Résumé

The study was conducted to study the effect of hormonal treatment on Barrenness ewes reproductive performance. Fertility [number of ewes lambed per ewes joined], Twinning percentage [number of twinning lambing per ewes lambed],Lambing percentage [number of lambs porn per ewes joined], mortality [number of lambs died ber lambs born] and weaning percentage [lambs weaned per ewes joined] for 25 Barrenness ewes were treated with Veteglan [Cloprostenol] and HCG .Reproductive performance were affected significantly [P<0.05] by hormonal treatment Treated ewes were surpassed control group in there fertility [73.0% compared with 40,0%], twinning percentage [9.1% compared with 0.0%], lambing percentage [80.0% compared with 40%], mortality [25.0% compared with 50.0%] and weaning percentage [60.0% compared with 20.0%] It was concluded that hormonal treatment increased fertility and weaning percentage in barrenness ewes by 33.0% and 40.0% res

Résumé

We aimed to test the knowledge, attitude and practice [KAP] of physicians towards erectile dysfunction in the Eastern province of Saudi Arabia. At a scientific meeting about erectile dysfunction, 159 physicians from both government and private sectors answered a 34-item questionnaire in private. The mean total KAP score for the group was below the expected st and ard of 60%. Male physicians scored significantly higher than females. Urologists scored the highest, followed by and rologists. Surprisingly, physicians with higher qualifications scored lower than those with intermediate qualifications and even less than general practitioners. Those who had practised for >/= 10 years scored better than those with < 10 years practice. The role of cardiologists in the diagnosis and management of erectile dysfunction is discussed

Résumé

The analgesic activity of epicoprostanol, the major sterol of ambergris was investigated in male mice, using the hot plate method. Epicoprostanol [1, 10, 100 mg/kg i.p.] significantly increased the hot plate reaction times measured at 60 min post injector. P. chlorophenol alanine which depletes central 5 - HT, only inhibited the antinociceptive activities of 1 and 10 mg epicoprostanol, whereas DSP -4, a neurotoxin of central noradrenergic, the nor adrenergic and serotonergic systems may also be involved in this activity of epicoprostanol

Résumé

The major sterol of epicoprostanol was isolated from ambergris by flash column chromatography. Its identity as epicoprostanol was confirmed by 1H - NMR and 13C - NMR spectroscopy. Epicoprostanol was studied for its anti - inflammatory and antipyretic activities. Epicoprostanol produced a significant inhibition of carrageenan induced paw oedema. The study on antipyretic activity showed, that epicoprostanol produced a significant reduction of yeast - induced hyperthermia in rat

Résumé

The proportion of elderly Saudis is increasing so that whether prostatectomy of symptomatic benign prostate hyperplasia is suitable in this age group or not becomes a critical issue. A total of 179 patients who had symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia and required prostatectomy were reviewed retrospectively. Twenty-seven were aged 80 years or older [range 80-105; mean 86.2] and 152 were relatively younger. Of the 27 very elderly patients 25 [96.6%] were assessed as American Society of Anesthesiologists Classes 1 to 4 as were all the 152 under 80 years of age. Both groups were otherwise comparable in terms of presenting clinical problems, and 177 underwent prostatectomy. Postoperative complications involving the urinary tract as well as the outcome of prostatectomy were comparable in both age groups. There was no perioperative mortality. The age factor per se was not a clinically relevant risk factor for prostatectomy in patients over 80 years of age

Résumé

Ambrein, the major constituent of ambergris, reduced paw oedema in rats induced by carrageenin or serotonin [5-HT], when, it was injected intraperitoneally [i.p.] at a dose of 250 mg/kg. This effect of ambrein was compared with some known antiinflammatory drugs such as hydrocortisone, acetyl-salicylic acid [aspirin] and indomethacin [doses were 40, 350 and 100 mg/kg, i.p. respectively]. The results of this study proved, that ambrein possesses an antiinflammatory activity, which was less potent than that induced by the above antiinflammatory drugs in the carrageenin-induced oedema, but was more potent or, at least, equal in potency, in the 5-HT-induced oedema than those caused by the above antiinftammatory drugs. It is concluded that the antiinflammatory activity of ambrein may be due to inhibition of systemically released 5/HT and/or prostaglandins

Résumé

The cardiovascular properties of Ambrein were investigated on isolated rabbit heart and cats' blood pressure. Ambrein has increased the contractile force but reduced the heart rate and coronary flow in isolated heart preparation while Blood pressure lowered significantly in intact animal by this compound

Résumé

Pharmacological studies on various fractions and components of saponified and unsaponified matter of Ambergis powder, an internal secretion of the sperm blue Whale, have been carried out and are reported in this paper. Some fractions produced inhibitory while others produced stimulating effects to Cholinergic and adrenergic responses. These fractions were also observed to alter the effects of Cholinergic and adrenergic drugs when administrated by I.V. into the anaesthetized cat. The activity of the saponified portion appeared to be a non-specified effect on smooth muscle preparations
