ABSTRACT

Tucupi is a broth derived from cassava roots which is produced after the spontaneous fermentation of manipueira (the liquid portion obtained by pressing cassava roots), followed by cooking. This product is widely consumed along with traditional dishes in the Brazilian Amazonia and is already used in different places worldwide. In this study, tucupi obtained from the markets of Belém (Pará, Brazil) and produced using agroindustrial (11 samples) and non-agroindustrial (11 samples) units were investigated to determine their physicochemical characteristics, total and free HCN contents, and free bioactive amine profiles. Most of the samples showed significant variations (p ≤ 0.05) in pH (2.82-4.67), total acidity (0.14-1.36 g lactic acid/100 mL), reducing sugars (up to 2.33 g/100 mL), and total sugars (up to 4.35 g/100 mL). Regarding the amines, four biogenic amines (0.5-4.2 mg/L tyramine, 1.0-23.1 mg/L putrescine, 0.5-66.8 mg/L histamine, and 0.6-2.9 mg/L tryptamine) and one polyamine (0.4-1.7 mg/L spermidine) were identified in the tucupi samples. Even in the tucupi produced using the agroindustrial units, which had quality seals provided by the local regulatory agency, high levels of biogenic amines (4.4-78.2 mg/L) were observed, as well as high dosages of total (8.87-114.66 mg/L) and free (0.80-38.38 mg/L) HCN. These facts highlight the need for better knowledge regarding the product manufacturing process to establish standardization and high-quality conditions for tucupi processing since high contents of biogenic amines and HCN are commonly associated with adverse health effects.

ABSTRACT

Cassava is a staple food in many countries, and this food source differs from other crops in that its processing generates a highly polluting and toxic residue (manipueira) that requires further treatment. The present study analyzed the economic feasibility of anaerobic digestion of manipueira for producing clean electricity through distributed generation (DG) while simultaneously eliminating toxic compounds. This eliminates the toxic residues. For this, an approach for the sizing of DG plants from manipueira biogas was presented, a non-trivial task which is not widespread in the literature. For two plants with different capacities, a deterministic economic analysis was carried out based on the criteria of Net Present Value, Internal Rate of Return, and Discounted Payback. Finally, the project risk was assessed through a sensitivity and stochastic analysis using Monte Carlo Simulation. The empirical verification was done on Brazilian data. When considering the NPV criterion, the results indicate a feasibility probability of 9.25% and 81.21% for scenarios 01 and 02, respectively. The results show that scale gains were important in reducing the impact of the investment and, at the same time, the larger scale of the project makes the cost of capital more relevant to the result. These findings show the need for subsidies for the investment, in addition to the promotion of specific credit lines that enable small-scale generation, or that can improve results in greater capacity.

Recently, cassava processing wastewater has been considered an alternative substrate for lactic acid production due to its appreciable carbohydrate levels. The authors carried out different batch reactor trials aiming to favor the production of lactic acid through the fermentation of non-sterilized cassava wastewater by an enriched culture of acidogenic microorganisms. To this end, the impact of different initial pHs (4.5, 5.0, 5.7, 6.5, and 7.0) and different initial substrate concentrations (10, 15.8, 30, 44.2, and 50 g/L) in terms of glucose on lactic acid production yield (Y) was evaluated by applying the design of experiment (DoE) known as central composite rotatable design (CCRD). The highest rate of lactic acid production (40 g/L) occurred with an initial pH of 6.5 and an initial substrate concentration of 50 g/L. The maximum yield was higher in trials T1, T2, T4, T5, and T8, reaching values of 0.80, 0.62, 0.60, 0.96, and 0.70 g/g, respectively. The maximum lactic acid productivity (P), of 0.60 and 0.73 g L-1  hr-1 , was observed in trials T5 and T8, respectively. The enriched culture of acidogenic microorganisms was shown to favor the production of lactic acid, since the production of other acids, such as acetic and propionic acid, did not exceed 3.5 and 4.5 g/L, respectively. © 2020 Water Environment Federation PRACTITIONER POINTS: Cassava wastewater presented potential to lactic acid production. The CCRD showed that highest lactic acid concentrations (40 g/L). The adoption of cassava wastewater or manipueira as a substrate resulted in important information on the tendency to obtain value-added products such as lactic acid.

