ABSTRACT

This study on 3454 healthy Saudi male and female adults and children was conducted with the aim of establishing the 'reference interval' for plasma albumin and to investigate the effect of age and sex on the normal range. Albumin showed a normal Gaussian distribution and using parametric and non-parametric methods the range in adults was found to be 43.96 +/- 12.2 g/l and 40.6 +/- 12.6g/l in the male and female groups respectively. The male results were significantly higher than the female, except in those >/= 50 years of age and those less than 10 years. This study also showed that the albumin level decreased slightly with age. Furthermore, the correlation between albumin and other plasma proteins showed a positive correlation between albumin and transferrin, IgG and IgA; a negative correlation between albumin and Alpha 1-antitrypsin and no correlation between albumin and IgM and Gc protein

ABSTRACT

This study was conducted on 1534 Saudi males and females to establish 'normal reference intervals' for group specific component [Gc] protein concentration, using rate nephelometry. The reference intervals were established using mean +/- 2SD and 2.5th to 97.5th percentiles. In the overall population the Gc reference interval was 32.8 +/- 14 mg/dl, while in the male and female populations, the reference intervals were 31.6 +/- 13.2 mg/dl and 33.9 +/- 16 mg/dl respectively. When grouped on the basis of age, the lowest Gc level was in the

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out on 1137 healthy male and female Saudis of different age groups to establish normal reference ranges for immunoglobulins [IgG, IgM and IgA]. The ranges were established using mean +/- 2SD and 2.5th to 97.5th percentiles. Immunoglobulin levels were estimated using rate nephelometry and a close correlation was found between the results obtained by rate nephelometry and radial immunodiffusion. A positive correlation was obtained between levels of IgG, IgM and IgA with age. Furthermore, significant differences related to sex were encountered. Both IgG and IgM levels were significantly higher in the females compared to the male population. However, IgA did not show any difference. Comparison of the results, with those reported in the literature showed several marked differences. In this paper the normal reference ranges for IgG, IgA and IgM in healthy male and female Saudis are presented and the results are compared with those reported in literature

ABSTRACT

This study was conducted on 543 males and 603 females in order to establish the normal reference value for plasma transferrin using rate nephelometry. A significant difference was found in the mean values and ranges in the male and female populations and a positive correlation was demonstrated between the transferrin level and age. The results showed a normal transferrin distribution. It was found that for males the normal reference value for transferrin was 310 +/- 125 mg/dl while for the females the reference value was 335 +/- 170 mg/dl. Among the children [
