ABSTRACT
Introducción: Los enjuagues bucales contribuyen a la inhibición de la formación de la placa bacteriana y, por tanto, pueden ayudar a mantener el pH salival cercano a neutro. Objetivo: Identificar cambios en el pH salival de pacientes portadores de aparatología ortodóncica fija, después del enjuague con una solución de Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni y un enjuague comercial de aceites esenciales. Métodos: Se realizó un experimento clínico con un diseño factorial mixto en pacientes portadores de aparatología ortodóncica fija. Una vez firmado el consentimiento informado, treinta y dos pacientes fueron asignados aleatoriamente a uno de 2 grupos: la solución de S. rebaudiana B. al 2 por ciento o un enjuague comercial de aceites esenciales. Se utilizaron 15 ml de enjuague durante 60 s en todos los pacientes. El pH salival fue medido por dos observadores independientes calibrados, utilizando papel medidor de pH antes del enjuague (medición basal) y después del enjuague, a los 5 y 20 min. Los datos fueron analizados mediante el ANOVA mixto. Resultados: Se encontró una interacción estadísticamente significativa entre el tipo de tratamiento y el momento de medición del pH. Los pH medio de los grupos S. rebaudiana y aceites esenciales fueron respectivamente en la medición basal: 6,61 y 6,52 (p = 0,72); a los 5 min: 7,61 y 7,77 (p = 0,40); y a los 20 min: 7,72 y 6,82 (p < 0,001). Conclusiones: Ambos enjuagues tenían el efecto de aumentar el pH salival a niveles alcalinos a los 5 min, pero solo el enjuague de S. rebaudiana B. al 2 por ciento mantuvo el pH básico a los 20 min(AU)
Introduction: Mouthwashes contribute to the inhibition of bacterial plaque formation and, therefore, may help to maintain salivary pH close to neutral. Objective: To identify changes in salivary pH in patients with fixed orthodontics after using a Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni solution and a commercial essential oil mouthwash. Methods: A clinical experiment with a mixed factorial design was carried out in patients with fixed orthodontic appliances. Once informed consent was signed, thirty-two patients were randomly assigned to one of 2 groups: 2 % S. rebaudiana B. solution or a commercial essential oil mouthwash. Fifteen ml of mouthwash was used for 60 s in all patients. Salivary pH was measured by two independent calibrated observers using pH-measuring paper before rinsing (basal measurement) and after rinsing, after 5 and 20 min. The data were analyzed by mixed ANOVA. Results: A statistically significant interaction was found between the type of treatment and the time of pH measurement. The medium pH of the S. rebaudiana and essential oil groups were respectively as per basal measurement: 6.61 and 6.52 (p = 0.72); after 5 min: 7.61 and 7.77 (p = 0.40); and after 20 min: 7.72 and 6.82 (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Both mouthwashes had the effect of increasing salivary pH to alkaline levels after 5 min, but only the 2 percent S. rebaudiana B. mouthwash maintained the basic pH after 20 min(AU)

Abstract Tetradenia riparia (Hochst.) Codd (Lamiaceae) is a species native to the African continent and used as an insect repellent. The objective of the study was to evaluate the larvicidal potential of essential oils (EOs) from the leaves, flower buds, and stem of T. riparia, collected in winter against Aedes aegypti larvae. The EOs were extracted by hydrodistillation (3 h) and identified by GC/MS. The EOs were tested against larvae of A. aegypti at concentrations ranging from 12500 to 1.5 µg/mL for 24 h. The insecticide activity was evaluated by probit analysis, and the anticholinesterase activity was determined by bioautographic method. The results of the class projection indicated sesquiterpenes as the majority class, corresponding to 60.66% (leaves), 64.70% (flower buds) and 83.99% (stem), and the bioassays on A. aegypti larvae indicated LC50 of 1590, 675 and 665 µg/mL, respectively. The anticholinesterase activity indicated that the EO of the leaves inhibited the enzyme at a concentration of 780 µg/mL, and those from the flower buds and stem inhibited up to 1560 µg/mL. The results indicated weak activity of essential oils against A. aegypti larvae.

Abstract The present research evaluated the anti urolithic potential of Cyperus rotundus tubers extract using in silico, in vitro and in vivo techniques. The molecular docking results could be used to optimize lead and develop the appropriate urolithiasis treatment.

