RESUMO

This study aimed to (i) investigate the potential for enhanced phytoremediation to remove contaminants from soil historically co-contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons (PHs) and heavy metals (HMs) and (ii) analyze the expression of crucial bacterial genes and whole metatranscriptomics profiles for better understanding of soil processes during applied treatment. Phytoremediation was performed using Zea mays and supported by the Pseudomonas qingdaonensis ZCR6 strain and a natural biofertilizer: meat and bone meal (MBM). In previous investigations, mechanisms supporting plant growth and PH degradation were described in the ZCR6 strain. Here, ZCR6 survived in the soil throughout the experiment, but the efficacy of PH removal from all soils fertilized with MBM reached 32 % regardless of the bacterial inoculation. All experimental groups contained 2 % (w/w) MBM. The toxic effect of this amendment on plants was detected 30 days after germination, irrespective of ZCR6 inoculation. Among the 17 genes tested using the qPCR method, only expression of the acdS gene, encoding 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid deaminase, and the CYP153 gene, encoding cytochrome P450-type alkane hydroxylase, was detected in soils. Metatranscriptomic analysis of soils indicated increased expression of methane particulated ammonia monooxygenase subunit A (pmoA-amoA) by Nitrosomonadales bacteria in all soils enriched with MBM compared to the non-fertilized control. We suggest that the addition of 2 % (w/w) MBM caused the toxic effect on plants via the rapid release of ammonia, and this led to high pmoA-amoA expression. In parallel, due to its wide substrate specificity, enhanced bacterial hydrocarbon removal in MBM-treated soils was observed. The metatranscriptomic results indicate that MBM application should be considered to improve bioremediation of soils polluted with PHs rather than phytoremediation. However, lower concentrations of MBM could be considered for phytoremediation enhancement. From a broader perspective, these results indicated the superior capability of metatranscriptomics to investigate the microbial mechanisms driving various bioremediation techniques.

The influence of broiler age on the apparent metabolizable energy (AME) and nitrogen-corrected AME (AMEn) of meat and bone meal (MBM) was investigated. A corn-soy basal diet and an experimental diet wherein 300 g/kg of the basal diet was replaced (w/w) with MBM were developed. The diets, in pellet form, were fed to six replicate cages across six age groups, namely d 1 to 7, 8 to 14, 15 to 21, 22 to 28, 29 to 35 or 36 to 42 d post-hatch. Birds were fed either a starter diet from d 1-21 or a finisher diet from d 22-35. Basal and experimental diets were introduced on d 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 and 36 with 10 (d 1-7), 8 (d 8-14) and 6 (d 15-42) birds per replicate. Total collection of excreta was carried out during the last 4 d of each age period. A linear decrease (p < 0.001) in the retention of dry matter and nitrogen was observed with advancing age. The AMEn of MBM showed a linear increase (p < 0.05), rising from 12.56 MJ/kg during d 1-7 to 13.90 MJ/kg during d 29-35, followed by a decline to 13.41 MJ/kg during d 36-42. The current findings showed that the energy utilization of MBM increased with the advancing age of broilers. Age-dependent AMEn values of MBM may need to be considered when MBM is included in feed formulations.

Laboratory testing methods to confirm the identity of meat products and eliminate food fraud regularly rely on PCR amplification of extracted DNA, with most published assays detecting mitochondrial sequences, providing sensitive presence/absence results. By targeting single-copy nuclear targets instead, relative quantification measurements are achievable, providing additional information on the proportions of meat species detected. In this Methods paper, new assays for horse, donkey, duck, kangaroo, camel, water buffalo and crocodile have been developed to expand the range of species that can be quantified, and a previously published reference assay targeting the myostatin gene has been modified to include marsupials and reptiles. The accuracy of this ratio measurement approach was demonstrated using dPCR with mixtures of meat DNA down to 0.1%. However, the limit of detection (LOD) of this approach is not just determined by the assay targets, but by the samples themselves, with food or feed ingredients and processing impacting the DNA yield and integrity. In routine testing settings, the myostatin assay can provide multiple quality control roles, including monitoring the yield and purity of extracted DNA, identifying the presence of additional meats not detected by the suite of species-specific assays and potentially estimating a sample-specific LOD based on measured copy numbers of the myostatin target. In addition to the myostatin positive control assay, a synthetic DNA reference material (RM) has been designed, containing PCR targets for beef, pork, sheep, chicken, goat, kangaroo, horse, water buffalo and myostatin, to be used as a positive template control. The availability of standardised measurement methods and associated RMs significantly improves the reliability, comparability and transparency of laboratory testing, leading to greater confidence in results.

