Fish embryos Piaractus mesopotamicus were submetted to seven treatments to test. the toxicity of two cryoprotectants: glicerol and dimethilfoxidy (DMSO), and its associations with sucrose, at 28°C. There were no survival in treatments containing glicerol. DMSO was the cryoprotectant hat show little toxicity to the embryos.

RESUMO

The present work was designed to evaluate the effects of some antioxidants; vitamin E, vitamin C, deferoxamine and the ACE inhibitors [captopril and enalapril] on renal functions and peroxidative changes in glycerol-induced ARF in the rat. Drugs were given before and after induction of ARF by im injection of hypertonic glycerol solution. Serum and urinary urea, creatinine concentrations, urinary/serum urea and creatinine ratios, creatinine clearance, serum malondialdehyde as well as renal reduced glutathione concentrations were estimated. All the above mentioned drugs showed a significant renoprotective effect by improving the marked deterioration of the estimated kidney function tests in the uremic rats

RESUMO

1. Several mechanisms have been suggested for the renal damage induced by intramuscular injection of glycerol. 2. We investigated the role of beta recetor desensitization by propranolol, and blocking calcium channels by verapamil in providing protection to the renal tissue from glycerol-induced acute renal failure. 3. Propranolol but not verapamil provided a significant protection reflected by lowering blood urea and serum creatinine and attenuating histopathological changes. 4. We conclude that acute renal failure induced by glycerol may be partly mediated by stimulation of renal beta receptor
