ABSTRACT

The focus of this article is on the analysis of changes in the form and/or products of food consumption by those attending a bodybuilding gym located in Vitória/ES. This research is based on an understanding of the gym as a place where its own vocabularies, codes and rituals are engendered. Entering and attending the gym is seen as the point that generates behavioural changes and not just bodily ones that end up going beyond the physical limits of the space and reverberating in various daily practices of the regulars, having a central influence on a reformulation of consumer practices and products on the part of the students. The results focus on the importance given to food by this group, which ended up converging into a new form and commodity of consumption, causing changes in their relationship with the food that is now accepted and consumed.

ABSTRACT

The practice of the circus as an educational, fitness, recreational or artistic option shows a notable expansion in the national context in the last two decades. In particular, the practice of aerial disciplines has been increasing in schools, gyms and other public and private places. Based on this finding, the objective of this study was to analyze the training of teachers of aerial circus modalities in the Metropolitan Region of Campinas - SP. For this, we carried out a survey of establishments that offered regular classes, then we applied a semi-structured questionnaire (online) to 36 teachers. The result shows the first contact to circus happened mostly at the university and in circus schools. The "silk" is the most popular discipline; and the recreational represents the most common motivation, with an important demand for fitness and health promotion. We noted a diversified training, including artistic education and higher education degree for most of them.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to investigate, in a gym of Barreiro's region, peripheral zone of Belo Horizonte, if the weight-training can be considered as a leisure activity to your practitioners. As strategy a study case was conducted, with a qualitative and quantitative approach. In order to collect data, we used a standardized questionnaire and participant observation. 145 volunteers participated in the research. It was found that most research participants consider the practice of weight-training as a leisure activity, which enables spaces for sociability and confraternization. Nevertheless, we observed that, for these practitioners, the main reason for entering and remaining in the activity is body aesthetics (muscular hypertrophy), and weight-training can be considered a pleasant lifestyle that has a fundamental relevance for the researched subjects.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The learning process of Mathematics is a challenge in Latin America; therefore, it is of vital importance to conduct actions that improve the performance in this science. Methods: This article is reporting on quasi-experimental research, where, through the use of Brain Gym, the objective is to improve: the definition of rational numbers, problem-solving ability, mathematical order relationships, and equivalent fractions. We worked with 67 students between 12 and 14 years old, organized into an experimental group (n = 35) and a control group (no participation group; n = 32). Results: We made pre and post-test measurements and found that the control group students improved in their problem-solving ability F(1,65) = 8.76, p = 0.04, η 2 = 0.12 and equivalent fractions F(1,65) = 4.54, p = 0.03, η 2 = 0.06. Discussion: In conclusion, the importance of applying innovative processes to improve the teaching and learning of Mathematics can be affirmed. It is important to note that both the control and experimental groups improved their learning, however, the experimental group did so to a greater extent than the students in the control group, who received a traditional educational process, and they did learn, but not at the level of the experimental group.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The consumption of anabolic-androgenic steroid substances (AAS) is not limited to use in professional sports, it has now been extended to gym users who practice sports for aesthetic purposes. However, little is known about its consequences on cognitive function due to its prolonged consumption and in high doses. Therefore, a systematic review of the studies carried out during the last decade (2011-2021) was carried out. Seven articles were included for review, highlighting that gym users with long-term or substance-dependent use of AAS presenting deficits in certain cognitive functions (memory and executive functions) compared to non-users, short-term users, or not dependents. Although more research is needed on the comprehensive evaluation of the different cognitive processes, the results of these studies offer important evidence so that health professionals, sport sciences, fitness or sports trainers, gym users and the public in general can attend to, intervene or prevent possible consequences.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has affected workers in different health services including exercise professionals (EP). The urgent need to adapt in-person to online activities might have led to increased frequency of anxiety and depressive symptoms. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to identify the determinants of aggravated depressive and anxiety symptoms in EP in southern Brazil during social distancing from the COVID-19. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with EP who worked at fitness centers, sports clubs, private schools, or at a public exercise program offered by the municipal council. We used an online-based, self-administered, adapted version of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale to compare symptoms of depression and anxiety pre- and during social distancing. RESULTS: Participants (n = 201) had a mean age of 32.7±8.0 years, with more than half being male, white, and having an university degree. We observed that 81%and 71%of respondents reported higher frequency in anxiety and depression symptoms, respectively, during social distancing than in the period before it. Physical education teachers, women, non-white professionals, and those with chronic disease were more likely to worsen anxiety symptoms. Women had higher odds to increased frequency in depressive symptoms. Physical activity and previous experience with internet-based tools for working activities reduced the risk of increased depressive symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: Sex, ethnicity, chronic diseases, educational level, physical activity, and experience with online tools were determinants for increased frequency of depression and anxiety symptoms in EP.