Introduction: Minthostachys mollis is medicinal plant frequently used because of its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Objective: Identify the chemical composition of the essential oil from Minthostachys mollis and evaluate its antimicrobial properties against oral pathogens. Methods: The essential oil was extracted from the fresh leaves and branches of the plant by steam distillation method, and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry were performed to identify the principal constituents of the essential oils. Repetitions for the antimicrobial assay were calculated with the Epi info TM program. The antimicrobial activity was tested against Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212, Porphyromonas gingivalis ATCC 33277 and Candida albicans ATCC 10231 by disc diffusion assay and microdilution method, the minimum inhibitory concentration, minimum bacterial concentration and minimum fungal concentration were recorded. Results: The main compounds found were menthone (32.9 percent) and eucalyptol (28.1 percent). The essential oil of M. mollis demonstrated inhibition zones against E. Faecalis, P. gingivalis and C. albicans of 15.13 ± 0.39, 17.96 ± 0.21, and 20.82 ± 0.63 mm, respectively. There were significant differences on the inhibition zones between the three strains tested, being C. albicans the most sensible microorganism (p < 0.05). The minimum inhibitory concentration ranged from 1.05 to 2.11 µg/mL, the minimum bacterial concentration ranged from 2.11 to 4.23 µg/mL, and the minimum fungal concentration was 1.05 µg/mL. Conclusions: The essential oil of Minthostachys mollis showed as principal compounds menthone and eucalyptol and it has an important antimicrobial activity against E. faecalis, P. gingivalis and C. albicans(AU)
Introducción: Minthostachys mollis es una planta medicinal de uso frecuente por sus propiedades antiinflamatorias y antibacterianas. Objetivo: Identificar la composición química del aceite esencial de Minthostachys mollis y evaluar sus propiedades antimicrobianas frente a patógenos orales. Métodos: El aceite esencial se extrajo de las hojas y ramas frescas de la planta mediante el método de destilación al vapor; se realizó una cromatografía de gases-espectrometría de masas para identificar los principales constituyentes del aceite esencial. Las repeticiones del ensayo antimicrobiano se calcularon con el programa Epi infoTM. La actividad antimicrobiana se evaluó frente a Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212, Porphyromonas gingivalis ATCC 33277 y Candida albicans ATCC 10231 mediante ensayo de difusión en disco y método de microdilución. Se registró la concentración mínima inhibidora, la concentración mínima bactericida y la concentración mínima fungicida. Resultados: Los principales compuestos encontrados fueron mentona (32,9 por ciento) y eucaliptol (28,1 por ciento). El aceite esencial de M. mollis generó zonas de inhibición frente a E. Faecalis, P. gingivalis y C. albicans de 15,13 ± 0,39, 17,96 ± 0,21 y 20,82 ± 0,63 mm, respectivamente. Existió diferencias significativas en las zonas de inhibición entre las tres cepas, siendo C. albicans el microorganismo más sensible (p < 0,05). La concentración mínima inhibitoria varió de 1,05 a 2,11 µg/mL, la concentración mínima bacteriana varió de 2,11 a 4,23 µg/mL y la concentración mínima de hongos fue 1,05 µg/mL. Conclusiones: El aceite esencial de Minthostachys mollis mostró como compuestos principales mentona y eucaliptol y posee una importante actividad antimicrobiana contra E. faecalis, P. gingivalis y C. albicans.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of the essential oils of Syzygium aromaticum, Cymbopogon citratus, Eucalyptus citriodora and Rosmarinus officinalis on the mycelial development of the fungus Colletotrichum sp. in fragments of Feijoa sellowiana fruits. The essential oils were incorporated in the PDA (Potato-Dextrose-Agar) medium in the concentrations of 250, 500 and 1000 ppm, 0 ppm (PDA only) (negative control), and fungicide fluazinam 1% (positive control). The area under the mycelial growth curve (AUMGC) and percent inhibition of mycelial growth (PIMG) were calculated. In the second evaluation, fruits fragments bordering the disease symptom were immersed in essential oils aqueous solution of S. aromaticum, C. citratus, and E. citriodora, at the concentration of 5000 ppm, 0 ppm (water only - negative control) and fluazinam 1% (positive control). The immersion times in the treatments were: 2, 4, 8, 12 and 24 hours, with subsequent incubation in Agar-Agar medium at 25°C. This evaluation was performed daily for 15 days, observing the moment of fungal germination through the emission of the mycelium. It was verified from the obtained results that all treatments reduced the fungal growth, and the essential oils of C. citratus and S. aromaticum totally inhibited its growth from the dose 500 and 1000 ppm, respectively. Regarding the test on fruit fragments, the essential oil of S. aromaticum at the immersion times of 12 and 24 hours was effective in inhibiting the fungus until the 15th day of evaluation.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito antioxidante dos óleos essenciais de orégano e alfavacão sobre a estabilidade e perfil de ácidos graxos da gordura de palma utilizada no processamento industrial. Foram adicionados 100ug.g-1 de óleos essenciais em gordura de palma, que foi submetida a onze ciclos de fritura de batatas tipo chips. Amostras da gordura submetidas ao processamento foram analisadas quanto às características físico-químicas e perfil de ácidos graxos. Nas condições do estudo, não foi observado efeito dos óleos essenciais sobre a inibição na formação de compostos trans. Não houve alteração da relação de ácidos graxos poli-insaturados e ácidos graxos saturados da gordura. No entanto, a análise de peróxido indicou um efeito positivo do óleo essencial de alfavacão na redução da formação de radicais livres.

