of a resorbable gelatin sponge implanted subcutaneously in rats. Fourteen Rattus norvegicus albinos were used, in wich skin pouches were created, bilaterally, on its back region. The experimental side was grafted with a gelatin sponge and the control side was sham-operated. Outcomes obtained via optical microscopy after 1, 3, 7, 10, 12, 14 and 21 days were reported. It was observed a progressive remodeling of the collagen sponge, decrease of the inflammatory infiltrate and integration of the sponge with the surrounding tissues after 14 days in the experimental side, suggesting microscopic biocompatibility. It was concluded that the tested material shows adequate soft tissue response and might possess clinical applicability in human beings
