ABSTRACT

Cooking time is a crucial determinant of culinary quality of cassava roots and incorporating it into the early stages of breeding selection is vital for breeders. This study aimed to assess the potential of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in classifying cassava genotypes based on their cooking times. Five cooking times (15, 20, 25, 30, and 40 minutes) were assessed and 888 genotypes evaluated over three crop seasons (2019/2020, 2020/2021, and 2021/2022). Fifteen roots from five plants per plot, featuring diameters ranging from 4 to 7 cm, were randomly chosen for cooking analysis and spectral data collection. Two root samples (15 slices each) per genotype were collected, with the first set aside for spectral data collection, processed, and placed in two petri dishes, while the second set was utilized for cooking assessment. Cooking data were classified into binary and multiclass variables (CT4C and CT6C). Two NIRs devices, the portable QualitySpec® Trek (QST) and the benchtop NIRFlex N-500 were used to collect spectral data. Classification of genotypes was carried out using the K-nearest neighbor algorithm (KNN) and partial least squares (PLS) models. The spectral data were split into a training set (80%) and an external validation set (20%). For binary variables, the classification accuracy for cassava cooking time was notably high ( R C a l 2 ranging from 0.72 to 0.99). Regarding multiclass variables, accuracy remained consistent across classes, models, and NIR instruments (~0.63). However, the KNN model demonstrated slightly superior accuracy in classifying all cooking time classes, except for the CT4C variable (QST) in the NoCook and 25 min classes. Despite the increased complexity associated with binary classification, it remained more efficient, offering higher classification accuracy for samples and facilitating the selection of the most relevant time or variables, such as cooking time ≤ 30 minutes. The accuracy of the optimal scenario for classifying samples with a cooking time of 30 minutes reached R C a l 2   = 0.86 and R V a l 2 = 0.84, with a Kappa value of 0.53. Overall, the models exhibited a robust fit for all cooking times, showcasing the significant potential of NIRs as a high-throughput phenotyping tool for classifying cassava genotypes based on cooking time.

ABSTRACT

Despite fungal diseases affecting the aerial parts of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) and causing significant yield losses, there is a lack of comprehensive studies assessing resistance in the species' germplasm. This study aimed to evaluate the phenotypic diversity for resistance to anthracnose disease (CAD), blight leaf spot (BliLS), brown leaf spot (BLS), and white leaf spot (WLS) in cassava germplasm and to identify genotypes suitable for breeding purposes. A total of 837 genotypes were evaluated under field conditions across two production cycles (2021 and 2022). Artificial inoculations were carried out in the field, and data on yield and disease severity were collected using a standardized rating scale. The top 25 cassava genotypes were selected based on a selection index for disease resistance and agronomic traits. High environmental variability resulted in low heritabilities (h2) for CAD, WLS, and BLS (h2 = 0.42, 0.34, 0.29, respectively) and moderate heritability for BliLS (h2 = 0.51). While the range of data for disease resistance was narrow, it was considerably wider for yield traits. Cluster analysis revealed that increased yield traits and disease severity were associated with higher scores of the first and second discriminant functions, respectively. Thus, most clusters comprised genotypes with hybrid characteristics for both traits. Overall, there was a strong correlation among aerial diseases, particularly between BLS and BliLS (r = 0.96), while the correlation between CAD and other diseases ranged from r = 0.53 to 0.58. Yield traits showed no significant correlations with disease resistance. Although the mean selection differential for disease resistance was modest (between -2.31% and -3.61%), selection based on yield traits showed promising results, particularly for fresh root yield (82%), dry root yield (39%), shoot yield (49%), and plant vigor (26%). This study contributes to enhancing genetic gains for resistance to major aerial part diseases and improving yield traits in cassava breeding programs.