ABSTRACT

Cassava, the 5th most important staple crop, generates at least 600L of wastewater per ton of processed root. This residue, cassava processing wastewater (CPW) has a high chemical oxygen demand, that can reach 56 g/L, and has also high concentrations of several mineral nutrients. The cultivation of microalgae such as Chlorella, Spirulina and wild strains was evaluated in the last years in raw, minimally processed and partially digested CPW. Concentrations of 2-4 g/L of these microalgae, comparable to those obtained in synthetic media, could be reached. The BOD of the residue was reduced by up to 92%. This process can be integrated into cassava processing industries, if challenges such as the toxicity of the concentrated residue, bacterial contamination, and the isolation of robust strains are addressed. Because CPW carries about 11% of the crop energy, integrating biogas production and microalgal cultivation into the cassava processing chain is promising.

ABSTRACT

The processing of Manihot esculenta (cassava) tubers yield different by-products, including cassava wastewater, which is the liquid pressed out of the tuber after it has been mechanically crushed. Cyanide poisoning after ingestion of cassava wastewater has been reported in ruminants and pigs in Northeastern Brazil. With the aim of studying its toxicity, cassava wastewater was administered orally to six sheep at doses of 0.99, 0.75, 0.70, 0.63, and 0.5 mg of hydrocyanic acid kg-1 body weight, which corresponded to 14.2, 10.6, 9.8, 8.89, and 7.1 mL of wastewater kg-1. On the second day, the sheep received a volume of wastewater which corresponded to 0.46, 0.34, 0.31, 0.28, and 0.23 mg of HCN kg-1. A sheep used as control received 9.9 mL of water kg-1 BW. Sheep that received from 0.75 to 0.99 mg kg-1 of HCN on the first day exhibited severe clinical signs of poisoning, and the sheep that received 0.63 and 0.5 mg kg-1 exhibited mild clinical signs. All sheep were successfully treated with sodium thiosulfate. On the second day, only the sheep that received 0.46 mg kg-1 and 0.34 mg kg-1 exhibited mild clinical signs and recovered spontaneously. The concentration of HCN in the wastewater was 71.69±2.19 μg mL-1 immediately after production, 30.56±2.45 μg mL-1 after 24 hours, and 24.25±1.28 μg mL-1 after 48 hours. The picric acid paper test was strongly positive 5 minutes after production; moderately positive 24 hours after production, and negative 48 hours after production. We conclude that cassava wastewater is highly toxic to sheep if ingested immediately after production, but rapidly loses toxicity in 24-48 hours.(AU)


O processamento dos tubérculos de Manihot esculenta (mandioca) produzem diferentes subprodutos, incluindo a manipueira, líquido que escorre das raízes da mandioca depois de ter sido mecanicamente prensada. A intoxicação por cianeto após a ingestão de manipueira tem sido relatada em ruminantes e suínos no Nordeste do Brasil. Com o objetivo de estudar sua toxicidade, administrou-se manipueira por via oral a seis ovelhas em doses de 0,99, 0,75, 0,70, 0,63 e 0,5 mg de peso corporal de ácido cianídrico kg-1, correspondendo a 14,2, 10,6, 9,8, 8,89 e 7,1 mL de manipueira kg-1 de peso corporal. No segundo dia, as ovelhas receberam um volume de manipueira que correspondeu a 0,46, 0,34, 0,31, 0,28 e 0,23 mg de HCN kg-1. Uma ovelha usada como controle recebeu 9,9 mL de água kg-1 de peso corporal. Ovelhas que receberam doses de 0,75 a 0,99 mg kg-1 de HCN no primeiro dia exibiram sinais clínicos graves de intoxicação e as ovelhas que receberam 0,63 e 0,5 mg kg-1 exibiram sinais clínicos leves. Todas as ovelhas foram tratadas com sucesso com tiossulfato de sódio. No segundo dia, apenas as ovelhas que receberam 0,46 mg kg-1 e 0,34 mg kg-1 apresentaram sinais clínicos leves e se recuperaram espontaneamente. A concentração de HCN na manipueira foi de 71,69 ± 2,19 μg mL-1 imediatamente após a produção, 30,56 ± 2,45 μg mL-1 após 24 horas e 24,25 ± 1,28 μg mL-1 após 48 horas. O teste de papel picrosódico foi fortemente positivo 5 minutos após a produção; moderadamente positivo 24 horas após a produção e negativo 48 horas após a produção. Concluímos que a manipueira é altamente tóxica para ovinos se ingeridas imediatamente após a produção, mas rapidamente perdem toxicidade em 24-48 horas.(AU)

