ABSTRACT

Introduction: Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) manifests with a constellation of common throat symptoms and inconclusive signs on laryngoscopic exam. It is a diagnosis, often made clinically, that can lead to prescriptions of proton pump inhibitors that are unnecessary and potentially harmful. Glottic insufficiency (GI) and the accompanying hyperfunctional laryngeal behaviors can also present with similar, common throat complaints that may or may not include a qualitative change to the voice. Methods: This is a reflection article. It is written to summarize, explain, and support with evidence the opinion of the author on the topic of how symptoms of voice disorders can easily be mistaken for symptoms of LPR. The offered reflection is based on his experience, research and the available literature. Reflection: This article intends to explore the similarities between GI and LPR, how to ultimately differentiate them and how to approach treatment with a broader differential diagnosis. Conclusion: LPR and GI can present with identical, vague throat, and voice symptoms. Empiric medication trials, behavioral interventions and objective laryngovideostroboscopy, impedance-based reflux, and esophageal motility testing may all be needed, sometimes in a trial and error fashion, to correctly diagnose and treat a patient's symptoms.


Introducción: El reflujo laríngeo-faríngeo (LPR, por sus siglas en inglés) se manifiesta con una serie de síntomas comunes en la garganta y signos no concluyentes en el examen larinoscópico. Es un diagnóstico que a menudo se realiza clínicamente y que puede llevar a la prescripción de inhibidores de la bomba de protones que son innecesarios y potencialmente perjudiciales. La insuficiencia glótica (IG) y los comportamientos laríngeos hiperfuncionales que la acompañan también pueden presentar síntomas de garganta comunes similares, que pueden o no incluir un cambio cualitativo en la voz. Métodos: Este es un artículo de reflexión. Está escrito para resumir, explicar y respaldar con evidencia la opinión del autor sobre cómo los síntomas de los trastornos de la voz pueden confundirse fácilmente con los síntomas del LPR. La reflexión ofrecida se basa en su experiencia, investigación y la literatura disponible. Reflexión: Este artículo tiene la intención de explorar las similitudes entre la IG y el LPR, cómo diferenciarlos finalmente y cómo abordar el tratamiento con un diagnóstico diferencial más amplio. Conclusión: El LPR y la IG pueden presentar síntomas idénticos y vagos en la garganta y la voz. Puede ser necesario realizar ensayos de medicación empírica, intervenciones conductuales y pruebas objetivas de laringovideostroboscopia, reflujo basado en impedancia y motilidad esofágica, a veces de manera experimental, para diagnosticar y tratar correctamente los síntomas de un paciente.

ABSTRACT

The coexistence of double aneuploidy of Down and Turner syndromes is rare; most cases have been due to double mitotic errors. The objective of the study was to report a case with monosomy of the X chromosome and trisomy of chromosome 21, in mosaic variety, highlighting the phenotypic effect that the presence of different chromosomal abnormalities can produce and compare with those reported in the literature. A 10-year-old Ecuadorian female, born to a multipregnant mother with 46 years at conception, is seen in consultation with a predominant clinical phenotype of Down syndrome, associated with menarche, presence of pubic and axillary villu, where a karyotype is verified 45 X[7]/47XX+ 21 [3]/46, X, der (X)(: p11.1-> q11.1)[1]/46,XX [1]. The present case is a double Turner-Down aneuploidy, with predominantly X monosomy cell line, who shows important mental retardation and some signs of puberal development not usually in Turner syndrome. These features highlight the clinical importance of doing a karyotype in mental retardation cases and searching low mosaics of another aneuploidies in atypical cases. Its complex chromosomal formula and support with molecular cytogenetics allowed diagnostic confirmation and genetic counseling.