Los aceites esenciales (AEs), pertenecientes al geÌnero Lippia, son candidatos interesantes de formulaciones toÌpicas en el tratamiento de la leishmaniasis cutaÌnea (LC). El objetivo de este trabajo fue determinar el perfil toxicoloÌgico y la actividad anti-Leishmania de AEs obtenidos de plantas colombianas del geÌnero Lippia. Ratones BALB/c fueron tratados toÌpica u oralmente con AEs obtenidos de L. alba quimiotipo citral (AE1) y de L. origanoides quimiotipos timol (AE2), carvacrol (AE3) y felandreno (AE4). El efecto del tratamiento en la irritacioÌn de la piel, la toxicidad aguda oral, la genotoxicidad (prueba cometa y micronuÌcleos), los cambios en la funcioÌn hepaÌtica y renal, la induccioÌn de reaccioÌn de hipersensibilidad de contacto y en la actividad contra L. (V) panamensis y L. (V.) braziliensis fueron determinados. Todos los AEs presentaron un perfil toxicoloÌgico similar a los paraÌmetros normales, exceptuando los aceites AE2 y AE3 los cuales fueron irritantes y presentaron algunos signos de toxicidad aguda oral al ser utilizados en altas concentraciones (concentraciones bajas no fueron toÌxicas). El AE2 mostroÌ actividad antiparasitaria en las formas parasitarias evaluadas. Concentraciones bajas de los AEs podriÌan utilizarse de forma segura como componentes de formulaciones farmacoloÌgicas en LC.
Essential oils (EOs) belonging to the genus Lippia are interesting candidates in pharmaceutical systems for cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). The aim of this work was to determine both toxicological and antileishmanial activities of EOs obtained from different species of Lippia, a widely distributed Colombian plants. BALB/c mice were treated topically or orally with EOs obtained from L. alba citral chemotype (EO1) and L. origanoides thymol (EO2), carvacrol (EO3) and phellandrene (EO4) chemotypes. The skin irritation, oral acute toxicity, genotoxicity (comet assay and micronucleus test), liver and renal adverse effects, All the EOs showed a toxicological profile similar to the normal parameters, except for oils EO2 and EO3 which were irritant and showed some signs of acute oral toxicity at high concentrations (low concentration were safe). The EO2 showed antiparasitic activity. Low concentrations of the EO could be used safely as components of pharmacological formulations in CL.

Clinopodium gilliesii (Benth.) Kuntze, harvested in the Chilean highlands, contains a surprising 93.87% of the toxic monoterpene pulegone in the essential oil. These results show remarkable differences with studies of the same species carried out in Argentina and Peru. These dissimilarities in the monoterpene composition of essential oils should be associated with differences in toxicity and biological activity of this medicinal plant used in ethnomedicine in different countries for the treatment of similar discomforts and diseases. These results are discussed considering the risk of consuming C. gilliesii, without clear recommendations and control of at least pulegone content in essential oils.
Clinopodium gilliesii (Benth.) Kuntze, recolectada en el altiplano chileno, contiene un sorprendente 93,87% del monoterpeno toxico pulegona, en el aceite esencial. Estos resultados muestran diferencias notables con estudios de la misma especie realizados en Argentina y PeruÌ. Estas disimilitudes, en la composicioÌn de los aceites esenciales deben estar asociadas con diferencias en la toxicidad y actividad bioloÌgica de esta especie medicinal que se utiliza en etnomedicina en diferentes lugares para el tratamiento de molestias y enfermedades similares. Estos resultados se discuten considerando el riesgo de consumir C. gilliesii, sin recomendaciones claras y control de al menos el contenido de pulegona en los aceites esenciales.