ABSTRACT

Cassava root-rot incited by soil-borne pathogens is one of the major diseases that reduces root yield. Although the use of resistant cultivars is the most effective method of management, the genetic basis for root-rot resistance remains poorly understood. Therefore, our work analyzed the transcriptome of two contrasting genotypes (BRS Kiriris/resistant and BGM-1345/susceptible) using RNA-Seq to understand the molecular response and identify candidate genes for resistance. Cassava seedlings (resistant and susceptible to root-rot) were both planted in infested and sterilized soil and samples from Initial-time and Final-time periods, pooled. Two controls were used: (i) seedlings collected before planting in infested soil (absolute control) and, (ii) plants grown in sterilized soil (mock treatments). For the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) analysis 23.912 were expressed in the resistant genotype, where 10.307 were differentially expressed in the control treatment, 15 DEGs in the Initial Time-period and 366 DEGs in the Final Time-period. Eighteen candidate genes from the resistant genotype were related to plant defense, such as the MLP-like protein 31 and the peroxidase A2-like gene. This is the first model of resistance at the transcriptional level proposed for the cassava × root-rot pathosystem. Gene validation will contribute to screening for resistance of germplasm, segregating populations and/or use in gene editing in the pursuit to develop most promising cassava clones with resistance to root-rot.

ABSTRACT

Genotype-environment interaction (GEI) presents challenges when aiming to select optimal cassava genotypes, often due to biased genetic estimates. Various strategies have been proposed to address the need for simultaneous improvements in multiple traits, while accounting for performance and yield stability. Among these methods are mean performance and stability (MPS) and the multi-trait mean performance and stability index (MTMPS), both utilizing linear mixed models. This study's objective was to assess genetic variation and GEI effects on fresh root yield (FRY), along with three primary and three secondary traits. A comprehensive evaluation of 22 genotypes was conducted using a randomized complete block design with three replicates across 47 distinct environments (year x location) in Brazil. The broad-sense heritability (H2) averaged 0.37 for primary traits and 0.44 for secondary traits, with plot-based heritability (hmÉ¡2) consistently exceeding 0.90 for all traits. The high extent of GEI variance (σÉ¡xe2) demonstrates the GEI effect on the expression of these traits. The dominant analytic factor (FA3) accounted for over 85% of the total variance, and the communality (ɧ) surpassed 87% for all traits. These values collectively suggest a substantial capacity for genetic variance explanation. In Cluster 1, composed of remarkably productive and stable genotypes for primary traits, genotypes BRS Novo Horizonte and BR11-34-69 emerged as prime candidates for FRY enhancement, while BRS Novo Horizonte and BR12-107-002 were indicated for optimizing dry matter content. Moreover, MTMPS, employing a selection intensity of 30%, identified seven genotypes distinguished by heightened stability. This selection encompassed innovative genotypes chosen based on regression variance index (Sdi2, R2, and RMSE) considerations for multiple traits. In essence, incorporating methodologies that account for stability and productive performance can significantly bolster the credibility of recommendations for novel cassava cultivars.

ABSTRACT

Thematic collections (TCs), which are composed of genotypes with superior agronomic traits and reduced size, offer valuable opportunities for parental selection in plant breeding programs. Three TCs were created to focus on crucial attributes: root yield (CC_Yield), pest and disease resistance (CC_Disease), and root quality traits (CC_Root_quality). The genotypes were ranked using the best linear unbiased predictors (BLUP) method, and a truncated selection was implemented for each collection based on specific traits. The TCs exhibited minimal overlap, with each collection comprising 72 genotypes (CC_Disease), 63 genotypes (CC_Root_quality), and 64 genotypes (CC_Yield), representing 4%, 3.5%, and 3.5% of the total individuals in the entire collection, respectively. The Shannon-Weaver Diversity Index values generally varied but remained below 10% when compared to the entire collection. Most TCs exhibited observed heterozygosity, genetic diversity, and the inbreeding coefficient that closely resembled those of the entire collection, effectively retaining 90.76%, 88.10%, and 88.99% of the alleles present in the entire collection (CC_Disease, CC_Root_quality, and CC_Disease, respectively). A PCA of molecular and agro-morphological data revealed well-distributed and dispersed genotypes, while a discriminant analysis of principal components (DAPC) displayed a high discrimination capacity among the accessions within each collection. The strategies employed in this study hold significant potential for advancing crop improvement efforts.