La coexistencia de doble aneuploidía de los síndromes de Down y Turner es rara; la mayoría de los casos se han debido a dobles errores mitóticos. Reportar un caso con trisomía del cromosoma 21 y monosomía del cromosoma en X, en variedad mosaico, que curiosamente presenta un despertar puberal precoz y comparar con los reportados en la literatura. Paciente ecuatoriana de sexo femenino, de 10 años de edad, nacida de madre multigesta con 46 años a la concepción, que es vista en consulta con fenotipo clínico predominante de Síndrome Down, asociado a menarquia y telarquia, donde se constata un cariotipo. El presente caso es el primero informado de mosaicismo de doble aneuploidía de Turner-Down asociado con un despertar puberal precoz. Su fórmula cromosómica compleja y el apoyo con la citogenética molecular permitió la confirmación diagnostica y la asesoría genética.

ABSTRACT

As a serine hydrolase, monoacylglycerol lipase (MAGL) is principally responsible for the metabolism of 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) in the central nervous system (CNS), leading to the formation of arachidonic acid (AA). Dysfunction of MAGL has been associated with multiple CNS disorders and symptoms, including neuroinflammation, cognitive impairment, epileptogenesis, nociception and neurodegenerative diseases. Inhibition of MAGL provides a promising therapeutic direction for the treatment of these conditions, and a MAGL positron emission tomography (PET) probe would greatly facilitate preclinical and clinical development of MAGL inhibitors. ABSTRACT

Objetivou-se avaliar o bloqueio sensitivo e motor da administração peridural de 0,2mL/kg de duas concentrações de ropivacaína em comparação à lidocaína em cães. Utilizaram-se 24 cães, distribuídos em quatro grupos: NaCl a 0,9% (GS), lidocaína a 2% (GL), ropivacaína a 0,5% (GR5) e ropivacaína a 0,75% (GR7,5). Avaliaram-se a presença de movimentação espontânea, deambulação, sensibilidade superficial e profunda nos momentos cinco, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 45, 60, 90, 120, 180, 240 e 300 minutos após peridural. O retorno à movimentação espontânea foi semelhante entre GL (42,50 ± 6,12) e GR7,5 (69,2 ± 58,9). O tempo para deambulação foi mais prolongado em GR7,5 (107,5 ± 79,3) que em GS (9,2 ± 3,8) e em GR5 (32,5 ± 20,9). O retorno da sensibilidade profunda foi maior em GR 7,5 (152,5 ± 89,2) que em GS (5,8 ± 2,0), GR5 (46,7 ± 46,3) e GL (52,5 ± 20,7). O tempo de retorno da sensibilidade superficial foi maior em GR7,5 (205,0 ± 129,3) que em GS (7,5 ± 2,7), GL (72,5 ± 19,9) e GR5 (97,5 ± 55,1). Apesar do retorno precoce da movimentação, ropivacaína 0,75% está relacionada a tempo prolongado de recuperação da função muscular e bloqueio sensitivo mais prolongado que lidocaína e ropivacaína 0,5%.(AU)


The aim of the present study was to evaluate the sensory and motor blockade of epidural 0.5% and 0.75% Ropivacaine or Lidocaine in dogs. Twenty-four dogs were distributed in four groups: 0.9% NaCl (GS), 2% lidocaine (GL), 0.5% ropivacaine (GR5) and 0.75% ropivacaine (GR7.5). Spontaneous movement, ability to walk, superficial, and deep pain response were assessed 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 45, 60, 90, 120, 180, 240 and 300 minutes after epidural. Time to return to spontaneous movement was similar between GL (42.50 ± 6.12) and GR7.5 (69.2 ± 58.9). Time to return to ambulation was longer in GR7.5 (107.5 ± 79.3) than in GS (9.2 ± 3.8) and GR5 (32.5 ± 20.9). Time to recover deep sensitivity was longer in GR 7.5 (152.5 ± 89.2) than in GS (5.8 ± 2.0), GR5 (46.7 ± 46.3) and GL (52.5 ± 20.7). Time to return superficial sensitivity was longer in GR7.5 (205.0 ± 129.3) when compared to GS (7.5 ± 2.7), GL (72.5 ± 19.9) and GR5 (97.5 ± 55.1). Despite the early return of spontaneous movement, 0.75% ropivacaine is related to longer periods for muscle function recovery and longer sensory block than lidocaine and 0.5% ropivacaine.(AU)