O óleo da amêndoa de pequi (Caryocar brasiliense Camb.) é considerado um coproduto do fruto, consumido na região do Cerrado, bioma brasileiro. Ele é fundamental para agregar valor e ampliar a utilização deste fruto regional a outros setores produtivos comerciais. Relatos na literatura apontam que o óleo possui capacidade antioxidante e efeitos benéficos sobre doenças inflamatórias, que estão associados à presença de ácidos graxos insaturados e fitoquímicos em sua composição química. Por outro lado, o tetracloreto de carbono (CCl4) é uma potente hepatotoxina, capaz de gerar radicais livres que levam ao estresse oxidativo e à inflamação. Nesse contexto, o objetivo do presente estudo foi caracterizar os óleos da amêndoa de pequi obtidos artesanalmente e por prensagem a frio e verificar o efeito de seus constituintes graxos e bioativos sobre parâmetros oxidativos e inflamatórios de ratos submetidos à toxicidade aguda induzida por tetracloreto de carbono. Inicialmente, foram investigados os parâmetros de qualidade dos óleos, bem como o perfil de ácidos graxos, teores de compostos bioativos, capacidade antioxidante e estabilidade termo-oxidativa. Os óleos da amêndoa de pequi apresentaram boa qualidade e resistência termo-oxidativa e mostraram-se ricos em ácido graxo oleico, além de possuírem compostos com propriedades antioxidantes, como fenólicos, carotenoides, tocoferóis e fitosteróis. Posteriormente, o efeito do tratamento por 22 dias com óleos da amêndoa de pequi artesanal ou prensado a frio (3 mL/kg) sobre a toxicidade aguda induzida pelo CCl4 em ratos "Wistar" machos foi avaliado. Para tal, foram determinados marcadores bioquímicos séricos, perfil lipídico, peroxidação lipídica, marcadores do sistema de defesa antioxidante e detoxificante, além de parâmetros inflamatórios do tecido hepático. De maneira geral, verificou-se que os óleos da amêndoa de pequi não minimizaram as alterações hepáticas induzidas pelo CCl4, evidenciadas pelas enzimas marcadoras do dano hepático e por parâmetros inflamatórios, no entanto os animais tratados com o óleo prensado a frio aumentaram sua capacidade antioxidante
The pequi (Caryocar brasiliense Camb.) almond oil is considered a by-product of the fruit, consumed in the Brazilian savannah region. It is essential to add value and increase the use this regional fruit to other commercial productive sectors. The pequi almond oil has been reported to possess antioxidant capacity and beneficial effect on inflammatory diseases due its chemical composition in unsaturated fatty compounds and phytochemicals. On the other hand, the carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) is a potent hepatotoxin that is capable of generating free radicals and lead to oxidative stress and inflammation. In this context, the aim of this study was to characterize the pequi almond oils obtained by handmade and cold-press process and verify the effect of their fatty acids and bioactive constituents on oxidative and inflammatory parameters in rats submitted to carbon tetrachloride-induced acute toxicity. Initially, quality parameters, chemical composition and thermo-oxidative stability of the oils were investigated. The pequi almond oils showed good quality and thermo-oxidative resistance and shown to be rich in oleic fatty acid, besides the presence of compounds with antioxidant properties, such as phenolics, carotenoids, tocopherols and phytosterols. Subsequently, the effect of the oils (3 mL/kg) treatment for 22 days on acute toxicity induced by CCl4 in male Wistar rats was evaluated. The serum biochemical markers levels, lipid profile, lipid peroxidation, markers of antioxidant defense and detoxication and inflammatory parameters in liver tissue were determined. In general, it was found that the pequi almond oil not minimized liver alterations induced by CCl4, as evidenced by the liver function enzymes and the inflammatory parameters, however in animals which received the cold pressed oil was increased antioxidant capacity