BACKGROUND: Sustainability concerns as well as recent increases in fertilizer prices exacerbates the need to optimise the use of biowastes as fertilizers. For this reason, we investigated how different pretreatments affect the P dynamics when biofertilizers are placed in the soil. METHODS: Sewage sludge (SS), sewage sludge ash (SS-ash), meat and bone meal (MBM), and the solid fraction of biogas digestate (BGF) were pretreated with H2SO4, NaOH, and Ca(OH)2 and incubated for 2 and 12 days, respectively, in a one-dimensional reaction system for detailed studies of the interactions in the biomaterial-soil interface and the soil adjacent to the placement zone. RESULTS: Our results showed that acidification and treatment with NaOH increased the P solubility of the biomaterials. The P loss from the biomaterial layer to the soil was correlated with water-extractable P in the biomaterials (0.659) and water-extractable P in the soil (0.809). Acidification significantly increased the total amount of P depleted from the biomaterial to the soil whereas NaOH pre-treatment did not. However, for NaOH-treated SS and SS-ash, the apparent recoveries were significantly higher compared to the acidification due to a decrease in soil P sorption capacity as the soil pH increased due to residual alkalinity in the biomaterials. CONCLUSIONS: Acidification showed promising results by increasing the P solubility of all the biomaterials, and the alkalinization of SS and SS-ash with NaOH by increasing the apparent recovery in the soil. However, further studies are needed to assess the effects of these treatments on plant growth and P uptake.

Meat and bone meal (MBM), as slaughterhouse waste, is a potential biostimulating agent, but its efficiency and reliability in composting are largely unknown. To access the MBM application to the composting process of asparagus straw rice, we followed the composting process for 60 days in 220-L composters and another 180 days in 20-L buckets in treatments applied with MBM or urea. The microbial succession was investigated by high-throughput sequencing. Compared with urea treatments, MBM addition stabilized pH and extended the thermophilic phase for 7 days. The germination index of MBM treatments was 24.76% higher than that of urea treatments. MBM also promoted higher microbial diversity and shifted community compositions. Organic matter and pH were the most significant factors that influence the bacterial and fungal community structure. At the genus level, MBM enriched relative abundances of organic matter-degrading bacteria (Alterococcus) and lignocellulose-degrading fungi (Trichoderma), as well as lignocellulolytic enzyme activities. Notably, MBM addition decreased sum abundances of plant pathogenic fungi of Phaeoacremonium, Acremonium, and Geosmithia from 17.27 to 0.11%. This study demonstrated the potential of MBM as an effective additive in asparagus straw composting, thus providing insights into the development of new industrial aerobic fermentation.

Early in this century, the crisis connected to the spread of bovine spongiform encephalopathy caused a great concern related to the use of animal by-products (ABPs). According to the Commission Regulation (EU) No 1069/2009, these materials are classified in three categories according to their related risk. In 2011 Commission Regulation (EU) No 142/2011 established that meat and bone meal (MBM) and fat deriving from ABPs not intended for human consumption (category 1 and 2) are required to be permanently marked with glyceroltriheptanoate (GTH), at a minimum concentration of 250 mg kg-1 of fat, while category 3 processed animal proteins (PAPs) must not contain this compound. PAPs are bio resources, which could be used in a renewable and regenerative way in a circular economy model for a conscious usage of raw materials. The aim of this study was to provide information on GTH occurrence in MBM and, if any, in PAPs. Samples were collected from 2017 to 2021 and analysed by GC-MS. Detected non-compliant samples were exclusively of MBM category 1 and 2, probably due to the addition of an inadequate amount of GTH during the manufacturing processes. These results highlighted the importance of National Monitoring Programs as a useful tool to minimise safety related risk due to the misuse of GTH. Thus, investigating the critical points in feed supply-chain and sharing the information on its occurrence may help to improve animal and human wellness and safety.