ABSTRACT

Despite the economic and social importance, high-yielding cassava cultivars are only released after extensive research, mainly due to the low multiplication rate. This study aimed to assess the impact of using smaller-sized seed cuttings treated with agrochemicals (8MP) compared to the conventional planting size (16 cm) on genetic parameters, agronomic performance, and the ranking of cassava clones based on yield and growth attributes. The evaluation was carried out in clonal evaluation trial (CET), preliminary yield trial (PYT), and uniform yield trials (UYT). Additionally, a new selection scheme for cassava breeding programs was proposed. A total of 169 clones were evaluated, including 154 improved clones at different stages of selection and 15 local varieties used as checks. Field trials were conducted using both sizes of propagative material (8MP and 16 cm) in each phase of the breeding program. The data were analyzed using mixed models, considering the random effects of genotype and genotype-environment interaction (G×E) to determine variances and heritabilities. Bland-Altman concordance and correlation analysis of selection indices were employed to examine the consistency in the ranking of cassava clones using different seed cutting sizes. The distribution of variance components, heritabilities, means, and range of the 8MP and 16 cm trials in different phases of the cassava breeding program exhibited remarkable similarity, thereby enabling a comparative assessment of similar genetic effects. With a selection intensity of 30%, the concordance in clone ranking was 0.41, 0.57, and 0.85 in CET, PYT, and UYT trials, respectively, when comparing the selection based on 8MP and 16 cm trials. It is worth noting that the ranking of the top 15% remained largely unchanged. Based on the findings, proposed changes in the cassava selection scheme involve increasing the number of trials starting from the CET phase, early incorporation of G×E interaction, elimination of the PYT trial, reduction of the breeding cycle from 5 to 3 years, and a decrease in the time required for variety development from 11 to 9 years. These modifications are expected to lead to cost reduction and enhance the effectiveness of cassava breeding programs.

ABSTRACT

Cassava is an essential tuber crop used to produce food, feed, and beverages. Whitefly pests, including Aleurothrixus aepim (Goeldi, 1886) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), significantly affect cassava-based agroecosystems. Plant odours have been described as potential pest management tools, and the cassava clone M Ecuador 72 has been used by breeders as an essential source of resistance. In this study, we analysed and compared the volatile compounds released by this resistant clone and a susceptible genotype, BRS Jari. Constitutive odours were collected from young plants and analysed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry combined with chemometric tools. The resistant genotype released numerous compounds with previously described biological activity and substantial amounts of the monoterpene (E)-ß-ocimene. Whiteflies showed non-preferential behaviour when exposed to volatiles from the resistant genotype but not the susceptible genotype. Furthermore, pure ocimene caused non-preferential behaviour in whiteflies, indicating a role for this compound in repellence. This report provides an example of the intraspecific variation in odour emissions from cassava plants alongside information on odorants that repel whiteflies; these data can be used to devise whitefly management strategies. A better understanding of the genetic variability in cassava odour constituents and emissions under field conditions may accelerate the development of more resistant cassava varieties.

ABSTRACT

Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) holds significant importance as one of the world's key starchy crop species. This study aimed to develop core collections by utilizing both phenotypic data (15 quantitative and 33 qualitative descriptors) and genotypic data (20,023 single-nucleotide polymorphisms) obtained from 1,486 cassava accessions. Six core collections were derived through two optimization strategies based on genetic distances: Average accession-to-nearest-entry and Average entry-to-nearest-entry, along with combinations of phenotypic and genotypic data. The quality of the core collections was evaluated by assessing genetic parameters such as genetic diversity Shannon-Weaver Index, inbreeding (Fis), observed (Ho), and expected (Hs) heterozygosity. While the selection of accessions varied among the six core collections, a seventh collection (consolidated collection) was developed, comprising accessions selected by at least two core collections. Most collections exhibited genetic parameters similar to the complete collection, except for those developed by the Average accession-to-nearest-entry algorithm. However, the variations in the maximum and minimum values of Ho, Hs, and Fis parameters closely resembled the complete collection. The consolidated collection and the collection constructed using genotypic data and the Average entry-to-nearest-entry algorithm (GenEN) retained the highest number of alleles (>97%). Although the differences were not statistically significant (above 5%), the consolidated collection demonstrated a distribution profile and mean trait values most similar to the complete collection, with a few exceptions. The Shannon-Weaver Index of qualitative traits exhibited variations exceeding ±10% when compared to the complete collection. Principal component analysis revealed that the consolidated collection selected cassava accessions with a more uniform dispersion in all four quadrants compared to the other core collections. These findings highlight the development of optimized and valuable core collections for efficient breeding programs and genomic association studies.

