RESUMO

Subgingival plaque was collected from gingival crevice of 100 patients, 60 ofthem were seropositive for HIV antibody and 40 patients were seronegative. Gingivitis was manifested on 25 HIV positive patients and periodontitis wasmanifested on 35 HIV positive patients. In the other 40 seronegativepatients, gingivitis was demonstrated on 20 of them and periodontitis in other20. Bacteroides species from all samples were appeared as fine gram negativebacilli, strictly anaerobic, produce brown to black pigmented colonies andpitting on the growth media. The levels of growth of the organisms weresignificantly greater in gingivitis and periodontitis on HIV seropositivepatients more than gingivitis and periodontitis on healthy patients but nosignificant difference in the growth of the organism between HIV gingivitisand HIV periodontitis lesions in spite of the fact that two entity areclinically different. This indicates the important role of this organism onthe pathogenesis of these two entities

RESUMO

A sample of yeasts was collected from 100 seropositive patients for HIVinfection and oral candidiasis. Seventy six of them had clinicalpseudomembranous type, 20 had clinical erythematous type and four had angularcheilitis. Pure cultures on sabouroid agar were subcultured on nutrient agarplates and used to test for chlamydospores formation on corn meat agar, germtube formation in human plasma and sugar fermentation test. Chlamydosporedevelopment was demonstrated on 76 cases, germ tubes were positive on 72 casesand in 28 cases germ tubes were negative. In addition to the formal tests andsugar fermentation test, it was demonstrated that the dominating species wasCandida albican and account for 76% of all candida species. However, Candidakrusel represented 16%, Candida zeytanoides 4% and Candida tropicals 4%. Thereason for the predominance of Candida albican rather than the other speciesis apparently due to its greater pathogenesity which was manifested bypositive germ tube and chlamydospores development

RESUMO

Ten patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome [AIDS] and with oral Kaposi's sarcoma were studied. Only one of ten patients with AIDS had evidence of Kaposi's sarcoma on the skin. Several clinical forms of oral Kaposi's sarcoma can be distinguished as nodule, macule and ulcer. There were no characteristic histologic features for each type and no correlation between the oral types and histologic behavior of the lesions. Histologically, some nodular lesions manifest mixed cellularity, extensive dilatation of lymphatic spaces and proliferation of spindle cells. The other nodular lesions manifest only extensive dilatation of lymphatic spaces. The ulcerated lesions manifest prominent spindle cell proliferation at the early stage. Serial sections of the biopsy specimens should be examined in order to reach diagnosis

RESUMO

Forty patients with a clinical diagnosis of Burkitt's lymphoma of the jaws wereinvestigated between March 1987 to April 1990. Complete clinical, radiographic and histologic investigations were done for all cases. Histologic examinationof the 25 patients demonstrated and followed the criteria of WHO for the diagnosis of Burkitt's lymphoma, histologic examination of the other 15 patientsdemonstrated irregularity in the shape of the nuclei and variation in the sizeand shape of the cells in contrast to Burkitt's type. The final diagnosis forthose were non-Burkitt's lymphoma. Variation on clinical and radiographicfeatures between both conditions were obvious, however the age and sexincidence in both groups were nearly the same. This article emphasized thepresence of considerable clinical, radiographic and histologic variation amongsmall transformed [non-cleaved] cell- Burkitt's and non Burkitt's lymphoma

RESUMO

Four rare cases of primary malignant neoplasm of bone involving the jaws, osteogenic sarcoma, juxtacortical chondrosarcoma, solitary plasma cell myelomaand Ewing's sarcoma were presented. Complete clinical, radiographic andhistologic evaluations were done. Clinical and radiographic examinations ofthese tumors presented a difficulty in diagnosis. The classic radiographicpicture of these tumors were not manifested, but histologic examinations provedthe diagnosis. Radial surgical excisions were the treatment for osteogenicsarcoma, chondrosarcoma and Ewing's sarcoma. Radiotherapy was for solitaryplasma cell myeloma. Follow up for one year revealed good prognosis withoutrecurrence

RESUMO

An extremely rare case of acinic cell carcinoma occurs central in the mandible was found in 23 year old man. From clinical and radiological examination a provisional diagnosis of ameloblastome was made. By histological examination diagnosis of acinic cell carcinoma was confirmed. The tumor consisted of nests of acinic cells completely encapsulated. The acinic cell was well differentiated and uniform and contain small centric hyperchromatic nucleus. Mitiotic activity was minimal. No evidence was found to substantiate an intercalated duct cell or excretory reserve cell is origin of this tumour

RESUMO

The purpose of this article is bring to attention the diagnostic difficulties in some patients with connective tissue syndromes in who the monument my be problematic. A case of undifferentiated connective tissue disease in a patient with oral mucosal disorder is described, the case reported in this paper represent the 27 case of MCTD which to our knowledge constitute the second case of this syndrome associated with oral lesion. Thus deserving the name undifferentiated connective disease previously coined by Rich and Read, 1984

RESUMO

The present study entails an assessment of T-lymphocyte function in 30 contraceptive pills users, divided into 3 groups according to the administration periods. T-lymphocyte function in the tested groups was found to be suppressed as compared to the control groups. The long term administration of oral contraceptives -might suppress the cell-mediated immunity which could alter gingival tissue response towards bacterial antigens

RESUMO

Inhibition of gingival fibroblasts proliferation in vitro was investigated in patients with juvenile periodontitis. Twenty patients of both sexes, ranging in ago from 18-22 years and suffering from juvenile periodontitis; were selected to share in this study. A control group of similar number, age sex and with clinically healthy gingivae was also selected to participate in the study. For all patients, gingival biopsies were obtained and tissue cultures were accomplished for gingival fibroblasts. Subgingival dental plaque was collected from juvenile periodontitis patients; for the isolation and preparation of different strains of Aa sonicates. Different dilutions of Aa soni-cates were added to gingival fibroblasts cultures of both groups for cytotoxicity testing. Detachment of gingival fibroblasts were also tested; and proved not to be a precise method of assessing cytotoxicity. Aa-sonicates of different strains contained a heat stable cytotoxic components which inhibited proliferation of gingival fibroblasts in a dose-dependent fashion; as measured by cell viability. The inhibition was increasingly apparent in juvenile periodontitis group as compared to contral group. It could be concluded that, the high prevalence of Aa in the subgingival plaque of juvenile periodontogic agent in this entity of periodontal disease. Moreover, in juvenile periodontitis; inhibition of gingival fibroblasts proliferation with release of cytotoxic components was apparently detrimental in bing confined to Aa

RESUMO

Labial minor salivary glands were investigated in 17 patients of both sexes suffering from iron deficiency anaemia; and 17 age and sex matched healthy subjects. The most pronounced changes were demonstrated in iron deficiency anaemia; where there was a significant decrease in the size of the maturation compartment cells which was due to reduced cyto-plasmic volume. Increased nucleo-cytoplasmic ratio was also observed. Tubular metaplasia with progressive acinar atrophy was also noted and induced reduction of salivary function. The observable qualitative changes in minor salivary glands could be-postulated as a warning signal for premalignancy in patients with iron deficiency anaemia. The histologic data of minor salivary gland involvement could be used as an aid for diagnosis and prognosis in iron deficient patients