BACKGROUND: Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz), a plant used as food and an ingredient in industry, contains cyanogenic glycosides. The cassava root contains wastewater, popularly known as manipueira, which is a toxic substance. Its ingestion by animals causes poisoning although they react positively to treatment with sodium thiosulfate. The present research evaluates the cytotoxicity and the mutagenicity of liquid waste produced in the process of industrialization of the bitter cassava, olho-junto variety. The liquid wastes are characterized as press water, which is obtained when the cassava roots are pressed; pond water, which is press water stored in impounded ponds; and a solution of sodium thiosulfate, pure and with other waste. RESULTS: The system tests comprised root meristematic cells of Allium cepa L. and bone marrow cells of Rattus norvegicus. Treatment with saline solution was cytotoxic for Allium cepa L. and significantly reduced cell division rate. Although no treatment was cytotoxic in any of the tests with rats, the thiosulfate solution was clastogenic for the chromosomal aberrations test. CONCLUSION: Since it is harmful to the genetic material submitted within the conditions of current research, sodium thiosulfate should only be used in emergency conditions in which the benefits exceed the risks.

ABSTRACT

O tucupi, produto amplamente consumido pela população do norte do Brasil, é obtido por meio de fermentação e cocção da manipueira, que é um subproduto da fabricação da farinha de mandioca seca. No processamento são utilizadas as raízes de mandioca que contêm elevado teor de ácido cianídrico (HCN), as quais quando ingeridas causam sério dano à saúde. No presente trabalho foram quantificados os teores de cianeto total e livre durante as etapas de processamento da manipueira desde a obtenção até a produção do tucupi. Além disso, foram determinados pH, acidez total titulável e teor de sólidos solúveis durante todas as etapas de processamento. A manipueira recém-extraída apresentou valores de 227,8 mg HCN/L de cianeto total e 46,6 mg HCN/L de cianeto livre. Após as etapas de fermentação houve decréscimo no teor de HCN, e o produto final (tucupi) apresentou valores de 37,1 mg HCN/L de cianeto total e 8,9 mg HCN/L de cianeto livre. Quanto aos demais parâmetros, os valores encontrados foram: pH (3,6), acidez total titulável (12,3 meqNaOH/100 mL) e sólidos solúveis (8,1 ºBrix). No presente estudo, o tucupi não apresentou valores elevados de cianeto total e livre após aplicação do processo de fermentação e cocção da manipueira.

ABSTRACT

The wastewater of the processing of cassava's flour (manipueira) was submitted to the anaerobic treatment in two phases: acidogenic and methanogenic. In the acidogenic phase, the wastewater was stabilized with NaOH (ASH) and with limestone (ASL). After that, both stabilized effluents were treated by a methanogenic reactor. Then, the effluent of the methanogenic reactor was used as fertilizer on maize in the initial growth stage (30 days), cultivated in pots in a greenhouse. The treatments were T1: control without urea addition (only N from soil); T2: NPK (2.2 g of urea with 45 percent of N); T3: ASH (84 mL.kg soil-1); T4: ASL (102 mL.kg soil-1); T5: double dose ASH (168 mL.kg soil-1) and T6: double dose ASL (204 mL.kg soil-1). Each treatment was composed by 4 plants/pot in five repetitions. It was observed that all the treatments with stabilized wastewater had favorable effect to the soil pH (> than 7.5) and basis saturation (V percent) in the soil around to 90 percent. The performances of nitrogen absorption by the maize plants were 64, 54, 80 and 78 percent for T3, T4, T5 and T6, respectively.


A água residuária do processamento de farinha de mandioca (manipueira) foi submetida ao tratamento anaeróbio em duas fases: acidogênica e metanogênica. Na fase acidogênica, a água residuária foi estabilizada com NaOH (ASH) e com calcário (ASL). Em seguida, ambos efluentes estabilizados foram tratados por um reator metanogênico. Então, o efluente do reator metanogênico foi usado como fertilizante no milho no estádio inicial de crescimento (30 dias) cultivado em vaso em casa de vegetação. Os tratamentos foram T1: controle sem uréia (somente N do solo); T2: NPK (2,2 g de uréia com 45 por cento de N); T3: ASH (84 mL.kg solo-1); T4: ASL (102 mL.kg solo-1); T5: dose dupla de ASH (168 mL.kg solo-1) e T6: dose dupla de ASL (204 mL.kg solo-1). Cada tratamento foi composto por 4 plantas/vaso com 5 repetições. Foi observado que todos os tratamentos com á água residuária estabilizada tiveram efeitos favoráveis ao pH do solo (> que 7,5) e saturação de bases (V por cento) no solo ao redor de 90 por cento. A eficiência de absorção de nitrogênio pelas plantas foram 64 por cento, 54 por cento, 80 por cento e 78 por cento para T3, T4, T5 e T6, respectivamente.