Introduction: In the French overseas department of French Guiana, in South America, nutrition therapy for the management of diabetes is based on French guidelines. However, this region is demographically diverse and includes several populations of Indigenous Peoples, Parikwene among others, also called Palikur. Due to socio-economical, cultural, and geographical differences, along with distinctions in the local food system, dietary recommendations, which many consider in the context of post-colonial power dynamics, are not well suited to local populations. In the absence of suitable recommendations, it is hypothesized that local populations will adapt their dietary practices considering diabetes as an emerging health problem. Methods: Seventy-five interviews were conducted with community members and Elders, as well as healthcare professionals and administrators providing services to the Parikwene population of Macouria and Saint-Georges de l'Oyapock communes. Data regarding the representation of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) consumption and diabetes were collected via semi-structured interviews and participant observation (i.e., observation and participation in community activities), namely via participating in activities related to the transformation of cassava tubers at swidden and fallow fields. Results and Discussion: Parikwene have adapted the transformation of cassava tubers for their consumption in the management of diabetes.The importance of cassava tubers as a staple and core food to the Parikwene food system was established by identifying it as a cultural keystone species. Narratives illustrated conflicting perceptions regarding the implication of cassava consumption in the development of diabetes. Adaptations to the operational sequence involved in the transformation of cassava tubers led to the production of distinct cassava roasted semolina (i.e., couac), based on organoleptic properties (i.e., sweet, and acidic couac). Preferences for the consumption of acidic couac were grounded in the Parikwene knowledge system, as well as attention to diabetes related symptoms and glucometer readings. Conclusion: These results provide important insights related to knowledge, attitudes, and practices in developing locally and culturally adapted approaches to providing dietary recommendations in the treatment of diabetes.

ABSTRACT

Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) starch consists of amylopectin and amylose, with its properties determined by the proportion of these two polymers. Waxy starches contain at least 95% amylopectin. In the food industry, waxy starches are advantageous, with pastes that are more stable towards retrogradation, while high-amylose starches are used as resistant starches. This study aimed to associate near-infrared spectrophotometry (NIRS) spectra with the waxy phenotype in cassava seeds and develop an accurate classification model for indirect selection of plants. A total of 1127 F2 seeds were obtained from controlled crosses performed between 77 F1 genotypes (wild-type, Wx_). Seeds were individually identified, and spectral data were obtained via NIRS using a benchtop NIRFlex N-500 and a portable SCiO device spectrometer. Four classification models were assessed for waxy cassava genotype identification: k-nearest neighbor algorithm (KNN), C5.0 decision tree (CDT), parallel random forest (parRF), and eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGB). Spectral data were divided between a training set (80%) and a testing set (20%). The accuracy, based on NIRFlex N-500 spectral data, ranged from 0.86 (parRF) to 0.92 (XGB). The Kappa index displayed a similar trend as the accuracy, considering the lowest value for the parRF method (0.39) and the highest value for XGB (0.71). For the SCiO device, the accuracy (0.88-0.89) was similar among the four models evaluated. However, the Kappa index was lower than that of the NIRFlex N-500, and this index ranged from 0 (parRF) to 0.16 (KNN and CDT). Therefore, despite the high accuracy these last models are incapable of correctly classifying waxy and non-waxy clones based on the SCiO device spectra. A confusion matrix was performed to demonstrate the classification model results in the testing set. For both NIRS, the models were efficient in classifying non-waxy clones, with values ranging from 96-100%. However, the NIRS differed in the potential to predict waxy genotype class. For the NIRFlex N-500, the percentage ranged from 30% (parRF) to 70% (XGB). In general, the models tended to classify waxy genotypes as non-waxy, mainly SCiO. Therefore, the use of NIRS can perform early selection of cassava seeds with a waxy phenotype.

