ABSTRACT

Subclinical Mastitis (SCM) is caused by several factors associated with the interaction of the individual cow, cow management, and the environment. The aim of this study was to assess the breed and non-genetic risk factors on the prevalence of SCM in cows from the dual-purpose livestock system on the floodplain of Arauca, Colombian Orinoquia. Milk samples were taken from the individual mammary quarters of 481 cows representing 28 different farms where the electrical conductivity (EC) test applied. To determine the factors associated with SCM, a multiple logistic regression analysis was used. The response variable was the SCM presence (1), or absence (0) obtained with the EC test. Breed was included as a genetic risk factor, and as non- genetic risk factors: number of cows in production, daily milk production, lactation month, cow age, climatic period, body condition, and calving number. The factors that were significantly associated with the SCM presence were body condition, climatic period, and breed (p < 0.05). Odds ratio (OR) analysis of significant effects indicates that for each unit increase in body condition, the OR of having animals with SCM is reduced by 71%. In the dry period the OR of animals with SCM increases by 150% compared to the rainy period. Composite breeds reduce the OR of SCM animals by 73%, compared with Indicus-predominance animals. In this study, the occurrence of SCM in extensive management systems in Arauca, Colombian Orinoquia, is determined by the risk factors of breed, climatic period, and body condition.

ABSTRACT

Our study quantifies venom production in nine Mexican coral snake species (Micrurus), encompassing 76 specimens and 253 extractions. Noteworthy variations were observed, with M. diastema and M. laticollaris displaying diverse yields, ranging from 0.3 mg to 59 mg. For animals for which we have length data, there is a relationship between size and venom quantity. Twenty-eight percent of the observed variability in venom production can be explained by snake size, suggesting that other factors influence the amount of obtained venom. These findings are pivotal for predicting venom effects and guiding antivenom interventions. Our data offer insights into Micrurus venom yields, laying the groundwork for future research and aiding in medical response strategies. This study advances understanding coral snake venom production, facilitating informed medical responses to coral snake bites.

ABSTRACT

Introducción: los puentes intramiocárdicos son una modificación anatómica de la circulación coronaria que consisten en secciones anormales en el espesor del miocardio que al formar segmentos tunelizados e incorporarse al epicardio, provocan un ordeñamiento vascular llamado fenómeno de Milking durante la compresión sistólica extrínseca, el cual es responsable de las manifestaciones clínicas y las alteraciones electrocardiográficas. Se describe un caso clínico con el objetivo de comunicar a la comunidad científica las características clínicas, eléctricas y coronariográficas de una paciente con síndrome coronario agudo con bloqueo trifascicular y fenómeno de Milking por puente intramiocárdico. Caso clínico: mujer de56 años, con antecedentes de hipertensión arterial, obesidad e historia de ingresos frecuentes por episodios de angina inestables; fue admitida por angina inestable aguda más bloqueo trifascicular y se confirmó puente intramiocárdico en el segmento medio distal de la arteria descendente anterior izquierda. La optimización de la terapia antiisquémica se basó en Carvedilol, previa implantación de marcapaso permanente. Discusión: los puentes intramiocárdicos causan reducción dinámica de la luz del vaso epicárdico coronario y cuando resulta mayor del 50% condiciona el fenómeno de Milking, el cual es más frecuente en los segmentos medio y distal de la arteria descendente anterior izquierda, su evolución es favorable y responden a la terapéutica con ß bloqueadores de forma adecuada. Conclusiones: la correlación diagnóstica facilitó la aplicación de una conducta invasiva con estimulación transvenosa permanente que permitió iniciar tratamiento betabloqueante lo cual no hubiera sido posible por el trastorno de la conducción intraventricular.


Introduction: Intramyocardial bridges are an anatomical modification of the coronary circulation consisting of abnormal sections in the thickness of the myocardium that, when forming tunnel segments and incorporating into the epicardium, cause vascular milking, the so-called milking phenomenon, during extrinsic systolic compression, which is responsible for the clinical manifestations and electrocardiographic alterations. A clinical case is described with the aim of providing the scientific community with the clinical, electrical and coronary angiographic characteristics of a patient with acute coronary syndrome with trifascicular block and milking phenomenon due to intramyocardial bridging. Case Report: A 56-year-old woman with a history of hypertension, obesity, and frequent admissions for episodes of unstable angina was admitted for acute unstable angina plus trifascicular block and intramyocardial bridging was confirmed in the distal middle segment of the left anterior descending artery. Optimization of anti-ischemic therapy was based on carvedilol after implantation of a permanent pacemaker. Discussion: Intramyocardial bridges cause a dynamic reduction of the coronary epicardial vessel lumen and when it is greater than 50% it causes a milking phenomenon, which is more frequent in the middle and distal segments of the left anterior descending artery, its evolution is favorable and responds adequately to ß-blocker therapy. Conclusions: The diagnostic correlation facilitated the application of an invasive approach with permanent transvenous stimulation, allowing the initiation of beta-blocker treatment, which would not have been possible due to the intraventricular conduction disorder.


