ABSTRACT

By combing the application and funding situation of general, young scholar and regional scholar programs from National Natural Science Foundation of China(NSFC) in field of integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine in 2023, this paper summarizes the distribution of supporting units, application and funding hotspots, and the problems of application and funding projects in this discipline, in order to provide a reference for applicants and supporting organizations to understand the hotspot dynamics and reporting requirements of the discipline. In 2023, the discipline of integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine received a total of 2 793 applications, and there were 1 254 applications for general programs, 1 278 applications for young scholar programs, and 261 applications for regional scholar programs. The amounts of project funding obtained by the three were 145, 164 and 35, respectively, and the funding rates were 11.56%, 12.83% and 13.41% in that order. From the situation of obtaining funding, the age distribution of the project leaders who obtained funding for the general, young scholar and regional scholar programs were mainly distributed in the age of 40-46, 30-34, 38-44 years, respectively. Within the supported programs, the Chinese medicine affiliations accounted for 55.52%. With respect to research subjects, the proportion of one single Chinese herbs, or monomers, or extracts accounted for 29.4%, but the proportion of Chinese herb pairs or prescriptions accounted for 47.1%. Research hotspots included ferroptosis, bile acid metabolism, macrophages, mitochondria, microglia, exosomes, intestinal flora, microecology and so on. The current research mainly focused on the common key problems of the advantageous diseases of Chinese and western integrative medicine, but still need to be improved in the basic theories of Chinese and western medicine and multidisciplinary cross-disciplinary research.

ABSTRACT

Objective To summarize the project and fund of Pharmacy Administration from the NSFC during 2010 to 2021 and to provide references for the funding application. Methods The data and relevant documents which related to the projects status of Pharmacy Administration on the website of NSFC were collected and analyzed by Excel. Results There were more paths which were suitable to the Pharmacy Administration in NSFC. The direction and measure were expanded. There were more interdisciplinary researchers involved in Pharmacy Administration projects, while the funded organizations and regional distribution were concentrated. Conclusion The funding situation, research hotspots and basic information of applicants in recent years were summarized through statistical data of NSFC from 2010 to 2021, which suggest that the advantage, regional characteristics, cross-discipline and the policies should be concerned by the applicants .

ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the trend of psychiatry development by analyzing the funding of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) from 2011 to 2019, including key programs, general programs, young scientists funds, and talent programs, to provide a reference for the determination of research direction for researchers and the improvement of project management for research managers.Methods:The information on key programs, general programs, young scientists funds, and talent programs in psychiatry from 2011-2019 were retrieved from the NSFC management system and the NSFC result inquiry system of LetPub from 2011 to 2019 and analyzed for their research directions and contents.Results:Total of 947 programs in psychiatry were funded from 2011 to 2019, including 12 key programs, 396 general programs, 335 young scientists funds, and 35 talent programs. The approved programs showed a cyclical fluctuation trend from year to year. The numbers and funding of programs in psychiatry were significantly lower than those of other medical disciplines. The research content gradually changed from basic research to applied basic research. The approved programs were mainly concentrated in research institutions in Beijing and Shanghai. The requirements for program leaders and supporting institutions varied for different program types.Conclusions:NSFC promotes the overall development of research levels in psychiatry with an increasing demand for applied basic research and uneven development of research levels in different regions. Psychiatric talent training and discipline construction need to be strengthened urgently.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the countermeasures to strengthen hospital scientific research management and prevent research misconduct by studying the characteristics of research misconduct cases investigated by the NSFC in recent three years.Methods:Information of a total number of 67 research misconduct cases in 6 batches that publicly reported by the NSFC from 2019 to 2021 were collected, classified statistics were conducted on the situation of the supporting units involved, the specific issues of Misconduct and the disciplinary measures of the NSFC. According to the frequency proportion of misconduct problems, the tendency characteristics and reasons were analyzed and summarized, countermeasures and suggestions were put forward.Results:96.36% of the main responsibility entity of research misconduct was individuals, and 3.63% of the main responsibility of relying institution. There were 62 cases of research misconduct due to scientific papers and applications, accounted for 92.50%. Among the problematic papers involved, data fraud accounted for 48.20%, false signature or unauthorized signature accounted for 35.97%, plagiarism accounted for 32.37%, and unauthorized marking of other people′s fund number accounted for 27.33%. The NSFC revoked 55 fund projects involved and recovered funds, 67 people were disqualified from applying for projects with a maximum of 7 years and a minimum of 2 years, and 2 peer-review experts were punished.Conclusion:Hospital scientific research management should draw lessons from others, and put forward specific countermeasures from the aspects of strengthening scientific research integrity education, improving the construction of supervision mechanism, strictly implementing process management and perfecting scientific research credit evaluation system, in order to provide possible reference for preventing misconduct in hospital scientific research management practice.

