ABSTRACT

"Along with many countries fighting the AIDS epidemic; it was confirmed by our study that the ""information-giving"" model (Figure 1) of health education is still utilised in Zimbabwe more extensively than those models which employ a participatory approach in the education process. This was evidenced through reports by Workshop participants who located current practice within didactic approaches such as talks lecturers and leader controlled discussion."

ABSTRACT

This manual was compiled in response to findings from a Workshop held in Zimbabwe in January 1992; at which representatives from a range of Non-Governmental Organisations working in the AIDS sector identified an urgent need to develop and strengthen communication skills in AIDS education and prevention. The content was subsequently developed through field trials and a participatory process of evaluation in which representatives from Non-Governmental Organisations throughout Zimbabwe actively participated. The manual is divided into four parts. Part One provides background information for the trainer; while Parts Two and Three contain ideas; activities and resources which are designed to foster improvedcommunication among adults about AIDS. The manual concludes with a section about participatory methods for evaluation. Each Part shows step-by-step; how different training methods can be used to assist adults to assess their understanding of AIDS; how existing information can be increased through a partnership between the learner and the trainer; and how problem solving and decision making can be encouraged
