ABSTRACT

Pilonidal sinus disease is a painful disorder of the natal cleft between the buttocks. Primary treatment is by surgery but there is a high recurrence rate. Laser hair removal reduces the rate of recurrence by diminishing the number and thickness of hairs. It should be recommended along with personal hygiene measures for patients to reduce short-term and long-term recurrence of the condition.

ABSTRACT

This qualitative, participant and descriptive assistance case study shows the use of acupuncture in the complementary treatment of a patient with sacroccocygeal pilonidal cyst relapse with infectious complications in the surrounding tissues receiving medical and nursing assistance. The purpose is to identify this support in complementary health as a potential strategy to be used in the nursing care offered to the patients. It was observed that acupuncture and the multiprofessional assistance benefitted the recovery of local tissue and the combat of infection. By the time of the nursing appointment, these techniques greatly contributed for the positive combat of the disease and a better adhesion to the orientations of nursing care practitioners. Further studies and scientific research about the contributions of oriental health practices in nursing are necessary.

ABSTRACT

Pilonidal sinus disease is a common disorder that occurs in the cleavage between the buttocks and can cause discomfort and embarrassment for patients. It frequently recurs following surgery and requires time-consuming wound care. This article discusses the incidence, pathophysiology, clinical presentation and appropriate management of patients with the disease.

ABSTRACT

The wound care management of a palliative care patient with sinusitis pinoidalis is documented. The treatment is validated by the expert's opinion. There is only little evidence-based treatment of such a lesion. In our experience, photo documentation is helpful in decision-making during the treatment process. In addition, healing of larger defects seems to improve upon frequent and extensive liquid cleansing.

ABSTRACT

This article illustrates the outcomes of a 10-patient prospective case study series. The aim of the study was to evaluate the use of Urgosorb in the management of acute and chronic wounds. (Urgosorb is a dressing comprising calcium alginate fibres and hydrocolloid, and is recommended for sloughy and granulating wounds with moderate to high levels of exudate.) Parameters assessed were the effectiveness of exudate management and integrity of surrounding tissue, ease of removal, patient comfort, effectiveness of odour control and observation for any adverse reactions. Data were collected over a period of 6 weeks with weekly evaluations. Healing was not included in the study objectives as it was recognized this would be difficult on a range of highly variable wounds. Although healing was not assessed, 50% of the wounds did heal during the study period. Dressing removal was considered easy in the majority of cases, and patients experienced none, or only mild discomfort. Levels if exudate were well managed and there were no reports of any adverse events.

ABSTRACT

In out-patient care, the consideration of individual, social and family aspects of the patient acquires a special relevance because the process of convalescence has to be followed on an out-patient basis, hence making self-car even more necessary. The purpose of this paper was to elaborate a consensuated nursing care plan for patients who had undergone dermoid cyst surgery during the first week after the intervention, following the V. Henderson´s nursing model and the nursing terminology of the NANDA, NIC and NOC taxonomies. The paper also identified possible structural problems and the difficulties that were encountered during their implementation. Methodology: this study was carried out based on technological implantation and counted with the observation and participation of a group of experts (peer review). It was conducted in two phases: a) Elaboration phase of a standard plan, by consensus, based on the analysis of care plans carried out by student nurses and, b) pilot phase of the plan by applying such to 10 patients. Lastly, a nursing care plan adapted to the patient characteristics and the structure of the unit was elaborated. Results: the utilisation of a nursing model as a framework for analysis and reflection has served as guidance in the taking of nursing decisions and in the classification of the different health problems of the patients. The taxonomies of the nursing language have been useful to designate the different areas of responsibility in the care and to clarify the results criteria in the patient