This study aimed at isolating and characterizing of microorganisms able to use linamarin as sole carbon source. Thirty one microbial strains were isolated from manipueira, a liquid effluent of cassava processing factories. Among these strains, Bacillus licheniformis (isolate 2_2) and Rhodotorulla glutinis (isolate L1) were able to degrade 71 percent and 95 percent of added linamarin, respectively, within 7 days, showing high biodegradation activity and great potential for detoxification of cassava processing wastewaters.

ABSTRACT

The performance of an anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) was evaluated in the treatment of cassava wastewater, a pollutant residue. An ABR divided in four equal volume compartments (total volume 4L) and operated at 35ºC was used in cassava wastewater treatment. Feed tank chemical oxygen demand (COD) was varied from 2000 to 7000 mg L-1 and it was evaluated the most appropriated hydraulic retention time (HRT) for the best performance on COD removal. The ABR was evaluated by analysis of COD (colorimetric method), pH, turbidity, total and volatile solids, alkalinity and acidity. Principal component analysis (PCA) was carried to better understand data obtained. The system showed buffering ability as acidity decreased along compartments while alkalinity and pH values were increased. There was particulate material retention and COD removal varied from 83 to 92% for HRT of 3.5 days.


O desempenho de um reator anaeróbio compartimentado (RAC) foi avaliado para o tratamento da manipueira, resíduo tóxico. Um RAC dividido em quatro compartimentos de mesmo volume (volume total 4L) e operado a 35ºC foi utilizado no tratamento da manipueira. A demanda química de oxigênio (DQO) do tanque de alimentação variou de 2000 a 7000 mg L-1 e avaliou-se o tempo de residência hidráulica (TRH) mais apropriado ao melhor desempenho do reator. O RAC foi avaliado pelas análises de DQO (método colorimétrico), pH, turbidez, sólidos totais e voláteis, alcalinidade e acidez. A Análise das Componentes Principais (PCA) foi conduzida para melhor compreensão dos dados obtidos. O sistema apresentou capacidade tamponante conforme a acidez decresceu ao longo dos compartimentos ao passo que a alcalinidade e o pH aumentaram. Houve retenção do material particulado e a remoção da DQO variou de 83 a 92% para TRH de 3,5 dias.

ABSTRACT

Biosurfactant production by some bacterial isolates using molasses, milk whey and cassava flour wastewater (manipueira) as substrates was evaluated and compared with the production in conventional medium. Isolates growing in manipueira medium decreased the surface tension around 42%, the highest reduction among all the substrates tested. From the eleven isolates tested, eight were able to decrease the surface tension to levels below 30 mN/m using manipueira as substrate. The isolates LB5a, LB2a, LB262, LBB and LB1a that gave surface tension about 26 mN/m were identified as Bacillus sp. Natural manipueira (high solids content) and decanted manipueira (no solids) were investigated as culture media for biosurfactant production by selected microorganisms. Natural manipueira medium showed minimum surface tension of 28 mN/m (LB5a isolate) whereas for decanted manipueira the lowest value was 26 mN/m (isolate LB2a). Average diameter of growth on manipueira agar was 7.2 cm for isolate LB5a suggesting a high growth capacity on this substrate. Manipueira comprises a potential alternative culture medium for biosurfactant production by the selected isolates.


Alguns isolados bacterianos foram avaliados quanto à capacidade de produção de biossurfatantes a partir de melaço, soro de leite e manipueira como substratos. A produção nestes meios alternativos foi comparada com a produção em meio de cultura convencional. Dentre os meios testados, a manipueira demonstrou a maior percentagem de redução na tensão superficial atingindo valores ao redor de 42%. Dos onze isolados testados, oito foram capazes de diminuir a tensão superficial para níveis inferiores à 30mN/m utilizando manipueira como substrato. Os isolados LB 5a, LB2a, LB262, LBB e LB1a apresentaram tensão superficial em torno de 26 mN/m sendo selecionados e posteriormente identificados como pertencentes ao gênero Bacillus sp. A manipueira natural (alto teor de sólidos) e a manipueira decantada (ausência de sólidos) foram investigadas como meios de cultivo para produção de biossurfatantes pelos microrganismos selecionados. O meio de manipueira natural apresentou tensão superficial minima de 28 mN/m (isolado LB5a) enquanto que o meio de manipueira decantada apresentou tensão superficial mínima de 26 mN/m (isolado LB2a). O diâmetro de crescimento médio do isolado LB5a em ágar manipueira foi de 7.2 cm sugerindo maior capacidade de crescimento neste substrato. A manipueira demonstrou potencial como meio de cultura alternativo para a produção de biossurfatantes pelos isolados selecionados.