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the essential oil of Lippia alba (EOLA) as a feed additive on ionoregulatory and metabolic parameters and pituitary hormones expression in silver catfish, Rhamdia quelen , submitted to a stressful condition (stocking density of 10.6 kg m-3 and limited space). Fish were fed with different concentrations of EOLA (0.0 - control, 0.25 and 0.50 mL kg food-1) for 20 days. Metabolic parameters were not affected by the diet, with the exception of alanine aminotransferase, which was higher in the liver of fish fed 0.50 mL EOLA kg food-1. Plasma ions and activity of H+-ATPase did not change, but fish fed 0.25 mL EOLA kg food-1 presented higher Na+/K+-ATPase activity. Somatolactin expression in the pituitary was higher in the fish fed 0.25 mL EOLA kg food -1, but the expression of growth hormone and prolactin did not change. Therefore, dietary EOLA does not exert a protective effect in R. quelen submitted to a stressful situation because it did not alter most measured parameters. The use of 0.25 mL EOLA kg food-1 seems to be more suitable than 0.50 mL EOLA kg food-1 since the latter may be related to liver damage.
O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito do óleo essencial de Lippiaalba (OELA) como aditivo em rações na ionoregulação, parâmetros metabólicos e expressão de hormônios hipofisários em jundiás, Rhamdiaquelen, submetidos a uma situação estressante (densidade de estocagem de 10,6 kg m-3 e espaço limitado). Os peixes foram alimentados com diferentes concentrações de OELA (0,0 - controle, 0,25 e 0,50 mL kg de ração-1) durante 20 dias. Parâmetros metabólicos não foram afetados pela dieta, com a exceção da alanina aminotransferase, que foi mais elevada no fígado dos peixes alimentados com 0,50 mL de OELA kg de ração-1. Íons plasmáticos e a atividade da H+-ATPase não apresentaram nenhuma alteração, mas os peixes alimentados com 0,25 mL OELA kg de ração-1 apresentaram maior atividade da Na+/K+-ATPase. A expressão da somatolactina na hipófise de peixes alimentados com 0,25 mL OELA kg de ração-1 aumentou, porém a expressão do hormônio de crescimento e da prolactina não mudou. Portanto, a adição do OELA na ração não tem um efeito protetor em jundiás submetidos a uma situação estressante, pois não influiu na maioria dos parâmetros medidos. O uso de 0,25 mL OELA kg de ração-1 parece ser mais adequado que 0,50 mL OELA kg de ração-1, uma vez que este nível de inclusão pode estar relacionado a danos hepáticos.

We report the case of a 48-year-old, Caucasian female who presented with slowly progressing asymptomatic poikilodermatous changes of the extensor aspects of the forearms. She also had typical Poikiloderma of Civatte on the V of the neck and erythemato-telangiectatic rosacea of the central face. The patient had been practicing aroma-therapy for many years. Histologic examination revealed findings consistent with PC. Patch-testing revealed positive reactions to Fragrance mix and Nickel sulphate. Based on clinical and histological findings, a diagnosis of extracervical PC was suggested. PC with extra-cervical or extra-facial involvement is rare. In addition, this case supports the theory that contact sensitization to fragrances may contribute to the development of PC.

Introducción: Schinus areira L., comúnmente conocido como "Aguaribay", "Gualeguay" o "Molle", pertenece a la familia Anacardiaceae, en donde se incluyen árboles ornamentales, arbustos y lianas, frutos y nueces comercialmente valiosas como el cajú o el pistacho. Objetivo: Obtener el aceite esencial de Schinus areira y su fracción en terpenos hidrocarburos para determinar sus efectos sobre la actividad cardiovascular y su acción en parámetros histopatológicos, bioquímicos y hematológicos en animales de experimentación. Materiales y Métodos: a) Se aisló el aceite esencial (AE) del Schinus areira por arrastre de vapor de agua y posteriormente a través de cromatografía de capa delgada, su fracción en terpenos hidrocarburos (FH); b) se cuantificó mediante cromatografía de masa la composición química del AE y de la FH; c) se determinó el efecto de ambos compuestos en parámetros histopatológicos, bioquímicos, hematológicos y la actividad cardiovascular en conejos despiertos normotensos con un tratamiento agudo y crónico y d) se evaluó el efecto a dosis crecientes de noradrenalina, el corazón ex vivo de ratón, previamente tratado con el AE de S. areira.
ABSTRACT: Introduction: Schinus areira L., commonly known as "Aguaribay", "Gualeguay" or "Molle", belongs to the Anacardiaceae family, where trees, shrubs and vines, fruits and nuts commercially valuable as cashews or pistachios are included. The research of active compounds present in plants for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases has increased significantly worldwide and because of these trends, many reports have evaluated the effects of various plants and their components in the cardiovascular system in order to provide a scientific basis for therapeutic applications target. The EO of Schinus areira and hydrocarbon fraction were obtained to determine their effects on cardiovascular activity and its action on histopathological, biochemical and hematological parameters in experimental animals. Materials and Methods: a) The essential oil (EO) of Schinus areira stripping water and subsequently through thin layer chromatography, the hydrocarbon fraction (HF) were isolated, b) were quantified by chromatography mass chemistry EO and HF, c) the effect of both oils on histopathological, biochemical, hematological and cardiovascular activity in conscious normotensive rabbits d) was determined the effects of increasing doses of noradrenaline were evaluated, the heart ex vivo mouse pretreated EO of S. areira.

