ABSTRACT

To assess oral health knowledge, attitude, and practices of elderly and to identify barriers which affect receiving oral health services by the elderly. A cross sectional study was conducted including males and females aged >60 years attending the GMC hospital and Al Mushaerif PHC Center. A convenience sampling method was used to recruit the participants. The administered questionnaire, interviewer Validated, was used. A scoring system was used to assess the knowledge and practice of participants. Individuals with < average scores were considered to have poor knowledge and inadequate practice. Data was analyzed using the SPSS software 20. X[2] test, simple and multiple logistic regression analysis were used. A p value <0.05 was the significance level. The study included 423 participants, mostly 60-69years old [55.5%], females [58.2%], Emirati [63.2%], currently unmarried [60.2%], living with family members [44.3%], having >12 years of education [59%] medical insurance [60.8%] dental insurance 41.0%. The most frequent barrier that affect receiving oral health services is [being unable to afford the payment] [24.5%]. A 20.3% of participants had zero knowledge score, 62% had poor knowledge and 87.9% had inadequate practices. The probability of poor knowledge was significantly higher among older age group [OR: 4.9; CI: 2.0-12.4, p=0.001], living with other family members [OR: 2.9; CI:1.6-5.3, p<0.001], and Emirati [OR:2.6; CI:2.3-5.4, p<0.001]. Probability of inadequate practices was significantly higher among unmarried [OR: 2.7; CI: 1.4-5.0] and Emirati [OR: 3.1;CI: 1.7-5.7]. A great proportion of elderly had poor knowledge and inadequate oral hygiene practices. Ethnic and social factors are significant determinants of poor knowledge and inadequate practices. Economic factor was the most common barrier

ABSTRACT

The study intended to assess the knowledge of nurses regarding oral health among the elderly. This cross sectional study was conducted over a period of six months. Registered nurses in Ajman, UAE [was the] target population. Nurses working in the Gulf Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, Ajman, UAE [GMCHRC] were invited to participate in this study. A self-administered and validated questionnaire was used. A scoring system was used to evaluate the knowledge of the nurses in different domains and a knowledge score <60% was considered inadequate. The data was analyzed using the SPSS software, version 18. The association between years of clinical experience, level of education and nurses' knowledge in different domains were assessed. Adequacy of knowledge in different domains was also tested. The study involved 115 participants [10 males [8.7%] and 105[91.3%] females]. Approximately 30% of the nurses had Bachelor degree and 70% of them had >/=5 year's experience. More than one third of the nurses are unaware about the need to floss and the importance of using mouthwash for elderly. The study reveals lack of knowledge in high proportion of nurses with regard to oral conditions commonly seen in elderly. Years of experience and level of education are not significantly associated with knowledge of nurses in this domain. Inadequate knowledge related to the indicators of healthy mouth in elderly was noticed in 49.6% of the nurses. Neither level of education, nor years of clinical experience had significant association with knowledge pertaining to most of the items included in these domains. More than 30% of the nurses were not aware of necessary oral-care products/ agents for elderly who are admitted in the hospital. Inadequate knowledge pertaining to oral health in the elderly is noticed among a high proportion of studied nurses

ABSTRACT

30 patients with cutaneous burn including various parts of the skin were examined for inhalation injuries by a thorough physical examination and a chest X-ray. Arterial blood was drown for gas analysis. Bronchoscopy was performed to visualise the bronchopulmonary system. Comparison of the results was carried out, and discussed. A conclusion is made that bronchoscopy is an acurate means of assessing inhalation injuries, even in the absence of clinical and radiological findings. Bronchoscopy can be performed without compilcations as pneumonia and bronchopneunonia and can play a role in prevention of atelectasis

ABSTRACT

This work has been done to study and correlate the clinical, operative and post operative follow up of operations of undescended testis at different age groups. Post operative follow up for 2 years was done for the position and size in relation to the type of orchiopexy used. In cases of orchiodectomy, in unilateral undescended testis in adult age semen analysis was done pre and post operative for follow up. Histopathological examination was done for orchidectomy cases. We found that the best time for operation is in younger age [1 - 2 years], the testis retained its normal size and position within first 3 to 6 months of post operative peroid. The best results achieved by subdartos pouch fixation. In unilateral undescended testis after puberty improvement in semen quality