ABSTRACT

Dietary supplements have been increasingly used by gym users and are often consumed without the guidance of a health professional. Moreover, the indiscriminate supplements use can have adverse health effects, such as changes in liver and kidney function. The aim of this study was to verify the association between dietary supplements intake with alterations in the liver and kidney function among gym users. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 594 gym users (mean age 37 (sd 14) years, 55·2 % women) from a city in southern Brazil. A questionnaire was used to evaluate the use of dietary supplements. The markers of the liver (alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase, γ-glutamyltransferase) and renal (creatinine and urea) function were also evaluated on a subsample of the study population. Data were analysed by binary logistic regression, adjusted for sex, age and education. The prevalence of dietary supplement intake was 36·0 %. Individuals who intake dietary supplements showed a higher prevalence to present slight alterations in the AST enzyme and in the urea after adjustments for potential confounders. In conclusion, the use of dietary supplement was associated with slight alterations in AST enzyme and in the urea among gym users. These findings show the importance of using supplements correctly, especially with guidance from professionals trained to avoid possible risks to health.

ABSTRACT

The aims for this study were to perform a Portuguese language cross-cultural adaptation of the Teruel Orthorexia Scale (TOS) and to evaluate the scale's psychometric properties, including verifying the frequency of behaviors characteristic of orthorexia nervosa and healthy orthorexia, among a group of Brazilian gym users. First, we adapted the Spanish version of the TOS to the Brazilian Portuguese language following international protocols to guarantee idiomatic, semantic, conceptual, and cultural equivalence. Then participants completed both the new Portuguese version of the TOS and a socioeconomic questionnaire. Among our sample of 226 young Brazilian adults (63.7% men; M age = 28.8, SD = 5.1 years), we assessed the bi-factorial model of the TOS through factorial, convergent, and discriminant validity, reliability, and factorial invariance. We calculated the mean scores of the TOS factors and the frequency of behaviors of both orthorexia nervosa and healthy orthorexia. The new Portuguese version was well understood by participants, and the TOS bi-factorial model presented adequate psychometric properties and showed invariance in independent subsamples and in men and women. The mean scores were different between sexes only for orthorexia nervosa, with women obtaining higher values. The frequency of orthorexia nervosa behaviors was 5.3% and of healthy orthorexia was 41.2%. Based on these findings, the Brazilian Portuguese version of the TOS can be a useful tool for investigating orthorexia-like behaviors in future research.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To examine the prevalence, and the demographic, socio-economic, and health correlates to Outdoor Gyms (OGs) use for adults from a southern Brazilian city. STUDY DESIGN: Population-based cross-sectional study. METHODS: A total of 431 adults (66.8% women) aged 18-87 years living in the surroundings of four OGs distributed in different regions of the city were randomly selected. Information about OG use for physical activity (PA) practice, and demographic, socio-economic, and health variables were collected by household interviews. Associations between independent variables and OG use were analyzed with results expressed as odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI). RESULTS: About one-third of participants (30.4%; 95% CI: 26.1-34.7) informed using OGs for PA practice, and 20.4% (95% CI 16.8-24.4) informed using it twice or more times a week (≥2x/week). Adjusted analysis indicated that the OG use ≥2x/week is higher for women (OR: 1.93; 95% CI: 1.11-3.35) and for those with lower family income (OR: 2.13; 95% CI: 1.03-4.13) than men and those with higher family income, respectively. CONCLUSION: About 30% of the population uses OGs for PA practice. Women and low-income people are those who more commonly use OGs for PA practice. The installation of these facilities in public spaces may reduce social inequities related to leisure-time PA.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT This study aimed to understand the meanings produced with the practice of dance in gyms. Phenomenology was used as a theoretical-methodological approach, valuing the experiences described by teachers and coordinators through semi-structured interviews, interpreted through ideographic and nomothetic analyses. The analyzes allowed us to identify multiple meanings attributed to dance in gyms. It is concluded that, although there is a centrality of dance as exercise and consumption product in gyms, institutions, in the figure of coordinators and teachers, not only recognize its multifaceted characteristics, but also constitute themselves as actors that compose and produce new meanings to their practice.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This article discusses the relationship between physical education and health in Rio de Janeiro in the nineteenth century, drawing on the case of one of the most prestigious schools at the time, Colégio Abílio. Rather than merely revealing the discourses that surrounded the provision of physical education at the school, we seek to comprehend the different ways in which it was incorporated into its educational routine. Two sources of different kinds were used: newspapers published in the city and the novel O Ateneu, by Raul Pompéia. We conclude that the challenge in understanding the social presence of physical education in the period in question is how to pick up the multiple apprehensions that surrounded it.