ABSTRACT

Objective:According to the analysis of the research field of tumor genetics and epigenetics from 2015 to 2019 funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), which covered the General Program, Young Science Fund project and Fund for Less Developed Regions, to provide possible references for researchers′ research content selection, and also for the administration of research performance.Methods:Searching the project information of H1603 tumor genetics and epigenetics funded during 2015 to 2019 from the management information system.Results:During the five-year period time, the total number of General Program and Young Science Fund project funded annually by NSFC in the field of tumor genetics and epigenetics had fluctuated to a certain extent, and the funded projects of Youth Science Fund project were firstly greater than General Program in the year 2019. The projects in tumor epigenetics were more than tumor genetics in general, and gene methylation, histone modification and non-coding RNA were the main research fields in the projects funded by NSFC in tumor epigenetics.Conclusions:The research in the tumor genetics and epigenetics funded by NSFC increased rapidly, the content of the research was more diversified and the research hotspot also gradually converted, however, the research based on high-level technology and experiment platform was still need to be improved.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To analyze the main related factors for undertaking the NSFC project among the in-service master and doctor in a third-grade First-class hospital in 2020.Methods:By collecting and comparing the age of the target population, the type of education and degree, SCI papers publication and experience as principal investigator of scientific research projects and other variables, the factors affecting the commitment of the NSFC project were analyzed.Results:A total of 743 feedbacks from the people with master′s degree and doctor′s degree in this survey, 69 of whom had undertaken the NSFC project (accounting for 9.3% of the total number). By the univariate analysis, age, education, age more than 55 years old, professional Dr. and academic Dr., published SCI paper publication, JCR1/JCR2/JCR3/JCR4 publication and experience as principal investigator of scientific research project should significantly improve the opportunity of undertaking the NSFC project. The multivariate analysis results show that the main factors influencing the commitment of the NSFC project are the professional Dr., the academic Dr. and having hosted projects.Conclusions:Professional or academic doctors and experience as principal investigator of scientific research projects have significant advantages in undertaking the NSFC project. Medical institutions should fully consider the advantages of different types of scientific research personnel and make clear their differences in professional fields, in order to develop more targeted programs to improve the capacity for scientific research.

ABSTRACT

Objective:By analyzing National Natural Science Foundation of China′s (NSFC′s) application and funding situations of the key program in the field of oncology from 2014 to 2018, taking into considerations of the Project areas funded each year, to explore the development trends of oncology research, from which might inform the selection of research areas and content for both researchers and research administrative personnel.Methods:Searching the key program information funded by Division VII of Health Sciences (Oncology Division) from the management information system during the period of 2014 and 2018.Results:During the five years, a total number of 472 key program applications were received by the Oncology Division, among which 74 were funded with total funding of 217.32 million RMB. Twenty-one Project areas were approved with concentration on the occurrence, development of tumors, as well as the tumor therapies.The funded number of different project areas varied a lot.Conclusions:The key scientific problems and the focus areas of oncology research that need to be solved urgently in China were revealed by the Project areas of key program. Although the high-level basic and applied basic research were evolving fast, some research areas that not well studied yet still need to pay more attention, more combination of basic and applied basic research should be developed, to further improve the transformation effectiveness of basic research.

