ABSTRACT

Earlier onset of puberty has become a worldwide trend.A large number of epidemiologic and animal experiment evidences have indicated that environmental changes in the early life may influence development plasticity and cause structural and functional changes, which are correlated with adult chronic diseases. The impact of fluctuations in environmental factors on the reproductive phenotype of offspring has been well concerned in recent years. This review summarizes the influences of nutritional state, endocrine disrupting chemicals, hormonal perturbation and stressful events during the prenatal and early childhood on the puberty initiation, especially neuroendocrine changes in puberty, thus providing a new idea for the prevention and control of pubertal disorders.

ABSTRACT

Objective To establish a rapid qualitative analysis method for volatile organic components in chemicals. Methods Headspace gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was used to qualitatively determine 19 volatile organic components, including benzene, 1,2-dichloroethane, and n-hexane, in chemicals. Different sample amounts, heating temperatures, heating times, and sample volumes were analyzed to assess their effects on detection results and optimize sampling conditions. Results Based on the set chromatography, the optimal sampling process of this method was as follows: 5.0 g sample in a 20.0 mL headspace bottle, incubated at 40 ℃ for 30 minutes in a constant-temperature drying incubator, and a 1.00 mL headspace gas injection. The within-run and between-run relative standard deviations of all components ranged from 0.00% to 21.05% and 0.00% to 33.33%, respectively. The samples stored in sealed glass containers were stable at room temperature for at least 60 days. Conclusion This method offers simplicity, good reproducibility, and stability, making it suitable for rapid qualitative analysis of volatile organic components in chemicals.

ABSTRACT

Methanol has become an attractive substrate for the biomanufacturing industry due to its abundant supply and low cost. The biotransformation of methanol to value-added chemicals using microbial cell factories has the advantages of green process, mild conditions and diversified products. These advantages may expand the product chain based on methanol and alleviate the current problem of biomanufacturing, which is competing with people for food. Elucidating the pathways involving methanol oxidation, formaldehyde assimilation and dissimilation in different natural methylotrophs is essential for subsequent genetic engineering modification, and is more conducive to the construction of novel non-natural methylotrophs. This review discusses the current status of research on methanol metabolic pathways in methylotrophs, and presents recent advances and challenges in natural and synthetic methylotrophs and their applications in methanol bioconversion.

ABSTRACT

The synthesis of fine chemicals using multi-enzyme cascade reactions is a recent hot research topic in the field of biocatalysis. The traditional chemical synthesis methods were replaced by constructing in vitro multi-enzyme cascades, then the green synthesis of a variety of bifunctional chemicals can be achieved. This article summarizes the construction strategies of different types of multi-enzyme cascade reactions and their characteristics. In addition, the general methods for recruiting enzymes used in cascade reactions, as well as the regeneration of coenzyme such as NAD(P)H or ATP and their application in multi-enzyme cascade reactions are summarized. Finally, we illustrate the application of multi-enzyme cascades in the synthesis of six bifunctional chemicals, including ω-amino fatty acids, alkyl lactams, α, ω-dicarboxylic acids, α, ω-diamines, α, ω-diols, and ω-amino alcohols.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To analyze the case characteristics of Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease caused by occupational irritant chemicals (OI-COPD). To provide basis for revising its diagnostic criteria. Methods: From June to December 2021, we investigated the information of OI-COPD patients confirmed by Shandong Institute of Occupational Health and Prevention of Occupational Diseases, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Institute of Occupational Disease Prevention and Control, Qingdao Central Hospital affiliated to Qingdao University and other diagnostic institutions in the past five years, a total of 41 cases. The basic information of OI-COPD cases, occupational risk factors exposure information, medical history, smoking history and clinical symptoms were analyzed retrospectively. The measurement data were tested for normal distribution, which was described by x±s, and compared between groups by t test; Those who do not conform to the normal distribution are described by the median [M (Q(1), Q(3)) ] and analyzed by nonparametric test; The counting data were expressed in frequency and rate (% ), and the comparison between groups was tested. Results: Of the 41 cases, 33 were male and 8 were female. The age of the patient diagnosed with OI-COPD was (49.5±10.3) years old, and the minimum age was 30 years old; Among them, 8 patients had a definite long-term smoking history (more than 5 years) ; The exposure duration of occupational risk factors was (18.6±10.3) years, of which 3 patients had exposure duration of less than 5 years; The occupational risk factors leading to OI-COPD include acids and acid-forming compounds, bases, aldehydes, nitrogen oxides, chlorine and its compounds, etc. The exposure level of occupational risk factors is related to the degree of COPD airflow restriction (χ(2)=6.17, P <0.05). 18 patients with diagnosis age <50 years old were diagnosed as early-onset COPD. The incidence of respiratory symptoms in the early diagnosis COPD group was lower than that in the non-early diagnosis COPD group, and the FEV1% pred was significantly higher than that in the non-early diagnosis COPD group. The difference was statistically significant (P<0.01 ) . Conclusion: The exposure level of occupational risk factors may be the risk factor affecting the degree of COPD airflow restriction. With the increase of the exposure level of COPD patients, the proportion of respiratory symptoms will also increase accordingly.