Meat and bone meal (MBM) is a kind of animal waste with high nutritive values. Bioconversion of MBM by black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) has great potential to obtain high-quality organic fertilizers. However, limited information is available on MBM waste manipulation to enhance BSFL frass quality. In the present study, BSFL were fed with chicken MBM containing increasing levels of rice straw (CK (0%), T1 (1%), T2 (1%), and T3 (3%)). The effects of straw addition into MBM on the quality and microbial profile of BSFL frass were evaluated. Results showed that MBM amended with straw did not significantly affect the body weight of BSFL and most of the nutrients (e.g. pH, EC, TN, TP and Na) in larval frass. Compared to other treatments, T1 sample had the highest organic matter (OM) value, implying proper straw addition could increase OM contents in frass. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis showed that straw addition might enhance the decomposition of aliphatic carbons and polysaccharides during MBM digestion process. Moreover, T1 sample had the highest microbial richness and Shannon diversity indices. It was supposed that proper straw addition in MBM helped build a more balanced diet and contributed to the BSFL gut health, consequently stimulating the gut microbe-mediated substances transformation or decomposition and promoting the microbial diversity in frass. Compared to CK, straw addition had significant influence on the abundances of Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes and Fusobacteria in frass. Elements including OM, TK and Na played important roles in shaping the microbial profile of BSFL frass.

This study was conducted to determine the effect of necrotic enteritis (NE), phytase level and meat and bone meal (MBM) processing on bone mineralization of broilers and litter quality. Ross 308 male broiler chicks (n = 768) were allotted to 48 pens with 16 birds each. There were 8 dietary treatments in a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial arrangement. Factors were NE challenge (no or yes), phytase level (500 or 5,000 FTU/kg), and MBM (as-received or over-processed). Half of the birds were challenged with field strains of Eimeria spp. at d 9 and 108 CFU per mL of Clostridium perfringens strain EHE-NE18 on d 14 and 15. The middle toe, tibia and femur of 2 birds per pen were excised at d 16 and 29 for determination of ash, breaking strength (BS) and bone mineralization. At d 42, all were assessed for hock burns and litter was scored and assessed for dry matter (DM). At d 16, challenged birds had lower toe ash (P < 0.01), femur ash (P < 0.001), tibia ash (P < 0.001) and tibial BS (P < 0.001) than unchallenged birds. At d 16, challenged birds fed high phytase and over-processed MBM had higher toe Mn than those fed low phytase and as-received MBM. At d 29 unchallenged birds fed high phytase and as-received MBM had a higher toe Mn than those fed over-processed MBM. At d 16, a phytase × MBM interaction was detected for femur Zn concentration (P < 0.05), where a higher level of Zn was observed in the high phytase group fed over-processed MBM. At d 16, tibial Ca (P < 0.05) and P (P < 0.05) were lower in the challenged whereas the femur K (P < 0.001), Mn (P < 0.01) and Na (P < 0.001) were higher in the challenged at d 16. At d 42, challenged birds had higher litter DM (P = 0.058) and fewer hock burns than those unchallenged (P < 0.05). In conclusion, NE impaired bone traits but high phytase and over-processed MBM increased bone mineral contents. Cases of hock burns may be lower under NE incidences due to lower livability of birds reducing litter wetness.

The objective of this study is to realise the successful species discrimination of meat and bone meals (MBMs) based on the complementarity of FT-IR and Raman spectra. The spectral variation of typical lipid profiles on FT-IR and Raman spectra of MBMs as well as the chemical structure-related principle of FT-IR and Raman spectroscopies related to lipid characteristics were investigated. Lipids from MBMs were separately collected by FT-IR and Raman spectroscopes, which illustrated both spectra (1800 ~ 900 cm-1) presented different typical lipid peaks. The combination of FT-IR and Raman spectra contributed to establish the more reliable and robust species discrimination model compared to single FT-IR or Raman spectra due to more detailed and integrated molecular vibration information. Degree of unsaturation and cis/trans fatty acid contents were considered the important chemical structure-related factors for ideal species discrimination. Complementation of FT-IR and Raman spectra performed synergistic enhancement to the species discrimination with diverse contributions.