ABSTRACT

Objective To improve the efficiency and accuracy of formality examination of the National Natural Science Fund Project (hereinafter referred to as formality examination).Methods According to the practice,we find that Combine Files of Adobe Acrobat Pro software,which relies on the large data of internet-based Science information system (hereinafter referred to as the system) can quickly search and examine the various problems in the application.Results In previous years,we examined the PDF version or hard copy of the application form of NSFC according to the list of questions about formality examination.It is easy for the examiner to miss the examination due to fatigue after long time working which resulted in many amendments by the applicant.Relying on the above two technologies,we redesigned and constructed a three-level formality examination process,reduced the burdens of examiner,and also greatly improved the efficiency and accuracy of formality examination.Conclusions Finding and using the right tools can lead to amazing productivity gains in boring management.

ABSTRACT

To analyze statistically the situation of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) from 2007 to 2016 in the field of acupuncture and moxibustion for supporting the national Universities colleges of traditional Chinese medicine on the General Program (GP) and the National Science Fund for Young Scholars (NSFYS). In view of five aspects, named fund, supporting units, key words, method, disorder and signal path, the differences were compared between GP and NSFYS, the following characteristics were summarized. ① The fund aid was increased from 2007 through 2013 and down-regulated from 2013 through 2016. In recent ten years, the funding condition was fluctuated, but increasing in tendency generally. ② The relevant projects of the same research direction had been approved continuously for over 3 years in a part of TCM universities, in which, the research continuity was the hot topic. ③ Regarding the therapeutic methods, acupuncture was the chief therapy; electroacupuncture, moxibustion and acupoints were involved as well. ④ The disorders involved in the research were cerebral ischemia, myocardial ischemia and reperfusion injury. It is suggested that the ischemic disorder is predominated in the research. ⑤ The signal path occupied the main research index system, including cell proliferation, metabolism, immune, apoptosis and autophagy. The researches on the other aspects were less.

ABSTRACT

Objective For searching the influence factors of young medical scientists' growth,we analyze their characteristics and patterns of the growth.It could provide a reference for the policy to absorb and cultivate young talents.Methods Research subjects were the young scientists that had worked in Fujian Medical University all the time since he or she obtained the Fujian Provincial Natural Science Foundation form 2001 to 2012.We analyzed the basic information of the project leader,their research funding situation and SCI paper publishing,as well as their NSFC funding.Results It found that obtain the highest degree from famous colleges did not help young scientists.1/3 clinicians did not make progress in their research.Young scientists who obtain the NSFC after entry Fujian Medical University were much easier to join in the mainstream discipline of school and rapid growth.Conclusions The academic growth of the medical young scientists is not only rely on individual early academic accumulation and efforts,but also the support of NSFC and research platform.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the scientific development direction in medical institutions under the new health care reform,and provide a reference for promotion of scientific innovation and development of medical institutions in Beijing.Methods Through analyzing the fund of Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) in 2016,scientific competitive power of medical institutions in Beijing was explored from the aspect of project type,subject classification and talent training.Results The NSFC by medical institutions in Beijing mainly focused on medical science department (92.68%),of which corresponding subjects were mainly oncology,neural and mental disease and traditional Chinese medicine.The project approved rates of tertiary hospitals subordinate to country and Beijing were 43.46% and 29.22%,respectively.Only a few dispersing talent projects were obtained.Conclusions Funds and approved rate of NSFC increased.Medical institutions in Beijing had relatively strong scientific competitive power in the fundamental researches of major and difficult diseases,and traditional Chinese medicine.Fundamental researches,talent training,research team building and international cooperation should be improved in the further.