Introdução: As pontes intramiocárdicas são uma modificação anatómica da circulação coronária constituída por secções anómalas na espessura do miocárdio que, ao formarem segmentos em túnel e ao incorporarem-se no epicárdio, provocam a ordenha vascular, o chamado fenómeno de ordenha, durante a compressão sistólica extrínseca, responsável pelas manifestações clínicas e alterações electrocardiográficas. Descreve-se um caso clínico como objetivo de dar a conhecer à comunidade científica as características clínicas, eléctricas e coronariográficas de um doente com síndrome coronário agudo com bloqueio trifascicular e fenómeno de milking por bridging intramiocárdico. Relato de Caso: Mulher de 56 anos, com antecedentes de hipertensão arterial, obesidade e internamentos frequentes por episódios de angina instável, foi internada por angina aguda instável com bloqueio trifascicular e confirmação de ponte intramiocárdica no segmento médio distal da artéria descendente anterior. A otimização da terapêutica anti-isquémica foi baseada no carvedilol após implantação de pacemaker definitivo. Discussão: As pontes intramiocárdicas provocam uma redução dinâmica do lúmen do vaso epicárdico coronário e quando esta é superior a 50% provoca um fenómeno de ordenha, mais frequente nos segmentos médio e distal da artéria descendente anterior, a sua evolução é favorável e responde adequadamente à terapêutica com ß-bloqueantes. Conclusões: A correlação diagnóstica facilitou a aplicação de uma abordagem invasiva com estimulação transvenosa permanente, permitindo o início do tratamento com beta-bloqueadores, o que não teria sido possível devido ao distúrbio de condução intraventricular.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to assess the environmental and breed risk factors associated with the prevalence of subclinical mastitis (SCM) in cows in the dual-purpose livestock system of Arauca, Colombian Orinoquia. Milk samples were taken from 1924 mammary quarters, corresponding to 481 cows on 28 different farms, and the California Mastitis Test (CMT) was applied. Risk factors associated with SCM were determined using multiple logistic regression analysis. The response variable was the presence (1) or absence (0) of SCM. Breed was included as a genetic risk factor, and daily milk production, number of cows in production, lactation month, calving number, cow age, climatic period, and body condition were included as environmental risk factors. The analysis of the odds ratio (OR) of significant effects indicated that the factors significantly associated with the presence of SCM were the number of cows (OR = 2.29; p = 0.005), milk production (OR = 0.88; p = 0.045), and the Taurus-Indicus breeds (OR = 1.79; p = 0.009) and composite breed (OR = 3.95; p = 0.005). In this study, the occurrence of SCM was determined by the following risk factors: number of cows, milk production, and breed. Likewise, the highest prevalence seemed to occur on farms with less technological development and sanitary management of producers from the lowest socioeconomic stratum.

ABSTRACT

Background and Aim: Bovine mastitis is one of the most costly and prevalent diseases in dairy herds, which can be prevented and controlled through proper milking practices, diagnosis, and elimination of chronic animals, among others. Contagious pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus and environmental pathogens such as Escherichia coli and Klebsiella spp. can affect cows and milk for human consumption, generating a public health risk. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of herds with somatic cell count (SCC) ≥200,000 cells/mL, S. aureus, E. coli, and Klebsiella spp., in bulk tank milk (BTM) and its associated risk factors in Colombian dairy cow herds. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional probabilistic study was carried out in 150 dairy herds located in the north of the Antioquia province. A single visit per herd was conducted, during which three BTM samples were aseptically collected. General data and milking practices were collected through an epidemiological survey applied in each herd. Results: The prevalence of S. aureus, E. coli, and Klebsiella spp. were 14% (21/150), 2% (3/150), and 8% (12/150), respectively. Moreover, 95% of the herds presented an SCC of ≥200,000 cells/mL. Practices such as in-paddock milking, change of milker during the last month, use of disposable gloves, and hand disinfection were associated with increased prevalence of S. aureus, whereas proper dipping was a protective factor. Proper washing and disinfection of the milking machine, use of chlorinated disinfectants for hand hygiene, and use of disposable gloves decreased the prevalence of E. coli and Klebsiella spp. Bulk tank SCC increased in herds with 30-60 milking cows, herds with >60 milking cows, and herds with a change of milker during the last month. Hand disinfection and dipping decreased the SCC. Conclusion: Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, and Klebsiella spp. were prevalent in BTM from dairy cow herds. The risk of S. aureus isolation was higher in herds with an in-paddock milking system. The risk of E. coli and Klebsiella spp. isolation were higher in herds with >60 milking cows, with a change of milker during the last month. Processes such as avoiding changing the milker and greater control in medium and large herds could improve the SCC in BTM.