ABSTRACT

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) an exogenous agent that interferes with the synthesis, secretion, transport, binding, action, or can mimic the occurrence of natural hormones that damage for the balance of homeostasis. Exposure to EDCs results in damage to human health that may persist in the long term. In recent years, accumulative evidence has demonstrated that EDCs also play a pivotal role in the onset and development of myocardial fibrosis, including heart failure, hypertension and vascular stiffening. Studies indicate that EDCs plays the negative effects of the cardiovascular system, however, EDCs-induced toxicity on heart remains unclear. This review summarized EDCs-induced myocardial fibrosis, and discuss the possible mechanisms of myocardial fibrosis induced by EDCs. This paper could provide further understandings for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of myocardial fibrosis.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND@#The Hokkaido Study on Environment and Children's Health is an ongoing study consisting of two birth cohorts of different population sizes: the Sapporo cohort and the Hokkaido cohort. Our primary objectives are to (1) examine the effects that low-level environmental chemical exposures have on birth outcomes, including birth defects and growth retardation; (2) follow the development of allergies, infectious diseases, and neurobehavioral developmental disorders, as well as perform a longitudinal observation of child development; (3) identify high-risk groups based on genetic susceptibility to environmental chemicals; and (4) identify the additive effects of various chemicals, including tobacco.@*METHODS@#The purpose of this report is to provide an update on the progress of the Hokkaido Study, summarize recent results, and suggest future directions. In particular, this report provides the latest details from questionnaire surveys, face-to-face examinations, and a collection of biological specimens from children and measurements of their chemical exposures.@*RESULTS@#The latest findings indicate different risk factors of parental characteristics on birth outcomes and the mediating effect between socioeconomic status and children that are small for the gestational age. Maternal serum folate was not associated with birth defects. Prenatal chemical exposure and smoking were associated with birth size and growth, as well as cord blood biomarkers, such as adiponectin, leptin, thyroid, and reproductive hormones. We also found significant associations between the chemical levels and neuro development, asthma, and allergies.@*CONCLUSIONS@#Chemical exposure to children can occur both before and after birth. Longer follow-up for children is crucial in birth cohort studies to reinforce the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease hypothesis. In contrast, considering shifts in the exposure levels due to regulation is also essential, which may also change the association to health outcomes. This study found that individual susceptibility to adverse health effects depends on the genotype. Epigenome modification of DNA methylation was also discovered, indicating the necessity of examining molecular biology perspectives. International collaborations can add a new dimension to the current knowledge and provide novel discoveries in the future.

