ABSTRACT

Abstract Wildlife roadkill surveys in Brazil often focus on birds, as they are one of the main groups affected by road accidents. In addition roadkill, anthropogenic litter also contributes to a significant number of bird fatalities every year. The present study aimed to investigate the stomach contents and possible contamination by inorganic material of birds killed on a federal highway that crosses the Serra de Itabaiana National Park in the state of Sergipe, Brazil. Monitoring and data collection were carried out from January to June 2022, with a motorcycle at an average speed of 60 km/h. The collected animals were transported to the Institute of Technology and Research, located at the Tiradentes University, Sergipe, Brazil, and a plastic material was identified. The plastic material found was subjected to Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), which showed a similar wavenumber to a polymer in the polypropylene chain, very common in plastic packaging. The presence of plastics and metals in the intestinal contents of Caracara plancus and Crotophaga ani is noteworthy, as they have a greater tendency to ingest plastics due to their generalist diet. Plastic contamination in Progne chalybea and Nyctidromus albicollis probably occurred through bioaccumulation, from the consumption of insects contaminated by microplastics.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Objective: To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of multi-echo Dixon magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in hepatic fat quantification, in comparison with that of magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), on 3.0-T MRI. Materials and Methods: Fifty-five adults with no known liver disease underwent MRI in a 3.0-T scanner for determination of the hepatic fat fraction, with two techniques: multi-echo Dixon, in a manually drawn region of interest (ROI) and in the entire liver parenchyma (automated segmentation); and MRS. The diagnostic accuracy and cutoff value for multi-echo Dixon were determined, with MRS being used as the reference standard. Results: The mean fat fraction obtained by multi-echo Dixon in the manually drawn ROI and in the entire liver was 5.2 ± 5.8% and 6.6 ± 5.2%, respectively, whereas the mean hepatic fat fraction obtained by MRS was 5.7 ± 6.4%. A very strong positive correlation and good agreement were observed between MRS and multi-echo Dixon, for the ROI (r = 0.988, r2 = 0.978, p < 0.001) and for the entire liver parenchyma (r = 0.960, r2 = 0.922, p < 0.001). A moderate positive correlation was observed between the hepatic fat fraction and body mass index of the participants, regardless of the fat estimation technique employed. Conclusion: For hepatic fat quantification, multi-echo Dixon MRI demonstrated a very strong positive correlation and good agreement with MRS (often considered the gold-standard noninvasive technique). Because multi-echo Dixon MRI is more readily available than is MRS, it can be used as a rapid tool for hepatic fat quantification, especially when the hepatic fat distribution is not homogeneous.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Background: Early trauma predicts poor psychological and physical health. Glutamatergic synaptic processes offer one avenue for understanding this relationship, given glutamate's abundance and involvement in reward and stress sensitivity, emotion, and learning. Trauma-induced glutamatergic excitotoxicity may alter neuroplasticity and approach/avoidance tendencies, increasing risk for psychiatric disorders. Studies examine upstream or downstream effects instead of glutamatergic synaptic processes in vivo, limiting understanding of how trauma affects the brain. Objective: In a pilot study using a previously published data set, we examine associations between early trauma and a proposed measure of synaptic strength in vivo in one of the largest human samples to undergo Carbon-13 (13C MRS) magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Participants were 18 healthy controls and 16 patients with PTSD (male and female).Method: Energy per cycle (EPC), which represents the ratio of neuronal oxidative energy production to glutamate neurotransmitter cycling, was generated as a putative measure of glutamatergic synaptic strength. Results: Results revealed that early trauma was positively correlated with EPC in individuals with PTSD, but not in healthy controls. Increased synaptic strength was associated with reduced behavioural inhibition, and EPC showed stronger associations between reward responsivity and early trauma for those with higher EPC.Conclusion: In the largest known human sample to undergo 13C MRS, we show that early trauma is positively correlated with EPC, a direct measure of synaptic strength. Our study findings have implications for pharmacological treatments thought to impact synaptic plasticity, such as ketamine and psilocybin.