ABSTRACT

The number of dairy farms adopting automatic milking systems (AMS) has considerably increased around the world aiming to reduce labor costs, improve cow welfare, increase overall performance, and generate a large amount of daily data, including production, behavior, health, and milk quality records. In this context, this study aimed to (1) estimate genomic-based variance components for milkability traits derived from AMS in North American Holstein cattle based on random regression models; and (2) derive and estimate genetic parameters for novel behavioral indicators based on AMS-derived data. A total of 1,752,713 daily records collected using 36 milking robot stations and 70,958 test-day records from 4,118 genotyped Holstein cows were used in this study. A total of 57,600 SNP remained after quality control. The daily-measured traits evaluated were milk yield (MY, kg), somatic cell score (SCS, score unit), milk electrical conductivity (EC, mS), milking efficiency (ME, kg/min), average milk flow rate (FR, kg/min), maximum milk flow rate (FRM, kg/min), milking time (MT, min), milking failures (MFAIL), and milking refusals (MREF). Variance components and genetic parameters for MY, SCS, ME, FR, FRM, MT, and EC were estimated using the AIREMLF90 software under a random regression model fitting a third-order Legendre orthogonal polynomial. A threshold Bayesian model using the THRGIBBS1F90 software was used for genetically evaluating MFAIL and MREF. The daily heritability estimates across days in milk (DIM) ranged from 0.07 to 0.28 for MY, 0.02 to 0.08 for SCS, 0.38 to 0.49 for EC, 0.45 to 0.56 for ME, 0.43 to 0.52 for FR, 0.47 to 0.58 for FRM, and 0.22 to 0.28 for MT. The estimates of heritability (± SD) for MFAIL and MREF were 0.02 ± 0.01 and 0.09 ± 0.01, respectively. Slight differences in the genetic correlations were observed across DIM for each trait. Strong and positive genetic correlations were observed among ME, FR, and FRM, with estimates ranging from 0.94 to 0.99. Also, moderate to high and negative genetic correlations (ranging from -0.48 to -0.86) were observed between MT and other traits such as SCS, ME, FR, and FRM. The genetic correlation (± SD) between MFAIL and MREF was 0.25 ± 0.02, indicating that both traits are influenced by different sets of genes. High and negative genetic correlations were observed between MFAIL and FR (-0.58 ± 0.02) and MFAIL and FRM (-0.56 ± 0.02), indicating that cows with more MFAIL are those with lower FR. The use of random regression models is a useful alternative for genetically evaluating AMS-derived traits measured throughout the lactation. All the milkability traits evaluated in this study are heritable and have demonstrated selective potential, suggesting that their use in dairy cattle breeding programs can improve dairy production efficiency in AMS.

ABSTRACT

Does the silvopastoral system (SPS) promote a satisfactory thermal environment for dairy cows to perform their natural behaviors and perform a suitable thermoregulatory function? To answer this, peer-reviewed articles, written in English and evaluating the effects of silvopastoral systems on thermal environment, dairy cows' behavior, and physiology were used in this systematic review; additionally, a bibliometric approach was performed. Web of Science and Google Scholar were used to compile the literature. The resulting articles (1448) underwent a 4-step appraisal process and resulted in 19 articles that fitted our inclusion criteria. Microclimate variables and thermal comfort indicators were the most researched topics (discussed in 89% of studies); 47% of studies addressed cattle behavior and 36% physiological responses. Our review highlights different benefits of silvopastoral systems for grazing dairy cows. For example, the SPS provides a more comfortable thermal environment than treeless pasture, which increases feeding behaviors; furthermore, dairy cows in SPS show lower drinking events, surface temperature, and respiratory rate than cows raised in treeless pasture. However, for nine of the variables related to cows' behavior (e.g., resting, rumination) and physiology responses (e.g., internal temperature), the results of the studies were unclear. Furthermore, behaviors associated with lying down (e.g., idling and rumination) and milk production in SPS were explored only in six and two studies, respectively. These findings provide consistent evidence that the silvopastoral systems are beneficial to thermal comfort of dairy cows; nonetheless, the effect on cows' behavioral and physiological responses is still scarce and unclear.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to evaluate the seasonal effect of months of the year upon the physiological and productive responses of crossbred dairy cows raised in an Amazonian climate. Twenty lactating cows were evaluated, fed on Brachiaria decumbens pasture, with free access to water and mineral supplementation. Data from climate variables air temperature (AT), relative humidity (RH), rainfall (RA) and temperature and humidity index (THI) were recorded dur ing the months of January to April 2019. The physiological data collected were: respiratory rate (RR, mov/min), heart rate (HR, beats/min), rectal temperature (RT, ºC), udder surface temperature (UST, ºC), body surface temperature (BST, ºC), dorsum surface temperature (DST, ºC), front surface temperature (FST, ºC) and rear shin temperature (RST). Milk production (MP) was also measured. There was a significant difference (P<0.05) of RST and RR with values ranging from 34.8 to 35.5°C and 32.0 to 36.2 mov/min, respectively. There were no significant difference (P>0.05) for BST, and the values for MP and THI were 3.8; 3.8; 4.6; 4.1 kg and 77.7; 79.7; 80.6; 80.1, respectively. It was concluded that there was a seasonal effect of the months of the year evaluated on the respiratory rate of animals, however, it did not change the MP and the THI. The Amazon environment is conducive to causing thermal stress in lactating cows raised on pasture, requiring the use of shading to facilitate the ability of these animals to dissipate heat.(AU)