This study analyzed the meat and bone meal (MBM) matrix complexity from the perspective of fraction composition diversity and a classification strategy was proposed to accurately and rapidly identify the MBM species based on near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Partial Least Squares-Discrimination Analysis (PLS-DA) based on full samples, meat meal (MM), MBM and bone meal (BM) performed with decreasing classification errors of 0.115, 0.079, 0.044 and 0.039 which were partly caused by wide sample range; bone fraction content had positive correlation with most of MBM species differences reflected by principal component scores; and PLS-DA classification errors among MM, MBM and BM were lower than 0.013. To take fully advantage of the above results, a sequential classification strategy was proposed; near infrared spectra were selected (belong to MM, MBM or BM) and then species discrimination analysis was conducted based on the specific PLS-DA model.

This study investigated the hypothesis that feeding broilers over-processed meat and bone meal (MBM) would impair gut health in the absence of phytase and in turn, affect inositol phosphate (inositol x-phosphate, IPx: IP3, IP4, IP5 and IP6) ester hydrolysis, intestinal permeability, hematology, jejunal gene expression and intestinal morphology during necrotic enteritis (NE). Ross 308 male broilers (n = 768) were assigned to one of 8 dietary treatments in a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial arrangement, with 6 replicate pens per diet and 16 birds per pen in a completely randomized design. Factors were: NE challenge (no or yes), phytase level (500 or 5,000 FTU/kg) and MBM processing (as-received or over-processed). For the NE challenge, half of the birds were challenged with field strains of Eimeria spp. on d 9 and 108 CFU/mL of Clostridium perfringens strain EHE-NE18 on d 14 and 15. A 3-way challenge, phytase and MBM processing interaction was detected for IP5 (P < 0.05) and IP6 (P < 0.05) levels in the ileum. Birds fed low phytase had increased IP5 and IP6 in unchallenged birds only when diets contained over-processed MBM. Challenge with NE increased intestinal permeability as measured by serum fluorescein isothiocyanate dextran (FITC-d; P < 0.001), increased white blood cells (WBC; P < 0.001), decreased mean corpuscular volume (MCV; P < 0.001) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH; P < 0.05), and decreased crypt-to-villi ratio (P < 0.05). The over-processed MBM reduced the villi-to-crypt ratio (P < 0.05). A 3-way challenge × phytase × MBM processing interaction was detected for mucin 2 (MUC-2) expression (P < 0.05) where only in unchallenged birds fed over-processed MBM did high phytase reduce MUC-2 expression. A lower expression of aminopeptidase N (APN; P < 0.001) and vitamin D receptor (VDR; P < 0.001) were recorded in NE challenged birds. In conclusion, NE has a negative impact on the gut and hematology of broilers, but its effect on phytate hydrolysis is minimal.

This study determined the variations in protein digestibilities and digestion rates in broiler chickens offered diets containing 7 different meat and bone meals (MBM). A total of 252 male Ross 308 broiler chickens were offered 7 atypical diets largely based on maize and MBM from 24 to 28 d post-hatch. Each experimental diet was offered to 6 replicates with 6 birds per replicate cage. Excreta were collected in their entirety from 25 to 27 d post-hatch and on 28 d post-hatch. Digesta samples were collected from the proximal jejunum, distal jejunum, proximal ileum and distal ileum. Apparent digestibilities of protein were determined in each segment and apparent digestibilities of amino acids were measured in the distal ileum. There were significant differences in apparent protein digestibility coefficients in the proximal jejunum (P = 0.006), where broiler chickens offered the high ash beef meal (diet 7) generated the lowest protein digestibility in the proximal jejunum (0.318). Similarly, there were significant differences in apparent digestibility coefficients in the distal jejunum (P < 0.001) and distal ileum (P < 0.001) but not in the proximal ileum. More pronounced differences were found in the disappearance rate of protein and there were significant differences in all 4 segments of the small intestine (P < 0.001). Broiler chickens offered the high ash beef meal had the lowest protein disappearance rate (P < 0.001). No difference was observed in the predicted protein digestion rate (P = 0.486) but chickens offered the high ash beef meal had the lowest potential digestible protein (0.662, P = 0.034) whereas the highest potential digestible protein (0.739) was detected in diet 5 (containing a beef meal). This study contributed to the establishment of a preliminary database to include digestion rates of starch and protein into practical diet formulation.

