ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Physical exercise is a well-established strategy to control blood pressure. Nonetheless, its effects on protein homeostasis in individuals with hypertension are not clearly defined. AIMS: Evaluate proteostasis, quality of life, and inflammation, oxidative stress, and vasoactive biomarkers in adults with hypertension regarding reported exercise habits. METHODS: Twenty individuals were recruited in a health-care centre, 10 regular exercisers (age: 68.3 ± 4.2 years) and 10 age-matched individuals without regular exercise participation (age: 67.7 ± 5.1 years). Proteostasis and the levels of ubiquitin, heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70), endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), matrix metalloproteinases 2 (MMP-2), tissue inhibitor of MMP-2 (TIMP-2), connexin 43 (Cx43) and extracellular superoxide dismutase-3 (SOD-3) were assessed in plasma using immunoblotting techniques (western blot or slot blot) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Quality of life was assessed using the Short Form 36 (SF-36) version 2.0 questionnaire. RESULTS: Significant higher levels of interleukin (IL)-6 (P = 0.014), eNOS (P = 0.011), Cx43 (P = 0.020), TIMP-2 (P = 0.038), and SOD-3 (P = 0.001), with a fold increase of 1.5, 1.2, 2.1, 1.3, and 1.2, respectively, were found in the exercise group. The overall quality of life (60.1 ± 4.3 vs. 53.2 ± 5.9, P = 0.009), as well as mental health domain (59.4 ± 7.9 vs. 50.7 ± 7.2, P = 0.024) were significantly higher in the exercise group. Multivariate analysis by FTIR showed that the age-matched group is characterized by peaks related with antiparallel ß-sheet, whereas exercise group is characterized by peaks related to random coils, ß-sheet, and α-helix. CONCLUSIONS: Individuals with regular exercise participation showed better proteostasis, quality of life, inflammatory profile, antioxidant defenses, and eNOS levels.

ABSTRACT

The growing demand for sustainable and off-grid energy storage is reviving the attempts to use Li metal as the anode in the next generation of batteries. However, the use of Li anodes is hampered due to the growth of Li dendrites upon charging and discharging, which compromises the life and safety of the battery. Here, it is shown that lithiated multiwall carbon nanotubes (Li-MWCNTs) act as a controlled Li diffusion interface that suppresses the growth of Li dendrites by regulating the Li+ ion flux during charge/discharge cycling at current densities between 2 and 4 mA cm-2 . A full Li-S cell is fabricated to showcase the versatility of the protected Li anode with the Li-MWCNT interface, where the full cells could support pulse discharges at high currents and over 450 cycles at different rates with coulombic efficiencies close to 99.9%. This work indicates that carbon materials in lithiated forms can be an effective and simple approach to the stabilization of Li metal anodes.

ABSTRACT

Laser-induced graphene (LIG), a graphene structure synthesized by a one-step process through laser treatment of commercial polyimide (PI) film in an ambient atmosphere, has been shown to be a versatile material in applications ranging from energy storage to water treatment. However, the process as developed produces only a 2D product on the PI substrate. Here, a 3D LIG foam printing process is developed on the basis of laminated object manufacturing, a widely used additive-manufacturing technique. A subtractive laser-milling process to yield further refinements to the 3D structures is also developed and shown here. By combining both techniques, various 3D graphene objects are printed. The LIG foams show good electrical conductivity and mechanical strength, as well as viability in various energy storage and flexible electronic sensor applications.

