ABSTRACT

Carcinoembryonic antigen [CEA] was estimated in 30 patients with carcinoma of the breast and 10 patients with benign breast lump. The results were compared to that of controls. There was no significant increase in CEA level in benign breast lesions. In carcinoma of the breast CEA was found to be elevated. This increase was more significant in more advanced stages. Estimation of CEA level is helpful during the period of treatment to assess the response to therapy

ABSTRACT

20% methicillin resistant Staph. aureus strains were recovered over three months period out of 200 strains of Staph. aureus isolated from the Surgical Department of the Main Alexandria University Hospital. Being of the same biochemical character they denote an original single strain responsible for their propagation. This necessitate prompt isolation of such patients and optimal hand washing practices an antiseptic technique when dealing with such patients. Definite cross resistance between methicillin resistance and cephalosporins has been proven. Thus, the existence of a reservoir of methicillin resistant strains in a hospital should alter not only the approach to treatment of established infections but also affect the choice of preoperative prophylactic regimens. The most threatening epidemiologic aspect is the potential for spread of these nosocomial strains into the community

ABSTRACT

Sixty patients with chronic leg ulcers randomly collected from the out patient clinic, were studied in this work. Amniotic membrane had been used as a biological dressing in 40 patients in comparison to 20 control patients to whom conventional dressing were applied. Amnion dressings were carried out according to two different lines of treatment, every other day and every fifth day for each 20 patients group of study. Amniotic membrane dressingd had been significantly superior to conventional methods as proved by measurement of healing rates and bacterial counts of each group

ABSTRACT

This work aimed to study the effect of H1 and H2-receptors blockers on the portal venous pressure separately and in combination. Experimental portal hypertension was done by clamping the portal vein of dogs, simulating what happens in schistosomal hepatic fibrosis. H1-receptor blocker [mepyramine maleate] was used in five dogs, H2-receptor blocker [cimetidine] was used in five dogs, and in other five dogs both H1 and H2-receptor blockers were used. It was found that the synergestic action of both H1 and H2-receptor blockers causes more lowering of the portal blood pressure than using any of them alone, which is helpful in bleeding esophageal varices

ABSTRACT

Endometriosis is a rare disease at the umbilicus. Less than fifty causes of umbilical end ometriosis have been reported [MacLeod]. A record of a rare case of umbilical endometrioma in which the presenting feature was episodic dyspepsia recurring with every menestruation. This case was diagnosed clinically and cured by operative excision. A discussion on the etiology and pathology of endcmetriosis is included. The first case of endometriosis of the umbilicus in Alexandria University hospitals was diagnosed clinically, treated and confirmed by excision biopsy. A suggestion explaining the episodes of dyspepsia and abdominal crisis the patient had, was given. A discussion on the etiology and pathology of endometriosis is also given with a review of literature