O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar os efeitos sazonais dos meses do ano sobre as respostas fisiológicas e produtivas de vacas leiteiras mestiças criadas em clima amazônico. Foram avaliadas 20 vacas lactantes, alimentadas com pasto de Brachiaria decumbens, com acesso livre a água e suplementação mineral. Foram registrados dados das variáveis climáticas temperatura do ar (TA), umidade relativa do ar (UR), precipitação pluviométrica (PP) e índice de temperatura e Umidade (ITU) durante os meses de janeiro a abril de 2019. Os dados fisiológicos coletados foram: frequência respiratória (FR, mov/min), frequência cardíaca (FC, bat./min), temperatura retal (TR, ºC), temperatura superficial do úbere (TSU, ºC), temperatura superfície corporal (TSC, ºC), temperatura superficial do dorso (TSD, ºC), temperatura superficial da fronte (TSF, ºC) e temperatura superficial da canela (TSCA, °C). Também foi mensurada a produção de leite (PL, kg). Houve diferença significativa (P<0,05) da TSCA e FR com valores variando de 34,8 a 35,5°C e 32,0 a 36,2 mov/min, respectivamente. Não houve diferença significativa (P>0,05) para TSC e os valores observados para PL e ITU foram 3,8; 3,8; 4,6; 4,1 kg e 77,7; 79,7; 80,6; 80,1, respectivamente. Houve efeito sazonal dos meses avaliados sobre a taxa respiratória dos animais, no entanto, isso não alterou a PL nem o ITU. O ambiente amazônico é propício a causar estresse térmico em vacas lactantes mantidas a pasto, sendo necessário o uso de sombreamento para facilitar a capacidade de dissipação de calor corporal desses animais.(AU)

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of milking hygiene practices, herd size, water hardness, and temperature-humidity index (THI) on the physicochemical and microbiological characteristics of raw milk, and standard plate count (SPC) in milking machines of dairy farms in the central region of Mexico. Data were collected from fifty-three dairy farms during one year. The evaluated effects included milking hygiene conditions (good, medium, poor), herd size (1-50, 51-100, 101-150, ≥151 heads), water hardness (soft or moderately hard), and THI (comfortable or stressful). The increase in milking hygiene produced greater milk yield (MY) and energy corrected milk (ECM) but lower protein content, and decreased the individual bacterial count (IBC) and somatic cell count (SCC). The MY, ECM, protein content, IBC, and SCC were higher on bigger farms. The use of soft water reduced MY, IBC, and SCC, but improved fat, lactose, total solids (TS), and non-fat solids (NFS). Heat stress negatively affected fat, protein, TS, NFS, acidity, freezing point (FP), SCC, and methylene blue dye reduction test. Poor milking hygiene contributes to higher SPC in milking machine parts. Water hardness and THI did not affect SPC in all milking machine parts. Proper milking hygiene practices, larger herd size, softer water, lower THI, and adequate cleaning and disinfection of the milking machine parts benefits the physicochemical and microbiological quality of the milk.

