ABSTRACT

Riverine dissolved organic matter (DOM) is crucial to global carbon cycling and aquatic ecosystems. However, the geographical patterns and environmental drivers of DOM chemodiversity remain elusive especially in the waters and sediments of continental rivers. Here, we systematically analyzed DOM molecular diversity and composition in surface waters and sediments across 97 broadly distributed rivers using data from the Worldwide Hydrobiogeochemistry Observation Network for Dynamic River Systems (WHONDRS) consortium. We further examined the associations of molecular richness and composition with geographical, climatic, physicochemical variables, as well as the watershed characteristics. We found that molecular richness significantly decreased toward higher latitudes, but only in sediments (r = -0.24, p < 0.001). The environmental variables like precipitation and non-purgeable organic carbon showed strong associations with DOM molecular richness and composition. Interestingly, we identified that less-documented factors like watershed characteristics were also related to DOM molecular richness and composition. For instance, DOM molecular richness was positively correlated with the soil sand fraction for waters, while with the percentage of forest for sediments. Importantly, the effects of watershed characteristics on DOM molecular richness and composition were generally stronger in waters than sediments. This phenomenon was further supported by the fact that 11 out of 13 watershed characteristics (e.g., the percentages of impervious area and cropland) showed more positive than negative correlations with molecular abundance especially in waters. As the percentage of forest increased, there was a continuous accumulation of the compounds with higher molecular weight, aromaticity, and degree of unsaturation. In contrast, human activities accumulated the compounds with lower molecular weight and oxygenation, and higher bioavailability. Our findings imply that it may be possible to use a small set of broadly available data types to predict DOM molecular richness and composition across diverse river systems. Elucidation of mechanisms underlying these relationships will provide further enhancements to such predictions, especially when extrapolating to unsampled systems.

ABSTRACT

Unsafe abortion refers to induced abortions performed without trained medical assistance. While previous studies have investigated predictors of unsafe abortion in India, none have addressed these factors with accounting sample selection bias. This study aims to evaluate the contributors to unsafe abortion in India by using the latest National Family Health Survey data conducted during 2019-2021, incorporating the adjustment of sample selection bias. The study included women aged 15 to 49 who had terminated their most recent pregnancy within five years prior to the survey (total weighted sample (N) = 4,810). Descriptive and bivariate statistics and the Heckman Probit model were employed. The prevalence of unsafe abortion in India was 31%. Key predictors of unsafe abortion included women's age, the gender composition of their living children, gestation stage, family planning status, and geographical region. Unsafe abortions were typically performed in the early stages of gestation, often involving self-administered medication. The primary reasons cited were unintended pregnancies and health complications. This study underscores the urgent need for targeted interventions that take into account regional, demographic, and social dynamics influencing abortion practices in India.

ABSTRACT

PM2.5 is the main component of haze, and PM2.5-bound heavy metals (PBHMs) can induce various toxic effects via inhalation. However, comprehensive macroanalyses on large scales are still lacking. In this study, we compiled a substantial dataset consisting of the concentrations of eight PBHMs, including As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn, across different cities in China. To improve prediction accuracy, we enhanced the traditional land-use regression (LUR) model by incorporating emission source-related variables and employing the best-fitted machine-learning algorithm, which was applied to predict PBHM concentrations, analyze geographical patterns and assess the health risks associated with metals under different PM2.5 control targets. Our model exhibited excellent performance in predicting the concentrations of PBHMs, with predicted values closely matching measured values. Noncarcinogenic risks exist in 99.4% of the estimated regions, and the carcinogenic risks in all studied regions of the country are within an acceptable range (1 × 10-5-1 × 10-6). In densely populated areas such as Henan, Shandong, and Sichuan, it is imperative to control the concentration of PBHMs to reduce the number of patients with cancer. Controlling PM2.5 effectively decreases both carcinogenic and noncarcinogenic health risks associated with PBHMs, but still exceed acceptable risk level, suggesting that other important emission sources should be given attention.