This feeding study investigated the hypothesis that over-processing of meat and bone meal (MBM) would impair the performance, gut health and ileal digestibility of nutrients in birds challenged with necrotic enteritis (NE). The effect of phytase (500 vs. 5,000 FTU/kg) was also examined using manufacturers recommended matrix values for 500 FTU for both levels. Ross 308 male broilers (n = 768) were assigned to 8 diets, with 6 replicate pens per diet and 16 birds per replicate pen using a randomized design with a factorial arrangement of treatments. Factors were NE challenge (no or yes), MBM (as received or over-processed), and phytase level (500 or 5,000 FTU/kg). Half of the birds were challenged with 5,000 oocysts of field strains of Eimeria acervulina and Eimeria brunetti, and 2,500 oocysts of Eimeria maxima on d 9 and 108 CFU/mL of Clostridium perfringens strain EHE-NE18 on d 14 and 15 post-hatch. Challenge × MBM interactions were detected for weight gain (WG), feed conversion ratio (FCR) and feed intake (FI) at d 14, 21 and 28, showing that challenged birds fed over-processed MBM had decreased WG (P < 0.05) and FI (P < 0.05) at d 14, increased FCR (P < 0.05) at d 21 and decreased WG (P < 0.05) and FI (P > 0.05) at d 28. Birds fed low phytase had increased livability (P < 0.05) at d 42. The challenge increased the prevalence and severity of NE induced lesions in the jejunum (P < 0.05) and ileum (P < 0.05). The birds fed over-processed MBM had decreased pH in the jejunum (P < 0.05) and ileum (P < 0.05) at d 16. High phytase increased apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of Ca (P < 0.05) and P (P < 0.05), and over-processed MBM increased AID of carbon (C; P < 0.05) and Ca (P < 0.05) at d 29. The challenge increased the caecal counts of Lactobacillus spp. (P < 0.05) and C. perfringens (P < 0.05) at d 16. The results indicated that supplementation of diets with high phytase reduces the negative impact on performance from over-processed MBM during NE as a result of increased nutrient digestibility.

Three experiments were conducted to determine phosphorus (P) digestibility and bioavailability using different methods. The objective of the first experiment was to determine ileal P digestibility of soybean meal (SBM), meat and bone meal (MBM), and spray-dried plasma protein (SDPP) using a precision-fed broiler chick assay. This assay involved feeding 8 g of SBM, MBM, or SDPP to broiler chicks at 21 D of age. At 6 h after feeding, ileal digesta were collected. Ileal P digestibility of SBM, MBM, and SDPP was 64, 42, and 94%, respectively. In the second experiment, ileal P digestibility and excreta P retention of SBM, SDPP, and MBM were determined using an ad libitum fed chick assay. On day 17 of age, chicks were placed on 1 of 12 dietary treatments that consisted of diets containing increasing levels of SBM, SDPP, or MBM. On day 21, ileal digesta and excreta were collected. True ileal P digestibility and true excreta P retention estimated using regression of ileal P or excreta P output on dietary P content yielded true ileal P digestibility values for SBM, SDPP, and MBM (2 diet methods for MBM) to be 83, 98, 61, and 23%, respectively. True excreta P retention values for SBM, SDPP, and MBM (2 methods) were determined to be 51, 99, 32, and 53%, respectively. The third experiment determined bioavailability of P in SBM, SDPP, and MBM relative to KH2PO4 using a chick bone ash bioassay. Dietary treatments included a P-deficient cornstarch-dextrose-SBM diet supplemented with 2 increasing levels of P from KH2PO4, SBM, SDPP, or MBM. Bioavailability of P based on tibia ash estimated using the multiple regression slope ratio method was 36, 125, and 76% for SBM, SDPP, and MBM, respectively, relative to KH2PO4. The results of this study indicated the digestibility/relative bioavailability of the P in SDPP was very high for all 3 methods, but values for SBM and MBM varied greatly among different methods.