There is an increasing demand for inexpensive and safe anesthetics that can reduce fish stress caused by some procedures such as capture and handling. In this context, the present study evaluated the potential of essential oils (EO) of three Brazilian native plants (Hesperozygis ringens, Lippia sidoides and Ocotea acutifolia) as anesthetics for the silver catfish - Rhamdia quelen. Moreover, an analysis was made of the chemical composition of these oils and their influence on stress parameter. EO of H. ringens and O. acutifolia were effective as anesthetics, without behavioral side effects. EO of O. acutifolia (150 µL L-1) promoted an increase in blood glucose level. Regarding to the composition, pulegone accounts for 96.63% of the EO of H. ringens, and caryophyllene oxide amounts to 56.90% of the EO of O. acutifolia. Two chemotypes, thymol and carvacrol (68.40% and 67.89%, respectively) were verified for EO of L. sidoides. Both samples of EO of L. sidoides showed anesthetic activity in silver catfish, but exposure also caused loss of mucus and mortality. Thus, only the EO of H. ringens and O. acutifolia are advised for anesthetic use.
Existe uma crescente demanda por anestésicos baratos e seguros capazes de reduzir o estresse em peixes produzido durante procedimentos como captura e manuseio. Neste contexto, o presente estudo avaliou o potencial como anestésico dos óleos essenciais (EO) de três espécies vegetais nativas (Hesperozygis ringens, Lippia sidoides e Ocotea acutifolia) em jundiás - Rhamdia quelen. Adicionalmente, a composição química desses óleos e suas influências sobre o estresse também foram avaliadas. Os EO de H. ringens e O. acutifolia foram efetivos como anestésicos sem efeitos adversos detectáveis. EO de O. acutifolia (150 µL L-1) promoveu um aumento na glicemia. Em relação a sua composição, pulegona correspondeu a 96,63% do EO de H. ringens, e óxido de cariofileno a 56,90% do EO de O. acutifolia. Dois quimiotipos, timol e carvacrol (68,40% e 67,89%, respectivamente) foram verificados para os EO de L. sidoides. Ambas as amostras de EO de L. sidoides apresentaram atividade anestésica em jundiás, contudo a exposição produziu perda de muco e mortalidade. Desta forma, somente os EO de H. ringens e O. acutifolia têm seu uso recomendável como anestésicos.

O presente trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de selecionar, dentre cinco modelos matemáticos, aquele que melhor descreve as curvas experimentais de secagem da parte aérea de P. brevipedunculata. Os testes foram realizados em protótipo de secador de leito fixo, em camada delgada, a 30, 40 e 50°C, com fluxo mássico de ar seco de 0,27 e 0,54 kg s-1 m-2. O grau de ajuste dos modelos foi avaliado por meio do coeficiente de determinação, da raiz do erro quadrático médio, do erro percentual absoluto médio, do chi-quadrado reduzido, pela análise de dispersão de resíduos, e considerando o princípio da parcimônia. O modelo exponencial simples de três parâmetros foi o que melhor representou as curvas experimentais de secagem podendo ser utilizado com segurança na simulação do processo em camada espessa. Embora o modelo de Lewis não tenha sido capaz de descrever as curvas de secagem com grau de acurácia satisfatório, observou-se que a relação funcional entre a constante de secagem k e a temperatura, pode ser representada pela equação de Arrhenius.
The aim of this study was to select, among five mathematical models, the one that best describes the experimental drying curves of the shoot of P. brevipedunculata. Tests were conducted in a thin-layer prototype laboratory drier, at 30, 40 and 50°C, employing a dry air mass flow rate of 0.274 and 0.542 kg s-1 m-2. The goodness of fit of the models was assessed based on correlation coefficient, root mean square error, mean absolute percentage error, reduced chi-squared, residual plot analysis, and taking into account the principle of parsimony. The model that best described the experimental drying curves was the simple-exponential, three-parameter model, which can be safely used to simulate the deep-bed process. Although the Lewis model was found not to produce accurate predictions of the drying curves, an Arrhenius-type equation represents the relationship between the drying constant k and the temperature.