ABSTRACT

The drive for significant advancement in battery capacity and energy density inspired a revisit to the use of Li metal anodes. We report the use of a seamless graphene-carbon nanotube (GCNT) electrode to reversibly store Li metal with complete dendrite formation suppression. The GCNT-Li capacity of 3351 mAh g-1GCNT-Li approaches that of bare Li metal (3861 mAh g-1Li), indicating the low contributing mass of GCNT, while yielding a practical areal capacity up to 4 mAh cm-2 and cycle stability. A full battery based on GCNT-Li/sulfurized carbon (SC) is demonstrated with high energy density (752 Wh kg-1 total electrodes, where total electrodes = GCNT-Li + SC + binder), high areal capacity (2 mAh cm-2), and cyclability (80% retention at >500 cycles) and is free of Li polysulfides and dendrites that would cause severe capacity fade.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Immune response against vaccine antigens may be impaired in children with cancer. The aim of this study was to evaluate the seroconversion response against hepatitis B vaccination (HBV) at the time of chemotherapy onset and/or remission in children with cancer. PATIENTS AND METHOD: Prospective, two-centre, controlled, non-randomised study conducted on children recently diagnosed with cancer, paired with healthy subjects. Cases received HBV at time 0, 1 and 6 months with DNA recombinant HBV at a dose of 20 and 40 µg if < or > than 10 years of age, respectively, at the time of diagnosis for solids tumours and after the remission in case of haematological tumours. Controls received the same schedule, but at of 10 and 20 µg doses, respectively. HBs antibodies were measured in serum samples obtained at 2, 8 and 12 months post-vaccination. Protective titres were defined as > 10 mIU/ml at 8th month of follow up. RESULTS: A total of 78 children with cancer and 25 healthy controls were analysed at month 8th of follow up. Seroconversion rates in the cancer group reached 26.9%, with no differences by age, gender or type of tumour (P = .13, .29, and .44, respectively). Control group seroconversion was 100% at the 8th month, with P < .0001 compared with the cancer group. At month 12 of follow up, just 31.9% of children with cancer achieved anti-HBs antibodies > 10 mIU/ml. CONCLUSIONS: Vaccination against hepatitis B with three doses of DNA recombinant vaccine at an increased concentration, administrated at the time of onset of chemotherapy and/or remission provided an insufficient immune response in a majority of children with cancer. More immunogenic vaccines should be evaluated in this special population, such as a third generation, with more immunogenic adjuvants, enhanced schedules at 0, 1, 2, 6 month, evaluation of antibody titres at month 8 and 12h to evaluate the need for further booster doses.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

There is a special interest in having pharmaceutical active ingredients in the amorphous state due to their increased solubility and therefore, higher bioavailability. Nevertheless, not all of them present stable amorphous phases. In particular, paracetamol is an active ingredient widely known for its instability when prepared in the amorphous state. In the present work thermally stable amorphous binary paracetamol based systems were obtained showing stability on a wide range of temperatures: below its glass transition temperature (Tg) as amorphous solids in the glassy state and above their glass transition temperature, where these materials exist as stable supercooled liquids. To achieve stabilization of the binary paracetamol based system several strategies were applied and optimized, being the selection of the container material a key and novel approach to control the mechanical stress during cooling, eliminating cracks which act as nucleation centers leading to crystallization.

ABSTRACT

The advances in cancer therapies bring a progressive increase in survival of cancer among children, which implies the need for a more holistic approach of care for these patients. In Chile there are no formal reports about the psychosocial effects of childhood cancer survivors. To identify the psychosocial impact and quality of life, a literature review was done using databases: PubMed, Proquest Nursing Journals, EBM Reviews, Scielo and CINAHL. The search limits included: full texts of the last five years in English and Spanish. Ninety-one articles were found and 22 of them were selected using the criteria of having a quantitative or qualitative design. The results demostrate that the psychosocial impact is manifested mainly by low self-esteem and uncertainty toward the future, and problems of social relationships in areas such as employment, financial independence, academic performance and marriage, and relating to peers, which were related to low perceived quality of life. Also, greater acceptance of limitations, adaptability to negative situations and psychological maturity were identified. The experience of living with cancer produces multiple psychological effects in the lives of surviving children. In Chile, it is essential that the nurses in charge of child oncology care, management make a follow up of pediatric patients, beginning from the time of diagnosis, promoting self-care, and thereby improving quality of life.

ABSTRACT
