ABSTRACT
Green algae blooms of the genus Ulva are occurring globally and are primarily attributed to anthropogenic factors. At Los Tubos beach in Algarrobo Bay along the central Chilean coast, there have been blooms of these algae that persist almost year-round over the past 20 years, leading to environmental, economic, and social issues that affect the local government and communities. The objective of this study was to characterize the species that form these green tides based on a combination of ecological, morpho-anatomical, and molecular information. For this purpose, seasonal surveys of beached algal fronds were conducted between 2021 and 2022. Subsequently, the sampled algae were analyzed morphologically and phylogenetically using the molecular markers ITS1 and tufA, allowing for the identification of at least five taxa. Of these five taxa, three (U. stenophylloides, U. uncialis, U. australis) have laminar, foliose, and distromatic morphology, while the other two (U. compressa, U. aragoensis) have tubular, filamentous, and monostromatic fronds. Intertidal surveys showed that U. stenophylloides showed the highest relative coverage throughout the seasons and all intertidal levels, followed by U. uncialis. Therefore, we can establish that the green tides on the coast of Algarrobo in Chile are multispecific, with differences in relative abundance during different seasons and across the intertidal zone, opening opportunities for diverse future studies, ranging from ecology to algal biotechnology.

In the last decade, unprecedented arrivals of pelagic Sargassum (Sargassum influx) have been reported for the Caribbean coasts causing severe ecological and economical affectations and remarking the necessity to characterize the phenomenon. In the north coast of the Mexican Caribbean, spatial characterization of Sargassum influx was performed in terms of its abundance, species composition and chemical content using a combination of in situ sampling and remote sensing evaluations. Sargassum influx was detected within the 25 km fringe near to Quintana Roo coast in coincidence with beach-cast events during September 2018. Significant spatial variation in abundance and species composition of the stranded biomass was found for the six localities studied, which was related to the local environmental conditions. Pelagic species of Sargassum were the main component ranging from 78.1 to 99.6% of the total beach-cast (wrack) fresh biomass, whereas benthic macrophytes (seagrasses and macroalgae) were a minor component reaching up to 21% in some localities. The biochemical composition of beach-cast Sargassum resulted spatially homogeneous for most of the components analyzed; only carbon tissue content, ash metals (particularly Fe and As) and isotopic composition changed spatially. This study represents baseline information for the region. Long-term seasonal evaluations of Sargassum influx along Mexican Caribbean are required to define adequate management strategies and exploitation.

The objective was to establish possible temporal patterns in the microplastics (MPs) abundance in the water and in the intertidal sediment in an urbanized location of the Río de la Plata estuary (Argentina), in relation to environmental factors. The site was sampled monthly for a year (February 2019-January 2020). The presence of MPs was recorded, being more abundant in February in the water (110 MPs m-3) and in April in the sediment (613 MPs m-2). The types of MPs found were fibers, fragments, pellets, film and foam; while the polymers identified were polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP). Regarding the environmental variables, the predominance of wind from the NE direction was related to a greater accumulation of MPs in the sediment, while wind from the NO direction was associated with a lower abundance of MPs in the water. Also, MPs abundance was negatively related to the larger sizes of sediment particles.

Since long ago, pelagic Sargassum mats have been known to be abundant in the Sargasso Sea, where they provide habitat to diverse organisms. However, over the last few years, massive amounts of pelagic Sargassum have reached the coast of several countries in the Caribbean and West Africa, causing economic and environmental problems. Aiming for lessening the impacts of the blooms, governments and private companies remove the seaweeds from the shore, but this process results expensive. The valorization of this abundant biomass can render Sargassum tides into an economic opportunity and concurrently solve their associated environmental problems. Despite the diverse fields where algae have found applications and the relevance of this recurrent situation, Sargassum biomass remains without large scale applications. Therefore, this review aims to present the potential uses of these algae, identifying the limitations that must be assessed to effectively valorize this bioresource. Due to the constraints identified for each of the presented applications, it is concluded that a biorefinery approach should be developed to effectively valorize this abundant biomass. However, there is an urgent need for investigations focusing on holopelagic Sargassum to be able to truly valorize this seaweed.