Background:Mesothelioma is a very aggressive tumor that appears after several decades of asbestos exposure. The Minimum Basic Data Set (MBDS) has been validated for the incidence of mesothelioma in Italy, but not in Spain. The objectives of this investigation are: to estimate the prevalence, incidence and mortality of mesothelioma in the Community of Madrid (CM); to evaluate the distribution of this risk within the territory; and to explore validity of the MBDS in the epidemiological surveillance of mesothelioma. Methods:Prevalence, incidence and mortality mesothelioma rates were calculated for the CM from data of the MBDS (2016 and 2017), and mortality data of the Spanish National Statistics Institute (INE) for the same period. The geographical distribution of cases and deaths, and its correlation at municipal level was studied. Statistical analysis with R and Excel tools was carried out.Results:The incidence of mesothelioma in the CM was higher than in previous years. Mortality estimated by the MBDS and calculated using INE data for 2016 were similar in the CM. The correlation between the geographical patterns of risk of mesothelioma obtained from the two sources was high (r = 0.86). The aggregation of cases continues in municipalities in the south, detecting the maximum risk in Aranjuez. Conclusion:The MBDS and INE are good resources for monitoring the risk of mesothelioma. New studies that investigate the aggregation of cases in Aranjuez are required.(AU)


Fundamento: El mesotelioma es un tumor muy agresivo que surge tras varias décadas de exposición al amianto. El Conjunto Mínimo Básico de Datos (CMBD), ha sido validado para conocer la incidencia del mesotelioma en Italia, pero no en España. El objetivo de este trabajo es conocer la prevalencia, incidencia y mortalidad por mesotelioma en la Comunidad de Madrid (CM), evaluar la distribución del riesgo dentro de su territorio y explorar la validez del CMBD en la vigilancia epidemiológica del mesotelioma en España. Material y métodos: Se han utilizado los datos del CMBD de la CM con diagnóstico de mesotelioma y las causas de muerte registradas en el Instituto Nacional de Estadística (INE), durante el periodo 2016-2017. Los cálculos de tasas ajustadas, de distribución geográfica de casos y fallecidos, y de correlación del patrón geográfico a nivel municipal entre ambas fuentes (CMBD eINE), se realizaron mediante los programas R y Excel. Resultados: La incidencia del mesotelioma en la CM fue más alta en 2016 y 2017 que en años precedentes. La mortalidad calculada (INE) y la estimada (CMBD) fueron similares. La correlación entre patrones geográficosde riesgo obtenidos mediante CMBD e INE fue elevada (r = 0.86). La agregación de casos continúa concentrándose en los municipios del sur de la CM, detectándoseel máximo riesgo en Aranjuez. Conclusiones: Tanto el CMBD como el INE representan fuentes adecuadas para monitorizar el riesgo de mesotelioma. Se precisa de nuevos estudios que expliquen laagregación de casos detectada en Aranjuez.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Plant sexual systems play an important role in the evolution of angiosperm diversity. However, large-scale patterns in the frequencies of sexual systems (i.e. dioecy, monoecy, and hermaphroditism) and their drivers for species with different growth forms remain poorly known. Here, using a newly compiled database on the sexual systems and distributions of 19780 angiosperm species in China, we map the large-scale geographical patterns in frequencies of the sexual systems of woody and herbaceous species separately. We use these data to test the following two hypotheses: (1) the prevalence of sexual systems differs between woody and herbaceous assemblies because woody plants have taller canopies and are found in warm and humid climates; (2) the relative contributions of different drivers (specifically climate, evolutionary age, and mature plant height) to these patterns differ between woody and herbaceous species. We show that geographical patterns in proportions of different sexual systems (especially dioecy) differ between woody and herbaceous species. Geographical variations in sexual systems of woody species were influenced by climate, evolutionary age and plant height. In contrast, these have only weakly significant effects on the patterns of sexual systems of herbaceous species. We suggest that differences between species with woody and herbaceous growth forms in terms of biogeographic patterns of sexual systems, and their drivers, may reflect their differences in physiological and ecological adaptions, as well as the coevolution of sexual system with vegetative traits in response to environmental changes.

BACKGROUND: The epidemiology of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is relevant for health-services planning. Most of MS prevalence and incidence studies in Italy referred to specific geographical areas and periods, whereas mortality data are routinely collected at the national level. The aim was to assess MS mortality trend and geographical differences in Italy from 1980 to 2015. METHODS: Mortality data were provided by the Italian Institute of Statistics. Due to a low number of annual deaths, mortality data were analysed for both the entire period under study and for sub-periods. Temporal trends were first evaluated using age-adjusted mortality rates (AMRs) comparing each sub-period with the initial one. Then, the annual percent change in mortality was estimated through the joinpoint regression model. Spatial differences between 5 main geographical areas were evaluated using standardized mortality ratios (SMRs). RESULTS: During the study period, 4,959 deaths for males and 7,434 for females were observed. The higher overall AMR was observed for females (F:0.71 vs. M: 0.56 per 100,000 persons per year). Analysing mortality by gender and geographical area, SMRs 〈 100 were observed in South Italy for both sexes, and in Central Italy for males only, whereas SMRs 〉 100 for Islands for both sexes, and in North-East and North-West for females only. The analysis of the mortality trend through AMRs calculated for sub-periods revealed no difference between the first and the last period for males, whereas a significant increase in mortality was observed for females. The joinpoint regression analysis showed a significant decrease in mortality up to 1995 for males (APC -3.23%) and up to 1999 for females, (APC -1.01%), followed by a significant increase for both sexes, but more marked for females (APC +1.9% M, +2.34% F). CONCLUSION: The increasing trend of mortality for MS, especially for females, may reflect the increase in the prevalence of MS and the improvement in the quality of diagnosis or coding of the cause of death.