ABSTRACT

Biofilms in milking equipment on dairy farms have been associated with failures in cleaning and sanitizing protocols. These biofilms on milking equipment can be a source of contamination for bulk tank milk and a concern for animal and public health, as biofilms can become on-farm reservoirs for pathogenic bacteria that cause disease in cows and humans. This report describes a cross-sectional study on 3 dairy farms, where hoses used to divert waste milk, transition milk, and colostrum were analyzed by culture methods and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) to assess the presence of pathogenic bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Klebsiella spp. In addition, the presence of biofilms was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy and confocal spectral microscopy. Biofilms composed of multispecies microbial communities were observed on the surfaces of all milk hoses. In two dairy farms, S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Klebsiella oxytoca were isolated from the milk hose samples collected. Cleaning and sanitation protocols of all surfaces in contact with milk or colostrum are crucial. Hoses used to collect waste milk, colostrum, and transition milk can be a source of biofilms and hence pathogenic bacteria. Waste milk used to feed calves can constitute a biosecurity issue and a source of pathogens, therefore an increased exposure and threat for the whole herd health and, potentially, for human health.

ABSTRACT

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the productive performance and grazing behavior of 25 primiparous and 44 multiparous Holstein cows in a pasture-based automatic milking system (AMS) while experiencing heat stress (defined as a temperature-humidity index [THI] ≥ 68). Productive traits were analyzed according to the THI from days 0, -1, -2, and -3 in relation to the milking day, and grazing behaviors (expressed as the percentage of daily observation time) were related to the average THI only on the day of observation. Milk yield was not associated with the THI on day 0, but a significant linear relationship was found with the THI on the three previous days, decreasing approximately 0.18 kg (primiparous) and 0.40 kg (multiparous) per THI unit increment. In contrast, for multiparous cows only, the milking frequency was positively associated with the THI on the day of evaluation but not on the previous days, increasing 0.01 milking/THI unit increments. Additionally, for each unit of THI increment, cows spent 0.14% more time standing, whereas they exhibited a decrease in grazing, lying, and ruminating behaviors time by 0.30%, 0.04%, and 0.70%, respectively, for both parities. In conclusion, milk loss was related to heat stress conditions from the previous days, but not milking frequency, which increased with the THI of the same milking day. Lower grazing, lying, and ruminating activities and greater standing behavior were observed due to heat stress.


In higher temperature conditions, dairy cows under pasture-based automatic milking systems may experience heat stress, affecting their health and productive performance. In the present study, the relationships between heat stress, measured by the temperature­humidity index (THI), productive traits, and grazing behaviors were evaluated. Cows exhibited an increase in milking frequency and their time standing, decreasing the time grazing, lying, and ruminating as the THI increased on the same day. Additionally, cows had decreased milk production when the THI increased in the previous days. Understanding how cows adjust their grazing behavior to handle changes in the environment allows for the development of management strategies designed to improve animal welfare.

ABSTRACT

During the third stage of labor, oxytocin and tranexamic acid, oxytocin and misoprostol, oxytocin and methylergometrine, or carbetocin is recommended for the prevention of postpartum hemorrhage after vaginal delivery. Intravenous oxytocin (10 IU) immediately after delivery of the neonate (after either anterior shoulder or whole-body delivery) and before delivery of the placenta is recommended. If oxytocin and tranexamic acid combination is chosen, intravenous tranexamic acid (1 g) in addition to intravenous oxytocin (10 IU) immediately after delivery of the neonate and before placental delivery is recommended. If oxytocin and misoprostol combination is chosen, sublingual misoprostol (400 µg) in addition to intravenous oxytocin (10 IU) immediately after delivery of the neonate is recommended. If there is no intravenous access or if in low-resource settings, sublingual misoprostol (400 µg) and intramuscular oxytocin (10 IU) are recommended. If oxytocin and methylergometrine combination is chosen, intramuscular methylergometrine (0.2 mg) and intravenous oxytocin (10 IU) immediately after delivery of the neonate are recommended. Single-dose intravenous or intramuscular carbetocin (100 µg) immediately after delivery of the neonate is recommended. Controlled cord traction and delayed cord clamping for approximately 60 seconds is recommended. There is insufficient evidence to support or refute umbilical cord milking, uterine massage, or nipple stimulation for the prevention of postpartum hemorrhage. Repair of first- and second-degree lacerations with continuous synthetic suture technique is recommended. No repair of first-degree lacerations if hemostatic and normal cosmesis can be considered. Repair of third-degree lacerations with end-to-end or overlap continuous synthetic suture technique is recommended. Repair of fourth-degree lacerations with delayed absorbable 4-0 or 3-0 polyglactin or chromic suture in a running fashion is recommended. The use of single-dose second-generation cephalosporin at the time of third- or fourth-degree laceration repairs can be considered. Skin-to-skin contact after delivery is recommended. There is insufficient evidence to support or refute routine cord blood gas sampling after delivery. Public cord blood banking is recommended.