This data article presents set-up and input data files to model a surface river plume through curvilinear nested grid in double-way mode. The hydrodynamic modelling in river deltas with intense transport processes and complex bathymetry such as the Magdalena River delta, requires a mesh grid that ease the natural river discharge into the ocean. The aforementioned may be challenging due to the numerical scheme and stability restrictions of the numerical models that difficult having efficient and effective validated simulations. This dataset files are a reference to perform analysis of the hydrodynamic river deltas, meaningful for optimizing time and resources, easing the planning of measurement campaigns what reduce risks of the personnel and instrumentation during equipment deployment and field work .The application of the set-up and input data files of this data article is shown in Rueda-Bayona et al. [1].
ABSTRACT
This article contains the set-up and input files of the implementation of Delft3D model to determine extreme hydrodynamic forces performed in Rueda-Bayona et al. [1]. The model was configured with a multidomain grid using double-way communication between the hydrodynamic and wave module. The multidomain grids solve faster than single and nested grids because require less grid points to calculate. Also, the double-way communication between the hydrodynamic and wave modules allows to consider the non-linear interactions of wind, waves, tides and currents. Because there are no modelling examples related to multidomain grids in the open access official web site of Delft3d model, this data contributes to increase the availability information of this necessity. Finally, the files of this article are ready to be run in the Delft3D model to perform a sensitivity test recommended in Rueda-Bayona et al. [1].
ABSTRACT
Satellite and atmospheric model fields are used to describe the wind forcing, surface ocean circulation, temperature and chlorophyll-a pigment concentrations along the coast of southern Chile in the transition region between 38° and 46°S. Located inshore of the bifurcation of the eastward South Pacific Current into the equatorward Humboldt and the poleward Cape Horn Currents, the region also includes the Chiloé Inner Sea and the northern extent of the complex system of fjords, islands and canals that stretch south from near 42°S. The high resolution satellite data reveal that equatorward currents next to the coast extend as far south as 48°-51°S in spring-summer. They also display detailed distributions of forcing from wind stress and wind stress curl near the coast and within the Inner Sea. Between 38°-46°S, both winds and surface currents during 1993-2016 change directions seasonally from equatorward during summer upwelling to poleward during winter downwelling, with cooler SST and greater surface chlorophyll-a concentrations next to the coast during upwelling, opposite conditions during downwelling. Over interannual time scales during 1993-2016, there is a strong correlation between equatorial El Niño events and sea level and a moderate correlation with alongshore currents. Looking more closely at the 2014-2016 period, we find a marginal El Niño during 2014 and a strong El Niño during 2015 that connect the region to the tropics through the oceanic pathway, with some atmospheric connections through the phenomenon of atmospheric blocking (as noted by others). The period also includes a Harmful Algal Bloom of the dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella during early-2016 that occurred during a sequence of physical conditions (winds, currents and temperatures) that would favor such a bloom. The most anomalous physical condition during this specific bloom is an extreme case of atmospheric blocking that creates a long period of calm in austral autumn after strong upwelling in austral summer. The blocking is related to the 2015-2016 El Niño and an unusual coincident positive phase of the Southern Annular Mode.