ABSTRACT

Cassava is an important staple food for low-income countries. However, its cooking characteristics are especially affected by genotype. In this study, two groups of genotypes, namely hard to cook (HTC) and easy to cook (ETC), were harvested at different times (9 and 15 months), and evaluated by NMR coupled to chemometrics. Additionally, lignin of these materials was studied by 1H-13C HSQC NMR. The carbohydrates were the most important class of compounds to differentiate the cassava genotypes. The correlation of NMR with cooking time and starch content showed that the higher content of primary metabolites, mostly glucose, can be associated with longer cooking times and reduction of starch, corroborating the metabolic pathways analysis. Furthermore, it was observed that the lignin from cell walls did not differentiate the cooking performance of the genotypes.

O objetivo dessa pesquisa foi avaliaro crescimento,produtividade easrespostas fisiológicas da mandioca sob níveis de irrigação na Zona da Mata de Alagoas. O delineamento estatístico utilizado foi blocos casualizados, em esquema de parcelas subdivididas, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram seis níveis de irrigação, em função da evapotranspiração da cultura ­ETC(L0= 0% (sequeiro), L1= 40%, L2= 80%, L3= 120%, L4= 160% e L5= 200% da ETC). As variáveis foram divididas em grupos: crescimento e produção (avaliadas em seis períodosbimestrais ­1 ano) e as fisiológicas (taxa fotossintética líquida e transpiratória, temperatura foliar, condutância estomática, eficiência instantânea do uso de água, rendimento quântico potencial, eficiência quântica efetiva do fotossistema II (ΦPSII) eíndice SPADforam avaliadas em cinco períodos bimestrais ­10 meses).Obalanço hídrico dos níveis de irrigação, foi realizado em escala decendial. A evapotranspiração anual da cultura da mandiocaestimada foi1.030 mm, e nas áreas de sequeiro, a chuva efetiva somouapenas 522 mm, o que geroudéficit hídrico de 508 mm, e isso torna evidente a importância de utilização da irrigação em cultivos na região. De maneira geral, crescimento, produtividade e as respostas fisiológicas da mandioca são superiores em áreas irrigadas quando comparadas com cultivos de sequeiro e a irrigação proporciona as produtividades de raízes e biomassa total de 97 e 155 t ha-1, sob os níveis de irrigação de 129 e 136% da ETC, respectivamente, na região estudada.(AU)


The objective of this research was to evaluate the growth, productivity and the physiological responses of cassava under irrigation levels in the Alagoas Forest Zone. The statistical design used was randomized blocks, in a split-plot scheme, with four replications. The treatments were six levels of irrigation, depending on the evapotranspiration of the crop ­ETC(L0=0% (Rainfed), L1= 40%, L2= 80%, L3= 120%, L4= 160% and L5= 200% of the ETC). The variables were divided into groups: growth and production (evaluated in six bimonthly periods -1 year) and the physiological (net photosynthetic rate and transpiratory,leaf temperature, stomatal conductance, instantaneous water use efficiency, potential quantum yield, effective quantum efficiency of photosystem II and SPAD indexwere evaluated in five bimonthly periods ­10 months). The water balance of the irrigation levels was carried out, on a decendial scale. The annual evapotranspiration of cassava addedaround 1,030 mm, and in dryland areas, the effective rainfall is only 522 mm, which generates a water deficit of 508 mm, and this makes the importance evident of use of irrigation in crops in the region. In general, cassava growth, yield andthephysiological responses are superior in irrigated areas when compared with therainfed crops, and irrigation providestheroot and total biomass yields of 97 and 155 Mg ha-1,under the irrigation levels of 129 and 136% of the ETC, respectively, in the studied region.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the response to fertilization and different weed control periods in the accumulation of dry matter of cassava leaves, stems, roots, and fresh mass roots yield. Two experiments were carried out on commercial fields in Ibarama, and Santa Maria municipalities located at the Rio Grande do Sul State, South Brazil, during the 2018/2019 growing season. Five treatments, varying chemical fertilizer applications and herbicides were used to represent management practices commonly used by farmers in Southern Brazil. The Simanihot process-based model simulated cassava growth, development, and productivity under potential conditions. Results show that the recommended dose of fertilizers and liming combined with pre-emergent herbicide and three mechanical weed clear management showed a 72% increase in root productivity compared to the management used by the average yield of smallholder farmers. Therefore, it is possible to reach 80% of the potential productivity by keeping the cassava crop free from weed interference and applying fertilizers. The presence of weeds during the first 100 days after planting reduced about 50% of the plant dry matter production in Ibarama and Santa Maria. Interestingly, it also affects 79.2%of fresh roots productivity in Ibarama.