Urban lakes play an important role in drainage and water storage, regulating urban microclimate conditions, supplying groundwater, and meeting citizens' recreational needs. However, geographical patterns of algal communities associated with urban lakes from a large scale are still unclear. In the present work, the geographical variation of algal communities and water quality parameters in different urban lakes in China were determined. The water quality parameters were examined in the samples collected from north, central, south, and coastal economic zones in China. The results suggested that significant differences in water quality were observed among different geographical distribution of urban lakes. The highest total phosphorus (TP)(0.21 mg/L) and total nitrogen (TN) (3.84 mg/L) concentrations were found in XinHaiHu (XHH) lake, it also showed highest the nitrate nitrogen (NO3--N) (0.39 mg/L),total organic carbon(TOC) (9.77 mg/L), and COD Mn (9.01 mg/L) concentrations among all samples. Environmental and geographic factors also cause large differences in algal cell concentration in different urban lakes, which ranged from 4,700×104 to 247,800 ×104cell/L. Through light microscopy, 6 phyla were identified, which includes Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyta, Cyanophyta, Dinophyta, Euglenophyta, and Cryptophyta. Meanwhile, the heat map with the total 63 algal community composition at the genus level profile different urban lakes community structures are clearly distinguishable. Further analyses showed that the dominant genera were Limnothrixsp., Synedra sp., Cyclotella sp., Nephrocytium sp., Melosirasp., and Scenedesmussp. among all samples. The integrated network analysis indicated that the highly connected taxa (hub) were Fragilariasp.,Scenedesmus sp., and Stephanodiscus sp. The water quality parameters of NO3--N and NH4+-N had significant impacts on the structural composition of the algal community. Additionally, RDA further revealed distinct algal communities in the different urban lakes, and were influenced by NO2--N, Fe, and algal cell concentrations. In summary, these results demonstrate that the pattern of algal communities are highly correlated with geographic location and water quality on a large scale, and these results also give us further understanding of the complex algal communities and effectively managing eutrophication of urban lakes.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the geographical distribution of physical activity (PA) prevalence among adults aged 15-64 years old across Iran provinces using geographic maps. METHODS: Data from 4 consecutive national surveys conducted between 2007 and 2010 were pooled to determine the geographical distribution. Prevalence of low PA with 95% confidence interval was estimated by sociodemographic subpopulations over provinces using complex survey design. RESULTS: In total, 119,560 participants (49.9% females) were included in the analyses. The mean (SD) age of participants was 39.5 (14.3) years. The prevalence of the low PA in the pooled 2007-2010 was 35.8% (95% confidence interval, 34.1-37.6). The 3 provinces with the highest prevalence of low PA were Sistan and Baluchestan, Yazd, and Hormozgan. The results of hot spot analysis showed that the Kerman province was a hot spot, and Ilam, Kermanshah, Hamedan, and Markazi were cold spots for low PA. Ilam, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad, and Mazandaran had the highest total PA volume (metabolic equivalent minutes per week). Hot spot analysis showed that Ilam and Khuzestan provinces were hot spots for the total PA volume. CONCLUSIONS: The regions with low and high PA are predominately situated in the near center/southeast and west, respectively.

BACKGROUND: The information on the geographical characteristics of chronic liver diseases (CLD) in Italy is out-dated. AIM: To provide up-dated information on the geographical pattern of patients with CLD born in Italy. METHODS: Patients with CLD were enrolled in two national surveys performed in 2001 and 2014, which prospectively recruited subjects aged ≥18 years referring to Italian liver units located throughout the country that apply a similar clinical approach and analytical methods. RESULTS: The total number of patients enrolled was 11,676. Alcohol-related CLD was more frequently observed in northern/central areas (25.0% vs. 20.7%, p < .001), while HBV-related (15.4% vs. 13.3%, p = .02) and HCV-related (71.2% vs. 67.1%, p < .001) CLD prevailed in southern areas/main islands (Sicily and Sardinia). These differences were stable over time. Liver cirrhosis without HCC was diagnosed more frequently in southern area/islands than in northern/central areas (23.7% vs. 18.8%, p < .01). Moreover, an increased proportion over time of patients with cirrhosis without HCC was observed both in northern/central areas (17.3% vs. 27.4%, p < .01) and in southern area/islands (22.6% vs. 27.9%, p < .01). CONCLUSIONS: These up-dated findings show different geographical patterns of CLD in Italy, reflecting different behavioural habits and socio-economic conditions across the country. They may be useful to apply more adequate preventive measures and to allocate economic resources.