AbstractOstreopsis cf. ovata is a toxic epiphytic dinoflagellate widely distributed in warm waters that often co-occur with species of the genera Coolia, Fukuyoa, Gambierdiscus and Prorocentrum. We investigated a strain isolated from the coast of Ubatuba, Brazil (Southwest Atlantic Ocean) by light and epifluorescence microscopies; we also report molecular data based on the LSU rDNA and ITS markers. Cells were 35-65 µm in the dorso-ventral diameter and 20-40 µm wide. We obtained the sequence of a ~1 900 base pair region of the rRNA gene cistron. In the LSU rDNA phylogeny, the sequences under the names O. ovata and O. cf. ovata branched into three clades. The ITS marker showed greater resolving power and the sequences of O. ovata/O. cf. ovata split into five clades. Our ITS sequence branched in a clade with sequences of strains from the Mediterranean Sea, European Atlantic coasts, subtropical NE Atlantic, other sequences from Brazil at Rio de Janeiro, and a few sequences from Japan. The cell dimensions and thecal plate arrangement were under the variability range reported in other ocean regions. Our observations confirm O. cf. ovata as the most commonly recorded species of Ostreopsis in the SW Atlantic Ocean. Ostreopsis cf. ovata co-occurred with Coolia malayensis in Brazil and Asia, but it has been commonly reported from the Mediterranean Sea, where C. malayensis has not yet been recorded; while Coolia malayensis has been reported from the Caribbean Sea, but not O. ovata. With the current knowledge, it is difficult to understand the factors that determine the biogeography of the tropical epiphytic dinoflagellates. Rev. Biol. Trop. 65 (3): 1022-1032. ResumenOstreopsis cf. ovata es un dinoflagelado tóxico epifítico de amplia distribución en aguas cálidas, que a menudo coincide con especies de los géneros Coolia, Fukuyoa, Gambierdiscus y Prorocentrum. Investigamos una cepa aislada en la costa de Ubatuba, Brasil (Atlántico sudoccidental) mediante microscopía óptica y de epifluorescencia. Obtuvimos una secuencia de una región de unos 1 900 pares de bases del cistrón del gen del ARN ribosómico. Las células tenían 35-65 µm de diámetro dorso-ventral y 20-40 µm de ancho. En la filogenia del marcador LSU rADN, las secuencias con los nombres O. ovata and O. cf. ovata se sitúan en tres grupos. El marcador ITS mostraba un mayor poder resolutivo y las secuencias de O. ovata/O. cf. ovata se separan en cinco grupos. Nuestra secuencia ITS se sitúa en un grupo con secuencias de cepas procedentes del Mar Mediterráneo, costas europeas Atlánticas, Atlántico subtropical nororiental, otras secuencias procedentes de Río de Janeiro en Brasil, y algunas secuencias de Japón. Las dimensiones celulares y la disposición de las placas tecales se sitúan en el rango de variabilidad descrito en otras regiones oceánicas. Nuestras observaciones confirman a O. cf. ovata como la especie más comúnmente registrada de Ostreopsis en el Atlántico sudoccidental. Ostreopsis cf. ovata coindice con Coolia malayensis en Brasil y Asia. Ostreopsis cf. ovata ha sido comúnmente encontrada en el Mar Mediterráneo, donde C. malayensis aún no ha sido registrada. Coolia malayensis has sido registrada en el Mar Caribe, donde O. ovata aún no ha sido encontrada. Es difícil comprender los factores que determinan la biogeografía de los dinoflagelados epífitos tropicales, a partir del conocimiento actual.
ABSTRACT
In summer 2014, a toxic Karenia brevis bloom (red tide) occurred in the NE Gulf of Mexico, during which vertical migration of K. brevis has been observed from glider measurements. The current study shows that satellite observations from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) can capture changes in surface reflectance and chlorophyll concentration occurring within 2h, which may be attributed this K. brevis vertical migration. The argument is supported by earlier glider measurements in the same bloom, by the dramatic changes in the VIIRS-derived surface chlorophyll, and by the consistency between the short-term reflectance changes and those reported earlier from field-measured K. brevis vertical migration. Estimates using the quasi-analytical algorithm also indicate significant increases in both total absorption coefficient and backscattering coefficient in two hours. The two observations in a day from a single polar-orbiting satellite sensor are thus shown to be able to infer phytoplankton vertical movement within a short timeframe, a phenomenon difficult to capture with other sensors as each sensor can provide at most one observation per day, and cross-sensor inconsistency may make interpretation of merged-sensor data difficult. These findings strongly support geostationary satellite missions to study short-term bloom dynamics.