Abnormalities in the strength of synaptic connections have been implicated in trauma and trauma-related disorders but not directly examined. We used magnetic resonance spectroscopy to investigate the association between early trauma and an in vivo measure of synaptic strength. For people with posttraumatic stress disorder, as early trauma severity increased, synaptic strength increased, highlighting the potential for treatments thought to change synaptic connections in trauma-related disorders.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Fiber-reinforced prefabricated intraarticular posts have gained popularity due to several favorable characteristics for clinical use compared to metallic intraradicular posts. Aim: To evaluate the light transmission capacity of two types of fiber posts, using two different methods. Materials and Method: The posts were divided into two groups: experimental group - quartz-glass fiber posts (n=10) and control group - glass fiber posts (n=10). The light transmittance of the samples was compared by means of light intensity test by photographs and ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer. This test was analyzed by thirds: coronal, middle, and apical. The spectophotometer tested the luminous transmittance along the length of the post. The statistical analysis was conducted with a significance level of 0.05. Results: Light transmission was 97% on the coronal third, 68% in the middle third, and 27.66% in the apical third in the posts of the experimental group. In the posts of the control group, the light transmission was 95.33% in the coronal third, 80.66% in the middle third, and 41.33% in the apical third. Light transmission was significantly higher in the middle third of the posts of the experimental group when compared to the control group (p<0.05). The luminous transmittance of the posts of the experimental group was 97.4% with wavelengths of 400 nm, 97% at 450 and 500 nm, and 96.9% at 550 nm. In the posts of the control group, the luminous transmittance was 72.3% with wavelengths of 400 nm, 68.6% at 450 nm; 64.6% at 500 nm and 61.5% at 550 nm. The posts of the experimental group demonstrated significantly higher light transmittance than the control group (p<0.001). Conclusion: the luminous transmittance of quartz-glass fiber posts is higher than glass fiber posts.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Cardiovascular risk (CVR) is conventionally calculated by measuring the total cholesterol content of high-density lipoproteins (HDL) and low-density lipoproteins (LDL). The purpose of this systematic review was to assess the CVR associated with LDL and HDL particle size and number as determined by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Material and methods: A literature search was performed using the electronic databases MEDLINE and Scopus. All cohort and case–control studies published before January 1, 2019 that met the following inclusion criteria were included: HDL-P, LDL-P, HDL-Z and/or LDL-Z measured by NMR spectroscopy; cardiovascular event as an outcome variable; risk of cardiovascular events expressed as odds ratios or hazard ratios; only adult patients. A meta-analysis was performed for each exposure variable (4 for LDL and 5 for HDL) and for each exposure measure (highest versus lowest quartile and 1-standard deviation increment). Results: This review included 24 studies. Number of LDL particles was directly associated with CVR: risk increased by 28% with each standard deviation increment. LDL particle size was inversely and significantly associated with CVR: each standard deviation increment corresponded to an 8% risk reduction. CVR increased by 12% with each standard deviation increase in number of small LDL particles. HD, particle number and size were inversely associated with CVR. Conclusion: Larger particle size provided greater protection, although this relationship was inconsistent between studies. Larger number of LDL particles and smaller LDL particle size are associated with increased CVR. Risk decreases with increasing number and size of HDL particles.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Monitoring soil moisture content is especially important as it provides relevant information for making informed decisions regarding irrigation, fertigation, and water stress management. This study aims to validate a model for estimating soil water content using diffuse reflectance spectroscopy in the near-infrared range. The evaluated soils come from the municipalities of Puerto Gaitán (Meta), Espinal (Tolima), and Mosquera (Cundinamarca). In the first two municipalities, rigid networks were established to select sampling points, with two depths considered for each case (0-10 and 10-30 cm; 0-10 and 10-25 cm, respectively). For the third municipality, 77 soil pits were described, and samples were taken at depths of 0-10 and 10-35 cm. Subsequently, moisture content was evaluated at 0, 15, and 30 % moisture levels. The obtained data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Cross-validation and external validation were applied to each model, and a general model was developed based on the data from all three sites. The obtained models for each sampling site and the general model demonstrated good predictive capacity. Based on the results, it is affirmed that near-infrared diffuse reflectance spectroscopy is an excellent option for determining soil water content. Similarly, principal component analysis identified differentiation between water contents of the studied soils.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Quantum Wells are the basis for a great variety of electronic devices such as leds, lasers, photodetectors and modulators. Their optoelectronic properties depend on their chemical composition and the thickness of each layer. Therefore, a precise control during their growth is needed. This work has the objective of presenting the epitaxial growth of coupled and uncoupled asymmetric AlGaAs/GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells and their characterization using optical techniques such as reflectance anisotropy spectroscopy (RAS) and photoluminescence (PL). An experimental study of the different interactions between the confined levels of energy in coupled quantum wells was carried on. This kind of structures is of special interest because they allow the formation and observation not only of direct excitons and trions inside a single quantum well, but of indirect excitons and trions, which are only formed by electrons of one quantum well and holes of the neighbor quantum well (IntraQW transitions). Three intrinsic quantum wells based on gallium arsenide (GaAs) were grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), one single QW and a pair of coupled asymmetric QWs. The effect of breaking symmetry (from de D2d a C2v) on the spintronic properties of the structure was observed by RAS and PL measurements at ~ 30 K. The main techniques and methods for the growth of intrinsic quantum wells were established, which are the basis for the creation of devices with more complex structures. The use of spectroscopic techniques for the study of quantum wells allowed the demonstration of the presence of optical anisotropies that influence the behavior of exciton's spins at quantum wells.