ABSTRACT

The Brazilian dairy sector is important for the world agricultural production; however, it presents problems in production efficiency and milk quality, since the occurrence of mastitis in the herds can reach 47%. The present study analyzed data from a rural property with 100 lactating cows in a semi-intensive breeding system, which did not adopt adequate hygiene management for milking processes. Corrective measures were proposed, such as daily strip cup test, biweekly California Mastitis Test, formation of a new milking line, and daily pre dipping and post dipping and cleaning of teat cups. Milk samples from 10 animals with positive clinical mastitis, 10 animals with positive subclinical mastitis, and from the cooling tank were collected at one day before and 90 days after the implementation of the proposed measures and sent to a laboratory for analysis of somatic cell counting (SCC) and total bacteria counting (TBC). An increase of 17% in milk production and decreases of 64% and 40% in clinical and subclinical mastitis, respectively, were found after 90 days, with a consequent decrease in SCC and TBC. The milking duration after this period denoted an adaptation of the employees to the new procedures. The production financial yield was calculated based on the implementation costs of the adopted adequations and increases in milk production, representing a profitability increase of 10.4%. The implemented adequations were efficient for the control of mastitis and increase in milk yield and quality, resulting in a positive economic return.(AU)


O setor lácteo brasileiro possui grande relevância na produção agrícola mundial e apesar disso, ainda são encontra-dos problemas na eficiência produtiva e na qualidade do leite, onde a prevalência de mastite nos rebanhos pode chegar a 47%. Neste estudo, foram analisados dados de uma propriedade rural com 100 vacas lactantes e sistema de criação semi-intensivo, que não adotava manejo higiênico adequado na ordenha. Foram propostas medidas de correção como execução diária do teste da caneca telada e teste quinzenal do CMT, formação de nova linha de ordenha, adoção diária do pré dipping e pós dipping e higienização das teteiras. Foram coletadas amostras de leite de 10 animais positivos para mastite clínica, 10positivos para mastite subclínica e do tanque de resfriamento um dia antes e 90 dias após a implementação das novas medidas e enviadas ao laboratório para análise da CCS e CBT. Após 90 dias, houve aumento na produção de leite em 17% e redução dos índices de mastite clínica e subclínica em 64% e 40%, respectivamente, com consequente diminuição dos valores de CCS e CBT. A duração da ordenha após esse período indicou adaptação dos colaboradores aos novos procedimentos instaurados. Por fim, calculou-se o rendimento financeiro da produção baseado nos custos de implantação das correções e no aumento da produção de leite, que reverteu-se em lucratividade 10,4% maior. Conclui-se que as adequações implementadas foram eficazes no con-trole de mastite e no aumento da produtividade dos animais e da qualidade do leite, resultando em retorno econômico positivo.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The main objective of this study was to determine the effects of milking system on growth, reproduction, and milk yield and composition of East Friesiancross (Tahirova) dairy sheep that were milked in the evening during the suckling period. A total of 43 Tahirova ewes and 58 lambs were used in the present study. One of the groups was milked in the evening (evening milked; EM) before coming together with their lambs, and the other group was not (not milked in the evening; NEM). Morning milking was performed in both groups during the study. Lambs in both groups were individually weaned at the age of 60 days. There was no statistical difference between the lambs' live weight at weaning in the EM and NEM groups, determined to be 23.46 and 24.11 kg, respectively. Live weight values of lambs were similar in the groups at ages of up to 180 days. The reproductive characteristics of ewe lambs in the EM and NEM groups, having similar growth rates and a similar live weight and body condition in the first estrus stages, were also similar. The return rate and frequency of return were close in both groups of ewe lambs. Milk yield of the NEM group was significantly higher than that of the EM group before and after weaning. However, in groups with similar lactation milk yield and length, the total marketable milk yield was higher in the suckling period of the EM group. The milking system in suckling period of Tahirova ewes does not significantly affect growth, average daily gain, and reproductive characteristics. Milk yield in the NEM group before and after weaning was significantly higher than the EM group, but the total marketable milk yield was higher in the EM group.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Infrared thermography is a non-invasive diagnostic tool for early detection of subclinical mastitis in pasture-raised dairy cows. The study was conducted on eight dairy farms, in Sena Madureira, Acre, in the Western Amazon, during the rainy season. One hundred and thirteen lactating crossbred cows were monitored, with measurements performed once day before milking, from 02:00 to 06:00 in the morning. The California Mastitis Test (CMT) was subsequently applied. Data processing was performed in the R programming language and evaluated by linear models. Our results show that cow udder surface temperature by infrared thermography showed significant differences (p<0.05) between the months of the year. Cow udder temperatures of thermographic images were significantly different (p<0.05) from CMT results for animals with subclinical mastitis. CMT results showed that 45 cows (39.8%) in January, 52 cows (46%) in February and 57 cows (50.4%) in March had subclinical mastitis. Infrared thermography is a technique that can be used for the early detection of subclinical mastitis in dairy herds in a grazing system, as it detected an increase in the udder surface temperature of the same cows that were positive for CMT.


