ABSTRACT

Using event-driven computer simulations, we test a predictive resource allocation scheme for broadband wireless communications systems based on the Kalman Filter. We implemented the filter in six different scheduling algorithms and selected the best performing of them (EXP Rule and FLS) for a detailed analysis. We considered several simulation scenarios with velocities ranging from 0 to 350 km/h representing pedestrian, vehicular and high-speed train scenarios. We also considered different traffic profiles by changing the number of mobile devices between 10 and 250. Our simulations showed improvement in throughput, spectral efficiency, and a decrease in packet loss rates for two schedulers: the EXP Rule and the Frame Level Scheduler. Our predictor can be applied to any wireless system that performs centralized resource allocation based on data rate or any other quantity that needs to be estimated for resource distribution in a network.

ABSTRACT

Automatic License Plate Recognition has been a recurrent research topic due to the increasing number of cameras available in cities, where most of them, if not all, are connected to the Internet. The video traffic generated by the cameras can be analyzed to provide useful insights for the transportation segment. This paper presents the development of an intelligent vehicle identification system based on optical character recognition (OCR) method to be used on intelligent transportation systems. The proposed system makes use of an intelligent parking system named Smart Parking Service (SPANS), which is used to manage public or private spaces. Using computer vision techniques, the SPANS system is used to detect if the parking slots are available or not. The proposed system makes use of SPANS framework to capture images of the parking spaces and identifies the license plate number of the vehicles that are moving around the parking as well as parked in the parking slots. The recognition of the license plate is made in real-time, and the performance of the proposed system is evaluated in real-time.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze the association between participation and physical activity during Physical Education classes with health outcomes in Brazilian students. Methods: 681 Brazilian students (50.5% female) aged 10 to 17 years participated in this cross-sectional study. Independent variables analyzed were participation and physical activity during Physical Education classes, both assessed using a self-report questionnaire. The outcomes were: cardiorespiratory fitness (20-meter Shuttle Run test), muscle strength (Push-up test), overweight and obesity (body mass index) and high blood pressure. Statistical analysis was conducted by Poisson regression to estimate the prevalence ratio (PR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) adjusted for confounding variables (age, sex, parental education, physical activity and sedentary behavior), considering the complex sample design. Results: Participation in Physical Education classes was not associated with any of the studied variables. Being active during Physical Education classes was associated with achieving health related criteria for cardiorespiratory fitness (PR=1.34, 95%CI 1.16-1.55) and muscle strength (PR=1.36, 95%CI 1.09-1.71). The same did not occur for overweight (PR=1.04, 95%CI 0.95-1.14), obesity (PR=1.02, 95%CI 0.91-1.05), or high blood pressure (PR=0.98, 95%CI 0.90-1.06). Conclusions: Students who reported being active during classes presented a higher likelihood to achieve the health criteria for cardiorespiratory fitness and muscle strength. However, classes traditionally offered in Brazil do not protect students from overweight, obesity, or high blood pressure.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study was aimed at analysing the association between socioeconomic indicators and adolescents' physical activity and health-related fitness. METHODS: The study involved 716 adolescents from both genders whose age ranged from 10 to 18 years-old (46.8% male) who answered a questionnaire for estimating their habitual physical activity, socioeconomic status; two health-related physical fitness tests were also performed. The socioeconomic indicators analysed concerned their parents' educational level and the number of bathrooms, TVs, cars, housemaids, refrigerators and freezers in their homes. RESULTS: A positive association was found between paternal education (PR=1.61 (range 1.27-2.10) and 1.41 (1.10-1.83)) and housemaids (PR=1.97 (1.04-3.81) and 1.92 (1.05-3.52)) with recommended physical activity and leisure time physical activity, respectively. The number of cars (PR=1.48: 1.02-2.19) and freezers (PR=1.88: 1.12-3.18) was positively associated with leisure time physical activity and the number of TVs negatively so (PR=0.75: 0.63-0.89). The number of TVs (PR=0.80: 0.67-0.96) and cars (PR=0.70: 0.55-0.89) was negatively associated with cardiorespiratory fitness whilst paternal education (PR=1.17: 1.00-1.37) and the number of bathrooms in the home (PR=1.25: 1.02-1.54) were positively associated with muscular strength. CONCLUSION: Physical activity and health-related physical fitness were associated with socioeconomic status. However, such association depended on the socioeconomic indicator being analysed. Caution should be taken when analysing studies which use different socioeconomic indicators.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to describe the semantic and conceptual equivalences of the National College Health Assessment II (NCHA II). The original version of the NCHA II was translated into Portuguese and back-translated into English. A committee of experts analyzed the different versions of the questionnaire. The version of the translated NCHA II questionnaire was experimentally administered to a sample of 64 university students of both sexes. After minor changes identified in the translation process, the committee of experts concluded that the Portuguese version of the NCHA II showed semantic and conceptual equivalences. In conclusion, the initial stages of the process of cross-cultural adaptation of the NCHA II questionnaire were satisfactory. Future studies are necessary to identify psychometric properties and validation indicators prior to the effective recommendation of the instrument for safe use.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Hantavirosis is an emerging disease widely spread over the world. It is acquired specially by inhalation of aerosols produced from secretion and excreta of infected wild rodents. It affects mostly individuals that have contact with such animals, especially in rural areas. Two distinct forms of the disease have been reported among humans, namely: hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in Asia and Europe, and cardiopulmonary syndrome in the Americas. This case report is relevant because of both the disease complexity and the importance of early diagnosis to treat this severe infection that has high lethality rates.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: The effects of glargine insulin therapy in pregnancies are not well established. We compared maternal and neonatal outcomes of women with pregestational and gestational diabetes treated with glargine or NPH insulin. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted analyzing outcomes from 56 women with pregestational and 82 with gestational diabetes treated with either insulin regimen. RESULTS: Comparisons were performed among 138 women: 56 with pregestational and 82 with gestational diabetes. In relation to maternal complications, worsening of retinopathy and nephropathy, preeclampsia, micro and macroalbuminuria, and all kinds of hypoglycemia were found higher in women with pregestational diabetes NPH-treated vs. glargine-treated. In women with gestational diabetes NPH-treated, it was observed increased incidence of prepregnancy and new-onset pregnancy hypertension, micro and macroalbuminuria, as well as mild and frequent hypoglycemia, compared to glargine-treated. Among the neonatal outcomes, 1-min Apgar score <7, necessity of intensive care unit and fetal death in pregestational, while jaundice and congenital malformations in gestational diabetes, respectively, were more frequently observed in infants born to NPH-treated, compared to glargine-treated. CONCLUSIONS: Glargine use during pregnancy from preconception through delivery, showed to be safe since it is associated with decreased maternal and neonatal adverse outcomes compared with NPH insulin-treated patients.