Meat and bone meal (MBM) is an important protein source used in animal feeds. However, as the composition and availability of amino acids (AAs) in MBM fluctuate markedly, it is important to verify the magnitude of these parameters in different MBMs. In this study, the AA compositions of 19 MBMs were analyzed to confirm variations in lysine (Lys), threonine (Thr), and tryptophan (Trp), then which were compared with those of soybean meal (SBM) and fish meal (FM). Instability in Lys, Thr, and Trp availabilities in six MBMs were also considered after estimation using the slope-ratio growth assay technique in rats. Variations in AA composition were evaluated using the coefficient of variance (CV: Standard deviation/Mean). CVs for Lys, Thr, and Trp content were 9.40, 11.83, and 18.12 in MBM, 2.71, 2.48, and 3.19 in SBM, and 10.09, 10.44, and 13.47 in FM. Furthermore, means and SDs for Lys, Thr, and Trp availabilities in MBM were 53.3 ± 10.4% (CV: 19.5), 65.9 ± 17.6% (CV: 26.6), and 83.2 ± 11.2% (CV: 13.5), respectively. These results provide the first evidence that variations in MBM AA compositions were 3.5 to 5.7 times higher than those in SBM, but similar to FM, and that the large variation in availability substantially existed.

The objective of this study was to compare the standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of amino acids (AA) in 3 poultry by-products including hydrolyzed feather meal (HFM), flash dried poultry protein (FDPP), and poultry meal (PM) and also a meat and bone meal (MBM) between broiler chickens and pigs. Experimental diets consisted of 4 diets containing each test ingredient as a sole source of nitrogen and a nitrogen-free diet. In experiment 1, 416 male broiler chickens with a mean initial body weight (BW) of 705 ± 100 g were allotted to 5 diets with 8 replicate cages per diet in a randomized complete block design with BW as a blocking factor at day 18 posthatching. After 5 d of feeding experimental diets, birds were euthanized by CO2 asphyxiation, and ileal digesta samples were collected from distal two-thirds of the ileum. In experiment 2, 10 barrows with a mean initial BW of 22.1 ± 1.59 kg were surgically fitted with T-cannulas at the distal ileum and allotted to a duplicate 5 × 4 incomplete Latin Square design with 5 diets and 4 periods. Each period lasted for 7 d including 5 d of adaptation and 2 d of ileal digesta collection. Data from experiments 1 and 2 were pooled together and analyzed as a 2 × 4 factorial arrangement with the effects of species (broiler chickens or pigs) and 4 experimental diets (HFM, FDPP, PM, or MBM). There were interactions (P < 0.05) between experimental diets and species in the SID of His, Lys, Thr, Trp, Val, and all dispensable AA except Tyr. In broiler chickens, the SID of Lys in FDPP (73.3%) was greater (P < 0.05) than in HFM (55.7%) but was lower (P < 0.05) than in MBM (86.5%), which was not different from PM (78.7%). In pigs, however, the SID of Lys in FDPP and PM (70.0 and 70.1%, respectively) were greater (P < 0.05) than in HFM (39.0%) but were lower (P < 0.05) than in MBM (79.2%). Broiler chickens fed FDPP and PM had lower (P < 0.05) SID of His, Thr, and Trp than those fed MBM; however, there was no difference in the SID of His, Thr, or Trp among pigs fed FDPP, PM, or MBM. The SID of Val in MBM was greater (P < 0.05) than in the other test ingredients for broiler chickens, but there was no difference in the SID of Val among test ingredients for pigs. Pigs had greater (P < 0.05) SID of Ile and Met than broiler chickens. In conclusion, the pattern of differences in the SID of His, Lys, Thr, Trp, and Val, but not the other indispensable AA, among poultry by-products and MBM were different between broiler chickens and pigs.

