RESUMO

This study was designed to evaluate the effect of systemic tetracycline administration as an adjunct to local therapy in localized juvenile periodontitis [LJP] patients. Sixteen patients [12 females and 4 males], aged 13-20 years, were included in this investigation. Clinical examination was carried out including gingival condition, pocket depth, attachment level and periapical radiographs for the affected sites. The treatment was performed in the form of scaling, root planning, soft tissue curettage under local anesthesia and periodontal surgery when indicated. Each patient received tetracycline 250 mg qds for 2 weeks concomitantly with the start of periodontal treatment. Revaluation of periodontal status was performed 3 and 6 months after treatment. The results revealed that most of patients exhibited resolution in gingival inflammation, gain of attachment, decreased probing depth and bone deposition or at least of bone resorption. In contrast 3 cases failed to respond to the combined therapy. However, the result of this investigation reinforced the use of combined systemic tetracycline administration and local therapy in LJP patients

RESUMO

Gingival inflammation and caries prevalence were compared among heavy and light calculus formers. Calcium concentrations in the saliva were significantly high [P <0.01] in the heavy calculus-formers group. Among the high calculus formers, the prevalence of gingival inflammation was significantly low, while caries prevalence was significantly high [P <0.001]. High calcium concentrations were encountered with high gingival inflammation and low caries prevalence, while low calcium concentrations were encountered with low gingival inflammation and high caries prevalence. The finding that gingival inflammation is associated with low caries prevalence in intensive- calculus formers and vice versa agrees with the hypothesis that the two processes are of an antagonistic nature

RESUMO

Experimental periodontitis was induced in 18 Sprague-Dawley rats divided intothree groups. They were infected by fresh isolates of actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans [Aa] strain [Y4]. A positive control group was neitherorally infected nor injected by Aa. Antibodies against Aa endotoxin weremeasured in all groups by ELISA immunoassay. Antibodies against Aa endotoxinwere detected in the increased as the time of exposure to Aa was increased. Antibody concentration in orally infected rats did not reach the antibodyconcentration detected in the injected group. There was a mild antibodyresponse against Aa endotoxins, which can be considered as a protectivemechanism aiming to neutralizing the deleterious effect of Aa endotoxins onthe host

RESUMO

The clinical results of this study showed a significant reduction of the gingival index and plaque index [P < 0.05] in the subgingival irrigation group than mouth wash group. No other clinically significant differences could be observed with respect to Pocket depth and attachment level between both groups. Chlorhexidine irrigation as a monotherapy following periodontal surgeryresulted in a more favorable gingival condition as compared with mouth wash

RESUMO

The effect of Anthraquinone Glycosides in combination with salicylic acid on periodontal condition was evaluated clinically and histologically. Patients were treated by the chemical agents once and three times per day. There was a clinical improvement in gingival condition while histological changes were noted in periodontal tissues. Further investigations are required for each component separately to determine which component had the delirious effect on gingival condition