ABSTRACT

The funding of Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) for acupuncture projects from 2005 to 2015 was summarized and analyzed. The results indicated during past 11 years, 711 projects regarding acupuncture were funded by NSFC, with a total of 281 million RMB, accounting for 12.39% in TCM projects. It was concluded the funding for acupuncture projects was increased year by year, but was still relatively weak; in addition, the funding was unbalanced in different areas and organizations, mainly in Beijing, Shanghai, Sichuan, Guangdong, Tianjin, and the continuity and variability both existed in research content and direction.

Based on the project data and SCI output data of 5431 projects supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) in oncology from 2008 to 2012,this paper took advantage of the Web of Science database,studied the number of papers published and the citations per paper of different research fields in oncology,different subcategories of projects,top 20 institutions funded by NSFC.Based on the study findings,we tried to make some suggestions for the funding agency,researchers,as well as research management personnel for increase the effectiveness of funding use,improve the administration work and policy-making concerns.

ABSTRACT

Objective To summarize the present development by analysis of projects in schistosomiasis funded by National Science Foundation of China(NSFC). Methods Based on the ISIS database of NFSC,the projects in the studies of schistoso-miasis from 2005 to 2016 were analyzed. The distributions of sponsored numbers,amounts,types,agencies,disciplines and changes in research topics by means of network profiles were described. Results During the study period,198 projects were funded by NSFC totally with 76.05 million yuan in which the general and youth projects were main types. The main sponsored agencies were research institutes and medical colleges. The top three fields sponsored were medical pathogenic microbes and in-fection,veterinary and medical immunology. Conclusion The funding on schistosomiasis researches has a downward trend, but studies are continuing in depth. In this situation,innovative and interdisciplinary researches need to be encouraged to pro-mote the development of schistosomiasis.

ABSTRACT

Objective To analyze the research achievements and their outcome influence factors of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) funding projects in Peking University Cancer Hospital during the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan".Methods Based on project data and outcomes of 68 projects supported by NSFC from 2011 to 2015,this paper studies the number of SCI papers,Chinese Journal papers and conference papers published,the citations per paper and talent cultivation of different subcategories of projects,as well as different professional titles,academic degrees,genders,ages,occupations of the principle investigator,and component of project team members.Results 90% of the 68 projects published SCI papers,basically completed the intended research objectives set in the application.41.7% of the SCI papers were published in the 1-5 year after the project closure.Research team collaborated between clinical and scientific research staff has higher output.Conclusions Scientific research management department should strengthen the process management and the tracking of project achievements,and should promote the combination of basic and clinical research to achieve mutually complementary.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the role of National Natural Science Foundation (NSFC) funding on improving medical research of China,based on the SCIE paper output of a teaching hospital in East China,in order to provide evidence-based decision-making basis for hospital management of scientific research and discipline construction.Methods SCIE output of a teaching hospital in East China during 2009-2015 was retrieved based on the web of science (WOS) platform.The papers funded by the NSFC were further analyzed.Results From 2009 to 2015,the output of SCIE of the hospital showed a steady upward trend,with an annual growth rate of 26.10%.Among them,the NSFC funded project output 835 papers SCIE,accounting for 46.62%oo of the total paper;and the absolute value of the output of the paper showed an upward trend year by year,an increase of 49.52%.The main subjects of the NSFC funded by the hospital focus on oncology,liver disease and digestive system diseases and cardiovascular and cardiovascular diseases,and the hospital's clinical status basically.The quality of the journals published by the NSFC SCIE project funded by the hospital was significantly improved.Conclusions NSFC funding plays an important role in improving the output and quality of SCIE papers in clinical medicine,which should be paid attention to in scientific research management and decision-making.

Biomechanics, one important sub-discipline of mechanics, is an interdisciplinary subject involved in mechanics, biology and medical science, and it is closely associated with life health and clinic medicine. In this paper, applications and grants of normal projects and youth science foundation projects of National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) on biomechanics from year 2012 to 2016 are introduced. Research directions and research teams of biomechanics are mainly discussed, and some suggestions are given for the development of biomechanics in China.
