ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Under well-controlled conditions, changes in myoelectric signal activity can largely reflect muscle changes such as muscle function, muscle tension, muscle strength, and multi-muscle coordination, providing objective analysis of the muscle function. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the changes in surface electromyography (SEMG) of the lower limb muscles in cerebral palsy children standing or walking on tiptoes. METHODS: Using TELEMYO 2400R G2 SEMG telemeter produced by NORAXON Company in the United States, surface EMG features of bilateral anterior tibial muscles and medial gastrocnemius muscles were detected in 20 cerebral palsy children standing or walking on unilateral tiptoes. The myoelectric activity of the testicular muscles between the pointed and contralateral side was compared in all the subjects. The study protocol was approved by the Ethics Committee of Shanghai Ruijin Hospital, and all subjects and their guardians signed an informed consent prior to the participation in the study. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: When the subjects were standing and walking normally, the average SEMG amplitude and average SEMG integral of the medial gastrocnemius at the tiptoe side were significantly lower than those at the contralateral side (P < 0.05); the mean and median frequencies of the anterior tibial muscles and medial gastrocnemius muscles at the tiptoe side were significantly higher than those at the contralateral side (P < 0.05). These findings indicate that there are abnormal SEMG signals in the anterior tibial muscles and medial gastrocnemius muscles at the tiptoe side in children with cerebral palsy, and the muscle activity of the lower limbs in such children is not balanced. Therefore, SEMG is of practical value in evaluating the functional status of the neuromuscular system in children with cerebral palsy.

ABSTRACT

We aim to study the effect of Buyang Huanwu decoction (Astragali Radix, Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Paeoniae Radix Alba, Pheretima, Chuanxiong Rhizoma, Carthami Flos and Persicae Semen) on NF-κB/MuRFl signaling pathway in the denervated tibial muscle atrophy of rats and explore its protection mechanisms. Sixty Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to common peroneal nerve crush models of 5 mm injury, and then were randomly divided into six groups for daily intragastric administration of drugs: sham operation group, model group, Buyang Huanwu decoction high, middle and low dose groups, and mecobalamin group (as a positive control). After drug administration for 10 days and 21 days, the gene and protein expression levels of NF-κB and MuRFl in the tibial muscle of rats were detected by qRT-PCR and Western blot respectively. The results showed that, as compared with the model group, RNA and protein expression levels of NF-κB and MuRF1 were significantly reduced in Buyang Huanwu decoction middle and high-dose groups (P<0.05 or P<0.01). These results indicated that Buyang Huanwu decoction could inhibit ubiquitin proteasome system probably by activating NF-κB/MuRF1 signal pathway to protect the denervated tibial muscle atrophy of rats.

ABSTRACT

The tibialis anterior tendon functions as a major dorsiflexor of the ankle. A rupture in this tendon can cause serious problems in the ambulatory function. A closed traumatic rupture without open wound or an atraumatic rupture can delay diagnosis and treatment. There are not enough guidelines for an effective surgical treatment on this chronic condition. Herein, we report two cases of chronic tibialis anterior disruption successfully treated by semitendinosus autograft.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To explore the influence of buyang huanwu decoction (BYHWD) on the denervated tibial muscle atrophy of rats and to study the mechanisms of BYHWD defering denervated muscle atrophy of rats. METHODS: Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to common peroneal nerve crush model, then they were randomly divided into sham operation group, model group, BYHWD high-dose, medium-dose, low-dose groups, mecobalamin group (positive control). Each group has ten rats. The gavage lasted for 18 d. After that, performed slice, staining and analysis morphology were performed. The wet weight ratio of tibial muscle was measured. At the same time, qRT-PCR and western-blot detect the differential expression of Angpt14 and PI3K in the high-dose group of BYHWD and model group. RESULTS: (1) Wet weight ratio: BYHWD high and medium-group increased significantly compared with model group (P<0.01 or P<0.05). (2) The motor end-plate: the sham operation group is sepia, oval or round; the BYHWD high-dose group and mecobalamin group has little chage; the BYHWD medium-dose group, low-dose group and the model group has lessen, shape is not rule gradually, the edge is rough, coloring is slight gradually, (3) the expression of Angpl14 and PI3K: compared with model group, the BYHWD high and medium-group increased significantly (P<0.05 or P<0.01). CONCLUSION: BYHWD can effectively delay denervated tibial muscle atrophy of rats by increasing the wel weight ratio and defering the degeneration of the motor end-plate which mechanism maybe increase Angpt14 and PT3K expression.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To screen the target gene of Buyang Huanwu Decoction (BHD) used for delaying denervated tibial muscle atrophy of rats by genechip technique and to verify the differentially expressed gene PI3K. Methods: After 20 Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were subjected to common peroneal nerve crush model of 5 mm injury, they were randomly divided into BHD and model groups, for daily ig administration of drugs after operation. The drug administration lasted for 18 d, the genechip analysis was performed to screen the differentially expressed gene. Then, RT-PCR and Western-blotting were used to detect the differential expression of PI3K and protein. Results: Compared with the model group, there was a significant difference of gene expression profile in BHD group. Among them, the expression of 14 genes had up-regulation and 10 genes had down-regulation. In the differential expression genes, Angptl4 and Pik3c2g had the more obvious change (up-regulation for 5-fold). Simultaneously, the validation tests showed: Compared with the model group, the PI3K mRNA and protein expression in the BHD mid- and high-dose (crude drug 12.96 and 25.92 g/kg) groups increased significantly (P < 0.05, 0.01). Conclusion: The preventive and therapeutic effects of BHD on denervated tibial muscle atrophy of rats are relevant with the regulation of many related genes. The mechanism may be as follows: promoting energy synthesis and blood neogenesis, neuroprotection, anti-apoptosis, and inhibition of collage synthesis; BHD could delay the denervated tibial muscle atrophy of rats by increasing the expression of PI3K and protein; The activation of PI3K/Akt signal transduction pathway probably play an important role in delaying the denervated muscle atropy by BHD.

ABSTRACT

Several techniques have been proposed as treatment for muscular injuries, and therapeutic ultrasound is one of the most used. Besides the effects of ultrasound, it also facilitates drug flow trough the tissues (phonophoresis). Calendula is a phytotherapic which presents healing elements, popularly used on injury treatments. The objective of this study was to evaluate ultrasound effectiveness, phonophoresis, and the influence of the topic application of the gel with Calendula officinalis extract, in the recovery from experimental muscular injury in rats. After the injured front tibial muscle was treated during five days, a histological analysis of the muscle was performed and the injury area was determined. The results indicated that all the ultrasound/Calendula-treated groups presented better evolution in the injury, sinasce they presented more fibroblasts, neovascularization and myoblasts in relation to the control group. As to the injured area, only the group in which the ultrasound was added to Calendula presented a significantly smaller area. In all, the obtained data demonstrate that in the experimental model studied, phonophoresis was more indicated for muscle injury treatment

ABSTRACT

Calcific amyloidoma of the soft tissue is quite rare and it is difficult to make a differential diagnosis from other lesions such as osteomyelitis or bone tumor. We encountered a case of a calcified amyloidoma found in the anterior tibial muscle that occurred more than 20 years after a proximal tibial fracture adjacent to the origin of the muscle. The features of the lesion resembled osteomyelitis. Satisfactory result was obtained by a thorough mass excision. We report this case with review of the relevant literature.