The effects of thymol and carvacrol and the essential oil of Lippia gracilis on caulinary shoots of heliconia were evaluated. After disinfection, the shoots were inoculated into MS medium and subjected to the treatments with 420 µL L-1 of essential oil (EO) of L. gracilis; 420 µL L-1 of thymol; 420 µL L-1 of carvacrol; 210 µL L-1 of thymol and 210 µL L-1 of carvacrol. The control treatment consisted of the MS medium without any phytoregulators. The main components of EO from L. gracilis are carvacrol, ρ-cimene, and thymol. Seven days after the initiation of the experiments, 36.3% of the control treatment shoots were necrotized, but 90% of the caulinary shoots exposed to EO, thymol, or carvacrol appeared necrotized. Transmission electron microscopy of the shoots revealed that the treatment with EO, thymol, or carvacrol caused the destruction of the plasma cell membranes, and the cell organelles and the nucleus were hardly evident. The EO and its main constituent were toxic to caulinary shoots of heliconia.
O efeito do timol, carvacrol e óleo essencial de Lippia gracilis foi observado sobre ápices caulinares de heliconia. Após a desinfestação os ápices foram inoculados em meio MS com os tratamentos de 420 µL L-1 do óleo essencial (OE) de L. gracilis; 420 µL L-1 de timol; 420 µL L-1 de carvacrol; 210 µg L-1 de timol e 210 µL L-1 de carvacrol. O tratamento controle consistiu de meio MS sem fitorreguladores. Os principais componentes do OE foram carvacrol, ρ-cimeno e timol. Sete dias após o início do experimento 36,3% dos ápices submetidos ao tratamento controle e 90% dos ápices caulinares expostos ao EO, timol ou carvacrol necrosaram. A microscopia eletrônica de transmissão dos ápices caulinares revelou que os tratamentos com OE, timol e carvacrol provocaram desestruturação da membrana plasmática das células. As organelas e o núcleo não estavam evidentes. O OE e seus principais constituintes foram tóxico para os ápices caulinares de helicônias.

Este trabalho verificou o efeito dos óleos essenciais (OE) extraídos de Eremanthus erythropappus (candeia), Cymbopogon martinii (palmarosa) e de Rosmarinus officinalis (alecrim) no crescimento micelial de alguns fitopatógenos fúngicos e no tratamento de sementes de milho, soja e feijão. No teste in vitro, alíquotas de 20, 40, 60, 100, 200, 500 e 1000 μL de cada um dos óleos essenciais foram distribuídas na superfície do meio de cultura. Posteriormente, discos de meio de cultura com micélio de Alternaria carthami, Alternaria sp. e Rhizoctonia solani foram transferidos para o centro de cada placa. O crescimento foi mensurado e calculada a taxa de inibição do crescimento micelial (ICM). Para verificar o efeito dos OE na germinação das sementes utilizou-se a aplicação deles por fumigação. Foi avaliada a percentagem de sementes germinadas e a incidência de patógenos nas sementes. Sobre o crescimento micelial, o óleo de palmarosa inibiu completamente todos os patógenos fúngicos, independentemente da concentração. Já os óleos de candeia e alecrim foram melhores quando foram adicionadas alíquotas superiores a 200 μL. Os óleos influenciaram diferentemente a germinação e a sanidade das sementes de milho, soja e feijão.
This study aimed to verify the effect of essential oils (EO) extracted from Eremanthus erythropappus ("candeia") Cymbopogon martinii ("palmarosa") and Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) on the mycelial growth of some fungal phytopathogens, as well as on the treatment of corn, soybean and bean seeds. In the in vitro test, aliquots of 20, 40, 60, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 μL of each essential oil were distributed on the surface of the culture medium. Then, discs of culture medium with mycelium of Alternaria carthami, Alternaria sp and Rhizoctonia solani were transferred to the center of each plate. Growth was measured and the mycelial growth inhibition rate (MGI) was calculated. To verify the effect of EO on seed germination, application of oils was by means of fumigation. Percentage of germinated seeds and their incidence of pathogens were evaluated. For mycelial growth, "palmarosa" oil completely inhibited all fungal pathogens, regardless of the concentration. On the other hand, "candeia" and rosemary oils were better when aliquots higher than 200 μL were added. The oils differently influenced the germination and health of corn, soybean and bean seeds.

Atualmente o uso de métodos alternativos para o controle de doenças e pragas na agricultura, visando minimizar os danos ao meio ambiente e à saúde pública é uma prática reconhecida e necessária. Este trabalho objetivou investigar a ação do óleo essencial de Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & L.M.Perry sobre o crescimento micelial in vitro dos fungos fitopatogênicos Rhizoctonia solani, Fusarium solani, Fusarium oxysporum e Macrophomina phaseolina. A análise por cromatografia gasosa acoplada com espectrometria de massa possibilitou a identificação de eugenol (83,6 por cento), acetato de eugenila (11,6 por cento) e cariofileno (4,2 por cento). A avaliação microscópica dos micélios dos fungos evidenciou diversas alterações morfológicas, como a presença de vacúolos, desorganização dos conteúdos celulares, diminuição na nitidez da parede celular, intensa fragmentação e menor turgência das hifas. O óleo essencial de cravo apresentou atividade fungicida na concentração de 0,15 por cento sobre o crescimento de R. solani, F. oxysporum e F. solani, entretanto não demonstrou essa atividade sobre M. phaseolina. Esses resultados indicam perspectivas favoráveis para posterior uso do óleo de cravo no controle desses fitopatógenos na agricultura.
Currently, the use of alternative methods to control diseases and pests in agriculture has been a recognized and necessary practice to minimize damages to the environment and public health. This study aimed to investigate the action of clove [Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & L.M.Perry] essential oil on the in vitro mycelial growth of the phytopathogenic fungi Rhizoctonia solani, Fusarium solani, Fusarium oxysporum and Macrophomina phaseolina. Analysis by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry allowed the identification of eugenol (83.6 percent), eugenyl acetate (11.6 percent) and caryophyllene (4.2 percent). Microscopic evaluation of mycelia showed several morphological changes such as presence of vacuoles, cell content disorganization, decreased cell wall clearness, intense fragmentation and lower turgescence of hyphae. Clove essential oil showed fungicidal activity at 0.15 percent on the growth of R. solani, F. oxysporum and F. solani, but not for M. phaseolina. These results indicate favorable perspectives for future use of clove essential oil to control these phytopathogens in agriculture.