ABSTRACT

This study evaluated selected structural and physical properties, such as degree of conversion (DC), Vickers hardness (VHN), and compression strength (CS), of three new dual-cure bulk-fill resin-based composites (RBCs; ACTIVA, HyperFIL, and Fill-Up) and compared them to those of a conventional RBC (Filtek Z250) at three clinically relevant depths. Samples (n=180) were prepared in three depths (2,4, and 6mm). Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis and VHN and CS tests were performed. The DC value was calculated by considering the relative change in the aliphatic C=C peaks. The fractured surfaces of representative samples were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Data were statistically evaluated using two-way analysis of variance and post hoc Bonferroni tests (p<0.05). According to the VHN results, Filtek Z250 showed the highest bottom/top hardness ratio (97.94±1.01) at 2mm thickness and ACTIVA showed the lowest bottom/top hardness ratio (43.48±5.64) at 6mm thickness (p<0.001). According to the FTIR results, the DC decreased with increasing thickness in all materials (p<0.05). Filtek Z250 showed the highest (301±12.4 MPa) and ACTIVA exhibited the lowest (232±17.2 MPa) CS values at 2mm thickness (p<0.05). The lowest CS values were obtained for ACTIVA, and the highest values were obtained for Filtek Z250 for samples with thicknesses of 4 and 6mm, respectively (p<0.05). The structural features of restorative composites, such as the resin chemistry and filler type and content, and the operational parameters (i.e., material thickness and curing conditions) strongly affect crosslinking reactions and thus the DC, VHN, and CS values.

All cohort and case-control studies published before January 1, 2019 that met the following inclusion criteria were included: HDL-P, LDL-P, HDL-Z and/or LDL-Z measured by NMR spectroscopy; cardiovascular event as an outcome variable; risk of cardiovascular events expressed as odds ratios or hazard ratios; only adult patients. Risk decreases with increasing number and size of HDL particles.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the properties of suckermouth catfish bone extract, which allows it to be adopted as a raw material for bone graft following its graft in an artificial defect of a rat model. Material and Methods: Hydroxyapatite (HA) from suckermouth catfish bone extract was characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and its toxicity was evaluated by Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT). This material was grafted on artificial defects in rats' femoral bones, which were observed immunologically by Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) after one week and four weeks, and radiographically in the second week, and histologically in the second and fourth weeks. Results: FTIR shows that this material consists of phosphate, hydroxyl, and carbonate groups, while the BSLT results show that this material is not toxic. Observations by ELISA showed an increase in the expression of Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) in defects with HA in the fourth week. Radiographically the defect did not show closure in the second week. In contrast, histological analysis showed a better bone healing process in the defect, which was applied with the HA of the suckermouth catfish bone. Conclusion: The HA extracted from the suckermouth catfish bone has beneficial properties as an alternative to bone graft raw material and, more investigated needed to support this biomaterial to be used in the treatment of bone loss (AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Quantitative assessments of rotator cuff muscle changes after successful tendon repair are scarce. On the other hand, semiquantitative and subjective assessments are more abundant, but their findings are controversial. One hypothesis about this divergence is that there is an immediate decrease in the proportion of fatty infiltration after surgical repair. Objective: Reassess fatty infiltration and muscle trophism of the rotator cuff after ten years of repair. Methods: Prospective comparison study. A total of 10 patients diagnosed with rotator cuff injury underwent repair of the lesion, and MRI of the affected shoulder was performed in the preoperative, immediate postoperative, and late postoperative periods (ten years). A comparative study was performed at every moment. Results: At 5% significance level, the mean of the immediate postoperative period was higher for the variable trophism and true muscle percentage. Fatty infiltration showed no difference in the three periods observed. Conclusion: Fatty infiltration does not change in the three periods evaluated and muscle trophism is greater in the immediate postoperative period. After ten years of rotator cuff repair, muscle trophism and fatty infiltration remain with statistically significantly equal results when compared to the preoperative period. Level of Evidence II, Prospective Comparison Study.