Avaliou-se a termografia infravermelha como ferramenta diagnóstica, não invasiva, para detecção precoce da mastite subclínica em vacas leiteiras criadas a pasto. O estudo foi conduzido em oito propriedades leiteiras, em Sena Madureira, Acre, na Amazônia Ocidental, durante o inverno amazônico. Foram monitoradas 113 vacas mestiças em lactação, com mensurações realizadas uma vez por dia, sempre antes da realizadas das 2h às 6h da manhã. Em seguida, realizou-se exame de Califórnia Mastitis Test-CMT. O ordenha, processamento dos dados foi feito em linguagem de programação R, os quais foram avaliados por modelos lineares. Os resultados mostram que a temperatura da superfície do úbere das vacas avaliadas com a técnica da termografia infravermelha teve diferenças significativas (P<0,05) entre os meses do ano. Constatou-se alteração na na temperatura do úbere das vacas, captada por meio das imagens termográficas, e foi i significativo (P<0,05) o resultado do teste California Mastistis Test (CMT) para os animais que se encontravam com mastite subclínica. Com base nos resultados do CMT, foi possível constatar que 45 vacas (39,8%) em janeiro, 52 vacas (46%) em fevereiro e 57 vacas (50,4%) em março se encontravam com mastite subclínica. Conclui-se que a termografia infravermelha é uma técnica que pode ser utilizada para a detecção precoce de mastite subclínica em rebanho leiteiro em sistema de pastejo, pois foi capaz de detectar aumento na temperatura superficial do úbere das vacas, que resultaram positivas no teste de CMT.

Objective: To map the available evidence on umbilical cord milking in newborns. Material and Method: Scoping Review based on the protocol proposed by the Joanna Briggs Institute. A search for full-text articles published in MEDLINE, SCOPUS, WOS and CINAHL was carried out using the following keywords: infant, newborn, umbilical cord milking, placental transfusion and umbilical cord blood. Results: The results indicated umbilical cord milking has superior benefits to the immediate cord clamping, among the main ones are higher levels of Hemoglobin, Hematocrit and Serum Ferritin, and reduction of complications in preterm newborns, such as intraventricular hemorrhage and the need for blood transfusion. When compared to delayed cord clamping, it has similar benefits, but milking is considered a faster method of placental blood transfusion. Conclusions: Umbilical cord milking has similar potential to delayed cord clamping. Therefore, it can be an alternative for obstetric nurses and midwives when delayed cord clamping cannot be performed in order to ensure the benefits of placental transfusion to the neonate.


Objetivo: Mapear la evidencia disponible sobre la ordeña del cordón umbilical en recién nacidos. Material y Método: Revisión de Alcance con base en el protocolo propuesto por el Instituto Joanna Briggs. Se realizó una búsqueda de artículos de texto completo publicados en MEDLINE, SCOPUS, WOS y CINAHL utilizando las siguientes palabras clave: lactante, recién nacidos, ordeña cordón umbilical, transfusión placentaria y sangre de cordón umbilical. Resultados: La ordeña del cordón umbilical tiene beneficios superiores al pinzamiento inmediato del cordón, entre los principales se encuentran: mayores niveles de hemoglobina, hematocrito y ferritina sérica y reducción de complicaciones en recién nacidos prematuros, tales como hemorragia intraventricular y necesidad de transfusión sanguínea. En comparación con el pinzamiento tardío del cordón, tiene beneficios similares, pero la ordeña se considera el método más rápido de transfusión de sangre placentaria. Conclusiones: La ordeña del cordón umbilical tiene potencial similar al pinzamiento tardío del cordón, por lo tanto, puede ser una alternativa para enfermeras obstétricas y parteras cuando no se puede realizar el pinzamiento tardío del cordón para asegurar los beneficios de la transfusión placentaria al neonato.