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To characterize recent HIV infections among newly diagnosed men who have sex with men and transgender women in Tijuana. METHODS Limiting Antigen (LAg)-Avidity testing was performed to detect recent HIV infection within a cohort of newly-diagnosed men who have sex with men and transgender women in Tijuana. Logistic regression was used to determine characteristics associated with recent infection. A partial transmission network was inferred using HIV-1 pol sequences. Tamura-Nei 93 genetic distances were measured between all pairs of sequences, and the network was constructed by inferring putative transmission links (genetic distances ≤ 1.5%). We assessed whether recent infection was associated with clustering within the inferred network. RESULTS Recent infection was detected in 11% (22/194) of newly-diagnosed participants. Out of the participants with sequence data, 60% (9/15) with recent infection clustered compared with 31% (43/139) with chronic infection. Two recent infections belonged to the same cluster. In adjusted analyses, recent infection was associated with years of residence in Tijuana (OR = 1.5; 95%CI 1.01-1.09), cocaine use (past month) (OR = 8.50; 95%CI 1.99-28.17), and ever experiencing sexual abuse (OR = 2.85; 95%CI 1.03-7.85). DISCUSSION A total of 11% of men newly diagnosed with HIV who have sex with men and transgender women in Tijuana were recently infected. The general lack of clustering between participants with recent infection suggests continued onward HIV transmission rather than an outbreak within a particular cluster.

Abstract: Objective: To identify correlates of HIV/STI prevalence among 13 cities with varying sizes of female sex worker (FSW) populations and municipal characteristics in Mexico. Materials and methods: FSWs underwent interviews and testing for HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia. Logistic regression explored variations in HIV/STI prevalence. Results: Among FSWs (n=1 092), prevalence across 13 sites was: HIV: 0.4% (range: 0%-1.4%): syphilis: 7.8% (range: 0%-17.2%); chlamydia: 15.3% (range: 5.7%-32.2%); gonorrhea: 2.9% (range 0%-13.8%), and any HIV/STI: 23% (range: 9.9%-46%). Municipalities with high human development scores and a lower municipal marginalization index had higher odds of combined HIV/STI prevalence. After controlling for site-specific variability in municipal characteristics, greater risk of HIV/STIs was associated with lower education, having a spouse diagnosed or treated for an STI, unaffordability of condoms, and having non-Mexican clients. Conclusions: Prevalence of HIV/STIs varies across Mexican municipalities indicating the need for surveillance to identify hotspots for targeted resource allocation.


Resumen: Objetivo: Identificar correlaciones de la prevalencia de VIH / ITS entre 13 ciudades con diferentes tamaños de población de trabajadoras sexuales y características municipales en México. Material y métodos: Las trabajadoras sexuales fueron entrevistadas y recibieron pruebas de VIH, sífilis, gonorrea y clamidia. La regresión logística exploró las variaciones en la prevalencia del VIH/ITS. Resultados: Entre las trabajadoras sexuales (n = 1 092), la prevalencia en 13 sitios fue: VIH: 0.4% (rango: 0-1.4%): sífilis: 7.8% (rango: 0-17.2%); clamidia: 15.3% (rango: 5.7-32.2%); gonorrea: 2.9% (rango 0-13.8%) y cualquier VIH/ITS: 23% (rango: 9.9-46%). Los municipios con altos puntajes de desarrollo humano y menor índice de marginación municipal tuvieron una mayor probabilidad de prevalencia combinada de VIH/ITS. Después de controlar la variabilidad específica del sitio en las características municipales, el mayor riesgo de VIH / ITS se asoció con menor educación, tener un cónyuge diagnosticado o tratado para una ITS, imposibilidad de conseguir condones y tener clientes no mexicanos. Conclusiones: La prevalencia de VIH/ITS varía entre los municipios mexicanos, lo que indica la necesidad de una vigilancia para identificar hotspots para la asignación selectiva.

