RESUMEN

Study of renal insulin excretion was carried out in a group of diabetics before and after giving two drugs [probenecid and fursemide]. Probencid did not alter either the excretion or clearance of insulin in the stupid group. No significant changes in insulin excretion were noted in diabetics with normal renal function after fursemide. However, insulin clearance was increased after fursemide in this group, while this was not noted in diabetics with renal insufficiency

RESUMEN

Study of renal insulin extraction was carried out in group of diabetics with and without renal insufficiency. The study was performed before and after giving probenecid and fursemide. Both drugs produced no significant changes in arterial insulin levels and renal insulin extraction. However fursemide produced some increase in renal insulin clearance in patients and controls with normal renal function. It is thus clear that administration of probenecid does not affect insulin requirement n diabetic patients. However, the increased insulin clearance and increased renal insulin uptake in diabetics with renal sufficiency after fursemide may suggest that care should be taken in the administration of this drug in diabetics

RESUMEN

Serum lipids and lipoproteins were studied in a group of 15 patients undergoing chronic maintenance dialysis in Alexandria. The study revealed elevated triglyceride levels and hyper pre-beta-lipoproteinaemia. These lipid abnormalities may be involved in the increased atherogenic process in these patients. A multifactorial approach must be considered for explaining these lipid abnormalities in chronic dialysis patients

RESUMEN

Study of blood lactate and pyruvate using enzymatic method was made in a group of chronic renal failure patients undergoing regular hemodialysis. The study revealed essentially normal levels of these metabolites predialysis and post-dialysis. The underlying pathogenic mechanisms were discussed

RESUMEN

Six patients with end stage renal disease developed ascitis while on chronic maintenance dialysis. The ascitic fluid had always the characteristics of abdominal transudate. The various pathogenic mechanisms for ascitis in these patients were discussed

RESUMEN

Study of taste and smell was undertaken in a group of 15 male patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis. The study revealed marked attenuation of both of these sensations. Simultaneous determination of serum zinc levels revealed essentially normal levels, thus the disturbances occurring in these functions cannot be ascribed to simple zinc deficiency. The various mechanisms for disturbed taste and smell in these patients were discussed

RESUMEN

Study of renal insulin extraction was carried out in a group of diabetics with and without renal insufficiency. Renal insulin extraction ratio in diabetics with normal renal function was 0.319 which was not different from normal control group. However, insulin extraction ratio was diminished in the diabetic group with renal insufficiency [0.138] which may shed some light on the diminished insulin requirements in this condition