Os objetivos deste trabalho foram avaliar a resposta à adubação e diferentes épocas de controle de plantas daninhas no acúmulo de matéria seca de folhas, hastes, raízes e produção de massa fresca de raízes de mandioca. Dois experimentos foram conduzidos em campos comerciais nos municípios de Ibarama e Santa Maria localizados no Rio Grande do Sul, Sul do Brasil, durante a safra 2018/2019. Cinco tratamentos, com aplicações variadas de fertilizantes químicos e herbicidas foram utilizados para representar as práticas de manejo comumente utilizadas pelos agricultores do Sul do Brasil. O modelo baseado no processo Simanihot foi usado para simular o crescimento, desenvolvimento e produtividade da mandioca sob condições potenciais. Os resultados mostram que a dose recomendada de fertilizantes e calagem combinados com herbicida pré-emergente e três manejos mecânicos de limpeza de plantas daninhas apresentaram um aumento de72% na produtividade de raízes em relação ao manejo utilizado pela produtividade média dos pequenos agricultores. Portanto, é possível atingir 80% do potencial de produtividade mantendo a cultura da mandioca livre de interferência de plantas daninhas e com aplicação de fertilizantes. A presença de plantas daninhas durante os primeiros 100 dias após o plantio reduziu cerca de 50% da produção de matéria seca da planta em Ibarama e Santa Maria e 79,2% da produtividade de raízes frescas em Ibarama.

ABSTRACT

This research evaluated the effects of the irrigation on growth and productivity of irrigated cassava in the Coastal Plateaus of Alagoas. The planting was done in randomized blocks, with six treatments and four replications. The treatments were irrigation levels in function of crop evapotranspiration - ETC (L0 = 0% (rainfed), L1 = 40%, L2 = 80%, L3 = 120%, L4 = 160% and L5 = 200% of ETC). The total water applied was defined as the total irrigation plus the effective rain. The annual evapotranspiration of the cassava plantations in the Costal Plateaus of Alagoas, was 1,030 mm. Plant growth increased significantly with irrigation and the maximum values of the following variables are: leaf area index = 7.6, length of commercial roots = 49 cm, maximum productivity (physical and economic) of commercial roots = 94 Mg ha-¹ and total biomass = 149 Mg ha-¹ and the harvest index = 0.66, all obtained with total irrigation depths (effective rain plus irrigation) between 817 and 963 mm. Finally, it is ratified that understanding the growth, the agricultural and economically viable productivity of irrigated cassava, is an indispensable factor for good management of the crop, especially in regions with irregular rainfall such as the Northeast of Brazil.


Esta pesquisa avaliou os efeitos da irrigação no crescimento e na produtividade da mandioca irrigada nos Tabuleiros Costeiros alagoanos. O plantio foi feito em blocos casualizados, com seis tratamentos e quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram níveis de irrigação em função da evapotranspiração da cultura - ETC (L0 = 0% (sequeiro), L1 = 40%, L2 = 80%, L3 = 120%, L4 = 160% e L5 = 200% da ETC). A lâmina total foi definida como o total da irrigação mais a chuva efetiva. A evapotranspiração anual da cultura da mandioca nos Tabuleiros Costeiros de Alagoas é 1.030 mm. O crescimento das plantas aumentou significativamente com a irrigação e os valores máximos das seguintes variáveis são: índice de área foliar = 7,6; comprimento de raízes comerciais = 49 cm; produtividades (física e econômica) máximas de raízes comerciais = 94 t ha-¹ e biomassa total = 149 t ha-¹ e o índice de colheita = 0,66, todos obtidos com lâminas de irrigação totais (chuva efetiva mais irrigação) entre 817 e 963 mm. Por fim, ratifica-se que entender o crescimento, as produtividades agrícola e economicamente viáveis da mandioca irrigada, é fator indispensável para se fazer um bom manejo da cultura, principalmente, em regiões com irregularidade de chuvas como o nordeste brasileiro.