ABSTRACT

We investigated the antifungal activities of an endophytic fungus identified as Acaromyces ingoldii, found on a loblolly (Pinus taeda L.) pine bolt in Louisiana during routine laboratory microbial isolations. The specific objectives were to determine the inhibitory properties of A. ingoldii secondary metabolites (crude extract) on the mycelial growth of a brown-rot fungus Gloeophyllum trabeum and a white-rot fungus Trametes versicolor, and to determine the effective concentration of A. ingoldii crude preparation against the two decay fungi in vitro. Results show the crude preparation of A. ingoldii from liquid culture possesses significant mycelial growth inhibitory properties that are concentration dependent against the brown-rot and white-rot fungi evaluated. An increase in the concentration of A. ingoldii secondary metabolites significantly decreased the mycelial growth of both wood decay fungi. G. trabeum was more sensitive to the inhibitory effect of the secondary metabolites than T. versicolor. Identification of specific A. ingoldii secondary metabolites, and analysis of their efficacy/specificity warrants further study. Findings from this work may provide the first indication of useful roles for Acaromyces species in a forest environment, and perhaps a future potential in the development of biocontrol-based wood preservation systems.

ABSTRACT

Recently, fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) has been attracting attention as a possible medical treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC). A randomized controlled trial of FMT for children with UC is currently underway. Therapeutic effects of FMT for adults with UC remain controversial. We report two cases of early-onset UC in children. A patient was diagnosed with UC at age 1-year 9-month and underwent FMT at age 2-year 3-month. He attained clinical remission for three weeks after FMT, but then relapsed at four weeks, ultimately undergoing a total colectomy. Another child was diagnosed with UC at 2-year 10-month and she underwent FMT at age 5 years. She has remained in clinical remission following FMT for 24 months and her UC has been maintained without complications with tacrolimus and azathioprine. We report that FMT for early-onset UC appears to be safe and potentially effective.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) signaling has been shown to control a large number of critical cellular actions such as cell death, differentiation, and development and has been implicated as a major regulator of placental function. SM10 cells are a mouse placental progenitor cell line, which has been previously shown to differentiate into nutrient transporting, labyrinthine-like cells upon treatment with TGF-β. However, the signal transduction pathway activated by TGF-β to induce SM10 progenitor differentiation has yet to be fully investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study the SM10 labyrinthine progenitor cell line was used to investigate TGF-β induced differentiation. Activation of the TGF-β pathway and the ability of TGF-β to induce differentiation were investigated by light microscopy, luciferase assays, and Western blot analysis. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: In this report, we show that three isoforms of TGF-β have the ability to terminally differentiate SM10 cells, whereas other predominant members of the TGF-β superfamily, Nodal and Activin A, do not. Additionally, we have determined that TGF-β induced Smad2 phosphorylation can be mediated via the ALK-5 receptor with subsequent transactivation of the Activin response element. Our studies identify an important regulatory signaling pathway in SM10 progenitor cells that is involved in labyrinthine trophoblast differentiation.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The Emergency Department (ED) Geriatric Readmission Assessment (ED-GRAY) is a 16-item questionnaire we developed that can be used to evaluate the prognostic ability to determine if geriatric patients will recidivate to the ED, be admitted or die within 30 days. Methods: We conducted an observational prospective cohort study at a single academic urban university-affiliated hospital. Subjects (n=250) were consenting, non-critically ill, English-speaking adults older than 65 years and receiving care in the ED. Multivariable logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to evaluate the ability to accurately predict the likelihood of a 30-day event: subsequent ED visit, hospitalization, or death. Results: 56 participants (22%) experienced at least one 30-day return visit or death. Greater disability as measured by the ED GRAY global disability was associated with an increased likelihood of an event (OR=1.7 for each 1-point worsening in severity; 95% CI 1.2, 2.5). In the multivariable model, prior ED visits (OR=2.7, 95% CI=1.4, 5.2), ED GRAY global score (OR=1.4, 95% CI=1.0, 2.1), and age (OR=1.03, 95% CI=0.99, 1.07) were associated with a greater likelihood of a 30-day event. The fit of the multivariable model was good (Hosmer-Lemeshow Goodness of Fit test, p=0.85) and it provided good discrimination between those having and not having a 30-day event (AUROC=0.70). The predicted probability of a return visit ranged from 3–56%. Conclusions: ED GRAY demonstrated good predictive validity when combined with prior ED visits, poly-pharmacy and age.