ABSTRACT

Biosafety in dentistry aims to combat cross-contamination and biofilm on dental unit waterlines. The aim of this study was to investigate, from a physical, chemical, mechanical, and biological perspective, a protocol for the use of chemical products with possible applicability in dental unit waterlines to improve and maintain water quality. The protocol with chemicals (Product A - citric acid + sodium chloride; Product B - sodium bicarbonate + sodium chloride; Product AB - citric acid + sodium bicarbonate + sodium chloride) was used in stainless steel specimens which, later, were subjected to microhardness and corrosion tests. Moreover, color, microhardness, roughness and antibiofilm activity tests [total biomass (crystal violet), metabolic activity (XTT), viability by means of fluorescent dye and confocal laser scanning microscopy, as well as structural morphology of biofilm by scanning electron microscopy (SEM)] were performed on polyurethane specimens. The standard strains used to assess monospecies antibiofilm activity were Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 29923) and Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922). Regarding the microhardness change in stainless-steel, after simulated immersion for 1 and 2 years in Products (A+B+AB), there was no difference in the results with the control group (water). After exposure to the products and control group, most stainless-steel samples showed a tendency to corrosion. Furthermore, there were changes in color, microhardness, and roughness on the polyurethane surfaces after simulated immersion for 1 and 2 years of the products and the control group. Biofilm biomass evaluation indicated that Product A (p=0.003) and Product AB (p=0.019) significantly reduced P. aeruginosa biofilm compared to the control. On the other hand, the evaluation of the biomass of the biofilm formed by S. aureus suggested that Product B (p=0.018) promoted greater antibiofilm action. Regarding biofilms formed by E. coli, Product A (p=0.001) and the sequential use of Products A+B+AB (p=0.021) showed the best results. For XTT compared to the control, treatments with Product A (p=0.001), Product AB (p<0.001) and sequential use of Products A+B+AB (p=0.002) significantly reduced metabolic activity from the biofilm of P. aeruginosa. In the biofilm formed by S. aureus, contrary to the results observed in the biomass assessment, Product B did not promote significant changes in metabolic activity (Product A: p<0.001; Product AB: p=0.007; sequential use of Products A+B+ AB: p<0.001). Considering the biofilm formed by E. coli, it was observed that Product B (p=0.046), Product AB (p<0.001) and the sequential use of Products A+B+AB (p<0.001) promoted a metabolic activity reduction. There was a significant reduction in the total biofilm after using the products (p<0.001), compared to the control. Despite the significant reduction, residual biofilm aggregates were still observed, covering a large portion of the surfaces, even after using the products. Considering the amount of living cells of P. aeruginosa and E. coli, Product A and Product B, alone or together, showed similar results. In addition, Product AB and the sequential use of Products A+B+AB did not promote difference in the amount of living S. aureus cells, compared to the control, indicating that the combination of products did not enhance the antibiofilm activity. In conclusion, the products analyzed in this research showed innovative potential for facing the biofilm on dental unit waterline, preserving the physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of the materials.

ABSTRACT

To study the gene expression of cardiac mesenchymal cells in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM)based on a whole-genome high-throughput sequencing dataset, screen differentially expressed genes, analyze the genetics signature of cardiac mesenchymal cells in T2DM patients by bioinformatics analysis, and explore the environmental chemicals related to the key differentially expressed genes. The dataset GSE106177 was obtained from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. The dataset was pre-processed and analyzed by Network Analyst,Cytoscape 3.7.1,String11.0,CTD,and HMDD for screening for differentially expressed genes, enrichment analysis, establishment of protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks, and screening for relevant environmental chemicals. The gene expression pattern of cardiac mesenchymal cells in T2DM patients was significantly different from that in the control group. There were 135 differentially expressed genes,of which 58 (42.96%) were up-regulated and 77 (57.04%) were down-regulated.The differentially expressed genes mainly participated in biological processes such as multicellular organism development, anatomical structure development, and system development and were mainly involved in hepatocellular carcinoma,Cushing's syndrome, and cholesterol metabolism.PPI network showed that UBC was the core protein node. The microRNA-Gene interaction network showed that seven microRNAs,represented by hsa-mir-8485,interacted with the differentially expressed genes.Key T2DM related genes such as UBC,DNER,and CNTN1 interacted with bisphenol A. The gene expression profile of cardiac mesenchymal cells markedly changes in T2DM patients, during which UBC may play an important biological role.Bisphenol A exposure may also affect the development and normal function of cardiac cells in T2DM patients.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Rhinitis was the most frequently diagnosed disorder among users of humidifier disinfectants (HDs). The aim of our study was to investigate on the relationship between allergic rhinitis (AR) and HD uses.METHODS: Our study used the data from the eighth Panel Study on Korean Children; a total of 1,540 participants were enrolled. The χ² test and multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted to debunk the association between AR and HD uses.RESULTS: In our analysis, odds ratios (ORs) of doctor-diagnosed AR increased significantly when simply the response of whether HDs were used in the past was considered. When the brands of HD were considered, ORs of doctor-diagnosed AR were found to be increased significantly for those who have used polyhexamethylene guanidine phosphate/oligo(2-[2-ethoxy]-ethoxyethyl)guanidinium-containing HDs (model 3: 1.41, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.02–1.95). However, once duration of usage was additionally considered, ORs of doctor-diagnosed AR increased significantly only for those who have used chloromethylisothiazolinone/methylisothiazolinone-containing HDs for more than or equal to 3 months (model 3: 2.08, 95% CI: 1.17–3.69). Further, past use of HD was associated with significantly increased ORs of AR diagnosed before 2013 (model 3: 1.35, 95% CI: 1.02–1.79).CONCLUSIONS: Results of our study suggest that past uses of HDs may be associated with an increased risk of AR.