ABSTRACT

In order to understand the decisionmaking process of individuals who hire the services of a fitness gym, but do not frequent same, this article analyzes growth in this sector and includes the behavioral changes observed during this process, while presenting results of previous related analyzes. After that a brief theoretical review of economic psychology and decision making is presented to support the preparation of the questionnaire and the interview applied to gym owners and clients. The primary data are then analyzed using an exploratory qualitative method and the results are presented according to the theories presented previously. The results reaffirm the irrational behavior of consumption as well as demonstrating the importance of emotional operators such as pleasure and pain, and the need for exclusive attention on the part of the client.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to evaluate the body image dissatisfaction, and negative attitudes towards physical exercise, and the correlation among these two factors in individuals who frequently go to gyms. A sample of 100 sportspeople (67 women and 33 men) has answered electronically the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) and Commitment Exercise Scale (CES). Participants also informed weight, height, time spent at the gym and their objectives in exercising. Pearson´s correlation analysis between BSQ and CES were evaluated, and CES scores were compared to BSQ classifications using Student's t-test. Differences between genders were evaluated using generalized linear model. Linear regression model tested predictors for body satisfaction and attitudes towards exercise. It was found that women have a higher level of body image dissatisfaction (p < 0,001). Moreover, there was not any difference between sex in relation to physical exercises. There was not found any correlation between body image dissatisfaction and the attitudes towards physical exercises, however, there was a positive correlation between Body Mass Index (BMI) and body image dissatisfaction (p = 0,001 to men; p = 0,002 to women). The time spent at the gym was predictor to negative attitudes towards physical exercises (R2 = 0,580), and the BMI and a smaller importance of leisure in the practice of physical exercise were predictors of body insatisfaction (R2 = 0,368). Similar studies evaluating other body image aspects, such as drive for muscularity are needed.

ABSTRACT

The objective of the study was to evaluate the customers’ perception of gyms on the importance and performance of services. The sample consisted of 108 clients and used the questionnaire proposed by Calesco, Both and Soriano (2013). Data analysis used descriptive statistics to determine the mean and standard deviation, Kolmogorov Smirnov Test Mann-Whitney test and considered a significance level of 95% (p <0,05). Customers tend to maintain high perceived value on the importance of independentpractice time. However, the higher the number of academies have attended more critical vision forward certain indicators. Regarding performance, customers tend to attribute concepts lower with increasing time of practice, and especially when they have practical experience in more than a gym...