Objective: Our primary objective was to develop a reliable, valid, and efficient screening tool that measures recovery disability among geriatric patients for the Department of Emergency Medicine (ED) Geriatric Readmission Assessments (GRAY). Methods: We conducted a retrospective medical chart review and prospective data analysis of geriatric patients admitted to hospital from the emergency department that were discharged, admitted, or died at a single academic urban university-affiliated hospital to identify items for ED GRAY. Rasch analysis was then used to reduce items and construct an interval/ratio scale of physical and cognitive disabilities. Patients consisted of a cohort of consenting, non-critically ill, English-speaking adults older than 65 years and receiving care in the ED to reduce the number of items. Results: Rasch analyses resulted in infit and outfit statistics that eliminated redundant items or items that did not fit a unidimensional disability construct. From the 158 original items, sixteen items comprise the ED GRAY global health questionnaire, representing five sub-constructs: physical disability, cognitive disability, stress, depression, and isolation. All infit and outfit statistics for the global recovery disability score ranging from 1 (least healthy) to 5 (most healthy) were consistent with forming a unidimensional scale. Conclusions: Our study resulted in an objective measurement tool of physical and cognitive disability using Rasch analyses. This screening tool allows healthcare providers the ability to screen older ED patients on a continuum of risk, with high-risk patients being most likely to benefit from in-depth evaluation—e.g., comprehensive geriatric assessment—followed by intervention (when necessary).

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Cyclic vomiting syndrome (CVS) is a disabling migraine variant manifesting as severe episodes of nausea and vomiting and often refractory to many therapies. Gastric electrical stimulation (GES), which can reduce nausea and vomiting in gastroparesis, may provide symptomatic relief for drug-refractory CVS. This study assessed the utility GES in reducing the symptoms of CVS and improving the quality of life. METHODS: A one-year, non-randomized, clinical study was conducted. Eleven consecutive patients with drug refractory, cyclic vomiting syndrome based on Rome III criteria and North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (NASPGHAN), underwent treatment with temporary GES (Temp GES) and permanent GES (Perm GES). Post-treatment follow up was done up to one year after permanent gastric electrical stimulation therapy. RESULTS: Total symptom score decreased by 68% and 40% after temporary and permanent GES therapies, respectively. Hospital admission events significantly decreased to 1.50 (± 1.00) events from 9.14 (± 7.21) annual admissions prior to treatment with permanent GES. Vomiting episodes fell by 83% post Temp GES and 69% after Perm GES treatments. Mucosal electrogram values also changed after temporary stimulation. CONCLUSIONS: In a small group of drug-refractory CVS patients, treatments with temporary and permanent GES significantly reduced the severity of gastrointestinal symptoms and frequency of hospital admissions.

Aims: To report three cases of successful treatment of tardive dyskinesia (TD) with dextromethorphan. Study Design: Retrospective chart review. Place and Duration of Study: Private outpatient practice in Syracuse, NY. Methodology: A retrospective chart review of patients with TD who were treated with dextromethorphan between 2003 and 2013 was conducted. Results: Three consecutive patients experienced marked improvement of TD with dextromethorphan. Conclusion: Dextromethorphan may be a useful drug for treating TD. Further prospective studies are needed.

