ABSTRACT

ObjectiveTo investigate the epidemic characteristics and influencing factors of acute conjunctivitis caused by human adenovirus(HAdv)in Yantian District of Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province from 2014 to 2022, and to provide evidence for formulating effective prevention and control measures. MethodsDescriptive epidemiology was used to analyze the epidemiological characteristics of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis (AHC) cases reported from the Chinese disease prevention and control information system. Etiological characteristics of laboratory-confirmed cases were analyzed, and a case-control study method of test-negative design (TND) was conducted as well. According to the result of HAdv detection, analysis was used to identify the influencing factors of morbidity. ResultsA total of 1 005 AHC cases were reported in Yantian District, Shenzhen City from 2014 to 2022, with an average annual incidence rate of 49.49/105. The incidence rate ranged from 4.67/105 to 117.28/105. The peak incidence occurred from July to October each year, with a male-to-female ratio of 1.42∶1. The median (P25,P75) age of onset was 29(12,40) years. A total of 716 eye swabs were collected for etiological detection from 2014 to 2022. HAdv positive detection rate was 36.45% (263/716), Cox 24v positive detection rate was 0.28% (2/716), while EV70 was not detected. The longest viral shedding time in eye swabs was 10 days, with a median of 2 days. The highest HAdv positive detection rate (47.47%) was observed when the sampling-to-onset interval was 4‒5 days, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05), with a trend of first increasing and then decreasing. Multivariate logistic regressing analysis showed that aged 18‒ years, and average temperature higher than 24.90 ℃ 3 days before onset (P<0.05) were the risk factors for acute HAdv conjunctivitis. ConclusionAHC in Yantian District, Shenzhen City showed a low level of prevalence from 2014 to 2022, with HAdv being the predominant pathogen. The peak period of viral shedding occurred on the 4th to 5th day after symptom onset, suggesting the importance of adherence to strict home isolation for infected persons. Aged18‒ years and average temperature increased 3 days before onset are associated with an increased risk of adenoviral conjunctivitis. It is recommended to strengthen personal protection and keep doing a good job of AHC surveillance and early warning, so as to timely prevent the outbreaks of AHC.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, we formulate a special epidemic dynamic model to describe the transmission of COVID-19 in Algeria. We derive the threshold parameter control reproduction number [Formula], and present the effective control reproduction number (Rc(t)) as a real-time index for evaluating the epidemic under different control strategies. Due to the limitation of the reported data, we redefine the number of accumulative confirmed cases with diagnostic shadow and then use the processed data to do the optimal numerical simulations. According to the control measures, we divide the whole research period into six stages. And then the corresponding medical resource estimations and the average effective control reproduction numbers for each stage are given. Meanwhile, we use the parameter values which are obtained from the optimal numerical simulations to forecast the whole epidemic tendency under different control strategies.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore whether inhibiting autophagy can enhance the sensitivity of photothermal treatment under mild photothermal conditions. Methods CQ@PLGA@PDA NPs were prepared by an improved double emulsification method and a PDA-based surface modification method. After basic characterization, CCK-8 method was used to detect the cytotoxicity of nanoparticles; the near-infrared laser irradiation nanoparticle solution was used to detect the heating effect; CCK-8 method and live-dead cell staining were used to detect the killing effect of tumor cells; Western blot was used to detect the expression of autophagy-related proteins. Results The CQ@PLGA@PDA NPs were successfully prepared, with a particle size of 253.10±2.39 nm, a zeta potential of -22.57±0.80 mV, uniform particle size and good dispersion. The temperature of nanoparticle solution increased to 45℃ after the near-infrared laser irradiation for 10 min. CQ@PLGA@PDA NPs had no obvious toxicity to cells. The survival rates of breast cancer cell MDA-MB-231 and mouse embryonic fibroblast NIH-3T3 cell were above 95%. The inhibition of autophagy under mild photothermal conditions could improve the sensitivity of photothermal therapy. Conclusion The prepared CQ@PLGA@PDA NPs have good photothermal performance and high biological safety; by inhibiting autophagy, they can effectively kill tumor cells under mild photothermal conditions(< 50℃).

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus is considered to be triggered by aberrant neural activity in the brain. Sound therapy is regarded as a reasonable management option for tinnitus treatment and has been applied in the clinical setting for decades. HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that sound therapy, a commonly used tinnitus treatment method, would alter the functional connectivity (FC) of brain regions in tinnitus models. STUDY TYPE: Longitudinal. POPULATION: Resting-state functional MRI data were collected from 27 tinnitus patients before and after 12 weeks of sound therapy. Twenty-seven age- and sex-matched healthy controls were also longitudinally scanned at the 12-week timepoint. FIELD STRENGTH: 3.0T MRI system and echo planar imaging (EPI) sequence, 3D brain volume imaging (BRAVO) sequence. ASSESSMENT: Functional connectivity strength (FCS), a graph-theoretical-based analytic method, was applied to analyze the FC features in the whole brain. STATISTICAL TESTS: Student's t-test and chi-square test were used for analyses between two groups. A two-way analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) followed by post-hoc analyses was performed to determine differences of FC. RESULTS: The interaction effect between the two groups and two scans on FCS was observed in the bilateral thalami and left anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). The fitted FCS values in the bilateral thalami were significantly higher in tinnitus patients at baseline and decreased to a relatively normal range after sound therapy compared with healthy controls. Conversely, the fitted FCS values in the left ACC were within the normal range, but increased after treatment (1.08 ± 0.29, P < 0.02); however, there was no change in the control group. Importantly, significant correlations were observed between the FCS changes in the right thalamus (P = 0.028), the FC of the right thalamus-right inferior frontal gyrus (P = 0.015), and symptomatic improvement. DATA CONCLUSION: Sound therapy may modulate the brain network by altering the gating function of the thalamus as well as enhancing the tinnitus-canceling system. ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: There have been recent efforts to characterize brain functional activity features in patients with pulsatile tinnitus (PT). These efforts have revealed evidence of aberrant functional connectivity (FC) of the right middle temporal gyrus (MTG) in PT patients with prolonged disease duration. PURPOSE: To assess the possible predictive effect of aberrant FC of MTG in PT patients with prolonged disease duration. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective. POPULATION: Thirty-four patients with recent-onset PT (RPTIN), 24 patients with long-term PT (LPTIN), and 35 age-, gender-, and education-matched healthy controls were enrolled. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: 3.0T MRI system and echo-planar imaging (EPI) sequence, 3D brain volume imaging (BRAVO) sequence. ASSESSMENT: Functional MRI data preprocessing was performed in Data Processing & Analysis for Brain Imaging (DPABI) and Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM) 8. The FC analyses were conducted using the software REST. STATISTICAL TESTS: One-way analysis of covariance was conducted between three groups with age and gender as covariates, and post-hoc analysis was used to identify the sources of group effects. Pearson's correlation analysis was conducted for the z-values of altered FC strength in the PT group and the clinical data. RESULTS: Among hubs belonging to the executive control network, the default mode network (DMN), and limbic network, the strength of FC was mainly decreased in the patient groups compared with normal controls (P < 0.05). Relative to RPTIN patients and normal controls, LPTIN patients were further characterized by significantly decreased FC between several short-range brain regions adjacent to the seed (P < 0.05). Finally, disease duration was negatively correlated with decreased FC between the seed and right fusiform gyrus/parahippocampal gyrus, right inferior frontal gyrus, and right MTG (a brain area adjacent to the seed region). DATA CONCLUSION: Long-term reactions to PT mainly involved weakened short-range FC, especially within a functional network in the right temporal lobe.