Resultados: Os resultados indicaram que a ordenha do cordão umbilical tem benefícios superiores ao clampeamento imediato do cordão, entre os principais estão: níveis mais elevados de hemoglobina, hematócrito e ferritina sérica e redução de complicações em recém-nascidos pré-termo, como hemorragia intraventricular e necessidade de transfusão sanguínea. Quando comparado ao clampeamento tardio do cordão umbilical, tem benefícios semelhantes, mas a ordenha é considerada um método mais rápido de transfusão de sangue da placenta. Conclusões: A ordenha do cordão umbilical tem potencial semelhante ao clampeamento tardio do cordão umbilical, portanto, pode ser uma alternativa às enfermeiras obstetras e parteiras quando o clampeamento tardio do cordão não pode ser executado a fim de garantir os benefícios da transfusão placentária ao neonato.

The present experiments on goats were conducted with the aim of verifying (a) whether the identity of the goat kids can affect the characteristics of milk let-down during suckling (Study 1) and (b) whether the presence of the goat kids may improve the milk let-down during hand milking (Study 2). In Study 1, 16 lactating goats with twins and 12 with single kids were used. Dams with single goat kids ejected more milk when suckling their kids at Days 5 and 20 of lactation, than when suckling aliens. Dams with twins ejected more milk when suckling their own kids than aliens only at Day 5 of lactation. Taking into account all the dams, they ejected more milk with more fat, protein, and lactose during suckling their own litter than when suckling aliens. In Study 2, when dams (n = 13) were hand milked in the presence of their own litter or in its absence, they ejected more milk with more fat, protein, and lactose than when milked in the presence of alien kids. We conclude that milk let-down in goats can be influenced by the type of stimuli applied or to which they are exposed to during suckling and milking.

This study aimed to analyze the applicability of management tools such as SWOT matrix, GUT matrix, Brainstorming, PDCA, Ishikawa diagram, and 5W2H in improving milk quality in rural properties for family labor. The survey was conducted in 18 properties in the municipality of Senador Guiomard, State of Acre, Brazil, during the period from January to December 2019. The properties were divided into two groups (treatment group-TG and control group-CG) and the data obtained through a form with 255 questions for diagnosis and analysis (LQL-GO) for somatic cell count (SCC) and total bacterial count (TBC) were tabulated in spreadsheets (Excel®) and subjected to statistical analysis by the Wilcoxon test. Nineteen weaknesses were obtained through the GUT matrix. The implementation of milking practices using tools obtained an average reduction of 31.4% for SCC and 63% for TBC in TG and a reduction of 39.3% for SCC and an increase of 33.7% for TBC in CG. Thus, the management tools applied to milk quality are capable of generating positive results (p < 0.05) in microbiological control, facilitating quick decision-making, aiming at the correction of weaknesses, and, consequently, an increase in profitability.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to investigate the potential risk factors for clinical and subclinical mastitis in smallholder dairy farms in Brazil. A prospective, repeated cross-sectional study was carried out between May 2018 and June 2019 on 10 smallholder dairy farms. Potential risk factors for subclinical and clinical mastitis at the herd and cow level were recorded through interviewing the owner and by observation. A combination of clinical udder examination and the Tamis (screened mug with a dark base) test (Tadabras Indústria e Comércio de Produtos Agrovetereinário LTDA, Bragrança Paulista, SP, Brazil) were applied to observe clinical mastitis, and the California Mastitis Test (Tadabras Indústria e Comércio de Produtos Agrovetereinário LTDA, Bragrança Paulista, SP, Brazil) was used to determine subclinical mastitis. A total of 4567 quarters were tested, 107 (2.3%) had clinical mastitis, while 1519 (33.2%) had subclinical mastitis. At the cow level, clinical mastitis risk was highest in mid-lactation (50-150 days in milk) with OR 2.62 with 95% confidence interval (CI) of 1.03-6.67, while subclinical mastitis was highest in late lactation (> 150 days in milk) with OR 2.74 (95% CI 2.05-3.63) and lower in primiparous (OR 0.54, 95% CI 0.41-0.71) than multiparous cows. At the herd level, using dry-cow treatment (OR 4.23, 95% CI 1.42-12.62) was associated with an increased risk of clinical mastitis. Milking clinical (OR 0.37, 95% CI 0.24-0.56) and subclinical cases last (OR 0.21, 95% CI 0.09-0.47) and cleaning the milking parlor regularly (OR 0.27, 95% CI 0.15-0.46) had decreased odds for subclinical mastitis, while herds with optimized feed had greater odds (OR 9.11, 95% CI 2.59-31.9). Prevalence of clinical mastitis was at its lowest at the first visit in June/July and highest at the last visit in April/June (OR 3.81, 95% CI 1.93-7.52). Subclinical mastitis also presented increased odds in the last visit (OR 2.62, 95% CI 2.0-3.36). This study has identified some risk factors for mastitis on smallholder farms but further research on more farms across more areas of Brazil is required to develop a targeted mastitis control program for smallholder farms.