ABSTRACT

This study describes the neuropathologic features of normal canine brain ablated with non-thermal irreversible electroporation (N-TIRE). The parietal cerebral cortices of four dogs were treated with N-TIRE using a dose-escalation protocol with an additional dog receiving sham treatment. Animals were allowed to recover following N-TIRE ablation and the effects of treatment were monitored with clinical and magnetic resonance imaging examinations. Brains were subjected to histopathologic and ultrastructural assessment along with Bcl-2, caspase-3, and caspase-9 immunohistochemical staining following sacrifice 72 h post-treatment. Adverse clinical effects of N-TIRE were only observed in the dog treated at the upper energy tier. MRI and neuropathologic examinations indicated that N-TIRE ablation resulted in focal regions of severe cytoarchitectural and blood-brain-barrier disruption. Lesion size correlated to the intensity of the applied electrical field. N-TIRE-induced lesions were characterized by parenchymal necrosis and hemorrhage; however, large blood vessels were preserved. A transition zone containing parenchymal edema, perivascular inflammatory cuffs, and reactive gliosis was interspersed between the necrotic focus and normal neuropil. Apoptotic labeling indices were not different between the N-TIRE-treated and control brains. This study identified N-TIRE pulse parameters that can be used to safely create circumscribed foci of brain necrosis while selectively preserving major vascular structures.

ABSTRACT

High severity of Alternaria blight disease is a major constraint in production of rapeseed-mustard in India. The aim of this study was to investigate the suppressive potential of chemicals viz., zinc sulphate, borax, sulphur, potash and calcium sulphate, aqueous extracts viz., Eucalyptus globosus (50 g l-1) leaf extract and garlic (Allium sativum) bulb (20 g l-1) extract, cow urine and bio-agents Trichoderma harzianum, Pseudomonas fluorescence in comparison with the recommended chemical fungicide (mancozeb), against foliar disease Alternaria blight of Indian mustard [Brassica juncea (L.) Czern. and Coss] under five different geographical locations of India. Mancozeb recorded the lowest mean severity (leaf: 33.1%; pod: 26.3%) of Alternaria blight with efficacy of garlic bulb extract alone (leaf = 34.4%; pod = 27.3%) or in combination with cow urine (leaf = 34.2%; pod = 28.6%) being statistically at par with the recommended chemical fungicide. Chemicals also proved effective in reducing Alternaria blight severity on leaves and pods of Indian mustard (leaf = 36.3- 37.9%; pod = 27.5-30.1%). The effective treatments besides providing significant reduction in disease severity also enabled increase in dry seed yield of the crop (mancozeb = 2052 kg ha-1; garlic = 2006 kg ha-1; control = 1561 kg ha-1).

Objetivo: Estimar la prevalencia para 2006 de HIV/sida entre población general de 15 a 49 años de edad y en los grupos de riesgo, en la ciudad de Tijuana, México. Métodos: Se obtuvieron datos demográficos del censo mexicano de 2005 y la prevalencia del VIH, de la literatura. Se construyó un modelo de prevalencia del VIH para la población general y de acuerdo con el género. El análisis de sensibilidad consistió en estimar los errores estándar del promedio-ponderado de la prevalencia del VIH y tomar derivados parciales respecto a cada parámetro. Resultados: La prevalencia del VIH resultó ser de 0.54% (N = 4,347) (rango 0.22-0.86% [N = 1750-6944]). Esto sugiere que 0.85% (rango 0.39-1.31%) de los hombres y 0.22% (rango 0.04-0.40%) de las mujeres podrían ser VIH-positivos. Los hombres que tienen sexo con hombres, las mujeres trabajadoras sexuales usuarias de drogas inyectables (UDI), las mujeres trabajadoras sexuales-no UDI, mujeres- UDI y los hombres-UDI, contribuyeron a las proporciones más elevadas de personas infectadas por el VIH. Conclusiones: El número de adultos VIH-positivos entre subgrupos de riesgo en la población de Tijuana es considerable, lo que denota la necesidad de enfocar las intervenciones de prevención en sus necesidades específicas. El presente modelo estima que hasta uno de cada 116 adultos podría ser VIH-positivo.