Undigested proteins entering the hindgut may favor the proliferation of Clostridium perfringens. Using phytase to eliminate the need for meat and bone meal (MBM) as a P source may reduce potential infection with C. perfringens. A study was conducted to determine the impact of MBM, phytase, and antibiotics (AB) on intestinal permeability and morphology, organ weights, and jejunal gene expression in Ross 308 chickens challenged with subclinical necrotic enteritis (NE). Male Ross 308-day-old chicks (672 each) were randomly allocated to 8 treatments with 6 replicate pens each housing 14 birds. A 2 × 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments was used: MBM (no or yes); AB (no or yes-Zn bacitracin 100 in S and 50 ppm in G/F and salinomycin Na 60 ppm in all phases); phytase (500 or 1,500 FTU/kg, both using 500 FTU matrix values) using wheat-SBM-canola meal diets. Birds were challenged with Eimeria spp on day 9, and C. perfringens strain EHE-NE18 on day 14 and 15. An AB × MBM interaction (P < 0.05) was detected for relative gizzard weight (with contents) being lower in birds fed MBM and AB compared to those fed MBM and no AB. A MBM × AB interaction (P > 0.01) was detected for lymphocyte counts being lower with MBM and AB compared to MBM without AB. A phytase × AB interaction (P < 0.05) was observed for villi length being increased with high phytase and no AB compared to with AB. Inclusion of MBM increased (P < 0.05) blood FICT-d concentration, whereas AB decreased it (P < 0.05). Antibiotics increased RBC (P < 0.05), Hgb (P < 0.05), and PCV (P < 0.05) and expression of Ca-binding protein, CALB1 (P > 0.05). Inclusion of MBM decreased expression of MUC2 (P < 0.05). Results indicate that dietary MBM has a detrimental effect on gut health of broilers but this may be counteracted using AB.

RESUMO

We investigated Seneca Valley virus (SVV) contamination in pig feed and feed ingredients. Twenty-seven samples were collected from two Brazilian feed mills and subjected to conventional RT-nested-PCR and qRT-PCR assays. Seven samples were SVV-positive with viral loads of 3.94-4.33 log10 genomic copies/g of feed. The study reveals SVV feed and feed ingredient contamination under natural conditions in Brazil.

Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was applied for the species-specific identification of meat and bone meal (MBM), based on genomic DNA characteristics. A total of 51 source-reliable MBM samples, including porcine, poultry, bovine, and ovine MBM, were analysed. Genomic DNA was extracted using an optimized procedure for FTIR scanning. The results showed that a series of discriminatory FTIR spectral bands were closely related to DNA characteristics of MBM. The spectral intensity difference at 1651 cm-1 was identified as a key peak for discriminating ruminant from non-ruminant MBM. Combining FTIR data with chemometrics, a two-step protocol for discriminant analysis was established. An initial identification model of porcine, poultry, and ruminant MBM and a second model of bovine and ovine MBM were established. The results obtained using two models showed that the correct classification rate was 100%. This method could assist governments in confirming the authenticity of species to ensure feed safety.

Soil contamination with diesel oil is frequent and methods to improve remediation of diesel oil contaminated soils are urgently needed. The aim of the current study was to assess the potential of meat and bone meal (MBM) as a biostimulation agent to enhance diesel oil degradation in contaminated soils collected from southern Finland. MBM (2% w/w) increased oil degradation in soils when compared to natural attenuation. The increase was comparable to soils treated with a traditional fertilizer (urea). Soil pH increased rapidly in urea treated soil but remained at the level of natural attenuation in MBM treated soil, suggesting that in large-scale experiments MBM treated soils avoid the usual negative impact of urea on soil pH and ultimately microbial degradation. These results indicate that MBM addition enhances diesel oil degradation, and that MBM speeds up ex situ bioremediation of oil contaminated soils.