Cold storage conditions during long-term periods can be critical for the quality of gluten-free products. The objective of this work was to elaborate gluten-free pasta using cassava starch and study the influence of different storage conditions on the textural and sensorial properties of gluten-pasta compared to regular pasta. Samples were initially frozen at two different temperatures, -50 °C and -150 °C, and then stored for six months at -25 °C. Physicochemical and rheological analyses were used to characterize the pasta dough. Then microbiological, instrumental texture, and sensorial analysis were used to further characterize the pasta throughout the cold storage period of 6 months. The gluten-free pasta's nutritional composition showed low fat and protein content and high crude fiber, carbohydrates, and energy value content in relation to the gluten-containing pasta. Both kinds of pasta dough presented a pseudoplastic behavior; however, the wheat flour pasta presented lower apparent viscosity. The texture profile of frozen pasta during the evaluation period did not significantly vary when comparing the two freezing temperatures. Although the firmness, chewability, and cohesiveness parameters slightly decreased during the storage, losses of firmness were not detected by the judges at the sensorial analysis. Finally, cassava starch pasta had a high acceptance. According to the purchase intention research, the judges routinely consume gluten-free pasta, showing the high commercialization potential of the obtained product.

This study proposes to relate the increase in phosphorus (P) supply in the soil, via phosphate fertilization, to oxidative damage and protection, phenylpropanoid metabolism, and enzymatic browning in minimally processed cassava. The roots were grown with 0, 60, and 120 kg ha-1 P2O5. The roots were harvested, and the yield and P content in the root, stem, and leaves were quantified. The roots were minimally processed and stored for 12 days at 5 °C. The higher supply of P in the soil increased the P content of roots and stems but not the agro-industrial yields. Roots grown at 120 kg ha-1 P2O5 showed higher detection of hydrogen peroxide, which was accompanied by increased phenolic compounds, soluble quinones, and antioxidant capacity and increased activities of the enzymes superoxide dismutase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase, and peroxidase. The present study thus demonstrates the role of phosphorus application, induction of the synthesis of phenolic compounds, and quality of fresh-cut cassava.

ABSTRACT

Manihot esculenta (cassava) is a root crop originating from South America that is a major staple in the tropics, including in marginal environments. This study focused on South American and African germplasm and investigated the genetic architecture of hydrogen cyanide (HCN), a major component of root quality. HCN, representing total cyanogenic glucosides, is a plant defense component against herbivory but is also toxic for human consumption. We genotyped 3354 landraces and modern breeding lines originating from 26 Brazilian states and 1389 individuals were phenotypically characterized across multi-year trials for HCN. All plant material was subjected to high-density genotyping using genotyping by sequencing. We performed genome-wide association mapping to characterize the genetic architecture and gene mapping of HCN. Field experiments revealed strong broad- and narrow-sense trait heritability (0.82 and 0.41, respectively). Two major loci were identified, encoding for an ATPase and a MATE protein, and contributing up to 7 and 30% of the HCN concentration in roots, respectively. We developed diagnostic markers for breeding applications, validated trait architecture consistency in African germplasm and investigated further evidence for the domestication of sweet and bitter cassava. Fine genomic characterization revealed: (i) the major role played by vacuolar transporters in regulating HCN content; (ii) the co-domestication of sweet and bitter cassava major alleles are dependent upon geographical zone; and (iii) the major loci allele for high HCN in M. esculenta Crantz seems to originate from its ancestor, M. esculenta subsp. flabellifolia. Taken together, these findings expand our insights into cyanogenic glucosides in cassava roots and its glycosylated derivatives in plants.

Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito da utilização de níveis crescentes do farelo de raiz de mandioca (FRM) na ração de frangos de corte sob o desempenho e o rendimento de carcaças, cortes e vísceras, no período 10 a 42 dias de vida. Foi realizado um delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, com quatro tratamentos e quatro repetições. A unidade experimental foi representada por 16 frangos machos e fêmeas da linhagem Cobb 500. Os tratamentos consistiram em quatro rações com 0%, 7,5%, 15% e 22,5% de farelo de raiz de mandioca em três programas de alimentação. Aos 42 dias, quatro aves por unidade foram abatidas e avaliados o rendimento de carcaça, principais cortes e vísceras comestíveis. A inclusão dos níveis de 15% e 22,5% de FRM na dieta dos frangos influenciou negativamente no ganho de peso, no consumo e na conversão alimentar no período inicial e de crescimento das aves. O rendimento de carcaça, cortes e vísceras não foram influenciados pela dieta. Com base nos resultados obtidos, recomenda-se o uso de até 7,5% do farelo de raiz de mandioca na dieta de frangos de corte da linhagem Cobb 500, no período de 10 a 42 dias, sem comprometer o desempenho zootécnico das aves e o rendimento de carcaças, dos cortes e vísceras comestíveis.

At 42 days old, four birds per unit were slaughtered and the carcass yield, main cuts, and edible viscera were evaluated. The inclusion of levels of 15% and 22.5% of CRM in the diet of broiler had a negative influence on weight gain, food consumption, and feed conversion in the initial period and in the overall growth of the birds. Carcass yield, cuts, and viscera were not influenced by the diet. Based on the results, it is recommended that a maximum of 7.5% of the cassava root bran may be used in the diet of broilers of the Cobb 500 strain, over 10 to 42 days, without compromising the zootechnical performance of the birds or the yield of edible carcasses, cuts, and viscera.

ABSTRACT

Apesar da mandioca ser reconhecida pela sua elevada tolerância à seca, a irrigação vem apresentando resultados satisfatórios. Entretanto, poucos estudos vêm sendo desenvolvidos visando a determinação dos efeitos da cobertura do solo, da irrigação e da combinação de ambos no desenvolvimento da cultura. O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar a influência da irrigação e da cobertura plástica do solo, no desempenho agronômico de mandioca de mesa. O plantio foi feito em canteiros, no sistema de fileira dupla com as manivas-sementes implantadas na vertical em espaçamento de 0,60 m entre linhas e 0,80 m entre plantas. Foram aplicados os tratamentos canteiro desnudo sem irrigação, canteiro coberto com plástico de polietileno preto sem irrigação, canteiro desnudo com irrigação e canteiro coberto com plástico de polietileno preto com irrigação. As irrigações foram por aspersão convencional, com base no balanço diário de água do solo na profundidade efetiva do sistema radicular da mandioca nos diferentes estágios de desenvolvimento da cultura. Os caracteres avaliados em duas safras foram: produtividade de parte aérea, produtividade de raízes, porcentagem de amido nas raízes e tempo para a cocção. A expressão dos caracteres produtividade de raízes, peso da parte aérea e teor de amido nas raízes, foi influenciada pelo manejo da irrigação e pela cobertura do solo. A utilização individual das tecnologias de irrigação e de cobertura plástica do solo, proporcionaram aumentos de produtividade de raízes de 55% e 13%, respectivamente, e quando foram utilizadas em conjunto a produtividade de raízes aumentou 89%.(AU)


Although cassava is recognized for its high tolerance to drought, irrigation is showing satisfactory results. However, few studies have been carried out to determine the effects of soil cover, irrigation and the combination of both on crop development. The objective of this study was to determine the influence of irrigation and plastic soil cover on the agronomic performance of sweet cassava. The planting was done in beds, in the double row system with the stem cutings implanted vertically, with 0.60 m between rows and 0.80 m between plants. The following treatments were applied: naked non-irrigated bedding, bedding covered with non-irrigated black polyethylene plastic, naked bedding with irrigation and bedding covered with irrigated black polyethylene plastic. Irrigation was performed by conventional sprinkling, based on the daily soil water balance at the effective depth of the cassava root system in the different stages of crop development. The characters evaluated were: shoot weight, root yield, starch percentage in the roots and time for cooking. The expression of the characters shoot weight, root yield and starch percentage in the roots was significantly influenced by irrigation management and soil cover. The individual use of irrigation and plastic soil cover technologies led to increases in root yield of 55% and 13%, respectively, and when used together, root yield increased by 89%.(AU)