Prorocentrum mexicanum and P. rhathymum are toxicologically important dinoflagellates, but their relationship is not well defined. We investigated strains from Puerto Rico and Brazil by light and scanning electron microscopies. We provide molecular data from a strain isolated near the type locality of P. rhathymum, and the first morphological and molecular data from the South Atlantic Ocean. The rRNA gene (rDNA) sequences of the Puerto Rican and Brazilian strains were identical, and their morphologies fit the description of P. rhathymum. In the molecular phylogenies, the globally distributed populations under the names P. mexicanum and P. rhathymum are intermixed and branched together, except for several divergent strains from Florida and Cuba. We examined the original descriptions and iconotypes of the species Prorocentrum maximum, P. brochii, P. mexicanum, and P. rhathymum. We conclude that P. maximum sensu Schiller's figure 41a corresponds to the earlier description of this species; the split of P. mexicanum and P. rhathymum was based on a misidentification because P. mexicanum sensu Cortés-Altamirano & Sierra-Beltrán corresponds to P. texanum var. cuspidatum; and P. rhathymum is a junior synonym of P. mexicanum. Several Floridian and Cuban strains correspond to a new species, which we describe as Prorocentrum steidingerae sp. nov.

At the coastal zone sediments, water and organisms interact intensely. At equatorial tidal-dominated coast mangroves are abundant. These areas are well-known for their ecological importance. Considering the mangroves of Atlantic South America, the mangrove crab, Ucides cordatus has ecological and economic prominence. High densities of this crab are found on the Amazon coast. This study investigates the sediment distribution of the Bragança mangrove area (Amazon coast, Brazil) and its correlations with vegetation and mangrove crab distribution. Sediments of 47 sites, as well as crabs from sites with different sediment and vegetation, were sampled. Results show that surface sediment of the area is mainly composed by silt (59%), with 21% sand and 20% clay. Variations in sorting and skewness are the product of local variations in clay and sand content. The vegetation type was significantly correlated to mangrove crab characteristics, abundance and weight/size. Sediment characteristics are also substantially different according to the vegetation type. Areas where Avicennia germinans prevails have more sand and clay than areas of Rizophora mangle, in which silt is dominant and crabs were significantly heavier. The present results have showed that the distribution of sediments, crabs and vegetation at mangrove areas are strongly correlated. Thus, they should be studied in conjunction.(AU)