Objetivo: Reavaliar a infiltração gordurosa e o trofismo muscular do manguito rotador passados dez anos do reparo.

ABSTRACT

Irradiation of dentin with the Nd:YAG laser shows promise for the quality of adhesion, as long as it is applied under specific parameters and in defined steps. The objective of this study is to comparatively evaluate the impact of irradiation with Nd:YAG laser on the formation and stability of the hybrid layer in human dentin, pretreated with acid and primer of conventional adhesive system, "in vitro". Seventy healthy molars had their roots and coronal portions horizontally sectioned, until complete exposure of occlusal dentin. The samples were divided into: G1 (control n=20); G2 (experimental n=20), with 10 teeth from each group destined for microshearing (MC) and 10 teeth for scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In the 30 remaining teeth analyzed: texture by Cone Beam Computed Tomography (AT=15); and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR=15) in 3 moments: dentin control; after treatment with acid + primer; and after laser irradiation. Statistically, we opted for 1-way ANOVA, Pearson's Chi Square, T test and Tukey's multiple comparisons with a significance of 5%. FTIR showed a reduction in phosphate and carbonate levels in the primer moments and after laser irradiation, but there was no denaturation of the exposed collagen. The texture analysis evidenced a trend towards the formation of a more expressive tissue after the use of the laser. The CM test showed mean values of 36.5 and 35.2MPa for G1 and G2 respectively (p>0.05) and therefore, immediately, the laser showed no deleterious effects on the adhesive process. In addition, greater penetrability of the adhesive was observed in the SEM evaluation after laser application. New studies with longitudinal evaluation are necessary to verify if the laser effect could have been protected from hydrolytic degradation, since there is a reduction in the local water content during the formation of the hybrid layer (AU).

ABSTRACT

Abstract Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have great potential for application in cell therapy and tissue engineering procedures because of their plasticity and capacity to differentiate into different cell types. Given the widespread use of MSCs, it is necessary to better understand some properties related to osteogenic differentiation, particularly those linked to biomaterials used in tissue engineering. The aim of this study was to develop an analysis method using FT-Raman spectroscopy for the identification and quantification of biochemical components present in conditioned culture media derived from MSCs with or without induction of osteogenic differentiation. All experiments were performed between passages 3 and 5. For this analysis, MSCs were cultured on scaffolds composed of bioresorbable poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) and poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) polymers. MSCs (GIBCO®) were inoculated onto the pure polymers and 75:25 PHBV/PCL blend (dense and porous samples). The plate itself was used as control. The cells were maintained in DMEM (with low glucose) containing GlutaMAX® and 10% FBS at 37oC with 5% CO2 for 21 days. The conditioned culture media were collected and analyzed to probe for functional groups, as well as possible molecular variations associated with cell differentiation and metabolism. The method permitted to identify functional groups of specific molecules in the conditioned medium such as cholesterol, phosphatidylinositol, triglycerides, beta-subunit polypeptides, amide regions and hydrogen bonds of proteins, in addition to DNA expression. In the present study, FT-Raman spectroscopy exhibited limited resolution since different molecules can express similar or even the same stretching vibrations, a fact that makes analysis difficult. There were no variations in the readings between the samples studied. In conclusion, FT-Raman spectroscopy did not meet expectations under the conditions studied.