During the past few years, interest in the potential clinical and pharmacological basis of the efficacy and safety of herbal medicines has increased greatly, due to widespread domestic self-medication with these agents. Some authors have analyzed the use of Mentha ssp. in the pharmacological industry. The essential oil from Mentha spp. is used to treat discomfort of the gastrointestinal tract, irritable bowel syndrome, myalgia and neuralgia, as well as oral mucosal inflammation, and also as an expectorant, an antimicrobial and an ingredient in many analgesic creams. The essential oil also contains chemical compounds that are associated with side effects such as nausea, vomiting, allergic reactions, flushing and headaches. Therefore, the purpose of the present review was to examine the literature on the efficacy and safety of the possible clinical and pharmacological uses of the essential oil from Mentha spp. in human beings.
Nas últimas décadas, houve um aumento crescente no interesse sobre as bases clínicas e farmacológicas potenciais em relação à eficácia e a segurança das drogas produzidas de plantas medicinais, devido à automedicação destes agentes. Diversos autores avaliaram o óleo essencial de Mentha spp., devido a sua larga utilização na indústria farmacológica. O óleo essencial de Mentha spp. componente de muitos analgésicos e com atividade antimicrobiana, é usado para tratamentos nos desconfortos gastrintestinais e dutos biliares superiores, Síndrome de Bowel, expectorante, mialgia e neuralgia, bem como na inflamação oral da mucosa. No entanto, esse óleo contém compostos químicos que apresentam efeitos colaterais tais como náusea, vômito, reações alérgicas e dores de cabeça. O objetivo desta revisão atual foi avaliar dados da literatura específica sobre a possível utilização, eficácia e segurança clínica e farmacológica do óleo essencial de Mentha spp. em seres humanos.

Foram adicionados ao leite de cabra cru níveis crescentes de óleo essencial de erva doce que foram de 0 por cento, 1 por cento, 2 por cento e 3 por cento. Observou-se que a adição de óleo ao leite não teve efeito significativo (P<0,05) na microbiota para nenhum tratamento. Com relação às determinações de pH, observou-se um efeito linear decrescente à medida que o percentual de óleo aumentou no leite. Portanto, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito do óleo essencial de erva-doce sobre a microbiota no leite de cabra.

The genus Salvia, a member of the Lamiaceae family, includes over 900 species distributed through out the world. The hydro-distilled essential oil of wild growing S. aegyptiaca was analyzed by GCIMS. Twenty-one constituents were identified. The oil was characterized by high content of oxygenated compounds. The major constituents were virdiflorol [18.4%] CLs-nerone [18.1%] and carvenone [11.2%]. In the present study, the main behavioral effects along with the adverse effects of S. aegyptiaca essential oil [EO] in rats were investigated. The EO was used in three dose levels [125, 250, 750 mg/kg, I.P.] and examined in a series or check-list of tests with gradual increase in stress level for careful evaluation of a broad spectrum of behavioral effects. The used tests were swimming test [non-stressful], open-field test [mild stressful] and conditioned fear test [high stressful]. The study exhibits a marked dose-related behavioral changes regarding all stress levels or models. These changes are manifested as inhibition of attention and vigilance, muscular strength and neuromuscular co-ordination [in swimming test] as well as emotionality, locomoter and exploratory activity [in open-field test]. They also include enhancing of learning and memory as well as inhibition of avoidance and escape [in conditioned fear test], in addition to the high dose related hallucinogenic effects. It is concluded that EO of S. aegyptiaca has a wide dose-related behavioral effects ranged from anxiotytic, sedative, muscle relaxant, as well as cognitive and memory enhancing ability to hallucinogenic effects. It is also suggested to be efficacious in different anxiety-related conditions and can help in inhibiting the withdrawal syndrome in cases of addiction