OBJECTIVE: Estimate the 2006 HIV prevalence among adults aged 15-49 from the general population and at-risk subgroups in Tijuana, Mexico. METHODS: Demographic data was obtained from the 2005 Mexican census and HIV prevalence data was obtained from reports in the literature. We developed a population-based HIV prevalence model for the overall population and stratified it by gender. Sensitivity analysis consisted of estimating standard errors in the weighted-average point prevalence and calculating partial derivatives of each parameter. RESULTS: HIV prevalence among adults was 0.54% (N = 4347) (range 0.22-0.86% [N = 1750-6944]). This suggests that 0.85% (range 0.39-1.31%) of men and 0.22% (0.04-0.40%) of women could have been HIV-infected in 2006. Men who have sex with men (MSM), followed by female sex workers who are injection drug users (FSW-IDU), FSW-non IDU, female IDU, and male IDU were the most at risk groups of infected individuals. CONCLUSIONS: The number of HIV-infected adults among at-risk subgroups in Tijuana is significant, highlighting the need to design tailored prevention interventions that focus on the specific needs of certain groups. According to our model, as many as 1 in 116 adults could potentially be HIV-infected.

ABSTRACT

Autism is a perplexing developmental disorder that presents itself in a variety of behavioral disorders. Research indicates that through early intervention and appropriate treatment these behaviors can be improved. This article reviews and critiques several of the current treatment programs for children with autism. These include Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA), TEACCH,Sign Language, Facilitated Communication, Piture Exchange Comminication System (PECS), Object Exchange, Auditory Integration Therapy (AIT), and augmentative communication. When appropriate, the treatments were reviewed for their abilities to increase attention, imitation and initiation, social interaction and intentional communication, language development, and emotional regulation. The article, hopefully, provides parents and professionals a clearer choice as to what treatment is most appropriate for which child and when to use them.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: B-1 cells differ from conventional B-2 cells both phenotypically and functionally. The aim of this study was to investigate the difference between peritoneal B-1 cells and splenic B-2 cells in proliferation. METHODS: We obtained sorted B-1 cells from peritoneal fluid and B-2 cells from spleens of mice. During the culture of these cells, immunoglobulin secreted into the culture supernatants was evaluated by enzyme- linked immunosorbent assay. Entering of S phase in response to LPS-stimuli was measured by proliferative assay. RESULTS: Spontaneous Immunoglobulin M production occurred in peritoneal B-1 cells but not in splenic B-2 cells. LPS stimulated peritoneal B-1 cells secreted IgM at day 1, but splenic B-2 cells at day 2. In thymidine incorporation, peritoneal B-1 cells entered actively S phase after 24hours LPS-stimulation but splenic B-2 cells entered actively S phase after 48 hours. CONCLUSION: IgM secretion and S phase entering occurred early in peritoneal B-1 cells compared to splenic B-2 cells.

ABSTRACT

The use of in situ techniques to detect DNA and RNA sequences has proven to be an invaluable technique with paraffin-embedded tissue. Advances in non-radioactive detection systems have further made these procedures shorter and safer. We report the detection of Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease, via indirect and direct in situ polymerace chain reaction within paraffin-embedded murine cardiac tissue sections. The presence of three T. cruzi specific DNA sequences were evaluated: a 122 base pair (bp) sequence localized within the minicircle network, a 188 bp satellite nuclear repetitive sequence and a 177 bp sequence that codes for a flagellar protein. In situ hybridization alone was sensitive enough to detect all three T. cruzi specific DNA sequences