In Estonia, northeastern Europe, antibodies against Toxoplasma gondii are common in many host species, including wildlife, domestic animals, and humans. Our nationwide study aimed to estimate T. gondii seroprevalence and its geographical distribution, and to evaluate plausible risk factors for seropositivity in free-ranging moose (Alces alces) hunted for human consumption in 2015. We screened sera or plasma from 463 moose for presence of anti-T. gondii immunoglobulin G antibodies with a commercial direct agglutination test, using a cut-off titer 40 for seropositivity. Altogether 111 moose tested seropositive, yielding a seroprevalence estimate of 23.97%. Seropositive moose were detected in all the 13 counties where the samples originated from. Based on a multivariable logistic regression model, 'being female', 'being adult', and 'being from the northern part of the country' were significant risk factors, with odds ratios of 2.91, 3.07, and 3.11, respectively, and there was interaction between the variables 'being female' and 'being from the northern part of the country'. A substantial proportion of the moose investigated had been exposed to T. gondii. Presence of the parasite in edible tissues of the moose was not shown in the present study, but moose hunted in Estonia should be considered a potential T. gondii infection source to other hosts, including humans. Seropositivity indicates previous exposure, and because the seroprevalence was higher in adults than in calves and because moose are herbivores, the exposure was likely exposure to and ingestion of T. gondii oocysts. The results can thus be interpreted to indicate that the environment in Estonia was widely contaminated with T. gondii oocysts, in particular in the northern part of the country. Investigation of samples from a free-ranging herbivorous host that is hunted in large numbers appears useful in revealing environmental distribution patterns of T. gondii.

BACKGROUND: Measuring malignant mesothelioma (MM) occurrence is a useful means to monitor the impact of past asbestos exposure and possibly identify new sources of asbestos exposure. OBJECTIVES: Aim of this study is to describe the results of the MM registry of the Lombardy Region, North-West Italy, the most populated (currently, 10 million inhabitants) and industrialised Italian region. METHODS: We extracted from the Lombardy Region Mesothelioma Registry (Registro Mesoteliomi Lombardia, RML) database all incident cases of MM (pleura, peritoneum, pericardium, and tunica vaginalis testis) with first diagnosis in 2000 through 2012. For each Province, we calculated crude and standardised incidence rates using Italy 2001, European, and world (Segi's) standard populations. To examine spatial patterns of MM occurrence across municipalities we drew maps of crude rates smoothed according to the Besag, York and Mollié (BYM) method. RESULTS: We recorded 4442 MM cases (2850 in men and 1592 in women), representing about one fourth of MM cases occurring in Italy. Occupational exposure was more frequent in men (73.6%) than in women (38.2%). The crude regional rates were 4.7 per 100,000 person-years in men and 2.5 per 100,000 person-years in women. The highest rates were observed in the Pavia Province (crude rates: 8.7 per 100,000 in men and 5.3 and per 100,000 person-years in women). CONCLUSIONS: This study documented high MM occurrence in both genders, attributable to extensive asbestos exposure in the past.

Three fish species, mud carp (Cirrhinus molitorella), tilapia (Tilapia nilotica), and plecostomus (Hypostomus plecostomus), from rivers in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) were analyzed for dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane and its metabolites (DDTs), hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), and Dechlorane Plus (DP). The concentrations of DDTs, HCHs, PCBs, PBDEs, DBDPE, and DP ranged from 380-57,000, 5.5-100, 30-4200, 6.9-690, 0.29-460, and 0.09-20ng/g lipid weight, respectively. Congener profiles or chemical compositions of PBDEs, DPs, DDTs, and HCHs in plecostomus differed significantly from those in the other two fish species, which can be ascribed to species-specific metabolism. DDTs derived from historical residue and land erosion remained the predominant pollutants in the PRD, while industrial and urban activities resulted in elevated levels of PCBs and PBDEs in the metropolitan area. E-waste recycling activities have greatly impacted on the adjacent aquatic environment, and the potential point source for DBDPE was also revealed.