Estas áreas são conhecidas por sua importância ecológica. No caso dos manguezais da costa atlântica da América do Sul o caranguejo-uçá Ucides cordatus (Linnaeus, 1763) se destaca por sua relevância ecológica e econômica, sendo que altas densidades deste organismo são encontradas na zona costeira amazônica. O presente estudo investiga a distribuição de sedimentos nos manguezais de Bragança (costa Amazônica, Brasil) e suas correlações com a vegetação e a distribuição do caranguejo-uçá. Quarenta e sete amostras de sedimento foram avaliadas, assim como caranguejos de 8 destas áreas foram coletados, onde o tipo dominante de vegetação foi também identificado. Os resultados demonstram que os sedimentos superficiais, assim como no extrato 0,8 a 1 m de profundidade, na área são principalmente compostos por silte (59%), incluindo em média 21% de areia e 20% de argila. O tipo de vegetação predominante foi significativamente correlacionado com a abundância e tamanho/peso dos caranguejos. As características sedimentares também foram substancialmente diferentes dependendo da vegetação. Áreas dominadas por Avicennia germinans tiveram mais areia e argila que as áreas dominadas por Rizophora mangle, onde a fração silte prevalece grandemente e os caranguejos eram significativamente maiores e mais abundantes. The Black Brant is a common inhabitant of the Western Artic American tundra, which migrates to Southern Pacific coasts during the winter season. Approximately, 31 000 birds (31%) constitute the Mexican population of Brants at Guerrero Negro, Ojo de Liebre, and Exportadora de Sal lagoon complex; nevertheless, there is little information about the distribution patterns and zone usage. At Guerrero Negro Lagoon (GNL), Ojo de Liebre Lagoon (OLL, both natural sites), and at Exportadora de Sal (ESSA, artificial site) we determined by monthly censuses (from November 2006 to April 2007, 08:00-16:00h) and observed: (1) season and site effects on population structure (age groups), and (2) the tide level relationship with the abundance and proportion of feeding birds. Within a total of 150 observation hours and 98 birds, our results showed a general 0.68 proportion of adults, that was higher in winter than in spring. The statistics analysis showed no effects by site on the proportion of feeding birds, but we observed a temporal decrease at ESSA and at GNL. In contrast the proportion of feeding birds at OLL was constant. We observed an increase in the juveniles between winter and spring. This increase is related with the differential migration, which mentions that the juveniles are the last to leave the wintering area. In winter the relations of the tide level with the abundance of Brant were: direct at ESSA, inverse at OLL and no relation found at GNL. In spring, no relation was observed in the sites. The proportion of Brants feeding at OLL (the site with the higher abundance) was independent of the tide level. This is related with two possible behaviors of the geese: (1) they can move through the lagoon and take advantage of the tidal lag, which is up to four hours; and (2) they can modify their feeding strategies, more on floating eelgrass (Zostera marina).
En el complejo lagunar Guerrero Negro-Ojo de Liebre-Exportadora de Sal inverna el 31% de la población de Ganso de collar (Branta bernicla nigricans) que utiliza México (31 000 aves en promedio). Nosotros realizamos censos de punto mensuales (noviembre 2006 a abril 2007) en tres sitios para determinar: (1) los efectos de la época del año y del sitio en la estructura poblacional (grupos de edad) y (2) la relación del nivel de marea con la abundan- cia y la proporción de aves alimentándose. La proporción general de adultos fue de 0.68. Esta proporción fue mayor en invierno que en primavera. Por sitio en LGN y ESSA disminuyó y en LOL se mantuvo constante. El incremento de aves inmaduras entre el invierno y la primavera se relaciona con su partida primaveral tardía. La alimentación del Ganso de collar en LOL (el sitio de mayor abundancia) fue independiente del nivel de marea, lo que se puede relacionar con dos conductas: (1) que las aves se muevan a lo largo de la laguna, para aprovechar el desfase, de hasta cuatro horas en el nivel de marea o (2) que modifiquen sus estrategias de alimentación, para consumir el pasto flotante.

La Bahía de Tumaco es un territorio donde desembocan ocho ríos en 27 bocanas, y los principales son el Mira y el Patía. De igual forma, es una bahía que no cuenta con un sistema de saneamiento básico adecuado, y allí se vierten directamente los desechos sin ningún tipo de tratamiento. Por esto se realizó un estudio en las aguas marinas de la Bahía de Tumaco en seis estaciones seleccionadas que presentan diferentes características, en el período comprendido entre marzo, junio y septiembre del año 2010. El número total de muestras analizadas fue de 36. Se determinó la distribución espacio temporal del indicador microbiológico de contaminación fecal (Enterococos), y adicionalmente se realizaron mediciones de los parámetros fisicoquímicos (salinidad y nutrientes) en cada sitio de muestreo. Las mayores concentraciones se encontraron en las estaciones (E23 y E26) de mayor influencia de aguas continentales y en la época húmeda y de transición (húmeda a seca). De igual forma, estas estaciones en los meses de marzo y junio se encontraron por fuera de los valores permitidos por la Organización Mundial de la Salud (40 UFC/100 mL). Se observó relación directa decreciente entre la abundancia de Enterococos y la salinidad, pero no con nutrientes (NH4+, NO2- y NO3-). Dado lo observado, es importante vigilar la calidad del agua de la bahía, la cual constituye una fuente potencial de riesgo para el desarrollo de las activadas económicas de la población tumaqueña.
Eight rivers empty into 27 estuaries in the area of Tumaco Bay. The most significant are Mira and Patía. The bay does not have an appropriate basic sanitation system, and untreated wastes are discharged directly into it. For this reason, a study was conducted of Tumaco Bay marine waters at six stations exhibiting different features in the months of March, June and September 2010. The total number of samples analyzed was 36. Determination was made of the spatio-temporal distribution of the fecal contamination microbiological indicator (Enterococci), and physical-chemical parameters (salinity and nutrients) were measured at each sampling site. The highest concentrations were found at Stations E23 and E26, where the influence of continental waters is greater, in the wet and transition (dry to wet) seasons. In the months of March and June, these stations lay outside the limits established by the World Health Organization (40 UFC/100 mL). A direct decreasing relationship was found between the abundance of Enterococci and salinity, but not with respect to nutrients (NH4+, NO2- y NO3-). Given the above findings, it is important to keep watch on the quality of the water in the bay, for it may pose a risk to the economic activities carried out by the Tumaco population.