ABSTRACT

The advent of the bioeconomy era is triggers a new wave of technology and industrial revolution. Bioeconomy has become the commanding heights that major developed countries and emerging economies try to seize. This paper analyzes the spatiotemporal characteristics of global bioindustry development from four perspectives: biomedical industry, genetically modified crop planting industry, bioenergy industry, and bio-based chemical industry. Then it summarizes the main characteristics of the development of the global bioindustry, and further put forward policy recommendations for the bottleneck problems in the development of China's bioindustry, which can guide the future development of China's bioeconomy.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Responsible management of hazardous chemical products has direct relation with the knowledge, comprehension and perception of the risk that the individuals involved have. Objective: To evaluate the safety level in the management of hazardous chemical products in Mantilla community, Havana, Cuba and compare it with the assessment performed in Pogolotti-Finlay-Belén community of the same province, from 2013 to 2015. Methods: Exploratory-descriptive research conducted in Mantilla community, Arroyo Naranjo municipality, Havana, Cuba in 2016, over a population of 1338 systematic practitioners in the handling of hazardous chemical products. The sample was of 200 people; and it was non-probabilistically and intentionally selected. An exhaustive checklist was prepared for applying the safety level assessment method with specific objectives and contents for the community. The safety aspects were assessed, the risk profile was determined by using ASeC software, and a sensitivity analysis for Mantilla community was performed. A comparison of the sensitivity analysis results was also carried out for both Mantilla and Pogolotti-Finlay-Belén communities using the Venn diagram. Results: The results by safety aspects of Mantilla community were assessed with negative values. When compared them with the results obtained on a previous research in the Pogolotti-Finlay-Belén community, some irrelevant differences where obtained. Conclusions: The hazard focus identification in Mantilla community became critical. Both communities didn't show functional capability for facing an emergency, and they didn't know what actions and consequences could have an accident related to hazardous chemical products in the population and the environment(AU)

ABSTRACT

Corneal injuries remain an important cause of avoidable and, predominantly, monocular visual morbidity, themain strategy to prevent these injuries has been to educate people to identify high-risk situations and to takecorrect action to avoid danger. Present study conducted in the department of ophthalmology of Raichur instituteof Medical sciences teaching Hospital, with 49 patients of ocular trauma above 14 years of either sex wassubjected to slit lamp examination to ensure the cornea is involved the etiology of the injury was noted. Then thepattern of the corneal injury was studied under the slit lamp examination. The Prevalence of corneal blindnesswas 10.20% (5) were had corneal blindness in both eyes and 24.49% (12) were had corneal blindness in one eyein Raichur. The majority of corneal injuries are avoidable. Eye health promotion strategies are warranted toraise awareness about the causes and prevention of corneal blindness.

ABSTRACT

Background: Poisoning is an important public health problem, causing significant morbidity and mortality throughout the world. Currently limited data available in UAE regarding the incidence, type of poison, management and outcome of poisoning cases both in adults and children are very limited. The present study focused to assess the type, clinical characteristics, nature and outcome of poisoning cases in two secondary and Tertiary Care Hospitals of U.A.E.Methods: This was a prospective observational study conducted in two hospitals of northern emirates of U.A.E. Patient case notes related to hospital admissions due to poisoning were identified and reviewed by the study investigator. Various details such as patient demographic characteristics, type, clinical characteristics, management and outcome of poisoning were entered into a suitably designed data collection form. The collected data were analyzed using poison severity and snakebite severity assessment scales. Results: A total of 97 poisoning cases was identified during the study period. The prevalence of poisoning among male (50.5%) and female (49.5%) was found to be almost similar. The majority of poisoning cases 55 (56.7%) was of accidental type. The most common type of agent responsible for poisoning was drugs 61 (62.9%). Paracetamol was the most common drug involved in poisoning 16 (26.2%). The outcome of the poisoning was a recovery in majority 96 (98.9%) of the cases. Demographic factors such as gender, age, nationality and occupation were found to be significantly (p<0.05) associated with the intention and type of poisoning agent. Conclusions: The study concluded that the most common poisoning agent involved in poisoning was drugs. The majority of the poisoning cases were of accidental type. The outcome of the poisoning was a recovery in the majority of the cases and no mortality were reported.