Recent reports have shown an increase in potentially harmful phytoplankton in Santos bay (Southeastern Brazilian Coast), located in a highly urbanised estuarine complex. Prediction of blooms is, thus, essential but the phytoplankton community structure in very dynamic regions is difficult to determine. In the present work, we discriminate bloom forming microphytoplankton dominance and their relationship to physical and meteorological variables to look for patterns observed in different tides and seasons. Comparing 8 distinct situations, we found five scenarios of dominance that could be related to winds, tides and rainfall: i) Surfers, diatoms occurring during high surf zone energies; ii) Sinkers, represented by larger celled diatoms during spring tide, after periods of high precipitation rates; iii) Opportunistic mixers, composed of chain forming diatoms with small or elongate cells occurring during neap tides; iv) Local mixers, microplanktonic diatoms and dinoflagellates which occurred throughout the 298 sampling stations; and v) Mixotrophic dinoflagellates, after intense estuarine discharges. Results suggest alterations in the temporal patterns for some bloom-forming species, while others appeared in abundances above safe limits for public health. This approach can also illustrate possible impacts of changes in freshwater discharge in highly urbanised estuaries.
Estudos recentes na baía de Santos (sudeste do Brasil), localizada em um sistema estuarino altamente urbanizado, mostraram o aumento de espécies fitoplanctônicas potencialmente nocivas. Apesar da importância da previsão das florações algais nocivas, é difícil determinar a estrutura da comunidade fitoplanctônica em ambientes extremamente dinâmicos. O presente estudo analisa florações dominadas pelo microfitoplâncton e sua relação com variáveis físicas e meteorológicas, a fim de determinar padrões associados às marés e às estações do ano. Foram comparadas oito situações e obtidos cinco cenários de dominância relacionados aos ventos, marés e pluviosidade: i) Surfers, diatomáceas associadas à zona de surfe, de alta energia; ii) Sinkers, diatomáceas de tamanho grande que ocorrem nas marés de sizígia, depois de períodos de alta pluviosidade; iii) Opportunistic mixers, diatomáceas pequenas ou alongadas, formadoras de cadeia, que ocorrem durante períodos de quadratura; iv) Local mixers, diatomáceas e dinoflagelados microplanctônicos que foram abundantes em todas as 298 estações amostradas, e v) Mixotrophic dinoflagellates, que ocorrem após intensas descargas estuarinas. Os resultados sugerem uma alteração no padrão temporal de algumas espécies formadoras de florações, enquanto outras apresentaram abundâncias superiores aos valores seguros para a saúde publica. Esta abordagem ilustra também os possíveis impactos de variações na descarga de água doce em estuários altamente eutrofizados.

The paper is a concise answer to the question; it might go halfway towards satisfying the questioners, but not more than halfway. This paper identifies the uniqueness of mangrove ecosystems in that they are created and sustained by a small number of rooted vascular plants in the intertidal area of the tropics. In addition to being a marginal ecosystem, a mangrove is unique in that, as an ecosystem it has various interactions with other ecosystems, both adjoining and remote in space and time. Another unique feaure of mangroves is that, unlike most marginal ecosystems, they are highly productive and dynamic. Healthy mangrove ecosystems also have the peculiar ability to immobilize heavy metals.
